Wow. I'd never heard of this man before, and although the book was written to younger children, and a lot of the story was made up, I still found it fascinating.
1992 Peru. Romalo Suane is a pastor to the pastors in the surrounding villages. The partly true, partly fiction story is based around a 13 year old boy, Alfredo Garcia. His journey goes from young boy enjoying a hard, but decent life in the little village of Santa Rosa, to living amongst the Communist party called Shining Path (against his will), to finding God and reuniting with his mother. There are some definite hard parts (murder, persecution, familial separation, etc.), but well worth the read to learn about the village missions of Peru in 1992, their test of faith, and how so many great men and women and children of God stood tall in His name despite the fatal consequences. Recommended for ages 8-12.
