The Harvest Games: -Trick, Treat, or Die-

Rate this book
One goal: Outlast the hunt and the man who leads it.

Every Halloween, the Circle of the Scythe gathers at Blackthorn Manor.
The price of survival? Blood. Bride. Or death.

In the remote village of Dunbrae, women are loosed into a living corn maze at dusk, hunted by masked men sworn to ancient vows. “Trick” means slaughter; “treat” means marriage to a monster. Either way, the cornfield always eats.
When Isla McKenna returns home, grief still raw and the past pressing close, she’s swept into a masquerade where folklore is no longer myth but covenant. Dressed in a blood-spattered bridal costume, she catches the eye of Dorian Blackwell—the Reaper-masked heir who runs the Games.
Isla’s only goal is survival. But in a place where the corn whispers, masks breathe, and the covenant demands sacrifice, survival may cost her more than her life.
Dark, atmospheric, and dangerously seductive, The Harvest Games is gothic horror romance at its sharpest—where every choice cuts, and every promise bleeds.

Tropes: hunter/hunted, cornfield-setting, masked, perfect halloween themed read!
TW: yes

Review:
This book is 150 pages long, but for me, twice as much would be fine as well.
Because I enjoyed this SO much! The entire vibe of this book is so intriguing and fast-paced.
I started the book and instantly fell into the story, it grabbed my attention and I searched for moments to read even more. I just find the entire idea so clever... a village where once a year - on halloween, near a large mansion - women get sent into the cornfield and get hunted by masked men and women. If they find you they'll scream 'trick or treat', which basically means 'die or marry' and it just felt perfect for this time of year!

It's dark, filled with obsession, fear and tension and I liked how Myla Carbo made this story come alive in those 150 pages. I also found the two MC's very likable and, like I said, a perfect short read for halloween.

I would recommend!

THANK YOU MYLA for the incredible ARC read to kick off the spooky season 🫶🏼 Carbo’s writing style and ways of setting the scene creates such a spooky, spine tingling, hair raising feeling as you read and that is exactly what I want when I’m reading something this time of year! I feel like novellas can be tricky- trying to make the story make sense & tie together in only 100(ish) pages and not let the reader leave with an incomplete feeling, but Carbo NAILED IT with this!
Y’all better add this to your tbr and devour it when it comes out if you want the perfect chilling read for spooky season

the writing in this book is so lyrically beautiful i couldn’t tear myself away from it.

the descriptions of everything were so vivid i could see everything playing out behind my eyelids like a movie reel. the scenery, the sounds, the feelings, i could feel everything as if i was in the main characters footsteps.

"𝔶𝔬𝔲 𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔫𝔨 𝔦'𝔪 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔬𝔫𝔩𝔶 𝔭𝔰𝔶𝔠𝔥𝔬𝔭𝔞𝔱𝔥 𝔥𝔢𝔯𝔢, 𝔟𝔲𝔱 𝔶𝔬𝔲'𝔯𝔢 𝔱𝔬 𝔡𝔦𝔰𝔠𝔬𝔳𝔢𝔯 𝔥𝔬𝔴 𝔪𝔲𝔠𝔥 𝔬𝔣 𝔬𝔫𝔢 𝔩𝔦𝔳𝔢𝔰 𝔦𝔫𝔰𝔦𝔡𝔢 𝔶𝔬𝔲."

every year on halloween, blackwell manor opens its doors for a party. rumor has it invitations get sent out and the recipients don’t return. is it really just a party, or is something more sinister going on up the hill?

isla comes back to town and finds an invitation for her on her doorstep, though her father insists she doesn’t accept, she can’t help but be intrigued.

from the moment dorian’s eyes met isla, it was set in stone that she was his. all he had to do was wait and see if she would play the game.

this book is perfect for the gothic spooky vibes this season!🦇🖤

thank you so much myla for this arc, i cannot wait to read more of your work, it’s absolutely beautiful!🖤

Wow. This is my first read from this author, and it won’t be my last. I love a spooky, gothic Halloweenesque games. And this was top tier. I dunno what’s wrong with me, but kinda jelly I’ll never be able to participate.

Her writing is a lyrical poetry. It’s beautiful, descriptive delicate. She says so much in just a sentence and I devoured every word.

I absolutely loved this novella. It grabbed my attention from the very start and held it the whole way through. I also loved that it didn’t feel rushed even though it is short. I often find that novellas will feel rushed or underdeveloped but I didn’t feel that way with this one! Also Dorian Blackwell???😍 Ugh I just loved everything about this book. It’s a must add to your spooky TBR!

This little novella spoke to my gothic heart. If I could rate this more than 5 stars, I would. The Harvest Games is a fast paced, very short, but spooky and eerie read with the most beautiful and lyrical/poetic writing I've read! I fell in love instantly, I finished this in less than a day and I didn't want it to end!

It felt like I was watching a movie while reading this story, the world and everything is described so vividly. This is set in Dunbrae in Blackwell manor on Halloween night where there is a bloody, deadly game that takes place in the cornfield as each year this maze/field needs to be 'fed'. If 'participants' choose treat they become the bride to the monsters (circle of the scythe) that are hunting them, trick; and they're unalived.

Isla, our fmc receives an invite to the manor and obviously accepts, needing a night out with her friends.
Dorian, the insanely hot mmc also the Reaper, has already claimed Isla as his before the games even begin. Eventhough this is a short story, their chemistry was perfect, and I adored both of them. Towards the end, there's some very hot spicy spice too, which I loved 'cause Dorian Blackwell, the man that he is. I was drooling. If you love "good girl" and "mine" moments like me, you will love him.

This has a secret society, masked men, hunter x hunted, so much action that kept me on the edge of my seat and horror/gore elements. I loved every second and I can't wait for more books from Myla!

If you are looking for a quick spooky season novella, then look no further than The Harvest Games.

If you are a fan of Gothic Horror Romance with Hunter x Hunted, Secret Society, Masked Men, Thriller and so much more this one is for you!

Every year the corn maze of Dunbrae must be fed - choose trick and be unalived, choose treat and become the bride to the monsters hunting you, don’t choose and the maze chooses for.

When Isla receives her invitation to the manor she is looking for an escape from grief and a fun night out with her friends but when Dorian, the reaper, sets his eyes on her she is his. In all his years of hunting, Dorian has never chosen a bride but the bratty Isla might be his undoing.

I loved the lyrical writing style of Myla and though it is a short story it felt longer with the history and journey leading up to the final night for Isla and Dorian. This story is not short on the horror/thriller aspect and will get your heart pumping right along with them as they run through the maze.

What a freaking good novella to start this spooky season!!!! Who doesn’t want to be haunted in a maze by Dorian Blackwell aka The Reaper heir hehe.

Everything that Myla writes is just so well thought off and interesting to read. It keeps you captured in the story.

“I watch life leave and I don’t look away because I do not insult the dead with indifference”

If you’re looking for a quick, slightly disturbing, wildly exciting, and weirdly romantic read to get you into the Halloween spirit this novella is for you!

This was quite a unique read with a some similar vibes that we would see in some Stephen King Novels, and one particular supernatural episode that I’ve been obsessed with since I first saw it… which would be “scarecrow” from season one! This novella, while carrying along a lot of my favorite aspects from both other forms of content, spins a very different sort of tale with very unique additional aspects. With a masquerade ball and a “hands off, yearning, she’s mine” kind of romance that ramps up through the story, some gruesome and incredible descriptive imagery, and a wildly detailed account of local folklore, this book really holds its own in the Halloween spooky genre!

I devoured this novella within a few hours because I could not put it down… I mean it was gooooood! I highly recommend this read to ease into the spooky season and I cannot wait to read more from this author.

The Harvest Games is such a dark and addictive gothic romance that completely pulled me in from the very first page. The story is set in foggy Dunbrae, Scotland, and it’s spooky, mysterious, and full of suspense. Isla McKenna steps into a deadly Halloween maze in a blood-soaked gown, and Dorian Blackwell, the Reaper heir, is watching her, choosing his prey. The tension between them is electric and dangerous, and every chapter kept me on edge. The way Myla Carbo describes the masks, the fog, and the hidden secrets in the town made me feel like I was really there, walking through the maze and feeling the danger around me. I loved how fast-paced the story is, but also detailed enough to feel the emotions and the dark romance. The chemistry, the suspense, and the eerie setting make this book impossible to put down. I was hooked till the very end and already want to read it again.
Thank you so much author for the free ARC!

“Trick, treat, or die. Love rots; we comply.”

Mr Dorian Blackwell....he knows what he wants and he makes sure he gets it 🫠
In this case, he wants Isla.

“I’ll ruin you sweet and make you say thank you,”

And Isla....she can't resist.

"He says my name like an oath he intends to keep even when it kills him. I say his like a sin I can’t stop committing."

This novella is perfect for spooky season, set on Halloween in a Gothic mansion.

The story is on the lighter side (for me at least) with some horror elements and more based on plot than spice but you do get a "treat" 😏

The way it was written fits perfectly with the folklore vibes but I must admit I had to look up many more words than usual, which took away from the reading experience a teeny tiny bit.

Overall, I really enjoyed myself and I would like to see more of Mr. Dorian Blackwell.

Isla McKenna just returned home to Dunbrae, and is still dealing with the grief of her mother. She finds herself invited to the annual masquerade. This masquerade is at Blacktorn Manor, home of Dorian Blackwell.

The masquerade is the yearly games where women are chased throughout a corn field. Either they do not return from the cornmaze, or they come out married. Masked men ask them either trick or treat, and based on their answers they choose their fate.

When Isla shows up to the masquerade, Dorian can feel her enter the room. He knows that he wants to end up with her, but is she willing to play the game?

This story is written beautifully. You feel as if you are there in the story, watching everything happen. Myla’s writing is descriptive and lyrical, I couldn’t put this book down.

This story is not my usual romance, but I am SO glad I said yes to this ARC! Thank you so much to Myla for letting me read this story early.

Buckle up it’s a wild ride!
From the prologue to the ending it’s got such a gothic haunted vibe that is just perfect for a spooky season read
This was everything advertised and then some, it really embraces the gothic haunted feel and I can’t say it enough but I absolutely love it!

Isla and Dorian make perfect sense in a way. It was such a quick read too, and I’m not sure how to review it without spoiling any of it. But if you want a gothic haunted novella this spooky season then this is perfect!

Big thanks to the author for reaching out and sending me this ARC!

To the Harvest. Trick, Treat, or Die.

A town full of whispers, rituals, and folklore. Brought back home after tragedy, Isla, comes back to her small town. She is reminded of the tales of Blackthorn Manor and the whispers of its rituals. Dorian Blackwell is the Scythe, Master, and Reaper of the manor and all who partake in The Harvest Games. A ceremony of blood, bonds, and a chase in the corn fields will determine the towns fate for the next year.

Thank you Myla for asking me to read this and experience your haunting words. This ARC was perfect for spooky reads season. Sleepy Hollow meets Phantom of the Opera.

This is the story of a secret society named “The Circle Of The Scythe”, where the wealthy host a hunting masquerade each Halloween.
Survival tip:
Run faster than Dorian Blackwell.

“The cornfield is why I am here. It breathes when the wind is dead. It whispers even when the ghost are quiet. It has taken me and given me back, and something of me never returned.”

My favorite time of year is here and what better way to start it out than reading a gothic Thriller! I was able to be an ARC reader for This Novella and I fell in love with this world, I hope we get more of it!

This short novella is packing with romance, horror, and Dorian Blackwell. This was a perfect quick for spooky season, and I loved everything about it.

This was not a rushed novella. I loved how Myla was able to create a great gothic story with detail and plot. Every Halloween Blackwell Manor opens its doors and invites people to attend
a party. Though some do not return...hmm....I wonder what lurks beyond the Manor 😈.

I loved the author's writing and story. This will be a reread before Halloween. I absolutely loved this novella 💜👻.

This novella is absolutely perfect for spooky season! It put me in a chokehold from the beginning. The writing style is absolutely beautiful. Very much old gothic, without being too old, if that makes sense. The writing is so descriptive that I literally felt like I was there in the cornfield. The characters were great. Dorian Blackwell, The Reaper, is so swoon-worthy. Ugh. I couldn't get enough of him. I highly recommend reading this book if you like gothic horror romance with a masked man, a cornfield thats hungry, and hunters that hunt prey every Halloween!

It started pretty calm. once they got in the manor shit went down. its not 5 stars because I dont quite understand what the trick, treat or die meant. why thwy decided to kill them or let them live. I dont know if I missed that, or if it didnt got explained. overall a nice, quick and easy read 🥰

I have to say, this book found me gripped from the very first page. Carbo’s writing is sharp, poetic and cinematic, painting a clear image of the story happening in front of your eyes.
The concept and plot is straightforward and intriguing, centering around Halloween night.
It’s short, feisty, bratty, gory, fun.

I definitely recommend if you’re a fan of dark atmosphere and tension. 🌾🌽
