Eighteen stories set in different eras and corners of the historical centre of one of the most unique capitals of the world. My hometown, Athens. A city some of us love to hate, but deep down? We wouldn’t change it for any other place in the world. The city with one million faces, with the ugliest and the most beautiful corners. With the most exasperating people and the kindest.
From the first years of the newly formed Greek nation after the Greek Revolution and the liberation from the Ottomans to the nightmarish winter of 1941 and the Great Famine during the Nazi Occupation, the Greek Civil War, the years of the Junta that started in 1967 and ended in 1974, the boom of the 80s and the 90s to the years of austerity until 2018, we listen to the voices of people who have nothing ‘special’ or grandiose or unique. They are people like you and me, fighting on a daily basis to make it through another day in whichever way they can. From the destitute, the marginalised, the forgotten, to the middle-class imprisoned in apartment blocks, this beautiful collection is full of haunting moments that showcase one unique characteristic of the Greeks and, especially, the Athenians.
We make fun of everything. Even of our misery. That’s why we have survived more occupations than any other European nation. That’s why we have survived the worst versions of ourselves…
