Sweet witchy slow burn ❤️🔥
This was my first Rielle Knight book, and I genuinely enjoyed it but this is absolutely one of those “you’re either going to love this or it’s not for you” reads. If you’re not into worldbuilding, magic systems, gargoyles, political scheming, power grabs, double‑crossing, kidnapping, spells, and general magical chaos, this probably won’t hit.
But if you are? Oh, this book gives you everything.
The story centers on Elias, a grumpy, super‑fine gargoyle enforcer who works in a vampire palace. His whole family has served the wealthy vampire elite for generations, and he takes his job seriously. He also hates witches — with reason and carries a lot of distrust and trauma around them.
Enter Essence, a witch and alchemist summoned by Princess Viviana to create a love potion. Things go left immediately: the potion breaks, spills on Elias and Essence, and suddenly they’re magically bonded. Viviana basically threatens Essence’s entire livelihood if she doesn’t fix it.
The problem?
The ingredients they need are rare, the bond keeps strengthening, and both of them have their own messy lives. Essence is in a situationship she’s not even sure she wants, Elias has deep‑rooted issues with witches, and yet… there was already something simmering between them before the accident.
This is a true slow burn .....like, extremely slow and the romance definitely plays in the background. Personally, I didn’t mind that at all. The focus is on the systems at work, the magic woven through the world, and the political tension threading everything together.

Oh Rielle, you've got me thinking long and hard about this one. One one hand I had a great time and enjoyed seeing the way you weaved this story all from a little love potion. I knew it was game over when Elias started heating up the room like a furnace when Verek came around. Watching them work to break a bond that couldn't be broken was entertaining, especially when they were destined long before meeting.
However there is one major issue that I cannot see behind is Elias's tendency to omit details. It bothered me for over 100 pages that not a single question was asked about why he withheld information about Honor and what happened between him and Somayah. Yes I as the reader know but Essence was clueless about it all and never once questioned him. How is that possible? Elias felt entitled to her thoughts, feelings and secrets but the moment she asked a question he told her that was his burden and not to worry. Excuse me!?!? The audacity of you talking about trust but giving absolutely none.
Yet, I still loved the way he loved on her. Arghhh how can I rate this?

I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend especially for those who want to get into fantasy. It’s definitely a great start into the genre

4.5⭐️ A mirror realm of the human world with witches, gargoyles, wolf shifters, and oppressive vampires? I had a good time! The attempt to right the wrongs of a spilled potion becomes a life changing experience of self discovery.
I loved that the further I got into the story, the more unique layers waited for me to explore. The mystery and suspense kept me engaged, and the hidden identity and character development were great! Watching the story unfold as truths were revealed and pieces fell into place made it more immersive. And the romance was the icing on top. 💖

A sexy GARGOYLE!!
This was such a fun read! The magic literally jumps of the page and the world building is on point. Elias is a grumpy and Essence is a quirky witch but uncovers two souls who are a perfect match.

Bloom
This was one of the most magical stories I’ve read in a while. The world building was flushed out so well. The characters were amazing. It’s slower burn on the romance for a fated mates situation but the build up was good. The pacing is solid and pretty fast moving for a fantasy story which puts its just beyond moderate. I almost wish this would have started with other characters before we got to Slate and Ess but I can see the potential for it moving forward as well.
The only issue is the volume of typos and errors. I’ve read the author before so I was very surprised at how badly this needs line editing. There are times where the sentences just didn’t make sense and it detracted from the moment or made trying to understand the plot more difficult.
There were also some character consistency issues that I didn’t enjoy because of personal preferences, and some that made parts of the story stall. Overall though this was so good, and very much worth a read.

I enjoyed this magical romance with Essense & Elias. I typically struggle with 400+ page books, but this one kept my attention. I love how everything came together in the end.
I will say, the book has a lot of grammatical errors, but that's my only gripe.
