Michel Zevaco (also written as Zévaco) was a French journalist, novelist, publisher, film director, and anti-clerical as well as anarchist activist.

Michel Zevaco founded the anarchist weekly magazine Gueux (French, Beggars) on March 27, 1892. A month later he was jailed for 6 months and fined for praising Pini and Ravachol. Afterwards he wrote for Sébastien Faure's journal, Libertaire, as well as for the anarchist newspaper La Renaissance. In 1898, he edited l'Anticlérical, for the Anticlerical League of France and was involved in supporting Alfred Dreyfus during the eponymous Dreyfus Affair.

Zevaco's famous cloak and dagger novels Les Pardaillan, began to be serialized in the daily newspapers in 1900 to great popular success. Yet he is today quite unknown, in spite of the new interest aroused by popular literature.

A former school teacher, then an officer, he became a militant journalist, who wrote for various revolutionary newspapers, of anarchist tendency. He became famous mainly for the part he played in the anti-clerical struggles at the end of the 19th century. Then, as a writer of serial novels, he published works which had a great success in Jean Jaurès' daily La Petite République, and he became appointed serial writer for Le Matin from 1906 to his death.

His already well-established popularity was made even greater by his promising beginnings as a film-director in 1917. His novels first published by Fayard and Tallandier were republished several times and adapted for the screen; the latest paperback edition only gives a mutilated version, and is impaired by many cuts.

He is remembered as the author of Les Pardaillan, Le Capitan, Borgia, Buridan, L'Héroïne, l'Hôtel Saint Pol and Nostradamus, his most famous historical novels, but also published novels related to his times. Some of his serials have not yet been published

A magnificent book by this not so well know French author who, together with Dumas, is a master of the "roman historique".

In the first of the 10 books of this series, Zevaco starts to describe the events which originated the Saint Bartholomew's Day massacre as described by Dumas in La Reine Margot.

Its sequel is L’Épopée d’Amour.

This review cover the entire Pardaillan cycle ( 10 books).
These books were part of childhood reading along with Lord of the Rings, The Musketeers and Jules Verne and with them I was discovering whole new worlds. Everything was playing in my imagination as they were fighting, loving and living for/their lives. Think I will read them again....

Brilliant book! I can't wait to finish the whole series and dive into other Zevaco books. Reliving childhood and loving every chapter. Suspense action, a great plot and wonderfully penned characters.
I would recommend Led Pardaillan and all of Zevaco's books.

Good book, I must say, even it is only the begining of the adventure. Besides politics, social class and other themes, the drama is very catching. The Pardaillans are not heroes yet, but through the story they transform into something relevant. As the tragedy of the two lovers begin, the old Pardaillan is just a opposite character, nothing to be impressed of. But later, he somehow redeem himself for the crime he has commited, kidnapping of a child. As for his son, the young Pardaillan, he remark through his epic battles with the sword. At first you I was thinking this would be a boring, without action or adventure, only political conflicts, but as you read it more you see a association between the movie "The tree musketeers" and this book, as I like adventure the most, I think this is a captivating story eliminating boring details such as, Kingdom ruler, monarchy and religious conflicts.

This is, unequivocally, the best book I've read in 2025 and my first five-star rating of the year!
In the same vein as the Three Musketeers saga, this is a swashbuckler series (my favourite genre). If you love Alexandre Dumas' writings you will really enjoy the "Les Pardaillan" series. The pacing is relentless, making it nearly impossible to put down. The intrigue was intriguing, the action was actioning, the romance was romancing, you get it. There were betrayals and duels, brothers conspiring against each other, nobles exchanging backhanded compliments, forbidden kisses in the dark, and ladies swooning at bad news, all sprinkled with a pinch of humour. In short it has everything my reader's heart desired.

I'm genuinely astonished that this incredible series wasn't recommended to me sooner by those who know my reading tastes in RL, I had to stumble upon it in a local bookshop. And I'm very glad I did. Adding the next doorstopper in the series to my TBR.
