He owns the bar that never sleeps. She walks in with a heart she can barely hold together.
After betrayal shatters her world, Anna is just trying to keep her head down and move on. But when a chaotic night throws her into the arms of Jax Blackthorn—the rough, unreadable biker who owns the infamous Night Shift bar—her life takes a turn she never expected.
Jax doesn’t do relationships. He doesn’t do comfort. But something about Anna hits deeper than he’s ready for.
As danger stirs beneath the surface of their sleepy Alabama town, secrets unfold, hearts collide, and desire burns hotter than either of them can control.
Night Shift is a steamy, gritty romance about healing in the aftermath of heartbreak—and finding love where you least expect it.
Night Shift by Cherise Kotzé is a dark, emotional, and deeply addictive debut that blends romance, healing, and intensity in such a gripping way. From the very first chapter, I was pulled into Annabelle Monroe’s story — her heartbreak, her trauma, and her unexpected path toward love and self-discovery.
🌙 Writing Style
The writing is incredibly immersive, with vivid sensory details that make each scene feel alive. The cabin, the bar, even quiet moments at home are described with such atmosphere that you feel like you’re right there beside Anna. Kotzé also writes emotion beautifully — Anna’s inner turmoil is raw and real, her fear and hope are palpable, and her gradual transformation is so rewarding to follow.
Characters & Relationships
Anna is a character you can’t help but root for. She begins fragile and questioning herself, but her journey of healing and rebuilding trust is inspiring. Her vulnerability feels authentic, and her bravery grows naturally throughout the story.
Jax is the perfect morally grey hero. Dangerous, mysterious, and intense on the outside — but beneath the tattoos and leather, he’s protective, caring, and surprisingly tender. Their chemistry is undeniable, but what I loved most was the balance between passion and safety. Some of the most powerful moments weren’t the heated ones, but the quiet reassurances:
“You’re safe. I’ve got you.”
That one line sums up the heart of this romance — finding safety in unexpected places.
Their banter and emotional confessions are equally memorable. Jax’s complexity shines in lines like:
“I want to be good. But you also make me want to ruin you.”
And the love between them reaches its most beautiful point during Jax’s proposal:
“You saved me too, Annabelle Monroe. You gave me something I didn’t think I could have. A future. A reason to be better. A reason to come home every damn night.”
🌟 Supporting Characters
The side characters really add to the story. Clair is the perfect best friend — blunt, honest, and grounding, while her romance with Ryan provides a lighter counterbalance to Anna and Jax’s intensity. Victor’s storyline was another highlight for me. His struggles and eventual growth added depth, and his departure felt like a meaningful step in his own healing.
🔥 Spice & Emotional Intimacy
Yes, there’s spice — and it’s hot. But what makes it stand out is how it’s written with trust and consent at the center. The BDSM elements are handled with care, showing not just passion but also intimacy, boundaries, and vulnerability. This makes the steamy scenes feel both powerful and emotional.
💭 Favorite Quotes
“You’re not the same girl I was in school. I’ve been through a lot. And you… you’re different too.”
“I want to be good. But you also make me want to ruin you.”
“You’re safe. I’ve got you.”
“I didn’t think I’d ever do this again, you know. Move in with someone and trust someone like this again.”
“You saved me too, Annabelle Monroe. You gave me something I didn’t think I could have. A future. A reason to be better. A reason to come home every damn night.”
“The worst had passed, and the healing had begun. And day after day, Anna was finding her way back to herself.”
✨ Final Thoughts
Night Shift is everything I want in a dark romance: atmosphere, emotional depth, complex characters, sizzling chemistry, and above all — healing. It shows that even in the darkest places, love can bring light, safety, and a reason to hope again.
Cherise Kotzé’s dedication says it best: “For those who find beauty in the broken, who are drawn to mystery, and believe love can be found in the most unexpected places. In ink, in shadows, and in healing scars. This is for you.”
If that resonates with you, then Night Shift is absolutely for you. A stunning debut — and I can’t wait to see what this author writes next!

From South African author Cherise Kotze, Night Shift is a captivating and beautifully restrained dive into a world where power is an art form, and surrender is the ultimate act of trust. It’s a book that doesn't drown you in its depths but offers a tantalizing taste, leaving you thirsting for more. The Seduction of Control This is a masterclass in slow, seductive world-building. The novel offers a surface immersion into the alluring undercurrent of BDSM, tempting the reader with whispers of control and surrender. Every touch and every quiet command is a promise of something deeper, creating a tension that is deliciously unbearable. Kotze uses restraint to her advantage, artfully exploring the intimacy born from trust and the potent power that lives in submission. It's not about the harshness; it's about the psychological dance, making the experience darkly alluring and exceptionally rewarding. A Storm in Leather and a Hopeless Romantic The chemistry between the main characters, Jax and Anna, is the core of this tempestuous story. Jax: The Dominant Who Protects Jax, the brooding and mysterious biker who owns a dimly lit bar, is more than just a man with a dark past—he is the past most people try to forget. He's the kind of man whose presence alone commands a room, a "storm in leather" who makes you feel both intensely safe and slightly afraid of the craving he ignites. His dominance is purely instinctual, protective, and deliberate. It's not born of ego or cruelty, but of the deep trust required to wield such power. Jax thrives on the psychological side of dominance: restraint, obedience, and surrender. His pleasure is derived from watching Anna let go, seeing her walls crumble under the weight of his quiet command. He doesn’t seek to break; he seeks to unveil—stripping her bare until all that's left is her truth. Anna: Finding "The One" Anna is the relatable heart of the story—a true hopeless romantic who falls in love with the passion of a full-time job. We follow her through a series of tragic romantic chapters: betrayal by a long-term boyfriend, a sweet crush who turns out to be gay, and a spark with a co-worker that never ignites. Her love life is a saga in itself. It is only when she is nearly run over and subsequently swept off her feet by the reckless, infuriating biker Jax that she finally finds her match. It’s a triumphant moment for the reader to watch our favorite event planner realize that this time, she was right: she finally found The One. High Stakes and Dark Realities Just when the heat of their connection threatens to consume them, the narrative tightens with a pulse-pounding layer of suspense. The love story is complicated by the dark reality of drug deals and the threat of a mysterious villain lurking in the shadows. This element adds a gritty edge to the romance, raising the stakes and making Jax’s protective instincts a genuine necessity. Night Shift is a seductive ride that blends intense, psychologically-charged romance with genuine suspense. For readers who crave an alluring taste of control and a hero who dominates out of instinct and trust.
Night Shift by Cherise Kotze immediately drew me in with its intriguing opening. The tension and intensity of the story made it hard to put down, and I found myself curious to see how the plot would unfold. What stands out is how layered the story is — it’s dark, complex, and emotionally charged, with moments that kept me hooked throughout. The characters and their interactions are compelling, and the story’s intensity adds depth beyond the surface of a typical romance. Overall, it was an engaging and fascinating read. The dark themes and emotional depth made the story memorable, and it’s easy to see why fans of emotionally-driven, intense romances would be captivated by it.
Night shift was such an easy read. I started reading night shift without getting any sort of back story or blurb. I was captivated from the beginning and had so many theories that on the different characters that ended up proofing all my theories wrong. The only reason for giving 4 stars instead of 5 is for the book being in 3rd person POV which I do not prefer.

Night Shift is a dark, emotional, and immersive debut that introduces a powerful new voice in romance. It follows Anna, a woman healing after betrayal, and Jax , the brooding biker who owns the Night Shift bar and hides a fiercely protective heart beneath his rough exterior.
Anna’s journey of rebuilding trust feels raw and authentic, while Jax’s morally grey dominance is rooted in care, restraint, and emotional safety rather than control alone. Their chemistry is intense, but it’s the tenderness and trust between them that truly define their connection.
The supporting characters add warmth and depth to the story. Anna’s best friend is blunt, loyal, and grounding, providing both emotional support and moments of much-needed humor. A secondary romance offers a lighter, more hopeful counterbalance to Anna and Jax’s intensity, while another character’s personal struggle and growth bring added emotional weight and reinforce the theme of healing and second chances.
With meaningful side characters, and a perfect balance of spice and emotional intimacy, Night Shift is a story about finding light in dark places and love where you least expect it. A gripping, beautifully written debut that will leave fans of dark, emotionally rich romance eager for more.

Night Shift from South African author Cherise Kotze. Well well I didn't think I would find this calibre of writing especially in this specific 0genre was alive and thriving in our country. Started off as a slow burn, differently paced to equal overseas writers. but when the heat hits, IT HITS!!!!!! you root for Jax and want to kick his caboose too but Anna steals the show, strong resilient. she is my favourite kind of a survivor, stab you quietly in the night kind of girl, because we know she can. and then their story evolved into a deeper intensity which I loved. I would recommend you spend a day in the company of these two. they are sharp, witty, caring and emotionally damaged. I liked it. text is large so it's much more user friendly. so what are you waiting for??? thank you Cherise Kotze you have outdone yourself here. looking forward to Ryan and Claire's story next 💜
Night Shift by Cherise Kotze had me hooked from start to finish. The mix of danger, desire, and emotion is incredible: Jax and Anna’s story is intense, passionate, and beautifully written. I loved how the characters felt real, each carrying their own scars and secrets.
It’s one of those books that stays with you long after you close it. It's full of chemistry, heartache, and redemption. A dark biker romance that hits you right in the feels!
From the very first page, you as the reader are invited to become a part of the story. Each scene is described with such vivid detail that it feels as if it's happening to you or playing out clearly in your mind.
Her world-building and meticulous attention to every detail are truly exceptional. By the end of the book, you'll have gained new insights into your own desires—either discovering new kinks you'd like to explore or reaffirming boundaries you'd prefer to avoid.
The book is filled with captivating action, steamy spice, heartfelt love, and genuine friendships, all of which inspire a deep desire to read more, experience more, and immerse yourself even further into the story. The side characters are so fully involved in the story that I truly can't wait for the second book to be released! I know it's going to be just as amazing as this one!!
This book hooked me faster than I expected. Night Shift balances atmosphere and story really well, creating a narrative that feels focused and absorbing from start to finish. The writing keeps the pages turning, and by the end I was genuinely hoping to see more from this story. Definitely a book that stays with you after you finish.
An unforgettable debut! It was emotional, gripping and beautifully written!
I recently had the absolute pleasure of being one of the first readers for Cherise Kotze’s debut novel, Night Shift... and wow, what a ride! From the very first page, I was pulled straight into her world. Cherise has a rare gift for crafting emotion-driven stories that breathe. Every character felt so tangible, layered and real that I often forgot I was reading, I felt like I was there with them: feeling their joy, pain, and everything in between.
The way Cherise explores the emotional and psychological depth of her characters is nothing short of breathtaking, definitely chef’s kiss. Her writing flows effortlessly, painting vivid scenes without ever losing touch with the heart of the story. You can tell how much love and care went into every chapter and every line.
And that ending? Perfection. It tied everything together in a way that felt both satisfying and emotionally powerful, the kind that leaves you sitting in silence for a few minutes after finishing, just to take it all in.
For a debut, Night Shift completely blew me away. If this is Cherise Kotze’s first book, I can’t wait to see what she does next. Her storytelling is soulful, romantic and deeply human... everything I love about reading.
