When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Twenty books and two Romantic Novel of the Year Award nominations later, and it still takes her forever to fall asleep.

Edward Parker & Isobel Cartwright have been friends for years. He has spent years restoring his family’s fortunes after the River Thames flooded his land. Now, Izzy a self-appointed matchmaker has decided to transform this ‘scruffy brute’ into an eligible gentleman. Though he has no interest in re-joining Society, Ned senses Izzy needs the distraction from her horrid home life and reluctantly goes along with her plans. An absolute delight from start to finish. I loved both Ned & Izzy both had their problems but they also had each others backs. Ned's the hardworking gruff farmer with the heart of gold, Izzy’s got a smile for everyone & always ready to help. I loved how their friendship gradually changes as they come to see each other as more than friends. The villagers are waiting for the scales to fall from their eyes. Strong characters, a well paced story with facts intermingled with the fiction My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This is cute. It was the perfect treat that I could get lost in or easily walk away from in equal measure in between some Thanksgiving craziness. It's a decent spin on Austen's Emma, and I appreciated that the characters were not of the ton but a farmer and a daughter of a shop owner living in a small village a few hours outside of London. The first 2/3 of the book is pretty repetitive and not much happens, although Heath does a good job of showing not telling some deeper plot points. The last 1/3 is worth trudging through the slow start.
His maddening Matchmaker was a very lovely and fun read. Ned and Izzy were hilariously oblivious to each other's attraction as well as their own feelings. A plot similar to many that seems almost modern regardless of the historical aspect of the story. Refreshing in its lightheartedness and very deep on the description of the emotions. Beautiful. I can't wait to read more books from Virginia Heath.

A fun story about frenemies. Long-time friends and adversaries whose relationship becomes complicated when she decides to play matchmaker for him. A little slow in places, but a satisfying story.
Smagu pasinerti į jau pažinto kaimelio ir pažintų veikėjų gyvenimus. Maloniai praleistas laikas skaitant apie draugystę, nepažintus jausmus, meilę, ilgesį, viltis, svajones ir atradimus.

Will these two hardheaded beings able to see past their blinders…
What lovely continuation for this series the author has just gifted us. Isobel is so easy to love, such a lively sweetheart with everyone happiness at heart, even if it is always with some mischief on the side to make do. To strangers she might appear flighty but she only seeks what she was deprived her whole life, not only of the certainty she was able to be loved, but also of love. Thus she tries again and again to find it among the men who pass by their little village in the hope to locate one who will see her as being enough. She is still the little girl she always was, looking for a loving home and loving arms, but by seeking her own happiness, she has made mistakes, mistakes well known from their little crowd. Marking her as unsuitable in some prig’s eyes. Ned is her fair opposite, after one last devastating loss, he retired from society’s life, only living and breathing his inheritance, to bring back his land to what it was once. Why he shutter out everyone, even his childhood friend Isobel. Lucky for him, she is not one to let people down, so again and again, for years, she has crossed his doorstep to bring him out. He might have let his pride stand him apart from his neighbors but Isobel’s light kept him grounded, she is the one person who never gave up on him despite his surliness.
So for years they have stood there exchanged barbs and quips, until Isobel decides to take fate in her own hands. From this moment, an awareness of the other which was not there in their younger years is awaken but their stubbornness at denying or muting it is like watching two bulls clashing horns. Who will surrender first.
A fun and moving tale of a wayward Miss and the pig-headed fellow who sees her wounds past her cheerful persona. 5 stars

I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
Finally the second book of The Very Village Scandal is here. The Whittleston-on-the-Water is incredibly interesting village and its residents are the best!
Isobel or Izzy is resolutely determined to become a matchmaker for Ned Parker after she partially succeeded in pairing off her friend, Sophie, with Rafe. However Ned, the gruff, surly, unapproachable and scruffy hero, is enraged by the idea, because he has secluded himself after the flood attack on his father farm and preferred to work. Despite her cheery characters, Isobel feels the void within her that she thinks no one knows. Her father is a bully whom always throws accusations and makes her life miserable. She is so inclined to set up a new life far from the village and buries her horrid past behind yet no man has taken interest in her therefore she is determined to preoccupy herself by making her childhood friend happy through reforming him.
Ah I immensely enjoyed the life in Whittleston-on-the-Water. Despite its location, the village is far from the fancy life and ball of London even though the gossip is still there. I loved how technically enlightening it is about the farming and the beauty of the sunset and sunrise near the River Thames. The scene when Isobel tries to avoid her father and runs to see sunrise, tilting her face and immersing herself in the yellow shining sun captivated me a lot.
Virginia Heath’s wonderful writing is always entertaining and full of wonderful characters. Ned, the gruff and scruffy farmer who works hard in the farmer but has soft heart for animals and Isobel, an optimist who has shining and pleasant, albeit irritating character, both Ned and Isobel are stubborn but I loved them. At times I just wanted to put some sense to make them realize that they deserve one another and thanks to the kind neighbours for their considerate action. The story is so splendidly immersive and entertaining. The ending is so twisted and dramatic but I even loved it more. Thank you, Virginia Heath, for the ARC which I voluntary reviewed.
Isobel Cartwright and Ned Parker have known each other most of their lives. Even when Ned neglected their friendship after difficult times at his farm weighed down on him heavily, Izzy was always there to make sure he had fresh bread from the bakery, and tea that was much better than he made for himself.
But now, Izzy is on a mission to make sure her lifelong friend won't end up a lonely old man, and she sets out to match-make for him in the form of Rose Healy, a young woman who is visiting her aunt in Whittleston for the summer. Ned wants nothing to do with Izzy's matchmaking schemes and tells her so. However, he soon realizes that her matchmaking is important to her so he goes along with it, even though he has no interest in the lady, or the process.
Through Izzy attempting to draw Ned out to be more sociable, the only sparks that start to fly are those between Izzy and Ned. The townspeople then get into the fray and start doing some matchmaking of their own.
This was a delightful story, with many humorous scenes. The back story about Izzy's past is heartbreaking, and the reader can't help but root for her to have a happy ending. These were two very likeable characters.
I listened to this book while sick, and it was just what the doctor ordered! It's a very pleasant historical romance, set in a cozy, sleepy village with a charming cast of characters. After reading plenty of historical romances filled with dukes, it was a breath of fresh air to have a farmer, Ned, as our hero.
Izzy, our heroine, tries desperately to get her best friend, village curmudgeon Ned, set up with his happily ever after. I loved their friendship...the banter, the easy camaraderie. It was so fun! There were a few moments of tension, but this book is primarily set up as a friends to lovers that's built on a sturdy solid friendship. Not having read Virginia Heath before, I had pretty much assumed that she wrote sweet/clean romance until we got a love scene in the eleventh hour. It was a great reflection of their relationship with solid writing!
My friend read the first book in this series, and said it was fantastic. I'm going to have to read it, as I found this quaint village to be a lovely escape! And Virginia Heath is as fun an author as I was told. Great to have another HR writer I'm excited to revisit!
Izzy and Ned ( Isabelle and Edward) have known each other since childhood, Ned looks at Izzy and thinks 'Menace' and Izzy looks at Ned and thinks 'Oaf' but what is clear from the start is how much love there is for each other. It is set in a small village, and has a hint of Austen's Emma with our matchmaking heroine trying to pair everyone around her, however Izzy is far more flawed than the Austen character. Flighty, a little too giving and with an eye for a gentleman in uniform, Izzy has to contend with a truly awful father who is looking for the opportunity to offload his daughter be it through marriage or simply casting her off! Loved this slow burn romance, Ned's stoic patience and Izzy's bumbling efforts to rehabilitate the man she loves for another woman is a lovely 5 star read
The town appointed matchmaker decides to take it upon herself to find a wife for her childhood friend in His Maddening Matchmaker.
Isobel and Edward have been friends since their youth, and neither have been lucky in love. But in actuality she seems to be the only one looking to be whisked out of the small seaside town married. Edward, on the other hand, has been working night and day on the family farm. He's finally turned it around after a devastating flood that destroyed his livlihood for many years.
Isobel not so subtly encourages Edward to re-enter society. He only agrees so he can help her escape her terrible home life. The problem is that they don't see what right in front of them - LOVE!
This book finds friends opening their heart to each other, finally acting on what the whole town has seen for years. Their friendship is endearing as each adores the other since the days they'd sit seaside and hang out.
Thank you Virginia Heath for the advance reader copy.
His Maddening Matchmaker Rating: 4 stars Thank you to the author/publisher for the ARC given for review. All opinions are my own.
His Maddening Matchmaker was a very enjoyable read!! I'm giving it 4 stars because the first half of the book was a little slow and nothing much happened. The last half of it really made me get more invested in these two characters who have been best friends since they were children. I loved the friendship they shared and the banter they had. They're complete opposites so they were always butting heads. Izzy matchmaking attempts drove Ned up the wall and at some point became annoying. I'm glad he finally put some kind of limit to her antics. LOL
Overall it was a very sweet story of two friends realizing they had feelings for each other. The entire village knew they loved each other except for them.
Izzy is the matchmaker of the title, but she is not the only matchmaker in this story. There are all sorts of plots afoot to get Ned married, but Izzy is only aware of her scheme. She has been worried about Ned for quite a while. After his father's death and a flood that nearly ruined the farm, Ned has been grumpy and distant with everyone. If he gets married, maybe he will return to the Ned who was her best friend. She throws herself into this plan but then realizes that she doesn't want any other woman to have her Ned. Nearly the whole village will get involved and add even more craziness to the situation. I had a great time reading this, and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
Yet another brilliant book by Virginia Heath! I loved the previous book of the series and I was happy to once again walk the streets of Whittleston-on-the-Water and see what its gossipy, but caring inhabitants were up to. I looked forward to seeing Ned and Izzy find their HEA and I wasn’t disappointed! Their interactions are hilarious and poignant at the same time and I enjoyed them very much. And the side characters are equally gorgeous and well fleshed out. I would have trimmed the book a little bit here and there, but that’s probably only my eagerness to see them finally understand that they loved each other! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A solid middle of the road read, quite sweet in places and I enjoyed the main couple on the most part, but it did get a bit *silly* from time to time with a whole heap of people denying to like the person they like while pretending to like other persons to make the person they say they don't like jealous while scheming with other person to pretend to like other people...fuck - and this schtick is going on with about 3 couples simultaneously - it's rather exhausting, a bit like when A Comedy of Errors is at full farce and a bit of your brain is silently screaming because it's perhaps a bit too much.
This story starts off slow, but about mid-way through it heats up into a story I couldn’t put down. Ned captured my attention from the start, not so Izzy. Izzy’s redemption comes when she finally realizes what has been holding her back. Best Friends since childhood it took years before the two of them realized their mutual love, even though their friends and relatives had seen their destiny for ages. All in all a delightful Virginia Heath story.
Wonderful friends to lovers/opposites attract story of Mr Ned Parker and Miss Isobel. Izzy has decided that Ned needs to marry to get him out of his slump, and with that the fun begins. Loved these two together, the characters in the village and the various animals that seem to get in the way, but help as well. Laugh out loud part of the A Very Village Scandal series, but can be read as a standalone. Highly recommend.
I definitely enjoyed reading this romance and how the longtime best friends eventually became lovers despite her initial efforts to match him with someone else. I especially loved the colorful banter between them!
(Note: If you are the type of reader who notices typos and other errors, you may stumble occasionally in the middle of the book. The editing and/or proofreading were just not up to par with the first book in the series.)
I absolutely ADORED His Maddening Matchmaker! It warmed my heart, set my pulse racing, and made me laugh. I loved Izzy and Ned - so obviously meant for the other! Both characters were so well-rounded, perfect yet flawed. The supporting characters were delightful too. The author has delivered a very strong, enjoyable book two in her A Very Village Scandal series. Virginia Heath is such a talented writer; I love her writing style and will read anything she writes!
I thought the pacing was too slow and found myself bored. It also took forever for the main couple to get together. Maybe I would have liked it more if the romance had moved at a quicker pace. The writing and characters were fine. There just wasn’t enough action.
It was my first book by this author. I wouldn’t rule out reading her again despite my disappointment. This one wasn’t for me, but it seems like she’s prolific, so it’s possible that she’s written other stuff I might like better.
I liked Izzy and Ned although they are polar opposites. There was a little of Rafe and Sophie, and of course Archie who is still my favorite from the first book in the series. And perhaps a hint who is next in the Scandal series. Everyone knew Izzy and Rafe should be together except them. It took them long enough. In the meantime the farm animals were entertaining.
3/3.5 stars. The first half of this was a bit slow and had odd typos/mistakes with lots of exposition that reoeated itself. The, the second half swept me way. I laughed out loud. I cringed and squirmed with emotion and embarrassment. I smiled at the ending. So, it was 2.5 to 4 stars, settling somewhere in between.
I loved the whimsy of this book. Ned needs a wife but has no interest in finding one. Izzy is a fascinating woman who knows him too well. Perhaps they both need to look closer to home to find lasting happiness. An enjoyable read.
This is the first romance I've read with a farmer as the MMC. He and the FMC were antagonists as well as childhood friends. It was a bit slow to start, but things picked up in the second half.
i really enjoyed this book. the hero and heroine are wonderfully together though it dose take them along time to work out how they feel about each other. i do like the elderly woman in the book she is just as funny and wonderfully as she was in the first one. i look forward to the last one.
Loved the humor in this one! Quirky farm animals are always a plus, as is a soft animal-loving hero. A perfect friends to lovers matchmaking scheme, and I'll be reading more of Virginia Heath's work-especially the rest of this "A Very Village Scandal" series!
It took me forever to read this absolutely horrid book. It was well written sure, but Jesus Christ, the miscommunication, the absolutely daft characters, I wanted to throw this book across the hallway At multiple points.
Finally, finally, finally! I’ve finally read a sunshine-y, optimistic FMC who isn’t too stupid to live or an overgrown child. Isobel is smart, has a backbone, and a clear point of view. Her warm and loving nature is written as proof of her resilience, not obliviousness. I love her.
