Longevity Made Simple: Live Healthier for Longer with the DRESS Code

Rate this book
What if aging didn’t mean decline—and chronic disease wasn’t inevitable?

Longevity Made Live Healthier for Longer with the DRESS Code is a transformative guide that challenges everything we think we know about health, aging, and the future of medicine.

A Stanford-trained physician and leading expert in lifestyle and integrative medicine, Dr. Shad reveals the we don’t have a healthcare system—we have a sick care system, one that reacts to disease rather than prevents it. Meanwhile, chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and many cancers continue to cut lives short—despite being largely preventable.

Longevity Made Simple empowers you to take your health into your own hands using the DRESS Code—Diet, Relationships, Exercise, Stress, and Sleep—a practical, science-based blueprint to prevent, treat, and even reverse the chronic diseases that account for most premature, preventable deaths worldwide.

Backed by the latest research in epigenetics, Dr. Shad explains in clear, accessible language how your genes are not your fate. Instead, your lifestyle choices can change the expression of your genes, tackling the root causes of disease and promoting optimal health and vitality as you age.

You’ll
- What the latest science reveals about the food and habits that help you thrive
- Why connection and community may be more vital than any supplement
- How to optimize your sleep, tame stress, and move with joy
- Actionable strategies and routines that fit into real life—no matter your age or background

Longevity Made Simple: Live Healthier for Longer with the DRESS Code
by Shad Marvasti, MD

Thank you to ShelfLife for the gifted copy 💛

I always go into longevity books with cautious optimism. The promise of “live longer, live better” is powerful, but it has to be grounded in something real and practical to hold my attention.

This one is built around the DRESS Code: Diet, Relationships, Exercise, Stress, and Sleep. It is clear, structured, and easy to follow. If you are newer to lifestyle medicine, this framework could be genuinely helpful. The writing is accessible and science-informed without being overwhelming, and I appreciated the focus on healthspan rather than just lifespan.

That said, it felt a bit repetitive to me. The DRESS acronym is introduced, reinforced, repeated, and then repeated again. The concept is solid, but the constant callback made the book feel longer than it needed to be. I also found myself wanting a little more depth in some sections. It works well as an introduction, but not necessarily as a deep dive.

What I Loved
• The emphasis on prevention instead of reactive “sick care”
• Clear explanations of how lifestyle influences gene expression
• The healthspan focus, quality of life matters more than just years
• Practical suggestions that feel realistic for everyday people

What Didn’t Work for Me
• The DRESS acronym is repeated so often it starts to lose impact
• Feels more introductory than transformative
• A bit dry in places, especially early on

⭐ Star Rating: 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐

Overall, this is a solid, approachable primer on lifestyle-based longevity. If you are looking for a simple framework to organize healthy habits, it delivers. If you already read a lot in this space, it may feel familiar rather than groundbreaking.

Thanks to Netgalley and Post Hill Press for providing an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Shad Marvasti’s Longevity Made Simple serves as an enjoyable and informative primer for those looking to grasp the basics of a healthier lifestyle, but it ultimately feels lightweight when compared to the gold standard of the genre, Peter Attia’s Outlive: The Science & Art of Longevity. While Marvasti offers solid medical advice, his work lacks the profound, personal expression and rigorous technical depth that made Attia’s deep dive so transformative. My primary frustration with this book, however, was the relentless repetition of the author’s favorite acronym: DRESS (Diet, Rest, Exercise, Stress management, and Social support). The concept is sound, but the constant reiteration throughout the chapters becomes incredibly grating; honestly, the book could have been half its current length if the author had simply skipped the endless repetitions of this single mnemonic.

Longevity Made Simple offers us an easy acronym to remember what actions and life style changes we can make, to add years and happiness to our lives. Each area of the acronym DRESS is explained, giving understanding how diet, relationships, exercise, stress and sleep effect our health and over-all well-being. From there specifics of how to make each of these areas in our lives healthier. A delicious bonus is included at the end of the book, with tasty healthy recipes to get one going on the diet part of life style. This is an easy read and very informative. Even if this may be review for you, there will likely be tid-bits of new information or new ways to approach a healthier, happy lifestyle. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for offering the opportunity to read this book. It is a reference I'd be happy to have on my bookshelf.

A little dry at the beginning but it picks up in Section II where it defines “DRESS” code with specifics. The D is for diet and so there is a focus on diet with great explanations of why or why not to eat certain foods. The R is for relationships and their importance to our physical and mental health. E is for exercise which is pretty straight forward. The S’s stand for stress and sleep. I did find the information on physical stress interesting as I always think of stress as being mental stress. And I find the mental stress to be the least easy to fix although there were lots of great suggestions. Part III is relating the code to your life through examples of how people used the code to better their health. It also lists longevity hacks and has a 30 day challenge.
The term healthspan as opposed to lifespan is spot on!
