Passed down from generation to generation, many of Derbyshire's most popular folk tales are gathered together here for the first time. Ranging from stories specific to the region, such as 'The Derby Ram', to others which are local versions of well-known classics, like 'Beauty and the Beast', all of the tales in this collection are rooted in Derbyshire's past. Written to recreate the oral traditions that made these anecdotes popular, this book provides entertainment for all. Richly illustrated with original drawings, accounts of love, loss, heroes and villains are all brought to life through vivid descriptions that have survived for several centuries. These tales have been adapted to make them accessible, enjoyable and, at times, very relevant to contemporary readers. Loved this book and the illustrations too. My aim is to collect all books in this series! Being from Derbyshire myself I was fascinated to know about these quirky stories of my home town. They are told in a simple and gentle manner which was very enjoyable as this was my first introduction to this genre when I read this book a few years back and now I am getting very hooked on folk tales. A lovely read all a round and perfect for all ages.
Informative and fun book on various folklore from Derbyshire county. The language was simple and accessible which made for a quick and easy read. I dropped one star because it primarily covers the north of Derbyshire and there was nothing much of South Derbyshire, if I recall correctly, which was disappointing. The illustrations weren't to my taste either, I felt they were out of place and distracting from the tales due to their comic style.
Each story is a gem. Probably best to dip in and savour rather than try to read it through. If you know Derbyshire you’ll love it. If you don’t know Derbyshire I imagine it’ll encourage you to plan a visit or three
