In the dark of the night, there is passion and destruction…
Criminal defense attorney Ember Thorne thought the biggest challenge of her life would be her quest to navigate the justice system on behalf of the wrongly accused. That is, until she finds herself in the sights of an otherworldly evil, desperately hunting what she cannot kill, not yet, at least. Nothing in her life, or in this world, is what it seems, and when a blue-eyed stranger named Micah saves her life, their attraction is the fire that could become the death of all that exists or the salvation that blooms with new hope for all. Micah, royalty in his own right, will challenge her to stand against evil, but when you have never known true evil, can you really recognize it where it hides?
In a world where angels and demons are the truth humans call fiction, could it be a lie between lovers that equals salvation? Or is that lie the blade that delivers devastation?
Ember and Ash, the first book in the Thorne Saga, introduces you to a world filled with the magic of angels and the darkness of the monsters they hunt, where secrets and lies, and a passionate forbidden romance hold world-altering consequences.

Thank you to the publisher Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for providing the his book for review purposes via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This book was epic the action starts from the very beginning, I really enjoying the pacing of this book and the world building. What I enjoyed most is that there wasn’t a slow build up as we are discovering about this world and Ember’s powers as she does, this book wasn’t slow paced but wasn’t so fast paced that I didn’t feel like I couldn’t get a breath. I’m glad I read all of the excerpts from The Sacred Book of The Nephilium that were at the beginning of each chapter as this contained vital Easter eggs that were important to the story, I really want to know what happened to Embers real parents. I really liked Ember as she was strong and I enjoyed her character development, I did guess about her hidden identify. I felt for her though as she really did have the rug pulled out from underneath her. I liked Micah but I didn’t agree with all of his methods about training her but I did like these two together and I’m keen to know more about their connection. I’ve read quite a few books with Nepthilium and Angels in and it’s a trope that I really enjoy. I felt the hierarchy of the Nephilium was explained really well and the glossary at the start of the book was really helpful, overall I really enjoyed this book and I’m excited to see where this series goes. The only question I have left on my lips who is the Nephilium with the red wings? And what’s his connection to Ember?
It's a really good mix of crime thriller and supernatural world ending story telling. There's so much going on you turn page after page to get answers. The angel / demon aspects are added in an intriguing unique way. Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the arc
Unfortunately, this was a DNF for me at 46%. I really wanted to like this book, and I tried to push through for over two weeks, but it just isn’t for me.
What initially drew me in was the interesting premise. I loved the idea of a defence attorney as the FMC in a fantasy story about angels and demons, and the description gave me strong Supernatural (TV show) vibes. A book combining a crime thriller with fantasy romance massively appealed to me, but the execution fell short.
The first part of the book, where Ember is a strong, independent attorney advocating for those she believes are innocent, was great. I was engaged with the plot and invested in Ember as the FMC.
However, I began to lose interest when Micah, the MMC, was introduced. There were many attempts at banter between the two characters, but unfortunately none of it landed for me. Micah was very hot and cold toward Ember, making their attraction hard to believe. There was no chemistry, no tension, no yearning.
As the story progressed, I not only disliked Micah but also grew to dislike Ember. She was no longer the strong, independent character from the beginning, instead she became quite whiny. As a defence attorney, someone whose profession relies on communication, the heavy use of the miscommunication trope felt out of character and poorly executed. Much of it could have been resolved if Micah answered Ember’s questions with anything other than “magic.” I really struggled to connect with either main character.
The only character I genuinely liked was Ember’s best friend Oliver, who completely disappeared from the story. His banter with Ember was funny and their relationship felt real and natural up until the point she seems to complete forget he exists. I’m unsure if he reappears later, but his absence was noticeable.
I also struggled to connect with the magic system. When Ember begins discovering her powers, Micah tells her to “just do it,” and she does with no real explanation beyond “magic.” It felt underdeveloped.
The writing itself feels quite juvenile at times. Phrases like “I would have obliterated him and his minions” and “you and all your pathetically weak cronies” gave cartoon like vibes, which isn’t the language I expect in an adult fantasy romance. It made it hard to take the story seriously. Other phrases, such as “Magic is always the answer” and “I’m not telling you that,” became repetitive and frustrating. I wanted more explanation and detail to fully immerse myself in this world.
The book is also very dialogue heavy, and much of the dialogue states the obvious, as if reminding the reader of things they already know. It often felt unnatural and pulled me out of the story.
On a positive note, I did enjoy the Sacred Book of Nephilim inserts between chapters. These were really interesting and added much needed world-building and lore.
Overall, this book has an intriguing premise, but the execution needs work. Unfortunately, the issues were significant enough for me that I couldn’t finish it.

ARC Review: If you love: Angels vs. Demons/Slow burn/forbidden romance/Found Family then this book is for you!
This is my first introduction to Lisa Renee Jones and it did not disappoint! I was immediately drawn into this story about a criminal defense attorney Ember Thorne having to learn who she is, humans aren't the only ones to exist and ultimately, what side she's on. Angels vs. Demons/Good vs. Evil/Light vs. Dark. The book is engaging throughout its progression, and I didn't want to stop reading. However, the middle of the story was the MFC and MMC characters having the same conversation but overall, the banter between the two of them is great. All this to say, this ends with a cliffhanger, and I can’t wait for book 2!
Ember & Ash starts out with the feel of a legal thriller, but quickly morphs into something much bigger and more magical. Ember is a defense attorney, determined to represent the truly innocent. At the book's start she appears to be doing exactly that: defending an innocent professor in a serial murder case. But when the verdict comes in, it's as if the veil has been lifted and she's seeing the world through new eyes.
True evil exists, and so do demons and nephilim. Her own past is thrown into doubt as she learns about the magic around her, hidden in plain sight her whole life. Ember is quickly drawn into a fight for survival, not just her own, but humanity's as well. The premise is captivating and highly entertaining. So, too, was the burning spark of desire building between Ember and her rescuer / mentor, Micah. He holds the key to the knowledge Ember needs as well the ability to help her unlock her powers & become the warrior she was born to be. Their chemisty was electric; drawn to each other at every opportunity, yet forced to keep each other at a distance. Their passion must to take a backseat to duty. The slow burn was delicious.
Unfortunately, a few aspects of the story felt underdeveloped to me. Magic seems to have little-to-no rules or limitations. Micah is supposed to be teaching Ember how to use her powers, yet his tutelage consists of barked orders to "believe" and trust herself. No one ever really explains the rules to Ember (or us as readers) and we're forced to just blindly accept our ignorance. The dialogue, and Ember's inner thoughts (the whole book is in her POV), felt stilted and didn't flow well in quite a few spots. In the end, these things can be overlooked, and I'm intrigued and invested enough in the story to want to read the next installment. The story is far from concluded, but at least Ember & Ash doesn't leave us with a nail-biting cliffhanger, rather a break at a pivital point.
My final rating: 3.5 stars
**I received an advance review copy of this book via NetGalley for which I voluntarily chose to write an unbiased review.**
“In the dark of the night, there is passion and destruction…” and I devoured every second of it. Ember Thorne, the FMC, is a criminal defense attorney who lives in a world of logic, control and very clear lines. Although she’s never really felt part of that world and especially her ever absent parents…That is until a blue eyed stranger walks in and shatters every rule she has ever lived by. Suddenly, she is pulled into a hidden world of angles, demons and the dangerous truths that live between them and nothing she thought she understood about right and wrong survives the fallout.
What I loved: Urban paranormal romantasy vibes that are easy to fall into. The world building is smooth and accessible. Gives you the headspace to dive into the storyline without being cumbersome. Slow burn banter and forbidden romance that is tense and when the MMC, Micah, enters the scene, it sizzles with anticipation. Even with a scene or two that repeats some dialogue toward the middle of the story (it’s still going through revisions/editing), the story’s pacing and intensity never let up.
I could not put this book down. If you love urban paranormal romance with danger, heat, angel/demon intrigue, and a slow-burn that feels like it might combust at any second, this one needs to be on your list. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntary.
It starts like a typical crime show—Ember, a criminal defence attorney, defends a guy accused of brutally killing multiple women. She doesn't believe he did it, and we go from there. But if you're thinking we go full "Criminal Minds" with the plot, it couldn't be further from the truth. When Ember isolates after the verdict, she gets thrown into the world of Nephilim, demons, and the war they bring with them.
I really enjoyed the pacing and, surprisingly for me, I enjoyed the first-person narration as well. I'm usually a third-person gal, but it works well here. The secondary characters are very likeable, especially Silas and Gabrielle—I would definitely enjoy more of their stories in the future. The world-building in this one is a bit limited to certain parts, but I guess more is coming in the next instalment.
When it comes to the main characters, both Ember and Micah are relatable in their respective roles and upbringing. But honestly, I was a bit tired of them having the same conversation throughout the book with the same results (honestly people, what's the point if you already know the other person's stance)?
Overall, the premise is interesting, and while we don't get much background on the Nephilim yet, since this is going to be a series, I expect that to be developed more. This book focuses more on Ember's introduction to their world and, as such, it does its job (even with Micah's controversial methods, but hey, if it works and everyone lives?). It ends on a cliffhanger, so be prepared for that—it will leave you wanting to know more immediately.
Thank you to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy.
✨️✨️"They became the Fallen, no longer welcome in the kingdom above, and now they live amongst us, divided between good and evil, some fighting for redemption while others embrace the bowels of hell. They are both the light that burns through the darkness and the darkness itself. They are the Nephilim."✨️✨️
Ember Thorne is a criminal defence attorney with a wrongly accused client on trial for Murder. On the day of her 27th birthday - the same day her client is due to receive his verdict - her entire life and destiny are thrown into absolute thrilling chaos. On the run from the dangers that she can feel coming for her, Ember hides away at her parents cabin, when the handsome blue-eyed stranger who had helped her on the street, saves her life and shelters her from the demon on her tail. The only life she has ever known is gone. She must come to grips with who and what she is in the coming battle between good and evil - between angels and demons. Can she trust in herself, he knowledge and her own determination that she will end up on the right side of war to come.
"Choice is free will, and free will is a gift or a curse, determined by who yields its power."
"You weren't born to run. You were born to fight. "
Ember and Ash is an urban paranormal fantasy romance that explores the world of angels and demons disguised amongst the humans. Centred around themes of bonded mates, hidden identity, hidden magic and found family - dont forget to throw in a little of the chosen one and he's too good for me - and you have an ACOTAR/Crecent City x Buffy new fan favourite, with a Labrador of an MMC who to everyone else other than her - is a Tiger and Royalty of his own domain.
The banter in Ember and Ash is incredible. Yes, there is insta-lust/insta-connection. However, what makes up for it is the feistieness and take-no-shit attitude of an FMC! Ember is a stubborn smart ass with a brain and is very happy to put the MMC in his place. Along with great banter are the side characters - two characters shone for me with their playful banter, one-liners, and their protective nature. I wish the story had a little more of a slow burn love story with a later revealed connection and some bigger plot twists. However, I loved the thrilling nature of the fight scenes. Lisa has managed to write some epic scenes throughout the story where you are literally sitting on the edge of your seat and had me questioning if this was really a thriller rather than a romance novel.
If you love angels and demons, good vs evil and an FMC that has to overcome what she thought she knew - with her new reality and what she must become - then this is the book for you. Following a more contemporary romance writing style that focuses heavily on the romance plot with a detailed storyline and character development. I have thoroughly enjoyed the change in pace from the heavy world building, plot/romance romantasy writing style, and Ember and Ash gripped my attention from start to finish.
Definitely can't wait to read book 2 and see where Ember's story takes her!
Ember and Ash presents an intriguing premise and a high-stakes fantasy romance, but the execution left me with lingering questions - particularly around the worldbuilding, character motivations and emotional consistency.
The worldbuilding, while imaginative, felt underdeveloped. The magic system lacked clearly defined boundaries, which made it difficult to understand the true cost of power. At times, magic appeared to have limitations, yet in other moments characters were able to bend reality to their will without any apparent consequence. This inconsistency weakened the tension, as there was little sense of risk or sacrifice when magic was used.
Character motivations were another area that needed more clarity. Ember's decision to share her visions with Micah felt abrupt and contradictory. Earlier, she was deeply reluctant to confide in anyone for fear of being seen as unstable, yet she suddenly chooses to reveal something so personal without sufficient buildup or justification. Similarly, the swift and unquestioning loyalty pledged to Ember by others felt unearned - especially given the repeated acknowledgement that she could potentially turn evil. The ease with which everyone accepted her authority diminished what could have been a powerful conflicted moment.
The central mythology surrounding Ember's identity as the Aza was also vague. The narrative never fully explains why others believe she is the Aza, nor does it explore why Ember herself comes to accept this role so quickly. Rather than a gradual or relevatory discovery, her realization seems to occur without the necessary emotional or narrative groundwork.
The romantic dynamic between Ember and Micah, while charged with sexual tension, was inconsistent. Their relationship swung rapidly between attraction and emotional distance, creating a hot-and-cold pattern that felt more disorienting than compelling. While the tension surrounding their shared mission was effective at times, the lack of clarity about their "special bond" and the constant emotional reversals made it difficult to fully invest in their connection.
Overall, Ember and Ash has the foundation for an engaging fantasy romance, but clearer rules, stronger character motivations, and more deliberate emotional development would have greatly strengthened the story.

Wow! I was immediately drawn into the story of criminal DA Ember Thorne! This is my first introduction to Lisa and she did not disappoint!
Ember defends the innocent, or so she thought. She starts seeing things after an encounter with a man outside the courthouse. After a skirmish at her parent's cabin, she is rescued by a man who has eyes like hers. She has seen him before. Who is he? Why was she attacked?
Even more, who is she? A whole other world exists besides humans? What is happening? To be thrown into a world you didn't even know existed and then be told you will help bring the demons down? Twenty seven years is not enough time to prepare for something like this; especially when you had no idea what would happen you turned 27!
Light vs dark. Angels vs demons. Good vs evil.
Protect the innocent and defeat the demons. Which side is she on?
Wow, again I say wow! That was fire! I DEVOURED this book in 2 days! This book is very engaging and I didn't want to stop reading! I was hooked from the beginning and the story never let up!
Add this to your TBR! The pacing of the book is perfect. The banter between the FMC and MMC is great. It is such a captivating book that leaves you wanting to read the next book right away, as this book ends on a cliffhanger! I need book 2; like yesterday!
"Sometimes you have to accept what you cannot change and charge onward anyway."
"Your mind is both your strength and your weakness."
"Acceptance of what is already lost is sometimes the only way forward."
"Knowledge really is power."
Thank you Lisa and BookFunnel for the arc. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review. Thanks for choosing me.
I'll be completely honest, I was going to stop reading this book. The first few chapters didn't necessarily hook me. But I'm glad I kept reading because I found myself completely captivated a few chapters later, and that feeling didn't stop until the end.
Micah may not be a hero the likes of which we're used to, but he's definitely the hero we need. He's broody, rough around the edges, and sarcastic, and yet he's affectionate and kind when he has to be. He can be a hard ass but he's also a safe place to land. He rules over his people with grace and is respected for it.
Ember is coming into her own. She has a lot to learn in a short period of time. She has to learn to trust herself and the others surrounding her in order to be able to succeed at the mission placed before her. She's strong and determined. I'm also of the opinion that she's a badass. Without knowing who or what he is, she decides to confront Jeremy. Alone. It was either that or certifiable. I chose badass. Hands down every single time I thought about it.
They were fire together. It was beautiful to watch. I can't wait for their journey to continue because that ending left me with my mouth open and a shout to Lisa Renee Jones for leaving me hanging in the best way.
PS A huge thank you for including the glossary as I referred back to it throughout the book to keep the terms straight in my head. Great addition to an incredible book.
Thank you Lisa Renee Jones and team for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
Ember, a skilled attorney, wins a case that she hopes will skyrocket her career. On the day of the verdict, Ember has mysterious visions that lead her to believe she defended a guilty man. After being rescued by Micah, and being introduced to a world of demons and demons hunters, Ember must learn to harness her power. Will she bring the end of times, or will she be a force of good in a battle to save mankind?
I loved the first 25% of this book. Ember is a strong, independent protagonist. She's career driven and strives to protect the innocent. I enjoyed the trial, her discovery of magic, and her internal struggle with the outcome of the trial.
Once Micah makes his appearance and she embarks on her training, the book rapidly becomes repetitive and too dialogue driven.
The banter between Ember and Micah becomes a repetitive dialogue of "what aren't you telling me", "read the book to find out", and "you aren't ready to know.". These phrases were used over and over and it truly made the characters insufferable. The miscommunication/misunderstanding tropes are very heavily used in this book.
As the story went on, Ember transformed from a controlled and driven woman to one that is whiny and obstinate. Micah's attitude toward Ember was enough to give the reader whiplash. He was too back and forth with his feelings and it made the book read in a very juvenile way.
Unfortunately, I did not feel invested enough in the characters, plot, or world to continue the series.
Ahhh this book grabbed me from page 1 and did not let me breathe once 🫠 Ember as a criminal defense attorney with a whole destiny burning under her skin. Shes sharp, stubborn and suddenly thrown into a world of angels demons, forbidden truths and dangerrr 🫣
Micah is that slow burn kind of intense that sneaks up on you. Every time he stepped on the page I felt that drop in my chest. Their connection is magnetic in that messy irresistible way where you know everything is about to explode. The fantasy world feels vivid and heavy with secrets and the action scenes had me actually sitting up straighter.😮💨
I loved the betrayal, tension, the fire and the desperate need to survive something so much bigger than them. And the ending. Yeaaaa. I didnt recover. I love when a book makes me feel like I’ve been running🫠
Tropes 🔥 Angel vs demon ❤️🔥 Forbidden love 🫶🏻 Fated mates energy 🌪️ Hidden magic 👑 Royal hero 💥 Good vs evil
On her 27th birthday, brilliant defense attorney Ember Thorne realizes—the moment her client walks free—that she was wrong about his innocence. From there her normal life unravels fast: demons, Nephilim, prophecies, and a crystal seer with dark hair, light-blue eyes, and a masculine earthy scent.
The premise is sharp, the world intriguing, and the MMC’s ability to cook is an undeniable plus. The miscommunication between Ember and Micah hurts sometime, you just want to put them in a room and throw the key away. But it’s a solid, entertaining paranormal romantasy setup and I am looking forward to the sequel
Rating: 3.5 → 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
For you if you like: paranormal romantasy • fallen angels & demons • moody MMCs who can cook
Not for you if you don’t like: miscommunication • familiars • FMC turning fighting goddess in an instant
Loved this book. Thank you so much for the arc. The writing was so well done and I cant wait to read more from this author. I couldn’t put this one down and finished it in a couple days
Thank you to the Author and Netgalley for providing me with the E-arc in exchange for my review. All opinions are my own. 3.5/3.75 ⭐ rounded up
Flew through the first 30% of this book. The book starts out strong with a criminal /thriller theme with the mfc Ember who is a badass defence attorney she’s giving Olivia Pope vibes. Very fast paced and I loved the Banter between Ember and Oliver but then he just disappears not be mentioned again. Micah and Ember had so much potential for some serious sexual tension. At this point I found Ember to be annoying and the inner dialogue very repetitive. I did still find myself invested in the story and the mystery of who the red winged man is which we come across at the end. I look forward to continuing the series.
Thank you to Lisa Renee Jones for my advanced reader copy of this book.
I’m at 45% and have not picked it up in like two weeks and tried again tonight but just can’t do it. I’m sure it’s someone’s cup of tea but I’m having a hard time taking it seriously. The big bad guy’s name being Jeremy makes me cringe every time I read. The whole “I don’t trust you” “read my mind then” “no that’s not cool” back and forth Ember and Micah keep having is too repetitive and negatively impacts my desire to continue the story. The same premise of “we’re going to this place to train but now I don’t trust you there” is also getting to be a bit much. And I am liking the characters less and less the more I read it.

Ember & Ash is an intense fantasy about Nephilim! Ember is a criminal defense attorney, always wanting to protect the innocent. Until she turns 27, and "comes of age" to find out she's something else entirely. First, let's say how much I appreciate an older FMC! Yes, the chosen one is finally not barely out of teenhood! She's passionate and strong-willed, and when the rug is pulled completely out from under her, she is so lost and confused. Suddenly she starts seeing demons, and the client she defended with certain belief that he was innocent, is suddenly giving her visions.
That's when we meet Micah, and to be honest I still don't know how I feel about him. He's rude and abrupt and apparently delicious but swoony he is not. At least not yet. So he takes it upon himself to train Ember so she can activate all her assets and fight the demons back. You see, there's a prophesy, but Micah won't tell her anything. No, instead he pushes her away, sticks her in a chair, and tells her to read the lore. Ok but she's not Sam Winchester (had to throw that in there). Just give her something! So that part was getting repetitive and annoying, when he kept getting close and pushing her away and refusing to answer her questions.
But then he shows her some amazing places in their realm. Absolutely love the butterfly scene, and now I understand the cover. Ok let's talk about the cover, since that's something we do here at the blog. It's such a great pairing of pure and beautiful (glowing butterflies, blue roses) and the scary evil (red flames) and I can't tell if that's a serpent or just thorns. The dagger, well you already know I have feelings about sword/dagger covers but this one is done well. And yes, she has some she fights with.
There are so many secrets and that is annoying to Ember and also to the reader. He is trying to protect her but also the rest of the world from her, but she flip flops between running off to fight something or being in utter fear of what she may become. She wants to be good, but she's afraid she might not be. But as she trains and expands her abilities, their connection grows. Eventually it heats up, though personally I prefer my slow burn to sizzle with yearning and desire but this was more hot and cold whiplash.
The ending, oh wow the ending was quite the shocker. It left me super excited to see what happens next. Who is the Nephilim with the red tipped wings? And what will her Judgement be?
This story had a fantastic hook—I was immediately drawn in by Ember, a lawyer defending a high-stakes murder case. The tension really ramped up as strange occurrences began to haunt her. However, the momentum slowed down once the love interest, Micah, was introduced. I found the magic system confusing, and Micah’s 'cryptic mentor' act—telling Ember to just 'read and believe'—felt more frustrating than mysterious. Thankfully, the ending regained its footing with a major cliffhanger that definitely has me curious enough to pick up the next book.

After winning a high-profile case that should have launched her career, defense attorney Ember Thorne is shaken by disturbing visions that suggest she may have helped a guilty man go free. Her world unravels further when she’s targeted by a malevolent force she can’t understand—until Micah, a blue-eyed stranger with secrets of his own, rescues her and draws her into a hidden realm where angels, demons, and ancient power are terrifyingly real. As Ember discovers a dormant ability within herself, she must confront a destiny that could either unleash apocalypse or spark humanity’s salvation.
The beginning of the book had be intrigued, particularly as a lawyer myself, I could appreciate that side of Ember. She's driven, independant and has all the makings to be a strong FMC. Unfortunately, once Ember meets Micah and starts to discover her magic, the book went downhill from there. I didn't like the romance between Ember and Micah at all, I found them to become quite annoying which is tiring when 90% of the story is about them. The dialogue tries to be banterous, which is was to an extent, but then it becomes so heavily repetitive I could have predicted the responses myself - they were always 1 of 2 things: "Go read the book to find out", or "You can't know yet so go read the book to the get the knowledge". Honestly Micah just tell her already!
Also, the answer to everything was "Magic". How did you do that? Where did that food come from? How did you apparate from place A to B so quickly? Magic. Which is totally fine, but when you read this same back-and-forth over and over, it just makes me want to skip over it.
I liked the supporting cast - I see a lot of potential for the Ember / Gabriella relationship. I liked Ember. Micah needs quite a lot of work - there wasn't much to his character to be honest - and I think that would really elevate the story and move it forwards faster in the middle section.
The start and the ending did have me intrigued - the story ends on a cliffhanger which I kind of expected given this is a series. I do want to know what happens next because I feel like we're at the turning point where we finally progress into the next stage of Ember's story, but I don't know if I want to know enough to pick up book two as soon as it comes out.
This is not my usual type of read but I thought I would try something new. I was especially excited to read a new type of book from a NYT bestselling author.
This book about angels and demons carries all the typical things you would read in this type of book. What I didn’t expect was the unique magics , the romance or the cliffhanger ending.
Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. I will be anxiously awaiting book 2.
I didn’t connect well with the FMC, Ember. I found her to be quite a frustrating character. I did love that she started out as a lawyer. I was also disappointed in how there were many things throughout the book that had no closure. I am hoping to see that the closure to these will come in book 2.
I fell in love with the MMC as well as the side characters as well as the world. Although, the MMC was so hot and cold toward the FMC that I wanted to scream.
The author’s worldbuilding is richly-detailed. I loved that the FMC was based in Austin and the author knew enough about Austin that I felt like I had gone home.
I appreciate the opportunity the author gave me to read this copy in advance of release. All opinions are my own.
"Fear is a weakness, a deadly blade, sharp and precise, and when wielded by your enemy, as lethal as it is without limits."
⭐⭐⭐.5
Ember Thorne, a well respected defense attorney is fighting in the trial that could make or break her career. She soon learns that who she's defending is much more dangerous than even she thought possible. And when a mysterious stranger, with eyes like hers, saves her life, she understands that she could very well be the one that could doom or save the world.
I got this as a read now e book on NetGalley and I was actually pleasantly surprised. I didn't have super high expectations but I was intrigued by the story, which is why I picked it. It has a nice amount of real life thriller and supernatural thriller. I did find it repetitive in some spots in terms of dialogue but the connection between her and Micah makes up for it. I was kind of hoping for a bit more battle scenes and not as much of just her discovering her powers, but I assume we will get more of that in the coming books.
ARC review. First introduction to Lisa Renee Jones. This book kept me turning pages to find out what happens next.
Story starts with MFC as a defense attorney for someone charged with murder. Her whole world is flipped inside out when the verdict comes back as not guilty. She finds out nothing about her life is as it seemed. She is living in a world of humans/angels/demons and her defendant is a demon. She is saved by the MMC from this demon and the story builds on how she is the good that will defeat all demons and how she has overcome something this demon has done to her and bring her true light out and defeat him with the assistance of the MMC and his friends. The story does not end with a cliffhanger, rather a cut in action and cannot wait for 2nd book
3.75 ⭐️ Thank you net galley for this ARC of ember & ash. Ember, a criminal attorney is thrust in to a world with angels & demons. This book starts out like a crime thriller, ember believes her client is innocent of murdering women but it’s not until she gets him off that she starts to get visions and her life explodes before her eyes. Being hunted by demons and she feels like she’s going crazy until a beautiful man/angel michah explains what she is and he’s there to protect her. He finally reveals she could be the destruction or saviour of the world. This book has an intriguing plot and some great characters. There is yearning, finding inner strength and a mighty villain. I’m interested to see where the rest of this story goes.
I received this book as an ARC and I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did!! Got me out my reading slump from the past week. It follows a FMC who is turning out to be extremely powerful and the world depends on her, she is going to save or ruin it!! I was throughly engrossed in the storyline and the world buliding, the politics, the dynamics, the different creatures ranging from mythical to levels of demons! My only criticism is that the MMC was quite repetitive during the middle and I needed MORE!!! I honestly needed another 100-200 pages of this book before the next one 😪 I gave it a solid 4 stars ❣️ Out December 18th
Good start on new angel/demon fantasy series. The FMC is in her late twenties and a successful criminal defense attorney, which is a respite that she’s not a high school senior. She’s thrust into the world of demons and angels and is the key to either saving the world or destroying it. The ‘will they or won’t they’ back in forth between the FMC and MMC was a little tedious in parts but hopefully it will be flushed through in the subsequent books. The world building was a little vague but the glossary in the front was a helpful tool.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Angels and demons with unexpected twists. Slow burn romance, very slow burn. Would be 5 stars if I felt more of a connection between them. Well worth the read. And that ending? I don’t think I can patiently wait for the next book.
