A Snare So Beautifully Twisted: A Spicy Dark Fantasy Enemies-to-Lovers Romance

Rate this book
He was supposed to die. I was supposed to forget him. But fate has a wicked way of binding us with blood, thorns, and fire.

After losing the elf I loved to the gallows, I vowed vengeance—not with blades, but with herbs.

Hidden beneath the noses of the guards, I sabotage their executions and save the condemned. Everything is going smoothly… until I rescue him.

The Bloodied Thorn.

An infamous elven assassin, cold and brutal, with a hatred for humans as sharp as his aim. Saving him was supposed to be a quiet act of defiance. Instead, he turns my life upside down.

Now the guards are hunting us both, and I’m forced to flee into the wilds—with him. Bound to me by a life debt he loathes and a lust he refuses to name, he’s my reluctant protector. But the fire in his golden-green eyes says this isn’t hate.

It’s obsession.

And I’m not sure if I’ll survive it—or if I even want to.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really loved this one! It has all the juiciest of the tropes.

I will try to describe this without spoilers but I can make no promises. If you really, really don’t want any heads up on the story, just skip to the bottom of my review and see the tropes and things to expect.

The mfc Mirae is completely badass, she was born into a faction that are raised to be assassins, the Black Wolves. She has left them for reasons that are revealed a little at a time throughout the book, in a thoughtful way. She is broken, strong and fiercely independent.

The mmc Ravaen is also completely badass. The grouchiest, dark, broody, broken, tortured, morally gray elf who comes across her path. 😅

The story begins with Mirae saving Ravaen, and he feels he owes her a life debt. She is an outcast in a human village, and Ravaen saves her from some real creeps bent on rape and probably murder. She ends up with him and his troupe of elves who are basically trying to find and kill the very group and human that Mirae has vowed to kill to avenge her deceased lover. Ravaen hates everything about Mirae, yet he is overcome with insta-lust for her while hating her in the most delicious enemies-to-lovers trope, 🌶️ and afterwards he still hates her, and the broody, dark personality he has is prevalent. She chooses to stay and work her vengeance on the Red Sash that took her lover from her from within the elven camp. Ravaen insists she stay with him because of his debt, and the forced-proximity trope opens up. 😍

The adventure begins and the world building and character development are spot on. The pace is great. As their relationship develops, there is so much angst, I had to put it down for a few minutes to regroup. 🥲 💔

The adventure ending is AMAZING. Ravaen is taken by the Red Sash and Mirae chooses to go back to her Black Wolf roots to rescue him. This part of the story literally had my skin prickling and my heart rate up. She unearthed the can of whoop-ass that only a Black Wolf could. 🙌

I really enjoyed the ride, and the vibes and feelings this story brought out were exactly what I’ve been seeking.
The story is nothing like JA’s From Blood and Ash but the feelings evoked are very similar.

Too much retconn

This story had so much potential and the author is a good writer and storyteller but it’s almost like she forgot what she wrote in previous chapters.

Too many things were in direct opposition in the story, like what the characters were saying/feeling.

Examples and spoilers:
Mirae saying she’d never been loved before but killed the only person who loved her. In the same thought. That makes no sense.

Mirae saying she’s never loved, but at the beginning of the book saying the Red Sashes killed her love Faedren.

Or Ravaen’s back story with his wife, first he describes her as a woman who was so well loved then a few chapters later saying he doesn’t think he ever loved her. I think that was supposed to come across as a realization for him But then at the very end of the story he’s telling Mirae he never did love his wife. Also, saying his wife died because she refused to fight back the soldiers because she took a vow to not harm a living thing but then him admitting she MAJOR SPOILER poisoned their son to hurt him since she knew he didn’t love her. THAT makes absolutely no sense.

To much was retconned and it took me out of the story so much that I couldn’t really enjoy it.

I didn’t want it to end.

This was definitely a toxic love trope. If there is such a thing. I wouldn’t call it enemies to lovers.
I can’t think of a “common” trope to name. 🥴 WAIT! I take that back. Touch her and ☠️ would be one for sure.

Our FMC saves the life of MMC, but he is no fan of hers. He is a grumpy without the sunshine. Did I end up loving him by the end of it? Yes. Yes I did.
I’ve seen a few reviews regarding the toxicity and treatment of the FMC. Sadly, I think this is a reality for quite a few people. It may not be something you wanna read about and that’s fine, but I liked it.

Oddly enough I was hoping the story would somehow continue, but it doesn’t. It is a standalone with a resolution for our main characters.

I have never wanted to shake some sense into a MMC more than Ravaen!! I absolutely loved this book, all of it, even the parts that made me wanna smack an idiot on the forehead. The writing, the world building, and the characters were pretty dang great. It is a dark romantasy, it's not as dark as some other, but it feels like it's the right amount of dark for this world. The trauma bonding was good, didn't feel forced, didn't feel rushed for the most part. The FMC and her background reminds me of the Witcher and her resilience and resolve of finally accepting who and what she is is really good.

Ok Ravaen was really getting on my nerves. Like I loved him at first but then his little “tantrums” he kept throwing. And Valaen always stepping in for him. Then him being jealous because his friend was nicer to Mirae. But he redeemed himself towards the end. There was definitely some character growth on his side! It wasn’t as dark as I thought going in, yes he was crude, and there was definitely some tough scene to get through. Like child loss. But overall I think enjoyed it!
