Artifacts and Enigmas is incredible fun for Sherlock Holmes fans who love sci-fi gizmos.

Set in the same universe as Darran's The Engineer novel, it's a set of independent interlinked stories where engineer hero, Actaeon, teams up with Aethelgard from the local equivalent of the police department to unlock the secrets behind crimes committed with the sci-fi gizmos left by a lost civilisation.

The setting is a post-apocalyptic society where humanity lives surrounded by the mystery technologies and species left by their ancestors. Whether it's cordyceps-inspired mind control or dodging lasers in the nick of time, it's entertaining and original throughout, as the pair work together to - eventually (spoilers) - fight the setting's equivalent of Moriarty.

Unlike Sherlock Holmes and Watson, Actaeon and Aethelgard have complementary abilities. Actaeon is the genius engineer and Aethelgard is brilliant at understanding people's motives and their cop-buddy relationship is part of the joy of the stories.

Just a really great read! Probably best to read The Engineer first, but it also works as a fun standalone to the series.
