With his friend Ergania firmly settled on the throne of Pilia, Kyron's thoughts turned to home. However, at his fleet's first stop on its journey home he is asked to help against the mad God of Magic, Wexkarn, who is rampaging through Uxridland and the Finewenian Empire. Not wanting to miss the chance to meet the famous Taroniah and appalled by the God's actions, he joins the campaign. Meanwhile, back in Marhingia, all is not well, with the surrounding Kingdoms all coming together and deciding to take advantage of his prolonged absence!
I grew up in Sydney Australia but have lived on the Gold Coast, Australia for over thirty years. I have been many things over my life, courier driver, retail sales assistant, casino croupier, small business owner, a bankrupt former small business owner, a graphic designer, poker tournament operator and most recently an Uber driver. I have a marvellous wife and two great kids (both adults now) plus a border collie cross dog who thinks she's a human. I have always liked science fiction books, especially gung-ho space opera, time travel and alternate history genres. The first fiction book I read that I liked was Eagle of the Ninth and fist Science Fiction book I read and liked was Foundation by Asimov. My favourite authors, at the moment, are David Weber, Lois McMaster Bujold, Christopher Nuttall and Pam Uphoff. Weber writes the best space opera while Bujold is simply the best writer and Miles Vorkisgan an amazing character. Chris Nuttall rarely writes anything that is only so-so and his Schooled in Magic books are the best magic school series I have read so far. Pam Uphoff writes primarily a cross dimensional series called the Wine of the Gods with the Directorate stories offshoot. These are delightful, entertaining and often thought provoking books that I love. Chris Nuttall and Pam Uphoff inspired me to "have a go mate" and so I have. My first novel is On the Rocks, the first story of Arturo Sandus (Sanders) and his adventures as a Space Ship captain marooned on a primitive swords and sandals era planet. Sort of...
The previous book ’Taroniah at Bay’ end with Kyron teaming up with Taroniah in the middle of the war with the deranged god Wexkarn. This book ends with Kyron teaming up with Taroniah in the middle of the war with the deranged god Wexkarn !!!! This basically repeats what was in the previous book, but from Kyron’s perspective. To be fair there is a second storyline as Verenia fights of an invasion of Marhingia, which is by far the more interesting story.
Battle after battle. These are all at home. Kyron is overseas and mostly just interspersed in between the home front to where the story of Taroniah left off. His wife is home functioning as the General in charge of defending her land against overwhelming odds. It would have been nice to a large map available while reading in order to clearly see the battles. Like the prior book, this one is a cliff hanger. Nothing is resolved. Hope it's not long to the next book so the final results are in.
This book runs parallel to Tarona’s adventures and covers Kyron’s queens adventures when the kingdom is attacked in the king’s absence. It doesn’t really advance the story but add a lot detail and some character development to a lot of the side characters in the Kyron storyline.
While this book moves the story along, it lacks a satisfying ending. Not a cliff hanger, just a pause in the action. The book uses multiple POVs, with battles being fought in unconnected wars. I much prefer the books where Taroniah or Kyron improve technology or discover new magical techniques. If you like battle scenes, you will like this book.
Neighboring countries attack Marhingia while Kyron is gone. A woman can’t lead an army, right? And Kyron is very far away fighting, with idiots in charge. Excellent plotting and battle descriptions. I will definitely read the next book in the series.
Kyron is on his way home, but pauses to assist some of his neighbors stave off an invasion. He finally gets to meet and rescue Taroniah, who is in serious straits from fending off a god.
