I’m not being dramatic when I say that this was one of the worst reading experiences I’ve had in a long time. I genuinely felt like I’d been held hostage for 544 pages of pure tedium.
I specifically requested this book because it’s a romantasy set in a magical academy with dark academia vibes, which is something I usually love to read about. Except somehow, this book took all those elements, drained them of life, and presented them in a way that felt oddly detached from its own premise.
The writing is extremely dense and repetitive. Every thought, feeling, and observation is repeated, explained, and then re-explained—just in case you missed it the first two times. I hate when the author’s writing style seems to be the type that doesn’t trust the reader, and here it is so blatantly obvious. I wouldn’t necessarily say the writing is bad, but I do think it’s exhausting to read. The writing style made it very hard for me to enjoy, and it pulled me out of the story very often.
The pacing is a structural mess. The time jumps are very vague and abrupt, which made the book very confusing. When something major happened, it was either sped by with no weight or, even worse, dragged on so long that they lost all impact. For a book about secrecy, danger, and power, the lack of urgency was shocking. I wanted anxiety and suspense, but instead, everything felt flatlined. Not once did I feel like it was gripping. I was just bored, which is the last thing I want from a book that promises magical stakes.
The characters didn’t help either. The heroine, Clara, is described as clever, determined, and capable, but we’re mostly told this rather than shown through layered choices or meaningful action, and frankly, I found her personality to be very annoying most of the time. The love interest, Kaelis, is described as dark and dangerous, yet I swear he literally does nothing to earn that reputation. All he does is brood. The romance (if you can even call it that) is nearly nonexistent for most of the book and then suddenly escalates out of nowhere, and the shift was so jarring. I mean, the romance was interesting at times, but not enough for me to enjoy the book. I wasn’t rooting for the characters, but I wasn’t exactly against them. I just simply didn’t care. And that indifference is what disappointed me most.
The worldbuilding—what should have been the book’s strongest asset felt severely underwhelming. This is where most of my disappointment comes from because I was looking forward to the tarot-based magic system the most. I do think it is genuinely creative, don't get me wrong, it certainly is ambitious, but it never feels fully integrated into the plot. It either arrives in exposition-heavy chunks or gets mentioned vaguely during action scenes, rather than being woven into the emotional or thematic heart of the story. I’ll give the book credit: it tried to take risks with its magic system. But in practice, it didn’t feel risky or alive. Instead, it left me disconnected. I also need to add that the school setting, too, was very under-utilised. I was expecting much more from a story about dark academia; the academy itself often faded into the background. I felt so lost in the atmosphere and place.
Honestly, I’m not sure if what I’ve written here is coherent, because reflecting on this book feels like trying to pull clarity from a fog. If I had to sum up my experience, it was simply too vague, and I felt disengaged. I guess this stems from the writing style, and now I can conclude the author’s writing style isn't for me at all. I wanted to dnf so many times, but for some reason, I kept pushing through, almost like I was gaslighting myself into thinking it would get better, and by the end, I just didn’t have it in me anymore. I know I’m in the minority on this one, but I guess some stories just work better for certain readers than others, and in this case, I discovered this book simply wasn’t for me.
I do understand why some readers might love this, especially for its unique magic system. That was the reason I picked it up, too. And to be fair, if you’re drawn to tarot-based magic systems and want something structurally different from typical romantasy fare, you might find it rewarding. But for me, this was an exhausting, joyless read that I couldn’t wait to finish.

Arcana Academy catapulted me into a dark academia world stitched together with an elaborate card magic system, a socio-political structure loaded with real-world parallels and a classist academy built to favour nepo babies while grinding the poor into powder (so almost non-fiction. lol/sob.). It’s intricate and impressive, that’s for sure.
This book kicks off with a pretty valid enemies dynamic. Clara hates Prince Kaelis, which is fair, because she thinks he put her in prison and killed her mum. That’ll do it. But they pretend to be engaged so she can avoid going back to prison, and in return, she agrees to help him with a couple of quests.
Reading this was a rollercoaster. I oscillated between being captivated, confused, mildly bored and completely obsessed, sometimes all in the span of a single chapter. There is so much going on: Tarot card magic system, deadly trials, magical heists, escape rooms AND a murder mystery component. It’s ambitious storytelling and I respect it. But I’d be lying if I said the pacing and execution didn’t have a few issues.
The first half, especially, leans heavily on exposition. While a lot of it was necessary (because this world is dense), a couple of scenes and dialogue/inner monologue felt redundant, like the author didn’t fully trust the reader to keep up. That said, your mileage may vary. Books are art and art is subjective.
However, there’s a lot to love here, especially if you’re drawn to high fantasy with complex magical systems. These cards aren’t waiting to be collected like Pokémon cards, they’re inked using rare magical mediums that are harvested with blood, sweat and tears. The card-based magic is super layered. I’ve always loved a good magical classroom scene and we actually see Clara working through the inking, wielding, reading of the magic tarot cards and the card battles were fun, and by fun I mean high-stakes/deadly. Those moments helped anchor the worldbuilding and I appreciated that.
On top of that, some “arcanists” are more naturally skilled than others, like Clara, our FMC, who has to hide how competent she is. Turns out I occasionally prefer a protagonist who has to hide her proficiency over the more standard weak-to-strong arc. She can save herself. Love that for her and us.
Additionally, the cast is culturally rich, with fair skin explicitly described rather than assumed as default, which shouldn’t be revolutionary but kind of is. There is thoughtful inclusion with LGBTIQ+ supporting cast which feels organic rather than tokenistic.
Solid female friendships + Bechdel test approved.
Romantically speaking, it was an interesting dynamic. Clara’s got trust issues for days and there seems to be a pinch of miscommunication with her and Kaelis, who is a bit of an adorable cinnamon roll. At times, they even gave me shades of Jude and Cardan. But while the tension was there, the pacing of the romance felt uneven and I found myself craving more development for the eventual payoff.
I’m convinced I would enjoy this 10x more on a reread now I’ve mapped out the card lore and world-building and made peace with it all. I think that ending was beautifully done but very rude though.

This book put me through so many emotions..
The magic system was so unique, I never read anything like this before. I absolutely loved it, it was such an amazing story.
I had to get the ALC too, because I couldn't wait to reread it!! It's absolutely one of my favourite reads of this year.
Arcana Academy was founded to teach and control Arcanists, those who have the ability to ink, read and wield tarot cards and their magic. Power only reserved to those under the crown.
Clara was imprisoned for using it illegally. Until Prince Kaelis, dark and enigmatic headmaster of the academy, helps her escape, gives her a new name and a place in his academy as a first year student. She will be his bride-to-be and help him steal the tarot cards from his father, cards that are key in creating a powerful card, a card that can change worlds. He is her enemy, one she swore to hate, but there is more to him than it seems. Some choices will be hard to make..
I absolutely loved Kaelis, it's always the tortured souls that get me. He and Clara fought so hard against their feelings, it made me want more of them.
But this book was so much more than that, with the trials Clara had to go through at the academy, the heist, the secrets. Clara was strong and determined, but so stubborn. I loved her even when she drove me crazy.
I loved the audiobook too, the narrator did a great job. It was very slow though, I had to listen at 3x speed for it to be at my liking, when I usually listen at 2x, max 2,5x. But other than that, it was really well done and I enjoyed it.
I'm not gonna lie, the beginning was slow, it took me a while to get into the book, but once I did, it didn't let go. I was consumed by it.
I have so many questions still, I simply don't know how I'm going to survive until book two. That ending...
I promised myself I would stop starting series that aren't finished, but here I am, once again, with questions I won't get answers to for quite some time.. I can't make myself regret it though, I loved this book far too much for that.

⤷ I have read many romantasy books this year that have been entirely disappointing to me. Sadly, Arcana Academy is another one to add to this list.
The book started really well. I enjoyed being dropped straight into the action. I liked the magic system even though it could have been expanded on. The world building felt very underdeveloped. I finished with so many unanswered questions. Why was there an academy that learned this grand magic system just to use it for nobles benefit? Like why would students even enroll? And they were learning to fight with these cards for what? To prepare to fight against whom? And why was a manchild prince headmaster of this academy? What did he even do all day? Maybe these questions were answered (strong chance my mind was wondering as I was pretty bored).
For such a long book, everything felt really surface level. The pacing was everywhere. I didn't connect with anyone. The romance was okay, but that wasn't enough to keep me particularly interested. Sadly, everything felt subpar and I felt indifferent to almost everything that had happened after the halfway point. Won't be picking up book 2

This book was everything I wanted and more! From the first page to the last, Arcana Academy pulled me into its darkly magical world and refused to let go. Elise Kova has crafted a spellbinding story packed with danger, intrigue, and an irresistibly slow-burn romance that had me hooked.
Clara Graysword is the kind of protagonist I love—clever, stubborn, and just reckless enough to keep things interesting. She’s spent her life surviving on the fringes of Eclipse City, but when she’s caught practicing forbidden magic, she’s given an impossible choice: rot in prison or fake an engagement to the enigmatic headmaster of Arcana Academy, Prince Kaelis. From the moment she steps into the academy’s halls, the stakes skyrocket, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

The moment Clara started uncovering hidden corners of the school (and the people within it), I knew I was in for something special.
And then there’s Kaelis. Prince. Headmaster. Schemer. Broody enigma. He and Clara are constantly at odds, and their dynamic is pure gold. The tension between them is thick enough to cut with a blade, and every interaction crackles with intensity. Their relationship develops through moments of trust, betrayal, and reluctant partnership, and I was absolutely living for it.
If I had one tiny critique, it would be that the pacing wavers a bit—some sections felt like they needed more breathing room, while others flew by at lightning speed. But honestly? I didn’t care. I was too wrapped up in the drama, the stakes, and the sheer fun of this book.
By the time I reached the final pages, I was desperate for more. Arcana Academy delivers everything I crave in a fantasy novel—high-stakes magic, a dangerous yet alluring academy setting, characters who are flawed but oh-so-easy to love, and a romance that burns. If you love dark academia, cunning heroines, and books that leave you breathless, DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS ONE.

This novel is magic! I absolutely loved it! This was my first book that I have read by this author and I will definitely be reading more of her books, because this one simply took my breath away. It brought me into this immersive world of magic and tarot cards! I just know that when this comes out, it will be a best seller. The way this author captured my attention and brought me into this story is beyond amazing. This is full of adventure and mystery that kept me on my toes while reading this! This is a medium paced read filled with lovable characters. It centers around the flaws of the characters as being the main focus. It had strong character developments, as they change and grew in the story. This is a very magical academy that includes a very slow burn romance!

- my thoughts -
if i had to pick one word to describe the fmc, cara, i think it would be cocky. she’s so sure of herself, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially because the mmc is also has a… broody, mysterious vibes going on. she’s definitely pretty annoying at times, but she’s also kind of badass, which makes up for her annoyingness. the mmc, kaelis, is a bit frustrating because i wasn’t sure if i ever fully liked him or not, but i do think he gets better over time. he’s kind of the classic morally grey, daddy issues, misunderstood, dark, grows on you “like a tumor” type.
the plot was so entertaining, and it was really endearing seeing Cara fight for her sister. the magical aspects relating to the cards was really clever and unlike anything i’ve read before. the only real issue was trying to remember what each card did. there is a list of cards and their uses at the back of the book, though. overall, this book was really enjoyable, and will probably end up being one of my favorite books of this year.

I was really looking forward to this book, but the slow pace totally ruined it. Nothing happens in the first half that's memorable. The storyline is phenomenal, who wouldn't want to immerse themselves in a world that involves tarot cards, and the cover of this book just adds the cherry, but the execution fell flat and felt bored.

the set up for book 2 has my stomach in knots I NEED to see this man go feral pls & thank you!!!!!!?!?!

holy fuck? im for the most part at a loss for words at how much i loved this book and how i feel currently so this will most likely be very brief…
dare i say this very well may be one of if not THE fantasy book of 2025? never in my life have i read something so unique and enthralling. ill be quite honest this was a very hard read for me as the magic system and world building was pretty intense but it was SO insanely rewarding and kept me engaged the entire time.
one of my favorite things about this book was the magic, it felt insanely refreshing and in a world where we have so many different fantasies and magic systems i feel like that a very rare thing to accomplish. i loved loved loved every fight scene, i think the use of the cards made everything feel 10x more intense and high stake.
one thing i would have loved to be different about it was the romance, it felt very after thought to me for the most part which was a huge bummer as i am obsessed with kaelis and more importantly clara and kaelis together. however at the same i loved every single second we got with them 🤭 obviously there was a lot going on in this book at all times which could have made it harder to get more moments with them or maybe it was just intentional and this will be more romantasy in the next however many books but i just wanted more more more 😩
i am already at a loss of what on earth i will do with myself until book 2, especially seeing as this doesnt come out officially until july meaning it will most likely be 2026 before the follow up. after the cliff hanger and how much chaos ensued at the end, i fear i will drown in my questions until then? i dont think this book or these characters will ever leave my brain, i do believe i have found my roman empire

⭐️ 3 ⭐️ You must be a tarot card reader/expert to be able to fully enjoy the magic system in this one. This is one of those books where I liked the story but didn’t enjoy the magic system because it was too complex, too confusing and overly dense. The depth of the magic system that the author aimed to create actually backfires in this one because the intended complexity of it tires the reader out. I was becoming sort of like a second job trying to keep up with the tarot card building—most of the time I was always referencing back to my little notes to remind myself what the cards mean. If a book (or major parts of it) makes no sense & you’re having a hard time keeping up—that leaves no room for excitement or enjoyment to keep on reading.

within the first ten percent of reading arcana academy, i was enamoured, desperate to devour this book whenever a valuable spare moment presented itself. it was the unique magic system revolving around tarot cards and the dark academia setting, the backdrop to an engagement of convenience with a hint of ‘forbidden’ attached to it between our leading characters, clara (a student) and kaelis (the headmaster), that caught my attention. what rendered me riveted was the elaborate and detailed world built around a classist society that favours the gifted and nepotism, and the division of the school’s students into four distinct houses—cups, wands, coins and swords—creating a structured magical world involving trials and rituals.
elise kova unveils an environment filled with tension and schemes as readers explore the details of this newfound world amongst tarot card magic; dangerous magical trials; elaborate trap-filled dungeons and mysterious murders. there’s an incredible and substantial amount of storytelling to unpack and whilst i respect the author’s ambitiousness, the sheer amount of coverage needed was borderline ridiculous. it created a really dense introduction that could’ve been whittled down—such as removing some inner monologue and conversations between characters—to the crucial details and the ending could’ve been refined as it became so repetitive. as much as i love navigating detailed world-building, sometimes it’s reasonable to withhold some information for the sake of momentum and pacing, especially if there’s supposed to be more than one book in the series. a minor irritation, but one nonetheless.
in saying that, i loved the level of detail and explicit attention that went into the magic tarot cards. it’s a distinctive magic system that deserved the attention it received throughout this book, that i had a true, genuine time learning more of it. but it’s also an intricate system that’s multi-layered and contributes a significant amount in defining the characters’ ambitions, shaping each one's personalities in turn, that anything less would’ve been a disservice to its originality. delving further through clara’s inking, reading and wielding of the tarot cards made reading more entertaining; it simultaneously elevated the world-building as we immersed ourselves into it. the academy, with all of the rituals, hierarchies and intense magic-based training, also contained dangerous trials which tested clara, but demonstrated her abilities well.

clara graysword was one of the most determined characters in arcana academy, stubborn and steadfast as she searched for answers to the whereabouts of her missing sister. a woman denied privileges and incarcerated for illegally engraving tarot cards. she’s ambitious, talented and thriving on undeniable anger towards an oppressive system. i appreciated that, despite harbouring an immense proficiency in arcana and tarot magic, clara doesn’t always reveal her full potential and instead occasionally minimises her knowledge—it’s a refreshing change from what we’re accustomed to seeing in this genre. i will note that at times, clara could be useless and clueless and for someone who’s supposed to be intelligent, she oftentimes questioned whether she should (or shouldn’t) trust kaelis.
♡ kaelis
the classic cold, dark and brooding male lead character, but with a hidden softer side—that is kaelis, in short. kaelis started off as the enigmatic second prince to the kingdom of oricalis; the headmaster of arcana academy, with unclear ambitions and cautious uncertainties around his motivations. it’s a real shame that his character was somewhat inconsistent; we’re meant to believe that kaelis is calculated and cunning, a step ahead of his adversaries. yet, his failure during one of the most critical moments of his scheme—a failure that resulted in dire consequences—felt dishonest and unjustified. what redeemed kaelis’ characterisation was the softer side he kept hidden from everyone, but clara. i love dark anti-heroes and seeming villains, but there’s something so warming about men who yearn.

nothing appeals to me more than enemies-to-lovers romance, however i don’t want to describe this book as that—the ‘enemies’ is one-sided and more akin to distaste—but the slow-burn romance is immaculate. there’s something almost rewarding reading about characters reaching that final moment in slow-burn romance. it’s like coming home and achieving something worthwhile. combined with forced proximity through an engagement of marriage made things between clara and kaelis better, knowing that kaelis yearns and falls first.
in hindsight, i think i loved this book for the vibes. weaving together a number of much-loved elements—slow-burn romance, dark academia and magical trials, complex friendships and uncertain alliances—arcana academy won’t appeal to everyone. the writing isn’t outstanding—it’s repetitive and inconsistent—and there’s a series of aimless events that either don’t make sense, or have zero relevance to the situation at hand. as mentioned earlier in my review, the sheer amount of information the author included in this book is encumbersome. that aside, i immersed myself into arcana academy and don’t regret a moment of it, and will look forward to the next installment of this series following that heinous ending!

clara graysword was one of the most determined characters in arcana academy, stubborn and steadfast as she searched for answers to the whereabouts of her missing sister. a woman denied privileges and incarcerated for illegally engraving tarot cards. she’s ambitious, talented and thriving on undeniable anger towards an oppressive system. i appreciated that, despite harbouring an immense proficiency in arcana and tarot magic, clara doesn’t always reveal her full potential and instead occasionally minimises her knowledge—it’s a refreshing change from what we’re accustomed to seeing in this genre. i will note that at times, clara could be useless and clueless and for someone who’s supposed to be intelligent, she oftentimes questioned whether she should (or shouldn’t) trust kaelis.

the classic cold, dark and brooding male lead character, but with a hidden softer side—that is kaelis, in short. kaelis started off as the enigmatic second prince to the kingdom of oricalis; the headmaster of arcana academy, with unclear ambitions and cautious uncertainties around his motivations. it’s a real shame that his character was somewhat inconsistent; we’re meant to believe that kaelis is calculated and cunning, a step ahead of his adversaries. yet, his failure during one of the most critical moments of his scheme—a failure that resulted in dire consequences—felt dishonest and unjustified. what redeemed kaelis’ characterisation was the softer side he kept hidden from everyone, but clara. i love dark anti-heroes and seeming villains, but there’s something so warming about men who yearn.

nothing appeals to me more than enemies-to-lovers romance, however i don’t want to describe this book as that—the ‘enemies’ is one-sided and more akin to distaste—but the slow-burn romance is immaculate. there’s something almost rewarding reading about characters reaching that final moment in slow-burn romance. it’s like coming home and achieving something worthwhile. combined with forced proximity through an engagement of marriage made things between clara and kaelis better, knowing that kaelis yearns and falls first.
in hindsight, i think i loved this book for the vibes. weaving together a number of much-loved elements—slow-burn romance, dark academia and magical trials, complex friendships and uncertain alliances—arcana academy won’t appeal to everyone. the writing isn’t outstanding—it’s repetitive and inconsistent—and there’s a series of aimless events that either don’t make sense, or have zero relevance to the situation at hand. as mentioned earlier in my review, the sheer amount of information the author included in this book is encumbersome. that aside, i immersed myself into arcana academy and don’t regret a moment of it, and will look forward to the next installment of this series following that heinous ending!

i loved elise kova’s air awakens series when i read it back in high school, and was blown away by the world building and character development in that series.
while i enjoyed her romantasy married to magic series, it didn’t hit the same way.
arcana academy took the world building/magic systems in air awakens, and the romance from married to magic, and entwines them seamlessly. i’m on the edge of my seat for the next book!!

Soooooo..i finally finished, the 1st 30% was good, and the last 20% was good, it just got modded for me in the middle, which made it hard to push through….with that being said i will continue with the series, the way this one ended, i feel book 2 is going to be better.

a 23 year old boy should not be headmaster of a school. he should be in the club!!!!!
this was genuinely such a cool concept, between the tarot magic system and a mysterious deadly magic academy, but i didn’t care about any of the plethora of characters enough for this to be enjoyable. not even the main characters. i can usually look past weaker side characters, but if the main characters are so boring they could blend into the wallpaper, it’s a miss for me.
not to mention this is simply too long of a book for how few things actually happen in terms of forward plot movement. even giving it the grace of it being the first book of a planned trilogy with things that need building up, and the added grace of it being a fairly complicated magic system, there was still such a painful lack of thrill that i struggled the entire way through it.
however, if you’re a big tarot fan and are feeling patient and ready to commit to the long haul, this might be more of a fun read or you! there are a lot of little mysteries built into the story that helped keep me going when the plot dragged. but if you’re looking for a fast, fun, and easy fantasy story to get into, with characters that are easy to invest in, shelve this one for another time.

i was hoping id love this but ill be honest, it was really hard to care about any of the characters😭 i felt absolutely nothing for them and if i cant care for the characters, it's not getting more than 3/3.5 stars🥲 (but a lot of people love this book, so this could totally be a "me" thing!)
Arcana Academy's biggest strength had to be it's magic system. genuinely adored every aspect of it and learning about how it worked and the different cards/what they did was so so cool!! i loved picturing the fight scenes as i read them, it really gave sorcerer-like vibes and felt intense. and seeing the conditions that came with using Major cards compared to Minor cards was soo interesting, i could definitely see how much thought was put into this world and its magic system!
now the characters... for one thing id have to say that there were honestly too many side characters (especially at one point i swear it was like within 2 chapters we got 10 different names) who were pretty much around the FMC, clara, so there'd be moments where they appeared and id forget who they were completely😭 although eventually i got used to the more important side characters but i wouldn't really be able to say much about them except for alor, luren, silas, and eza honestly. the starcrossed club were just... there, which is disappointing considering how important they were to clara.
which brings me to clara! im sorry was i the only one who did not really like her?? the first quarter-ish of the book, i actually was enjoying her POV and loving her & kaelis! and i dont know when it started but she kind of started annoying me? some of her rationale was certainly interesting is all i'll say, but she did have some great moments i liked. otherwise, i was kind of bored of her character. (i was actually more interested in some of the side characters over her??)
and im sad to say i didnt really care for kaelis either😭 again, i felt like i was obsessed with him in the beginning and his potential but it did not hit at all?? he was kind of boring. honestly he's not even evil (tbf ive seen worse from MMCs in e2l fantasy romances AND also maybe i was just comparing him too much to my love aldrik from air awakens) so i guess maybe thats also why i felt the enemies to lovers here wasnt really that good? it IS slow burn which i do like there but i also didnt even care about either of the characters, so that probably affected the romance for me.
also this is 100% a me thing, but i got so bored around the halfway mark, i genuinely had to push myself to finish this because it felt unbearably slow and never-ending🥲 the last 10% was something exciting at last for me but oh wow i was very tempted to DNF.
i can definitely see the potential this series has and i'll probably be in the minority with how i felt towards Arcana Academy (it's happened before LOL see heartless hunter/crimson moth), so if you see this review, dont let this discourage you from reading this book!! i might continue the series depending on how im feeling when book 2 releases. definitely sad that one of my most anticipated releases this year flopped for me😭😭 (magic system is amazing tho, dont forget that)

i was obsessed the tarot card magic system in this book, it reminded me a bit of one dark window but still managed to be unique with how the cards were used and what magic they granted. Clara was a likeable fmc, she went into the academy with the goal of finding her sister and she never really strayed from that. the mmc Kaelis was fine, i think he could’ve used some more character depth but i did like the romance between him and Clara. this is one of the few occasions where the plot actually drew me in more than the romance, one thing i will say is that this could’ve been like 50 or so pages shorter. the ending didn’t necessarily surprise me, but it did make me curious about what’s next.

PS: I listened to the audiobook book while reading along.
From the very first page I was hooked. I really enjoyed the world and magic. I thought it was the best part, which surprised me because it's usually the romance. I liked Clara and her determination, wit, and that she wasn't a helpless heroine. Kaelis was a great villain turned love interest. I hated him like Clara but then also started to fall in love as he let her in. I really enjoyed their dynamic.
However, the romance was frustrating at times. The banter felt juvenile at times and there was a moment when it was clear they were no longer enemies and that Kaelis would do anything to protect Clara, but she kept insisting they were enemies. Ma’am, this man is buying you beautiful gowns, nursing you back to health, giving you smoldering glances. He does not hate you, nor is he your enemy. He’s in love with you, dammit! Her denial felt contrived and dragged out tension that didn’t need to be dragged out.
There were also stretches of repeated inner monologue that became redundant and increasingly tedious to get through. But it wasn't so bad that I wanted to stop. I just would skim over it.
The end was thrilling! I guessed a few of the twists, but several still managed to catch me off guard, which I loved. I'm so curious what happens next so I definitely will read the next book!

This was my first novel from Elise Kova and oh my, it won't be my last!!!
I adore a fantasy/romantasy with a dark academia setting and this did it in a way that was ethereal, twisty and completely tension filled. the magic system surrounding tarot cards was as unique as it was fascinating and the micro trope of 'the curriculum but it's trying to kill you,' was so fun to navigate. the love interest too!!!!!! at every given opportunity, I wanted to read this book... it was ALL I could think about! this is my EXACT taste in fantasy I had the time of my life (I'm scared to see how long I need to wait for book 2)

The magic system in this book is among the coolest I’ve ever read! Well developed and detailed without feeling like it’s all been dumped on you at once!
While it took me a minute to get into this one (around the 30% mark) once I was invested I couldn’t stop reading! This was a great start to a series and I still have so many questions!
What's to love…

- political machinations
- mystery (I still have SO many questions)
- SLOW BURN
- New Adult (21 yo FMC) with spice
What's not to love…
- at times I felt like the plot was doing THE absolute most, prison break out + magic academy + heist + trials. I wish we would have focused on a single (or even two) main plots.
- The pacing was not ideal - a slow start, an action packed and fast middle, and then we slowed again towards the end.
- I could have done without the spice tbh - it felt like it was added just to have an explicit scene and check the spice box. I’m totally ok with spice when it adds to the story but this didn’t really do that for me.
🌶️ - Ch. 50 & 52 are the only chapters with explicit scenes, if you prefer you could easily skip ch 50 and avoid most of the spice. The scene in 52 is fairly brief.

One Dark Window meets Harry Potter!
Clara is sentenced to a lifetime in prison for inking tarot cards - a rare power reserved for practitioners at the elite Arcana Academy. She is offered her freedom in exchange for helping the academy's cold headmaster, Prince Kaelis. Her identity is a secret and sheer presence is explained away by her engagement to the second born Prince.
Clara is brash and bold. Highly emotional, yet loyal to those she loves. She also has more power than others and is a great thief and very capable.
Kaelis is cold, calculating, controlling…. Or maybe he’s protective, ambitious, hurting and hiding. He also has a pet cat, Priss.
This was exceedingly sloooooow burn. You are on your hands and knees with a torch for mere crumbs. But these crumbs are akin to luxury chocolate or truffles or caviar.
“If to bring about a new world—a better world—I must be the villain, if I must do evil things for the greater good, then so be it. I’ll play the part now and be reborn a hero in my next life.”
Saying that, I needed more romancing before the main event. It was all very slow and then BAM. And how they got together was not my favourite.
There is a lot of world building to get your head around - the tarot cards magic, the myths, Clara’s past, her family, her old friends and gang. Then you have a lot of names from students to nobility to past connections.
I did love the concept of the tarot card magic system but wish there was more explanation. Maybe diagrams - perhaps this will be added in for the final copy.
Clara didn’t stand out to me as a heroine. She is a very typical romantasy protagonist and Kaelis was the brooding yet misunderstood romance.

Her identity is a secret and sheer presence is explained away by her engagement to the second born Prince.
Clara is brash and bold. Highly emotional, yet loyal to those she loves. She also has more power than others and is a great thief and very capable.
Kaelis is cold, calculating, controlling…. Or maybe he’s protective, ambitious, hurting and hiding. He also has a pet cat, Priss.
This was exceedingly sloooooow burn. You are on your hands and knees with a torch for mere crumbs. But these crumbs are akin to luxury chocolate or truffles or caviar.

Saying that, I needed more romancing before the main event. It was all very slow and then BAM. And how they got together was not my favourite.
There is a lot of world building to get your head around - the tarot cards magic, the myths, Clara’s past, her family, her old friends and gang. Then you have a lot of names from students to nobility to past connections.
I did love the concept of the tarot card magic system but wish there was more explanation. Maybe diagrams - perhaps this will be added in for the final copy.
Clara didn’t stand out to me as a heroine. She is a very typical romantasy protagonist and Kaelis was the brooding yet misunderstood romance.
