A spy who might be an illusionist. A rogue psychologist. A phone-hacking private investigator with the law on his tail. An executioner and an assassin. A fallen astronaut. A gangster’s wife falling further into crime. A soldier forever captured in one moment in history. Three young lovers caught up in the aftermath of the Prague Spring…
ANIMUS is a collection of nine short stories spanning genres, periods and countries – linked only by the recurring appearance of an object that would normally be referred to as inanimate.
A brilliant collection of shorts (with a smattering of not-so-shorts) written in the author’s trademark laconic style. Expect authentic, offbeat dialogue, fruity turns of phrase, a cunning reference to an Oscar Wilde story, and plenty of slightly cryptic skulduggery. Current standouts for me are ‘Shooter’, which captures the narrator’s voice so beautifully, and ‘The Liberation of Vaclav Voracek’, which I could just feel all the way down to my core. I suspect I will select others on the next reading, though. Not a bad apple in the whole bushel.
