Death on the Night Train to Verona: A 1920s Mystery

Rate this book
Everyone wanted a piece of the world’s most beloved film star, but who finally took it?

Italy, 1929. When renowned detective Lord Edgington boards a luxurious night train in Rome, he hopes for attentive service, fine food and perhaps a chance to read his book. But a short distance into the journey, screen siren Geraldine de la Forge is slain in her sleeping compartment, and the master sleuth is called to action.

Adored the world over, Geraldine seemed to have the perfect life, but as Lord Edgington and his grandson investigate, a darker picture emerges. Was it her jealous lover, a wealthy patron with secrets to hide, her ambitious director, or an obsessive fan who cut the life from her? The detectives rush to untangle a web of passion, lies, and betrayal before the killer can strike again.

A fast-paced, witty, and fiendishly puzzling whodunnit in the tradition of Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers. “Death on the Night Train to Verona” will send you thundering towards the final destination and one last dizzying twist.

Writing has always been my passion. It was my favourite hour a week at primary school, and I started on my first, truly abysmal book as a teenager. So it wasn’t a difficult decision to study literature at university which led to an MA in Creative Writing. I spent a long time writing kids’ books, including funny fairy tales, dystopic adventures and serious issue-based YA, before switching to murder mysteries last year.

I grew up in a crime fiction family and spent a long time dreaming up the idea for my detective Izzy Palmer’s debut novel. A Corpse Called Bob is my first full-length book for adults in what is already becoming a long series.

I’m a Welsh-Irish-Englishman originally from South London but now living with my French/Spanish wife and slightly muddled daughter in Burgos, a beautiful city in the north of Spain. I write overlooking the Castilian countryside, trying not to be distracted by the vultures and red kites that fly past my window each day.

A very good read which I did in two sessions. This may have been a problem as I found it a bit repetitive at times. Still a recommended read.

Chrissy and his grandfather, Lord Edgington, are continuing their travels in Europe. They have spent the last three months in Rome but it is time to move on. The are taking the train to Verona, home of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. This time Lord Edgington is bringing Todd, his chauffeur along to have adequate staff at his disposal. They will travel all night and expect to sleep through most of the trip. But shortly after they depart there is a scream--one of the stewards has found a dead body. The famous actress, Geraldine de la Forge, has been murdered. The famous detective, Lord Edgington, has only five hours to find the killer. They won't be getting much sleep on this trip.

I really like these stories. They started with the first series, Lord Edgington Investigates, where Chrissy was just a boy at boarding school and now he is a young man. It was Lord Edgington's plan to train him to be a detective and he has really grown in maturity as well as skill as the series has progressed. The current series, called Lord Edgington Investigates Abroad, involves their travels on the Continent and this is the second book in that one. They are stand alone novels so you don't need to read them in order, but Chrissy grows a little in each one and that is fun to follow. One of my favorite things is there is very subtle humour that adds to the fun of the investigation. I would recommend these books to anyone who likes period mysteries with gentle humour and a loving grandfather teaching his grandson about catching criminals. Oh, I should add, there is always a twist at the end. I have given up trying to guess the killer and have learned to just enjoy the ride.

Lord Edgington and Christopher are traveling from Rome to Verona, Italy on an overnight train. The departure was delayed while waiting for Geraldine de la Forge, a famous actress. It seems that almost everybody in first class is familiar with her, but not necessarily on good terms. Lord Edgington and Christopher go to the dining car, followed by some of the first class passengers, but Geraldine de la Forge is not among them. A short time later, Geraldine de la Forge is found dead. Lord Edgington makes it a point to speak with each of the first class passengers individually in an effort to determine who killed Geraldine. Among the suspects is a former boyfriend, her former director, and an ambitious fan. Each of the various suspects had an issue with Geraldine, but were they sufficient enough to warrant murder?

Who killed Geraldine? Why was she killed? Can Lord Edgington and Christopher solve the mystery before they reach their first stop? With realistic characters and situations, this mystery is guaranteed to keep readers engaged clear to the end.

Another Well Plotted Mystery

Night Train to Verona is another solid entry in Benedict Brown’s delightful series. Packed with red herrings, hidden motives, and revelations right up to the very end, it’s a clever and satisfying mystery that keeps you turning pages.

What makes it work isn’t just the puzzle—it’s the cast. Brown populates this tale with an intriguing mix of characters you have every reason to dislike, yet somehow their flaws add color rather than drag the story down. Perhaps that’s because by this point, we know and love the regulars who anchor the series with warmth, wit, and charm. Their presence provides a moral and emotional ballast amid the deceit and drama.

In short, Night Train to Verona delivers exactly what fans have come to expect from Benedict Brown: a deft blend of humor, humanity, and mystery—proof that this series still has plenty of steam left in its engine.

Death on the Night Train

Spoiler free.
As usual I read through this latest Lord Edgington mystery in one sitting it is that engrossing.
Here is a confession I solved the murder successfully before it even occurred when we were introduced to many of the players in the waiting room. I surmised motive, means and opportunity.
However my enjoyment of the story was in no way diminished. There is a wonderful red herring that will keep the reader wondering. Just who is ?????, after all a good number of the characters are in the business of make believe.
Benedict Brown set himself quite the challenge in using such a closed set as a moving train and in my opinion acquitted himself extremely well.
Now I just have to wait for either the next in this series or the next in the Marius Quinn series.

I predicted everything from the beginning LOL. But at this point, I actually love a novel when the author does exactly what I want them to in terms of the culprit and the motive.

I’m Loving This!

I discovered the Lord Edgington Investigates series and was absolutely charmed by the former Metropolitan Police officer, and don’t forget Chrissy, his young, (innocent) grandson! I’ve read them all, and the author always keeps it fun, a bit silly, yet the characters never fail to figure out the baddies! Personally, I really loved this particular book. I thought the story was pretty relevant for today’s world. Two of the characters (did they do it?? Together?? Is the husband hiding something about his wife??) are from my (current) hometown, Savannah, Georgia USA. No spoilers here… but the Detectives are following the clues!!

I love "closed room" mysteries, and this one (as the title says) takes place on a moving train! Mysterious people pop up as Christopher and Lord E. poke and stumble through alibis and clues (and educated guesses) to solve the murder of a popular actress who is travelling on the train. An Italian aristocrat, a salesman, a director and more must be interviewed and accounted for. Of course Lord Edgington's staff provides support and sometimes amusement as well. Lots of twists and surprises, including the ending!- I received an advance copy and freely leave this honest review.

Benedict Brown Has Done it Again

Death on the Midnight Train to Verona is superb. It seems that Chrissy has grown up and he and his grandfather Lord Edgington work on this case of suspected -murder more as partners than before. The story moves quickly. The suspects are unsavory. And there is much action. The entire scenario elicits pity, disgust, and other conflicting emotions. The piece de resistance is the surprising determination of “who done it, how and why”. This is an unforgettable book.

Written in the style of the Classic 1920-1940-s mysteries, this is very enjoyable read. Told in the first person by the grandson of a famous British detective, it takes place, like the title says, on the night train to Verona. Shades of "The Orient Express". But, while the beginning of the plot may sound familiar, the story is different. The characters are well-defined, and there's humor that pops up now and then. A good read. This is the 2nd of the series, I haven't yet read the first, and the next one hasn't been released yet. But soon.

Brilliant masterpiece of writing!
Again Benedict Brown delights the reader with a mystery that has substance and cleverness! All the hallmarks of classic mysteries are woven through the pages! Not a dull moment ~ action and drama! Multiple clues, multiple culprits ~ no shortage of red herrings either! I enjoyed that Lord Edgington had his total staff with him and included them in the mystery. He values them, is developing them, and it shows in this mystery! Chrissy brings newly minted qualities as well as his distinct sense of humour. Absolutely loved this latest adventure!

Great mystery!

Another wonderful mystery by Benedict Brown! A murder mystery on a train seems like it would be a worn out setting, but the characters, fast pace, and incredible twists make this book stand out above the rest. I loved the ending and can hardly wait for the next book to come out. Well done!

Superb mystery entry in this series

Loved this entry in the Lord Edgington series. Presented with the murder of a famous actress on the night train to Verona, Italy, Lord Edgington and his grandson, Christopher have a limited time in which the solve the case. With numerous suspects, they are hard pressed to find the culprit or culprits. Great ending!

Excellent!

I love watching Chissie grow up. The synergy between grandfather and grandson is slowly becoming more evident. Lord Edgerton is also showing miniscule signs of age, but he still has a good run ahead of him. Both men show Benedict's observations of changes in normal human aging at different points in life. Well done.

I really enjoyed this mystery set on a train to Verona. We have our regular cast of characters including Lord Edgington and his grandson, Christopher, as well as Todd, Doris and a number of the staff. Then we have all our suspects and a tight timeline for Lord Edgington and Christopher to solve the mystery. I loved the ending, kudos to the author on that, very clever!

They keep coming!

The Lord Edgington series just keeps coming. The characters are fun and funny. They are consistently well written with unique plots that keep you guessing. Chrissy is a great if self deprecating storyteller. The mysteries are always first rate but the humor is what makes this series distinctive. Keep them coming please!

Our dear Lord and Chrissy are wrapped in a dazzling and brilliant novel that is witty and humorous throughout. Also there is a clever reference to a excellent Agatha Christie novel. Thrilling in every way. All aboard for a rip roaring trip. Highly Recommended.

Great addition to the series!

I am rarely surprised at the ended of a cozy mystery, but this series has stumped me almost every time - and this one had the best twist of them all! Seriously, this author just keeps getting better and better. Highly recommended!

Just for fun

Grandfather and Christopher unravel a mystery on the way to Verona. It is a fair play mystery, and even though I guessed the very end, the story held my attention. There are some nonsensical bits, for comic relief. Highly recommended.

Amazing plot!

Benedict Brown never fails to deliver intriguing, cliffhanger plots that keep you guessing until the last page! Even when you think the mystery is solved—it isn’t because he has a trump card yet to play! A must read as all the Lord Edgington books are.

Another good story but not one of my favorites. There was a lot of talking but not a lot of action can take place when the whole thing takes place on a train. Nice twist at the end.
