Croft and Tabby: The Complete Collection

What’s worse than being a broke wizard? Having a gluttonous fiend for a pet.

When scholar and spell-caster Professor Croft trapped a succubus in a kitten’s body, he believed he was being merciful. His reward two years on? A morbidly obese cat with a lethal attitude.

When Tabitha isn’t busy lounging, gorging on delicacies, or honing her insults, she’s devising ways to devour his well-meaning soul.

But as supernatural mysteries pop up in the city—from a haunting on Roosevelt Island to a monster lurking in a child’s closet in Brooklyn—Prof Croft dares to consider that Tabitha’s unique makeup might actually be an asset.

Can he convince his ginger adversary to shelve their differences long enough to solve cases and save innocent lives? Or will Tabitha insist she has better things to do?

Like shredding his favorite reading chair.

Set before the main books in the Prof Croft series, this complete collection of mini-adventures can be enjoyed on its own. If you like snarky cats, fledgling mages, and supernatural investigations, you're sure to love Croft & Tabby!

Brad Magnarella writes urban fantasy for the same reason most read it – to explore worlds where magic crackles from fingertips, vampires and shifters walk city streets, cats talk (some excessively), and good prevails against all odds. It’s shamelessly fun.

His three main series, Prof Croft, Blue Wolf, and Maddy Deeds, make up the growing Croftverse, with nearly a half-million books sold to date and an Independent Audiobook Award nomination.

Hopelessly nomadic, Brad can be found in a rented room overseas or hiking America's backcountry.

A decent urban fantasy, kind of Dresden Files lite. Like Harry Dresden, Everson Croft is a youngish straight white wizard living in an apartment in a major US city with his large cat, and having to be careful around technology (I'm not sure how he's able to teach at a university without using a computer). However, the cat is possessed by a succubus and talks, so that's different.

Along with his friend Kayla, who's a somewhat flaky intuitive and puts him onto most of the cases, he sets out to do good and suppress dangerous supernatural entities. He fairly often gets hold of the wrong end of quite a dangerous stick, leading to danger and tribulation, but always wins through in the end, by a combination of a narrow set of magical abilities, courage, goodwill and the help of allies, sometimes including the snarky Tabitha (the possessed talking cat).

It's solid rather than amazing, but for the most part decently edited, except that it consistently uses "may" instead of "might" in past tense narration, occasionally misses a past perfect where one should ideally be, and confuses "leach" and "leech" (easy to do).

Not my new favourite or anything, but it's competently done and entertaining, and I'd read more in the series.

Croft and Tabby: The Complete Collection is an entertaining and highly readable urban fantasy series that leans hard into fun without sacrificing character or momentum. Brad Magnarella delivers a fast-moving story full of supernatural chaos, sharp dialogue, and a central duo that’s genuinely enjoyable to spend time with.

Croft is a likeable, capable protagonist without drifting into invincible wish-fulfilment, and Tabby is an excellent counterbalance, being smart, grounded, and integral rather than decorative. Their dynamic is one of the strongest aspects of the series, giving the books warmth and humour alongside the action and magic. The banter never overstays its welcome, and the emotional beats feel earned rather than forced.

The worldbuilding is familiar enough for fans of urban fantasy to slide straight in, but it’s handled with confidence and clarity. Supernatural elements are woven smoothly into the story, and the pacing keeps things moving without becoming exhausting. Each installment contributes to a larger arc while still being satisfying on its own, which makes the complete collection especially binge-friendly.

Overall, this is a fun, character-driven urban fantasy series that knows exactly what it wants to be and executes it well. If you’re looking for an engaging read with good chemistry, solid plotting, and a sense of enjoyment that carries through the entire collection, Croft and Tabby is an easy recommendation.

A wonderful collection of enjoyable romps from Croft’s early days with Tabitha. All featuring the kooky Kayla, these stories are fast-paced, funny and provide great insight into the history of Croft and Tabby’s relationship.

I love the dynamic between Croft and his reluctant assistant, the succubus-trapped-in-a-cat’s-body Tabitha. With the perfect blend of humour, snark, mystery, and danger, this collection is not to be missed.

The Prof Croft books form one of my favourite series, and I can’t recommend them enough.

Entertaining collection of all five Croft and Tabby stories showcasing the unusual relationship between the good professor and his erstwhile feline companion as Tabitha reluctantly helps in investigating an assortment of unusual cases requiring the professors unique set of skills.

Decent urban fantasy, some parts of the 5 novellas are quite good while others drag a bit. Not much character building, a shame because the bones are good, need more build on.
