Can a pair of opposites come together to heal from past wounds, lay their secrets bare, and pave the way for a future full of laughter and love? Or is this Cinderella story destined for an unhappily ever after?
TJ Wilson, the outgoing star running back for the Green Bay River Foxes, swears he’ll never fall in love again…not after losing his college girlfriend. He’s content with a life of football and carefree dating. Nothing serious. No strings. No matter how much his teammates rib him for it. When a stunning, secretive woman all but begs him to show her a good time at his team’s charity ball, he’s the man for the job. If the shoe fits, after all.
One heart-to-heart and an almost-kiss later, TJ finds himself enamored with the bashful but brazen mystery Cinderella, and, against his better judgement, longing for more than the one night she’s offered him.
One night. Lucy Dupree, a secret author and media personality-turned-social pariah, promises her literary agent she’ll come out of hiding for one night. Just long enough to get inspired, overcome her writer’s block, and finish her manuscript by the deadline. With the help of her fairy-godmother landlord and a vintage wedding gown, Lucy attends the Green Bay River Foxes Gala where she meets TJ, a walking, talking prince charming.
The masquerade theme allows Lucy to conceal her identity, and TJ provides her with enough content to write ten romance novels. A win-win. She got what she came for, and that’s enough. It has to be. Because when the clock strikes midnight, the fairytale ends. Or is it just beginning?
First Down and Forever To Go is a soft and sweet closed door romance with kissing only and no implied intimacy, perfect for fans of the opposites attract and friends to more tropes. This is the first book in the River Foxes Football Romance series. All titles can be read as standalones.

Thank you so so much to Leah for the ARC copy of this wonderful book💕
This was such a cute, innocent story between Lucy and TJ. I loved the writer elements and the sports talk (because of course Wisconsin is known for their football). Also, TJ’s grandparents were absolutely the sweetest married couple ever.
First Down and Forever to Go was so Cinderella coded, down to the football dances Poe and TJ would do together. Talk about adorable!
A pro footballer and semi disgraced social media star fall in love. Cinderella vibes, secret identity, backyard chickens and so much sweetness. I think I was smiling almost the entire time I read this book. I can’t wait for the next one!
This book! Maybe my new favorite Leah Dobrinska book?? I loved the main characters' instant connection and attraction. I loved their chemistry! Football romance, texting conversations, backyard chickens 🐔, the MMC is a dream guy 😍teddy bear and such a gentleman. I found myself smiling a lot while reading this book and giggling at times. So well written!
Leah knocks it out of the park again in this new series kickoff book, First Down and Forever to Go! (Oh no, I’m mixing sports metaphors!! So sorry lol)
This book was so tender and sweet, and told the story of TJ, one of Anton’s teammates from Exs Don’t. He is headed to a charity masquerade ball where he meets a mysterious woman who captures his attention in the best way. They share a few private moments, and promise it’s just for that night. But he is captivated and is determined to find her!
I honestly love a good Cinderella story, and Leah did an incredible job weaving a few Cinderella threads while also keeping the story original and believable an NOT cheesy at all. The journey TJ and Lucy take was therapeutic to read. They face their pasts with bravery, and I loved how they make space for each other to process and move forward. I can’t say enough good things about it!!
Thank you Leah for the ARC! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Y'all this book is so cute! I loved TJ so much. Part of me was worried when I found out our FMC had never been kissed because I was not sure how Leah was going to avoid it feeling too juvenile, but surprisingly, it was executed very well.
This is also a loose retelling of Cinderella and the book starts with an adorable Cinderella at the ball scene--but what I loved most about this retelling is that her step mom, Ruby, was not evil. Cinderella stories are always so hard to read because there's just so much dumped on our MC, but that was not the case here.
Lucy had many layers to discover and I loved how willing TJ was to continue peeling back the layers to learn all he could about her. At times Lucy felt a little dramatic, but it didn't really take away from my enjoyment of the story.
Something I do have a hard time with in stories is when the characters say things like "this only happens in books" or things of that nature because, in a way, I feel like it breaks the fourth wall because -- hey -- this is a book. I'm not sure how a writer would work around that though, especially since one of the characters was an author.
Aside from that, all of the characters were so likeable. TJ is like a teddy bear who is cocky, but not in a crappy way--it comes off very endearing--and his grandparents!!! Ahh they are the best. Plus there are backyard chickens. <3
There are so many little details I could pick out of the story that all made the book feel delightful to journey through. Also...we're also teased in the bonus epilogue for the next book and it sounds like it's going to be SO FUN!
I love being on Leah's ARC team--it's such a treat getting early access and being able to tell others to GO READ THIS BOOK ASAP!!! FOR REAL.
Absolutely loved this book! The Cinderella vibes were perfect!
TJ and Lucy are characters you’re going to fall in love with immediately. After an amazing conversation on the catwalk of the River Foxes Holiday Gala (masquerade), TJ and Lucy find they have an incredible connection but they promised to have only the one night because neither is looking for a relationship. Mix in TJ is a famous football player while Lucy is hiding from the media spotlight. Finding Cinderella leads to some funny interactions for TJ but finding Lucy again is worth it. Their friendship and relationship developing was so sweet and heartfelt.
Favorite parts: -the chickens. -the masquerade. TJ and Lucy’s hiding on the catwalk. -“It’s like the peach emoji in real life.” -Lucy and TJ’s friends and how supportive they were. -Cinderella slipper touchdown celebration -the Christmas tree search and decorating. -the book signing at Mood Reader for Philomena Grace -how Lucy surprised TJ over and over again. -along with the many funny one liners from all the characters throughout the book.
Favorite Quotes: “You looked good.” “Past tense?” I grab for my heart, pretending she wounded me. “What about now?” “Now you look like someone who’s fishing for a compliment.”
“You’re meaningful to me, Lucy. I want to be clear when I say that. I’ve developed feelings for you.” He chuckles at my wide eyes. “Don’t look so surprised. You’re extraordinary.”
4.5 stars Ah! This was just so cute and sweet! I adored this story and read it so quickly! First Down and Forever is the first book in Leah Dobrinska’s new series, River Foxes Football Romance. I was so excited for the start of this new series and it did not disappoint. First of all, I loved both of the characters. They felt real and I wanted them to be my friends. TJ and Lucy were both working through different hurts and trying to figure out life. I love how they healed each other heal by just being good friends. The romance was fitting for them, they both fell fast but were scared of how the other might react. The progression of their relationship felt perfect and I like how they became friends first. They got to know each other. The story was engaging and I was rooting for them as they faced the obstacles that stood in their way. They were both public figures in different ways but they could be real with each other. Both TJ and Lucy had to grow throughout the book as they learned to face their fears and step out in faith. This was a wonderful book and I would totally recommend it! I loved the hints of Cinderella that this story had but it also felt like its own book. The side characters were a lot of fun and I am hoping that the rest of the football team gets their own books. I loved seeing old characters too. First Down and Forever to Go is a closed door contemporary romance.
** A huge thank you to the author, Leah Dobrinska, for the opportunity to read this ARC in return for an honest review! **
Leah never disappoints when it comes to each of her phenomenal books. We had gotten a taste of TJ and the other River Foxes teammates from Rose and Anton's cozy romance, Exes Don't. If you're like me, you craved and desperately wanted to know Anton's teammates better and see how their romantic relationships emerge and develop. Reading TJ and Lucy's relationship was such a treat.
Lucy, a "disgraced" celebrity, needs inspiration to get past her writer's block and finally make progress on her next romance. No one knows that she is the infamous and mysterious author named Ava Reese. Thanks to a fundraiser hosted by the Green Bay River Foxes, a Cinderella story gives Lucy just what she needs and more. Enter TJ, a man who sidelined the idea of love and didn't want to consider a serious relationship with after losing someone special. Dobrinska handles close losses so sympathetically and with ease, bringing her two main characters together with a special bond and with the blessings of healing and transformation.
Without giving too much away, you'll definitely want to pick up this Cinderella inspired story and continue loving the Green Bay River Foxes, and finding the person you want to spend your forever with.
And one last thing, I can't wait for the next River Foxes book to come out! That bonus epilogue!! 💜
“You’ve been filling your head with the words of people who are all too happy to tear you down. I’m about to change the narrative. Beprepared to hear me compliment you. Be prepared to accept my compliments. You’d better start believing them."
First Down and Forever To Go is pure sweetness. It doesn't shy away from hard topics in the characters pasts, but moves through the story with integrity in order to give the reader something to root for (and not just their favorite football team). But there is a rather sweet and adorable football player, TJ, who might just be in the running for your new favorite MMC. He is a little adrift after significant loss, but when this guy opens his heart to love again.... oh man, game on!
I can't forget to tell you about his object of interest, Lucy, from a famous family but has her own fall from grace and is lying low after a public meltdown. She is struggling a bit as an author and TJ is her new muse. They strike up a really lovely friendship. TJ getting excited over her writing process when inspiration strikes like a kid in a candy shop might be one of my favorite moments in the story. These two are so supportive of one another that their path to more feels like a really great transition and we just get the pleasure of observing it.
If you are looking for a fun, cozy read to cap off your football (or any!) season, this one is a winner!
I received an early copy for consideration. All thoughts contained here are my own.
I’ve read all of Leah’s books and this is definitely one of my favorites.
1. I love books based on fairy tales. This one plays into Cinderella. I liked that the mystery didn’t drag out or lead to a bunch of miscommunication, etc. It was just a fun meet cute for the characters.
2. There’s no 3rd act break up. I generally hate 3rd act break ups because they’re so often forced or for some really dumb reason. There were multiple points where the story hit points that could have led to a break up, but the characters just… talked through it. Like adults! Refreshing.
3. That said, everything is not all sunshine and rainbows. The book hits on some serious topics, and they’re handled so well. It was respectful, but didn’t overshadow that this is, ultimately, a romance. I also really liked commentary on the value of entertainment and the following of celebrities.
4. I’m a born and raised Packers fan. The River Foxes had so many references to the Packers that I loved so much.
5. TJ is the cutest.
I finished this book in one day. It just gave me all the Happy and cozy vibes that was perfect to curl up with a blanket and enjoy. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a sweet, funny, closed door romance!
Thank you to the author for an ARC of this book ❤️
A football romance with Cinderella vibes!? Yes, please! Simply put, I was completely obsessed with this one right from the start! Honestly, it would be pretty hard not to fall in love with TJ and Lucy. On the surface, we have a somewhat cocky football star and a disgraced celebrity in hiding, but I loved how much depth each of these characters had... they both had heartbreaks and loss in their past, and I loved that sense of healing that their story brought. Those more emotional and tender moments were balanced perfectly with the humor and fun... and some pretty amazing chemistry too! My goodness! Truly, there was just something about these two together that I couldn't help but love. I wouldn't say that their story was a true fairy tale retelling, but their Cinderella-inspired meet cute was the sweetest and definitely made this Cinderella fan smile! And the River Foxes? This team already feels like family, and I find myself looking forward to seeing more from them in this series. I cannot wait to see what's going to happen next. If you love football romance and secret identities, this is one you won't want to miss!
First Down and Forever to Go is a closed-door romance with kisses only and no language.
I loved this book! TJ and Lucy’s story is such a delight to read. You’ll belly-laugh and swoon your way through.
Leah Dobrinska brings us back to the pro-football team River Foxes from “Exes Don’t”. This time, we focus on running back TJ, who falls for a special woman who refuses to identify herself at a masquerade charity. Lucy, reality TV star and secret author, wants just one night to let loose and have fun without other people remembering her viral outburst at an awards show. Despite the deal for “just one night”, their attraction is undeniable.
What I liked: - The dialogue was great. Hilarious one minute, swoony the next. - Cute but meddling grandmother - Cinderella-esque, but with a supportive stepmother/step sisters. So different, but it felt real - Chickens! - Space for healing and grief for both TJ (allowing oneself to move on and live life after loved one’s death) and Lucy (living life after past mistakes)
“ TJ Wilson, the outgoing star running back for the Green Bay River Foxes, swears he’ll never fall in love again…not after losing his college girlfriend. He’s content with a life of football and carefree dating. Nothing serious. No strings. No matter how much his teammates rib him for it. When a stunning, secretive woman all but begs him to show her a good time at his team’s charity ball, he’s the man for the job. If the shoe fits, after all.”
I have to say I have read a few of Leah’s books and this has to be one of my favorites. I loved the romance and the fact that she is a writer. I really enjoyed the book just overall. I love how her other series are tied into this one that was so fun to see come up. I can’t wait for the next one. I would highly recommend this author and this book especially of hers.
No notes. Literally none. This book was so sweet & adorable & perfect.
TJ & Lucy are just two adorable cinnamon rolls and they are perfect together. The confidence that TJ has was so good. He was cocky but in the best way and you could tell he was genuine. Lucy is just the biggest sweetheart and you just want to hug her. The way I could relate to her & her rambling though. 😂😂
These two though. The way the showed up for one another was amazing! They helped one another heal, and it was beautiful to see.
Also. The comedic timing in this book was top tier good. I laugh at books but this one had my laughing OUT LOUD multiple times. It was chefs kiss good
The TEAM. Yes please. They are fantastic & I cannot wait to see more of them in the next book.
Side note — my love for Rose & Anton from exes don’t runs deep so seeing SO MUCH of them in this made my heart so happy.
This was such a cute, sweet read. We got the story from one of Anton’s teammates in Exes Don’t. I loved that story so getting to see more from that world is just a bonus to this story I didn’t know I needed.
TJ and Lucy meet at a masquerade ball. It’s very Cinderella/A Cinderella Story reminiscent. I wouldn’t say it’s a cinderella retelling at all. Like the story reminded me of it without seeming like a straight copy/paste.
There are so many parts of the story that I just absolutely loved. The character development for Lucy & TJ was so good. I’m so excited for more of this series and more from Leah! I don’t know exactly how to explain it, but her books are just so easy for me to read & I know that no matter what kind of mood I’m in, when I start one of her books I get sucked into it & can’t put it down!
I cannot even with how adorable this story is. I loved it so much, I did the thing where I read the first 80% in a weekend and then made the last 20% stretch a week and a half because I didn't want it to end. I just adore everything about TJ and Lucy, and I needed to stay in their world for as long as I could.
Lucy was already living a secret life under an author pen name, then after a very public faux pas, she hid away entirely in small town Wisconsin. She's boxed herself in as a shy, sweet, introverted girl, but then she happens upon TJ, this flirty, cocky, fun-loving sweatheart who brings out her bold and sassy side. They're both so similar and yet so different. She's a best-selling romance author who's never been kissed, he's a playboy who's avoiding real love at all cost, and they are both such softies. They both help each other grow and heal, and move forward in life. They are just perfection together, I was squealing with giddiness through the entire book.
I also loved all the side characters. Lucy's writing girl friends were the best, and obviously I enjoyed getting more of the River Foxes (and I am so excited for the rest of the series!). TJ's grandparents are so fun and adorable. And I really appreciated that it was a twist on Cinderella and Lucy's stepmom and stepsisters were kind and supportive.
Thank you so much, Leah, for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. I simply loved this story and cannot wait for Poe's and Del's stories!
First Down and Forever To Go is a sweet, cozy, football romance. TJ and Lucy aren’t looking for romance. TJ is looking for a good time, while Lucy is looking for inspiration. They meet at a masquerade ball and find that they have an instant spark. They each have personal issues they are working through. They build a friendship that soon turns to more.
I enjoyed reading about TJ and Lucy, their friend groups, and the life of a romance author. Thank you to the author for the arc, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Watching Lucy grow and continuously be brave and so kind and supportive was so encouraging. We've all had embarrassing moments (although likely not on national TV) and it was great to see her learn how to move past that and allow TJ in. And TJ! What a love! So supportive and gracious and uplifting. They both helped each other with their respective losses so beautifully. Loved this closed door romance, (hot but not spicy), and the faith elements that weren't in your face or preachy, but perfectly tucked into the story.
This was such an amazing book 💖 Be ready to have all the emotions while reading this book! The characters are so wonderfully in touch with their emotions and they are all absolutely amazing! Love TJ’s grandparent’s so much! There are so many swoon worthy moments, you’ll be melted into a puddle by the end😍 Also Lucy’s friend group is absolutely amazing💖 I loved the bonus epilogue for the set up of the next book in the series…I am so excited for it😍
I have been impatiently waiting for this book since it was announced, and it did not disappoint!
Things I loved about it:
Sports romance 🏈
Cinderella story
His grandparents are adorable 🥹
He has backyard chickens 🐔
They have amazing chemistry
The flirting 💕
TJ is so caring and loving to Lucy. Possibly the best book boyfriend I could dream of having.
I highly recommend reading this book and anything from this author. It is a new favorite of mine from Leah and I can't wait for the rest of the series!
First Down & Forever to Go by Leah Dobrinska ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
TJ & Lucy are so cute together! I loved the modern Cinderella take but with a twist - a supportive step mom and sisters. Plus TJs grandparents are actually my favorite. I want to be them when my husband and I are older.
This was really sweet and well written. Leah is an auto read author for me and this story is just another 'touchdown' story for me.
🩶Football Romance 🩶Dual POV 🩶Kisses Only 🩶Chickens 🩶Cinderella Meet Cute
Neither Lucy nor TJ were looking for a serious relationship, but maybe that's when the best ones happen. They have both know tragedy in their lives. They have parts of themselves they don't easily share, even though they have very public personas. It's a beautiful story of seeing and being seen for who you truly are. There's also love of family and friends and the courage to be vulnerable. Beautiful story and ending.
The perfect book for this weekend!!! I love Leah Dobrinska! She is an auto-buy author for me and she never disappoints!!! I loved this sweet, cozy, swoony, heart felt romance!!! Add in football and it’s an automatic yes!!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Oh how the mighty have fallen and they fall hard! In Leah Dobrinska new book, First Down and Forever To Go, TJ Wilson is the slightly cocky yet lovable football player who finds his Cinderella at the team's auction gala. His Cinderella, Lucy, has been quietly living in Cashmere Cove for the past 9 months, staying out of the public eye and working on her next novel. When they finally connect after the gala, they realize they're just what each other needs but will Lucy's past ruin their chance with each other?
This book was so adorable! The gala scene where TJ and Lucy first meet each other is beautiful and their friendship afterward is just perfect.
Things I enjoyed: 👗The catwalk (especially the return from it 🤣) 👗TJs touchdown dance 👗TJ grandparents 👗Seeing Anton and Rose again 👗Their first kiss 👗The end scene (gah, I love it and don't want to spoil it!)
TJ and Lucy's relationship is so tender and sweet. Even though it was instant attraction at the gala, they were very much friends throughout the book, which I thoroughly enjoy because they got to know each other and their quirks, their fears, and their secrets.
Side note: I also love that Leah's football players are inspired by actual football players. As I was reading, I kept trying to figure out who was the inspiration for TJ. I'm horrible at guessing, so I was glad when she revealed it was Christian McCaffery. I was like "Ah ha! Now I see it!" I've followed him since his college days and my husband calls him the "human cheat code" of football. It's a perfect connection to TJ. ☺️
What a wonderful start to the series. The book is absolutely well written and the characters were adorable.
I really liked the drama in the beginning of the book which highlighted how much fun Lucy and TJ actually are. And I loved the organic growth, the friendship and the honest conversations they had with each other.
If you need a supportive, kind, fun, football playing Prince Charming and a secret novelist, then this book is for you!
This is such a fun twist on a Cinderella story and I absolutely love TJ and Lucy. I love how confident they each were in different areas and their masquerade meet cute and then unmasked meet cute…swoon.
“I’m all for a strong female protagonist, but there’s no rule that says you can’t be strong and have a strong desire to be held.”
He plays football and she secretly writes romance novels. He’s in the spotlight and she is hiding from it. If you want a magical moment, this book has so many! I felt all the feelings as TJ slowly breaks down Lucy’s walls and shows her that she is worth knowing and caring for. His grandparents were a delight and my heart could not get over their relationship with TJ.
“But you deserve your first kiss to be with a man who knows you. A man who'll savor the moment and take his time and treat you to the tender sort of embrace you deserve. Don't settle for anything less.”
Loved loved loved this book! I did not want to stop reading.
Masquerade ball meet-cute you stole my heart. TJ and Lucy are perfection from the start. I loved the progression of their relationship. Building trust and friendship. Easing into sharing their hurts and fears and secrets.
TJ’s support and love for Lucy made me absolutely giddy. How he helps drown out the noise of negativity and shows her, in words and actions, that she is strong and worthy.
“You’ve been filling your head with the words of people who are all too happy to tear you down. I’m about to change the narrative. Be prepared to hear me compliment you. Be prepared to accept my compliments. You’d better start believing them. Because you, Lucy Dupree, are a gem. Don’t you dare let anyone, least of all yourself, dull your shine.”
Cinderella is my favorite Disney fairytale and I loved all the nods sprinkled throughout, but I especially loved the relationship between Lucy and her step-mother.
This is another one to add to my favorites.
Thank you to Leah Dobrinska for the copy. All opinions are my own.
