Bad Boy Dragon Next Door

Rate this book
How the hell did I end up with my one-night stand, dragon-shifting enemy-next-door?

Draven Vaughn is trouble wrapped in leather and smoke — who happens to shift into a dragon.

One reckless night, I fell into his bed, only to wake up alone.

Now, he's my infuriating neighbor in Avalora Springs, frustratingly mysterious, and dangerously powerful.

Quiet acts of kindness, from silently repairing my leaking faucet to patrolling the perimeter in dragon form at night, flips my world upside down.

Late-night talks on his porch slowly replace arguments, his laughter makes my heart ache for something real.

A stolen kiss under the moonlit sky, filled with whispered apologies and tender touches, shatters my resolve entirely.

But just as I’m ready to risk my heart completely, the enemy strikes hard, kidnapping me to use our unborn child for twisted experiments—and Draven is the only hope we have left.

I wanted to like it, but there was so much wrong. Plot holes, inconsistencies, references to major things that seem to suddenly no longer exist. Multiple times when reading things were referenced that made me think I missed a chapter, but nope just another off thing. At various points the FMC knew nothing about dragons, knew everything before meeting MMC, was a dormant dragon, or was a witch - none of these things at the same time, and none consistent through the story. The story had potential, but failed to deliver.

Potentially offensive items: nudity, adult situations, premarital sex, sexually explicit, technical rape, offensive language/profuse swearing, drug/alcohol, gangs, violence, violence against women, mature themes, lying, supernatural powers

The sample is probably the best part of this steamy romance built around dragon shifters, but I didn’t like even that because the main character has a one-night stand while drunk, and both male and female are okay with that. It is never okay to have sex with someone who is drunk in my book. Had the male felt any guilt about it, it would have at least addressed what I see as a serious issue in today’s society.

Most of this book reads like someone’s hastily taken notes. It feels like the book was jotted down and never got a second read or any revisions because there is so much missing from it. The reader is left to connect a lot of dots, and compounding the confusion is that sometimes the time shifts forward and back without warning. Because it reads like a bunch of notes (and the dialogue reads like a bunch of disconnected one-liners), there is not much in the way of character-building or romance-building.

Finally, the sex scene is described in such crass language that I hesitate to call this “steamy,” which, on my labeling scale, tends to have milder language. However, there is not enough sex for me to give it a “spicy” label, and it seems like the sex scene was thrown in as an afterthought. All-in-all the book was very disappointing--not just because it was poorly written, but because the plot had so much potential that it never achieved. I got this book free through Goodreads.

This novella is in dire need of editing. I'm glad I got it for free.

There were times when sentences just didn't make sense at all. There were punctuation errors.

The continuity was awful. In one chapter, the FMC suddenly knew the MMC was a dragon. Then in a later chapter he revealed himself to her. She just accepted that he was a dragon with no further discussion or concerns for what it might mean for their future.

Even the main characters were poorly developed. The supporting characters weren't developed at all. There was very little background story provided.

Spoilers:
The FMC's child was portrayed as being far too advanced for a 5 yo. unless the was a prodigy.

Towards the end of the story, the FMC suddenly had an inner dragon that had never come out. There was very little discussion of this. However, there was concern that it had to come out before her baby got much bigger, or the baby would kill her. If she had an inner dragon, why wasn't there a problem when she had her first child?

The storyline was barely developed with virtually no world building. The conflict used to add some tension to the story was with werewolves and witches but wasn't really explained. The town she moved to was supposed to be a refuge for special (magical?) people but that was never explained, nor was the town described.

I won't bother to read any more books by this author. There are too many wonderful books by talented authors I'd rather spend my time reading.

Ik had het gevoel dat er stukken van het verhaal niet in het boek zaten met de sprongen die er soms in het verhaal gemaakt werden. Hierdoor raakte ik de draad van het verhaal kwijt en kwam ik er niet zo in.

There are many inconsistencies, missing words and too many sentences that do not belong. It feels like someone tried to edit by deleting but never made needed changes.

great storyline, that feels like you've skipped a whole chapters and you have to piece it together some.

I loved this book, of course Draven was not bad to look at also, but I ADORED Mason the wiggly boy who loved dragons.

I found this story good, but some smaller parts are a bit boring to me. I would not mind to read the next one. The only problem is that it feels as if you have missed pages.
