The Black Death. The Bubonic Plague. Originating in China in 1334, it traveled the silk trade routes from Asia, reaching Europe in 1347, where it spread across the continent in the worst pandemic in recorded history. By some estimates, it claimed the lives of two hundred million people, nearly half the world's population. Today, there are over seven billion humans on the planet. It no longer takes years for disease to spread by caravan across the deserts. It travels by car, by train, and by plane. An outbreak of Ebola that started in the West African country of Guinea grabbed the world's attention when it spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Senegal. In eight months, the virus infected over 8,000 people. Over 4,000 died. It was the worst Ebola outbreak in history, the first true epidemic of the virus since its discovery in 1976. The Director of the CDC said it would only get worse before it got better. Then it did. They called it the Blacker Death.
***The Blacker Death is a comprehensive, entertaining, and frightening thriller***
The Story THE BLACKER DEATH revolves around a modern-day plague, previously known in the Middle Ages as the Bubonic plague or The Black Death. Mr. Enright notches up the stakes in his book. The Blacker Death is a deadlier strain. It’s an airborne virus, which essentially makes the very air we breathe a poison.
The irony is that the tools that have made our lives more accessible to each other—transportation and communication—are what will eventually help kill us. The world has become a small place, and a virus knows no global boundaries.
The Main Characters I’m a sucker for a leading man like FBI agent, Bam Matthews. I like my men in fiction weatherworn and beaten down by life. If they’ve been paying attention, it fills them with wisdom and understanding. Bam is that type of man. Though somewhat detached, he has a keen eye and an unwavering stubbornness to achieve justice. He’s quick on his feet and thinks for himself, but he’s no caricature. Think of him as a combination of Sam Spade, James Bond, and Columbo—with a swagger!
As for his lady love … Belgian Special Agent Izzy Aimee—they complement each other, and their chemistry and dialogue are delicious.
Overall thoughts I’ve always been more fearful of reality than fiction. The scariest stories for me don’t include zombies, vampires, or other monsters. Fear exists for me when it comes from what I already know, but where we have yet to be tested.
This book is well researched and involves all levels of government and law enforcement. There have been cases of Ebola, but not to the extent as outlined in this story. THE BLACKER DEATH may be fiction, but it has a powerful message on how we may react in the case of such a pandemic.
To quote a line from the book: “It was pretty clear the life-as-we-know-it train was coming to the end of the line.”
The Blacker Death is a multi-layered story that makes you question biological warfare in a whole new light. Bravo to author, Larry Enright, for such a comprehensive and entertaining read.
The Blacker Death: An Ebola Thriller was not a title I expected to be reading a couple of weeks before Christmas, but I’m very glad I did. That’s because I’ve yet to read a novel by Larry Enright that I didn’t like.
The jewel of this book is protagonist, Bam Matthews. He’s a flawed FBI agent who breaks the stereotype of the stiff automaton who follows every order to the letter. My father was a detective with the Pennsylvania State Police. Bam Matthews would have no problem fitting into Dad’s station house. Unlike so many fictional law enforcement people, Matthews travels a path between the laws of the land, the boss’s orders, and his own moral compass that has a very genuine feel. Placing him on scene at the outbreak of a pandemic gives us a chance to see this unique character in the most stressful situation imaginable. Don’t miss this terrific thriller.
I got this book back in 2017 and just now read it. It's a pandemic story written just prior to the real pandemic, haunting for sure! Now's the time to read this book. I had a little difficulty following the characters through the fast-paced plot, but it's one fantastic read. I couldn't put it down, a page-turner for sure. Characters are well developed and this story is full of twists and turns to keep one reading. The slightly wounded life of the protagonist, Bam is typical of thrillers and murder mysteries so readers in this genre should love him. A few aspects of the book seem slightly predictable, but then the adventure 'takes the road less traveled.' I don't want to spoil the story, but I will say it does show what could happen if a pandemic gets out of control. Considering how close the world just came to a planetary disaster, the timing of this book is chilling. I do highly recommend reading it!
Not my cup of tea!!! I'm not a detective story kind of gal. Atleats not this style. I like my Sherlock, Dresden and Robert Langdon style. This is a classic private dick style. With all the punny language. I ugh didnt like it. I picked it up because of the subject matter. the fact that plague and epidemics are absolutely terrifying. I wanted to be scared and dive into a world that was being infected by terrible epidemic with a detective trying to figure out where it came from. Instead I got a punny private dick that's named Bam..... Who seems to take himself to seriously. The mobster side story takes up most of the book then it gets to the epidemic in the last few chapters. And its just terrible.
This was a really good read. Scary and sad. Maybe a sequel later? Hope so would like to know the world survived and Agent Mathews too. Liked his character.
'The Blacker Death' completely blew me away. The storyline was one of those that made reality and the possibilities real. Full of intense situations, thrills, suspense and mystery. It had some twists that took me by surprise. Bam made the perfect lead. He's sarcastic, a very good agent and he's street smart. Plus, he's a self confessed ass-hole. I laughed out loud quite a bit. But then remembered the premise of this book and sobered up pretty quick. This is the first book I've read by Larry Enright and it won't be the last. A great add to your tbr list.
This book basically sums up revenge best served up cold in a very dramatic way.it's solid with some chuckling moments in the midst of a dark subject matter.I very much enjoyed the story. it is more mystery than catastrophe novel.but the combination of both was well worth my time reading this book.some loose ends that I really wish I could ask the author"whatever happened to..."enjoy
This book was absolutely amazing. It was also one of the scariest books I've ever read. I applaud author Larry Enright and his amazing imagination. I'm extremely glad that I was only reading about this and not living it. Five stars are not enough. Ten would be better.
Very good read about Ebola without being too gory. Many die, but we're left not knowing if the lead character makes it or not. This story really kept my attention as well keeping me guessing. Very up to date for 2015.
I am a big fan of the medical thriller genre and this book doesn't disappoint. Characters are unique not the typical doctor, this is an FBI agent which gives it a fun new spin. I would highly recommend.
The Blacker Death is the kind of page turner and psychologically profound story with unexpected twists and memorable characters I have come to expect and love from this author. I also enjoyed listening to the audio version of the book. Great fun and fascinating!
