Once I was a Nun: A memoir

Rate this book
"Brilliantly captivating, moving, remarkable story of a young woman's very personal journey to flying solo!"
Dr M Lincoln, Education Consultant.

For so long I did not speak of my former life except to those closest to me. I think some of my reticence came from a fear of people finding it confronting and taking a wide berth of me. But recently I had discovered letters my father had kept from those years. I had written home regularly and as I read them it got me thinking back over those times again.

I hadn’t even finished school when I entered the convent and the time I spent in the close-knit community, particularly of the Novitiate, had been special.

These days too, with very few nuns around, especially ones recognisable in their traditional black habits, I thought I’d share my life as a Catholic nun back in the day.

I hope my story is a glimpse into the life of a young girl from the far North Queensland tropics uprooting her life from living at home to living far away in a convent in Sydney at the end of the sixties.

I really enjoyed this beautifully written memoir.
The narrative reveals the life and times of a young woman at a convent in Sydney during the 1960s. There are highs and lows but most importantly the journey is captured for posterity.
