“For what I have sought to demonstrate is the way in which metaphysical themes of participation and theological themes of covenant structure and pervade Puritan theology” (pg. 73).
Burton sets out to do what he claims he wanted to do with this book. I was helped to see that the doctrine of participation is present in the Puritans, and it works in tandem with their covenant theology. If you’re looking for an introduction to participation, I wouldn’t recommend this book. He doesn’t really define participation. He more so assumes you already know what the doctrine is. I felt like that was a downside to an otherwise interesting study.
Oddly specific for the short length of the book. It gets very deep, very quickly. For those looking for that on this topic, this would be an excellent discussion starter for participation and covenant within ecclesiology.
