Stepping onto the icy sidewalk, she doesn’t see a soul around her. But as she nears the safety of her vehicle, she hears the sound of heavy footsteps. She barely has time to take a breath before a sack is thrown over her head, and her world goes dark…
It’s Christmas in Black Rock Falls, and as the snow falls, schoolteacher Ellie McBride races to the office of Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane. She says she escaped being kidnapped. Days later, when a deadly message is written on the whiteboard in Ellie’s classroom, it’s clear whoever took her still has her in his sights.
Jenna is determined to catch the person responsible, and as she watches footage of the attempted kidnapping, something doesn’t add up. Why is Ellie missing from the footage? Did the kidnapper cover his tracks, or is Ellie telling lies about what happened?
Days later, social worker Laney Prescott is reported missing. Worried that it could be the same person, Jenna rushes to Laney’s small home, but she’s already too late. Taking in Laney’s long dark hair, which hangs limp over her face, and the thick cord wrapped around her neck, Jenna fears that a twisted monster is stalking vulnerable women. She vows to hunt them down and bring them to justice.
But as heavy snow begins to block off roads and homes in the small town, the murderer uses the opportunity to take his next victim. A young nurse is missing, and as Jenna closes in on the killer, she finds herself in unthinkable danger thanks to the treacherous conditions. Can Jenna survive and catch the murderer, or will this be her last case?
Addictive, mysterious, thrilling, shocking, and tense! D.K. Hood has written another gripping addition to her pulse pounding, Detectives Kane and Alton Series!!!!!!! I am always thrilled and excited when I see there is another book in this riveting series coming out! Watch Over Me had me turning the pages and enjoying every second of it. I love Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane. Black Rock Falls is a dangerous place to be, but many call it home, sweet home. Kane and Alton do a fantastic job at solving cases, stopping serial killers, and keeping the community as safe as possible. I love them both individually but also love them as a couple with small children. I also love how D.K. Hood seamlessly blends their persona. romantic life into their professional lives in this series! Plus, the supporting characters are awesome as well.
In Watch Over Me, a sinister killer is stalking women, leaving them scary messages, and leaving bodies behind. Kane and Alton, along with their team, the FBI and even Raven's dog will be on the case to catch a killer!!!!
This book proved to be a fast paced, captivating, and thrilling read. I love D.K. Hood's vivid descriptions along with her wonderful writing. I enjoyed the atmosphere, the snowy winter setting, the tension, the dread, and the mounting danger! There were a few pulse pounding moments and a nice sized suspect pool. I tried my best to come up with whodunit, but D.K. Hood pulled the wool over my eyes! I love it when that happens. I enjoy a good shock with realistic reveal (not coming out of left field) in my books!
This is the 28th book in the series but will work nicely as a stand-alone novel. I began this series with the 22nd book in the series and have been a fan of the series ever since! I love the characters, their commitment to their jobs, the detective work, the relationships, the sense of found family, and community in this series.
Wonderfully written, well thought out, tense, shocking and hard to put down! I can't wait to see what comes next for Jenna and Kane!
**Another wonderful buddy read with Bec (becbingesbooks)! Please read her review of Watch Over Me to get her thoughts on the book!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
Stepping onto the icy sidewalk, she doesn't see a soul around her. But as she nears the safety of her vehicle, she hears the sound of heavy footsteps. She barely has time to take a breath before a sack is thrown over her head, abd her world goes black.
It's Christmas time in Black Rock Falls and the whole gang get together to solve a couple of cases and enjoy Christmas in Dave & Jenna's home. This multilayered story held my attention throughout. A young teacher is bashed over the head then put inches boot of their car, but she manages to escape and seeks the help of Sheriff Jenna Alton and her team. Then body is discovered, there are similarities to what had happened to the teacher. Before they know it, they are dealing with a serial killer. Jenny has to pull in all her resources to help her solve this case.

Would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture abd the author #DKHood for my ARC of #WatchOverMe in exchange dor an honest review.
I always enjoy adventures with Dave and Jenna. Can you believe that this is book 28 already!
Christmas Time in Black Rock Falls, never a dull moment. Heavy snow makes for picture postcard scenery but there is a darkness at large and the team have their hands full this festive season. All they want to do is relax after a big year, but with a killer on the loose and a drug distribution to break down, there will be no rest just yet.
I loved how the whole team, FBI and all the dogs are involved in these cases. A big team of people that care for and respect each other, working and celebrating together. The snow sounds so pretty, but we see the dangers behind the weather, ice to look at, tough to live and work in.
Thanks to Bookouture for once again allowing me to read this series early. Publishes on December 16th, just in time for Christmas 🎄
A twisty, mysterious instalment from D.K. Hood that I thoroughly enjoyed as usual! a great series to get into, whether from the start or book 20! Always a joy buddy reading D.K. Hood with Debra (thank you and be sure to check out her review!!) and looking forward to the next. Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and the author for my eARC in exchange for my honest review.
A great fan of D.K. Hood, I gladly reached for the latest novel in the Kane and Alton series. Hood targets her 28th story in the collection around an odd abduction. While Ellie McBride is out late one evening, she is taken and only just manages to escape. She reaches out to Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane with her story, though camera footage does not entirely support Ellie’s story. When an eerie message is left on the whiteboard in Ellie’s school classroom, the case takes on a new and terrifying narrative. As Sheriff Alton tries to find the person responsible, Ellie is missing from all footage and her handwriting matches messages left. Could Ellie be staging this herself? When a social worker is found murdered days later, Sheriff Alton attends the scene and evidence points to Ellie McBride. Now, things are even more troubling. A snowstorm paralyses Black Rock Falls, allowing a killer to strike again. A missing nurse, a tense town, and a sheriff who refuses to stand down. D.K. Hood delivers another gripping story!
I have long enjoyed the work of D.K. Hood and this series. The stories remain quick-paced and deliver an impactful read for those who enjoy these books. The narrative flows well as the reader stays hooked with each passing page. As the momentum finds traction, the reader may speculate about the most recent killer in Black Rock Falls and how the authorities will focus their investigation. Short chapters help create that tension and Hood has mastered the art of storytelling.
Characters provide great pathways to strengthen the story. Hood has a handful of recurring faces that keep things stabilised, while adding those new to the scene to flavour the larger story. There is some minor personal development for Jenna Alton and Dave Kane, but much is in the moment and related to the cases at hand. Hood had never struggled to keep the list of faces plentiful, each working their own influences on the story at hand.
Plot points keep the story from being too predictable, which adds something edgy and provides so much for the reader to enjoy. Surprises fuel this series well and ensures th reader is always wondering. There are key aspects of the series advancement and some crumbs to point in the direction of future story ideas. D.K. Hood has set a pathway for many stories to come, with little hint of hanging things up.
Kudos, Madam Hood, for yet another stellar piece in this strong series.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this awesome book
dk hood has done it again set us up in murder central with a killer on the loose just in time for christmas...
when ellie mcbride reported to jenna and her team that she had been kidnapped jenna had immediately sprung into action with her team and though they followed every protocol and looked everywhere the evidence just didnt seem to be there ... it looked very much as if she had done it for attention and though jenna wouldnt say anything to ellie until everything had been crossed off they kept her safe
could there be someone in town or was ellie just an attention seeker.... and with the snow storm things werent getting any easier to get around
soon after a welfare check is asked when laney prescott doesnt appear in work and jenna is called to the scene when they find her dead... but evidence points to ellie mcbride... whatever is going on.....
another great read from dk hood... and it was great to get everyone together i love jenna christmas traditions of inviting everyone around ... my question is wheres my invite...
I loved this book. I love Dave and Jenna and reading about their love story. It makes me so happy. And it is Christmas in Black Rock Falls so we're gonna hear about the whole gang.
That being said this was a zinger of a book y'all, and it kept me up reading it. You've got to read this one.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Now, to begin with, I only have to say this, I feel like it was over too quickly!! I felt no sooner than the book found its stride, it was over! I could sit and read about the team all day, so this is me being selfish ;)
And yet, it is another exciting instalment in this series!! I do fear for Ms Hood’s mind!! We have a chilling stalker leaving horrible notes, and these poor women are basically being stalked. Not quite sure how this is going to pan out, especially after the first victim, who is even under investigation as potentially doing it herself!! I did feel it was a little rushed when we found the murderer. I also felt a tough spot for one of our beloveds was over quickly, too. I obviously didn’t want anything to happen to them, but it wasn’t intense enough. But that’s me!
I read this one for a change, and I really got involved. I got addicted to the book. To be fair, I've always loved DK's writing. I've read everything she's written, all the prequels, her standalone, Beth Katz series. I loved about this book is that everyone was in it!!!!!! So we had Beth, Styles, Raven, Jo, Kalo, Carter and more – it was a massive reunion! We even “saw” one of my favourite killers, one of my favourite characters, rightly or wrongly! The tarot card killer turned up. I'm dying for another book on the Tarot card killer and for Beth and Styles. It was fab to see these characters. They didn't get a lot of page time because this book's quite short, but every page and word counted. Every character was needed.
I could moan and say I didn't see enough Rowley because he is my favourite in the team. I could moan and say we didn't see enough of Wolfe because he's another one of my favourites. But they all played their role. They all had a purpose, and the book isn't about them. The book is about the victims. The book is about the murderer. The book is about how one small town is a serial killer Central. I did really enjoy it.
I am looking forward to seeing how the rest of the series pans out. And that ending was just, it was actually really, really sweet. And if there were never any other books, then it was the perfect way to end the series. I'm not saying the series is ending. I would hate for the series to end. I'm just saying, if it was to end, it was lovely.
I am intrigued to see Spring or Summer again in Black Rock Falls, preferably not when it's hunting season or bear season or cold season or Halloween LOL. I think they need a break. Would like to see the town in its sunshine glory. I would like to see the town where no serial killers happen. Ah, then we wouldn't have a book. A strong addition to the series, and it’s a chilling one!
Watch Over Me is the latest entry into the Kane and Alton series by D.K. Hood. This is one of my favorite series to read and Watch Over Me is a thriller that kept me on edge until the end. When a teacher escapes an attempted kidnapping, she goes to the offices of Detective Kane and Sheriff Alton to report the incident. As the kidnapper continues to leave threatening messages for Ellie, the teacher, she is terrified. Jenna Alton is not sure what's going on, but in the video footage from where the kidnapping took place, Ellie can't be seen in any of it. Could Ellie be making this up to get attention or did the kidnapper know where the cameras were and avoid them? A few days later, social worker Laney Prescott is reported missing. When Jenna and Dave go to her home, they're too late as she's dead from strangulation.
Someone is hunting women in Black Creek Falls and stalking them before he strikes. Will Jenna and Dave be able to find the killer before he takes another woman's life? When a nurse goes missing, Jenna fears for the worst. Will they be able to find her in time? There's a huge snowfall that makes investigating treacherous and it's the week before Christmas. Jenna and Dave want to be able to wrap this case up before the big day. Will Jenna's team be able to find out what's going on and get justice for the women? This book is unnerving as you're always waiting for the next threat and worried for the characters we've come to know and love. I love reading a book set at Christmas when it's almost Christmas in real time. I absolutely loved Watch Over Me and rate it 5 stars with my highest recommendation. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of Watch Over Me in exchange for a fair review! #WatchOverMe
It’s Christmas in Montana but it wouldn’t be a trip to Black Rock Falls without something going down. This time it’s double trouble!
The whole festive feel got the gang back together. Everyone navigated to Black Rock Falls to share in festivities at Casa Alton/Kane. A kind of Avengers Assemble for Hood’s law enforcement tribe. But this meant not just the sheriff’s department was to be reckoned with. Any culprit had a multi-law enforcement community against them. And knowing what I know, it’s formidable!
I did question Ellie and her situation. But I was wrong! I won’t say any more but I couldn’t have been more wrong with my thoughts.
I have come to the conclusion I need my own Beast. Hood manages to fuel my anxiety of the cold weather and Watch Over Me really doesn’t help. Kane’s vehicle would give me so much more confidence driving through the UK winter – nothing like Montana’s version but still!
This latest Kane and Alton instalment from Hood is pacey with the dual investigation along with the arrival of the various parties of different law enforcement agencies. Christmas in Black Rock Falls may be snowy, icy and treacherous but any criminal needs to beware/ this town is protected by the best and at the holiday period, it’s ultra protected!
I've read and really enjoyed every book in this series. Until now. This just seemed more Waltons than Serial Killer Central. The main focus seemed to be who was coming for Christmas and where they'd sleep rather than the case they were supposed to be working. I hope the next one gets back to the drama and thrills of the earlier books.
✅I have to say that Black Rock Falls lives up the name everyone knows it by “Serial Killer Central.” It seems every serial killer ends up in Black Rock Falls eventually! Jenna and Dave have an unusual case of someone killing a teacher and a social worker….is there a common thread between the two? Jenna, Dave and the team start investigating before any more murders can occur. They are narrowing the field down as they investigate individuals that seem capable of the murders. But, as each one is ruled , that leaves the question…..who is the murderer????? The race against a bad snowstorm has them hustling to get answers. I always look forward to more Kane and Alton….though I do wonder how many more books in the series the author is going to share with us?
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Title: Watch Over Me Author: D. K. Hood Series: Detectives Alton and Kane #28 Publisher: Bookouture Genre: Crime Thriller Pub Date: December 16, 2025 My Rating: 4.4 Stars Pages: 258 If Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane are new to you here is some background info ~ They live in Black Rock Falls and have an adorable son, Tauri and a dog Duke. Although I did not read the earlier books in this series, I have know Jenna and David are both in ‘Witness Protection’ and have changed their identity both with a changed appearance with a new face as well as new names.
It is Christmas time in Black Rock Falls.
Jenna gets a call late from Detective Raven regarding a woman at the Triple Z Roadhouse’ hiding as she just escaped from her kidnapper and is still there. They hurry to the road house and interview the victim, she has a nasty bump and cut on her head. Although she is unable to identify the kidnapper, she knows the car was a SUV as the interior looked like her car. They do a search but are not able to find anything however knowing the car is a big help as they can check the camera at both places. Middle schoolteacher Ellie McBride left school late last evening and knew a big snow storm was on its way so went to a 24/7 Hr. Convenience store to get milk etc. It was late and although she was being careful but dropped her keys and was attacked from behind. Later when they stopped for gas at a roadhouse, they checked on her and knew she was either dead or out cold. So went into the roadhouse for a beer. She was then able to escape. Now days later, a deadly message is written on her classroom’s whiteboard .it appears whoever took her isn’t finished .Then a social worker is strangled, Alton and Kane fear they have a serial killer in their town Things get even more complicated with a blizzard on its way.
The other stories in this series have included several suspects and whodunit a surprise. This one whodunit wasn’t a shocked but it was great how they got enough proof as to how and why this person was guilt. I had expectations of enjoying this and wasn’t disappointed. Now I am looking forward to #29.
. I have read several other D.K. Hood thrillers and really enjoyed them. I read most of the Special Agent Beth Katz series and became a fan. However, I got on the Alton and Kane train late – note this is #28. I totally enjoyed all ones that I have read. So here I am again. Pleased that I wasn’t all that lost by getting on board so late in this series.
A Big Thank You to NetGalley and Bookouture for this eGalley. Publishing Release Date scheduled for December 16, 2025.
It’s always a real treat when you get to read a book by one of your favorite authors — especially when it’s the writer behind one of the best series on my (by now rather long) list.
With every book I’ve finished from this series, I’ve always hoped it wouldn’t be the last one, because I truly can’t imagine saying goodbye to these characters. I’d feel lost if I could never again devour a story with them in the spotlight. There are some series I still miss, but thankfully this author keeps spoiling me with yet another strong and gripping story.
The world is a beautiful place, but it can also be very dangerous. It seems as if there’s more danger now than ever before — and maybe that’s true — but I also think it’s more visible these days because of social media. Black Rock Falls may look like a picturesque little town, but it’s apparently irresistible to serial killers. If I’d been born there, I think I’d have packed my bags a long time ago! Yet, despite all the horrors, people there still seem to love living in this town, and there’s a real sense of community.
This time again, a few villains are threatening to ruin the Christmas spirit for Jenna, Kane, and their “family.” But the police team is sharp as ever, and together with their FBI colleagues and loyal police dogs, they make sure the troublemakers end up exactly where they belong — behind bars.
Jenna and Kane have been through fire before, and every time, I cross my fingers and send them positive vibes for a safe return. They’re like cats with nine lives — and I hope they have plenty left! Once again, I found myself holding my breath more than once.
I thoroughly enjoyed this intense story — the tension was palpable from start to finish. Not once did I guess who the culprit was; the author gives you such a wide range of suspects that it’s impossible to choose. I had absolutely no clue!
I truly hope the author still has many more surprises up her sleeve to keep this absolutely fantastic series going for a long time to come.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.
🕵️ In Watch Over Me, D.K. Hood once again plunges readers into the dark and unsettling world of Black Rock Falls, where Detectives Kane and Alton face a chilling new serial killer. The novel opens with a disturbing crime that immediately sets the tone: a predator who thrives on control and psychological terror. Hood’s hallmark style—fast pacing, escalating tension, and layered investigation—drives the narrative forward with relentless energy.
The plot balances procedural detail with psychological suspense. Kane and Alton’s partnership remains the backbone of the series, their complementary strengths—his tactical precision and her sharp intuition—providing both stability and depth. The investigation unfolds through a series of twists that keep the reader guessing, while the small-town setting amplifies the claustrophobic sense that danger lurks everywhere.
🔍 The killer’s methods highlight the fragility of safety and the ease with which it can be shattered.
- Resilience in partnership: Kane and Alton’s dynamic continues to evolve, showing how trust and collaboration are essential in confronting evil.
- Community under siege: Hood underscores how violence in a close-knit town reverberates far beyond the immediate victims.
- High tension: The pacing rarely lets up, keeping the reader in a state of unease.
- Character consistency: Kane and Alton remain compelling leads, their professionalism tempered by empathy.
- Atmosphere: Black Rock Falls is vividly drawn, its isolation magnifying the menace of the crimes.
🎧 Watch Over Me is a gripping addition to the Kane and Alton series, delivering exactly what long-time readers expect: a taut, unsettling thriller with a strong investigative core.
Hood’s ability to sustain suspense across 28 installments is impressive, and this novel demonstrates her continued skill at blending procedural authenticity with psychological intensity.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An absolutely gripping, breath-stealing thriller — one of the best in the series!
Watch Over Me is D.K. Hood at her absolute finest. From the very first icy, atmospheric scene, this book grabs you by the throat and refuses to let go. The tension is relentless, the danger feels chillingly real, and the emotional stakes for Jenna and Dave have never been higher.
The opening chapter with Ellie McBride is masterfully tense — the kind that makes you forget to breathe. Hood’s ability to plunge readers straight into danger and keep that momentum going is unmatched. Every chapter ends with a pulse-spiking moment that pulls you deeper into the mystery.
Jenna Alton is brilliant in this instalment — sharp, intuitive, and fiercely determined. Her instincts about Ellie’s kidnapping attempt create an addictive uncertainty: is Ellie telling the truth, or is something more sinister lurking beneath the surface? The added disappearance of Laney Prescott raises the tension even further, and the way Hood weaves those threads together is incredibly satisfying.
What really stands out is the atmosphere. The snow, the isolation, the treacherous roads — the environment becomes its own villain, amplifying the suspense and making every rescue attempt feel like a race against nature itself.
And as always, the killer is crafted with chilling precision: unpredictable, unnerving, and terrifyingly realistic.
This book delivers everything fans love about the Kane and Alton series — high-stakes investigations, strong character dynamics, chilling villains, and edge-of-your-seat suspense. After 28 books, D.K. Hood proves she can still surprise, still terrify, and still deliver an utterly addictive read.
If you love crime thrillers that keep you reading long past bedtime, Watch Over Me is a must. I devoured it in one sitting and wanted to start again immediately.
Set against the icy backdrop of Black Rock Falls at Christmastime, this was an awesome read that kept the tension high from the very first page. The attempted kidnapping of schoolteacher Ellie McBride immediately hooks you, and the mystery only deepens as unsettling questions arise—especially when surveillance footage suggests Ellie may not be telling the whole truth. D.K. Hood’s Watch over Me is a winner!
One of the strongest elements of this book is the character development. Sheriff Jenna Alton is a compelling, determined lead whose sense of justice drives the story forward. Her partnership with Deputy David Kane adds depth, and the emotional weight of each crime feels real and earned. As the body count rises and vulnerable women are targeted, the stakes grow higher, making Jenna’s race against time gripping and intense.
The plot is tightly woven, with clever twists that keep you guessing. Just when you think you understand what’s happening, the story takes a darker turn. The mystery surrounding Ellie, the escalation of violence, and the claustrophobic isolation caused by heavy snowfall all combine to create a powerful sense of dread.
The writing and atmosphere truly shine. The snowbound setting isn’t just a backdrop—it becomes a threat of its own, amplifying the danger and urgency as roads close and help becomes scarce. The cold, eerie tone perfectly matches the brutality of the crimes.
While a few moments felt slightly predictable, they didn’t detract from the overall experience. This is a fast-paced, chilling thriller with strong characters, a gripping mystery, and an unforgettable winter setting.
Highly recommended for fans of suspenseful crime novels.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review Watch Over Me, the 28th(!) book in the engrossing Detectives Kane and Alton series from DK Hood. We're coming up on Christmas in Black Rock Falls, and the whole gang will be gathering at Jenna and Dave's ranch, but of course no holiday can pass without a murder or two; and just for good measure, a pending drug distribution bust. A young teacher is assaulted and kidnapped on her way home one dark, snowy night. But when she escapes and reports the incident to Sheriff Jenna Alton, things don't seem to be adding up. And then when mysterious messages start appearing in her classroom, there is further confusion as to the culprit. But then, a death is reported. And it's murder, And the situation is similar to that of the first. So it seems that there is a killer out there - and then, another murder! Suddenly, it seems that they have another serial killer on the loose, and the investigation begins in earnest. As everyone has begun to gather for the holiday festivities, Jenna and Dave have lots of assistance - and it's all hands on deck for the drug bust, too! In the course of the murder investigation, they come upon a suspected pedophile; meaning to circle back once they have the proper warrants in place, they discover the recent work of the Tarot Killer (who would have though?). And then in the course of the murder investigations, another woman is grabbed! Will the team arrive in time? And will it be a happy Christmas? Highly recommended (I've read all of the previous 27 books). You don't need to have read the series, as there's enough information to orient the reader, but it certainly helps.
There is never a dull moment in Black Rock Falls a/k/a Serial Killer Central. It is Christmastime, but silent nights are not something you see very much in this small town, though the perpetrator in this case moves like a thief in the night.
A strange kidnapping happens in the beginning pages. The victim escapes. When Jenna and crew are called to the scene, she is puzzled. She wants to believe the victim was kidnapped, but something does not add up.
When another woman disappears, the puzzle deepens. They are fighting not only an unseen killer, but inclement weather as well. As usual this author pulls you deep into the story as the creep factor is almost unbearable. You do not want to turn the next page, but you know you have to. Strange and creepy occurrences are a regular thing in this series, but it still creeps me out every time.
This book was truly addictive. The mystery is a true head scratcher. The all star cast of characters with their mad skill sets make reading this book and this series pleasurable. Seeing Jenna and David build their family further in each book as been a plus as well. Even though the characters solve crimes, the author does a great job of sharing their personal side as family members and friends, which makes the characters more relatable. It is like visiting with old friends, who are definitely the type of friends that you want on your side. I rate this one another five plus star winner for this series.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A snowbound town. A vanishing truth. A killer who thrives in silence.
Set against the frostbitten backdrop of Black Rock Falls, D.K. Hood’s latest Kane and Alton thriller is a masterclass in small-town suspense with a festive twist of fear.
From the moment schoolteacher Ellie McBride stumbles into the sheriff’s office with a tale of near-abduction, the snow begins to fall—and so does the first domino in a chilling chain of events. As Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane dig deeper, the lines between victim and suspect blur, and the icy roads become as treacherous as the secrets buried beneath them.
Hood’s prose is brisk and cinematic, with just enough emotional depth to keep your heart racing for more than one reason. The pacing is relentless, the atmosphere deliciously claustrophobic, and the stakes—both personal and professional—feel razor-sharp. Jenna’s quiet resilience anchors the chaos, while the snowstorm becomes a character in its own right: isolating, smothering, and eerily beautiful.
Perfect for fans of Lisa Regan and Melinda Leigh, this installment can be read as a standalone, but it’s even more rewarding if you’ve followed Jenna and Kane’s journey. Think hot cocoa with a shot of adrenaline.
With thanks to DK Hood, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC.
This, like all the rest of D.K. Hood's books was a true thriller and a fantastic read. I am really enjoying the close knit family dynamic between all of the characters that are in each book. The Sheriffs office and the FBI's office along with their spouses and children have all become one big happy family and they all watch out for one another.
I love the thriller part of this one as well. This one is about a social worker named Ellie McBride. She is a lovely woman according to her co-workers. Lets get real though do any of us really know each other the way we think we do? Anyway, Ellie gets kidnapped from a convenience store and locked in a trunk. When she starts to wake up she has no idea where she is and/ or how long she has been out cold.
There is quite a few other things going on all at the same time as well , such as a drug ring that is being watched until they get enough proof for the DA. They also have the Tarot Killer that strikes again in this book. Not going to say why but you will know if you read it! This is a not to be missed book. You will never guess who it is and it will keep you up at nigh trying to figure it out!
All in all this is an amazing read and I am so thankful that I got to read it.
Thank you to NetGalley for the early read and to Bookouture Publishing For the early read I really appreciate it!
A Christmas serial killer? Isn’t that on everyone’s Christmas list? Black Rock Fall is known as serial killer central, and Police Chief Jenna Alton is no stranger to high pressure cases and working under pressure. She along with her husband and the rest of the team are working against a deadline so no one else’s life is claimed as a killer is abducting seemingly unrelated women.
I like that amidst the case, we get a little family time with Alton and Kane. It balances the tension from the case.
Ellie the first attempted abductee gets free but there is some concern with Alton that she may somehow be a part of the wrong side of the case. I liked that twist that the team is working to prove or disprove that as they work their way through their leads.
In addition to battling a killer, the team battles a snowstorm. The tension is sky high and this one kept me guessing. Beth Katz, from the author’s other series, makes an appearance. And IYKYK with her cameo.
It was an enjoyable read and works well as a stand alone even though this is book 28 in the series. there is a lot of character development from book to book, if you like following that, but if you are there for the case, it works well on its own.
Definitely for fans of complex police procedurals or crime novels.
A teacher is kidnapped then manages to escape. But Kane and Alton think something isn’t quite right about her story... Watch Over Me is the 28th book in the Kane and Alton series of crime thrillers. Ellie is kidnapped on her way home. She struggles to free herself from the boot of the car and manages to get to safety. The problem is that there is no evidence of a crime except for Ellie's testimony and the injury to her head. Sheriff Jenna Alton even begins to wonder if Ellie staged the entire incident. But then another woman is murdered and evidence planted which directly links to Ellie, proving she had been telling the truth. Meanwhile the deputies are staking out ready for a drugs bust in a plotline that has continued from an earlier book. This along with the main plot gives the opportunity for the FBI agents to return. This book has lots of snow and festive preparation in the lead up to Christmas. I’m finding some elements quite repetitive from earlier books and felt a little annoyed at Kane for being overly protective of Jenna when she in more than capable (as she has proved so often!) I love FBI agent Beth Katz who is secretly the Tarot Killer so was glad to see her return. Watch Over Me has action, murder, friendship, family and festivities.
Days later, social worker Laney Prescott is reported missing. Worried that it could be the same person, Jenna rushes to Laney’s small home, but she’s already too late. The twenty eighth outing for Jenna & Dave & another edge of the seat thriller, I’m still loving the series & each new addition feels just as fresh as the first plus there’s the added bonus of how Jenna & Dave’s relationship has changed & deepened, I love the dynamics between the couple. They are aided by the rest of the team & what a tight knit team it is. The case is intriguing, with plenty of tension plus twists & turns. I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
Christmas should be the time of good will but murder seems to be year around in Black Rock Falls. Jenna Alton and Dave Kane find themselves responding to a kidnapping where the story of Ellie escaping seems a bit weird. As notes are left for her at her school, the police struggle to figure out if she is doing this for attention or if there is someone out there targeting her. The department is split with investigating that as well as drugs being run through a local ranch. When a social worker is found dead, the investigation kicks into high gear as the stress to find a common connection is high. Add in the department still has to respond to normal call outs and wrecks due to the weather and the action is fast paced and non=stop. There are a lot of suspects and it is so cleverly written that it is so hard to pick out the murderer. The characters are developed so that as much as you know they all have a strong work ethic, they are bonded to each other in friendship. It ends with a light note of reminding us that sometimes friends are the best family you can have.
This book is part of a series, but reads easily as a standalone. Ellie ventures out into blizzard-like conditions to a nearby store to get food supplies and gets kidnapped. She wakes up in the trunk of a vehicle and, after managing to escape, she explains what happened to Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane who have problems believing her. They are still skeptical after a second woman has something similar happen to her and the evidence points toward Ellie.
Since it's almost Christmas, some of Ellie and David's FBI friends are coming to spend the holidays and join in on trying to solve the case and help in apprehending some other criminals.
There's a lot going on in this seedy little town, aka serial killer central, so I can easily see more books in this series being written. The description of the blizzard and bitter cold added to the urgency of the storyline. This is a fast paced, easy flowing thriller that can easily be devoured in one sitting.
Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an ARC of this book.
When a young woman reports that she was abducted and that she got away from her abductor, Jenna and Dave are not entirely sure whether to believe her or not. There is absolutely no evidence to support her assertions.
Then another young woman in their jurisdiction turns up dead, she has obviously been strangled. With the tag of "serial killer central", Black Rock Falls is not a place where you want to be wandering around, alone, after dark. To top it off, it is the dead of winter and the snow is piled up high, making conditions treacherous for Jenna's team to investigate the murder.
Unfortunately for Ellie, her case gets pushed to a side a little bit as murder has priority when it comes to investigations.
This is quite the twisty tale!
I really had no clue who the "baddie" was until the author revealed it, which is how it should be :)
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.
When a school teacher is almost kidnapped and then a social worker is strangled, sheriff Jenna Alton and deputy Dave Kane realise that yet again they have a serial killer in their town.
This was very atmospheric, with descriptions of the snow falling painting a true picture of Christmas. Without giving away details, the action scenes were so detailed I could clearly picture it in my mind, and I found my self reacting as if I was there.
The relationships between the team, and the extended FBI team members were fantastic. They all work so well together and the characters are full and likeable.
This series follows a pattern, where there are a number of suspects known and the big reveal always is a surprise. I enjoy this and devour this series. Truly a book I couldn’t put down.
Christmas, the time of goodwill to all men, but this is Black Rock Falls, serial killer central, and amongst the tinsel and the lights women are being stalked, terrorised and murdered. Meanwhile if that isn’t enough to be keeping Jenna, Kane and the gang busy, there are suspicious going’s on in a local ranch, where there’s more than horse pellets being delivered. Another brilliant rollercoaster of a ride as everyone gathers to clear up the crimes, inflict a bit of nemesis and to celebrate the season. I love how all the characters are involved in this one. The subplot bubbles along nicely in the background too as we catch up with the characters that have come to feel like friends. Number 28 in the series but somehow the author keeps it all as fresh as a piece of pie from Aunt Betty’s. Another brilliant addition to this excellent series.
It’s right before Christmas and Jenna has her hands full. Another elusive killer is tightening the noose around Black Rock Falls and it’s killing the holiday vibes. Another case is about to be cracked but Jenna has to call in her Feebie associates for that. As always calm cool amd collected Dave does what he does best: drive the Beast and take out the vermin. I don’t know how Hood concocts these plots and stories but they have been the highlight of my reading repertoire for several years! I loved how all the gang gathered for Christmas along with the dogs. The ending was perfect I had to reread several times before I’d let myself leave the page. The only thing I’d like better is to find Kane, Wolf, Raven, Carter, Styles, and Rio under my tree!! Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for the advance copy.
