Light for the Journey: A Movemental Love Story

Rate this book
What if Advent is more than waiting—what if it’s a call to walk with those who wander?
Light for the A Movemental Love Story invites you to rediscover the Advent story through the eyes of the displaced, the marginalized, and the longing. Blending biblical narrative with today’s urgent realities, this book weaves the journeys of Mary and Joseph, the Magi, and the shepherds with the stories of millions who are searching for home in a world on the move.
With over 120 million people currently displaced worldwide, the ache for belonging and hope is more relevant than ever. Drawing from years of passionate work with World Relief and a deep commitment to the gospel and the life of Christ, Dr. Matt Fretwell guides readers through a season of exile, light, and promise. Each chapter explores how God’s movemental love breaks through darkness, meets us in our waiting, and calls us to become advocates for justice and bearers of hope.
You’ll find immersive storytelling, biblical insight, and practical steps for partnering with nonprofits, churches, and organizations serving refugees and migrants. Discovery questions at the end of each chapter invite you to reflect, respond, and see your own journey within God’s unfolding story.
Whether you are longing for hope, seeking to understand God’s heart for the vulnerable, or ready to make a difference in a world on the move, Light for the Journey offers inspiration, challenge, and a vision of love that crosses every border. Step into the movement—carry the light, and discover how God’s love story is still being written through you.

I wish I could give this book 3.5 stars. There’s a lot of good in the text. It does a wonderful job focusing on marginalized and displaced populations and how our faith calls us radical kinship with them. It does sound in a manner that invites you to reflect on your own life and how you can live without your faith on a more intentional basis.

However, the author makes a lot of assumptions about how individuals in the Christmas story would have felt in specific circumstances. It does so in a manner that is not necessarily disingenuous to how people may respond, but in a way that suggests that this author has specific insight into the minds of people like Mary and Joseph.

Finally, this text is a lot more about the Christmas story as opposed to the season of Advent. Traditionally, these are two different periods and while the emphasis on the Christmas text is not bad I was hoping for more of a text that focused on advent itself.
