Can a love from the past bring hope for the future?Escape to Greece this summer where azure waters sparkle and orange blossom scents the air, and discover a story filled with sweeping emotion and romance that's impossible to forget…
____________
A lost love. A devastating secret. And a summer that could change everything…
Two years on from her husband’s death, dressmaker Ellen is learning how to live again and put memories of a difficult marriage behind her.
However, never far from her mind is another Alexandros, her first love from the summer she turned eighteen.
The moment she'd arrived in his hometown of Kardamyli in Greece, Ellen had been intoxicated by the scent of orange blossom in the air, the days of endless sunshine and sparkling azure waters – but most of all by Alexandros himself. They were meant to be, until a devastating secret forced Ellen to leave and never look back…
But now, when her best friend suggests they recreate their teenage summer in Greece, Ellen knows it’s time to confront her past. Will Greece give her the freedom – and happiness – she desperately craves? And there, amidst the lush olive groves, could she rediscover the love she thought she’d lost forever?
A gloriously escapist and emotional read set under the Grecian sun. Fans of Karen Swan, Victoria Hislop and Carol Kirkwood will love this unforgettable tale of sisterhood, hope and second chances.
Emma Cowell is new to me. After touring a couple of Greek Islands, I fell in love with the people and places. That made me want to read Greek novels. This one being my first, I must and desire reading every one of Emma's books. I am profoundly hooked!
Two years on from the death of her husband, dressmaker Ellen is at a crossroads. After years of being subjecting to horrific domestic abuse behind closed doors, it is becoming increasingly difficult to hide the truth when everyone assumes she must be grieving for John, a man who seemed a loving and attentive husband to outside eyes - especially from their son Tristan, and her best friend Penny.
Thoughts of her first love, Alexandros, who she met in his hometown of Kardamyli in Greece, during a long-ago holiday with Penny, have never left her. She cannot help but reflect on the future she might have had if her eighteen year old self had been allowed to live the life they planned - had they not been tragically parted by the knowledge of a secret she was forced to keep.
When Penny suggest revisiting their youthful selves by going back to Kardamyli for a much-needed holiday, Ellen is determined to use this as a chance to find her way back to the woman she once was... before all the secrets.
Emma Cowell does exactly what she does best in Beneath the Orange Blossom, her fifth spellbinding novel, taking you on an intensely emotional journey in beautiful Greece - this time through the eyes of Ellen, in Kardamyli.
Ellen is a woman whose life has been derailed by secrets. Torn away from her first love by the spiteful subterfuge of another, she only seems to her found herself tied to more misery through marriage to the wrong man. With complicated feelings about the past, and bound by the veneer of a supposedly happy marriage, we meet her in the moment she feels her spirit stirring within. It is time to reconnect with herself (and her friend Penny) by returning Kardamyli.
Greece comes alive in all its evocative glory through Ellen's eyes. She revels in her return to the place where she was once so full of expectation, but facing the past and taking charge of her own future makes her two week break rather less relaxing than planned. Pulled into village life a way she did not to expect, when her seamstress skills are required, she realises she does not know Penny as well as she thought. Painful recriminations, misunderstandings, and heartfelt confidences lead to friendship drama it seems impossible to recover from. And then, of course, there is a reunion with Alexandros that means facing up to more heart-breaking revelations.
Twists and turns keep you fully invested in the love story between Ellen and Alexandros, and the course of Ellen and Penny's friendship, with all the little pieces of the storylines coming together at just the right time to cleverly explore sensitive themes of damaging secrets, hidden scars, shame (especially the misplaced shame of women), female friendship, and the relationship between mothers and sons. All praise due for a well-written older female protagonist, and the sensitive way Cowell approaches the experiences of survivors of domestic abuse.
I adore the way Cowell weaves Greek mythology through her tales. Here she uses the prophetic, stitch-laden skills of The Fates to perfection, echoing their talents with the 'threads of life' in Ellen's own intuitive mastery of dressmaking as the story plays out. Beautifully done.
Snuggling up with an Emma Cowell book is always time well spent. I fully expected to shed tears over these characters, and she gave me ample opportunity to work through a box of tissues on the way to ending full of hope and second chances, tinged with sadness. There is something really touching about the way her women find common ground and understanding, and the little village of Kardamyli has the warm and welcoming community dreams are made of. Escapist gorgeousness to lose yourself in.
Having read and loved all of Emma Cowell’s books I couldn’t wait to dive in to Beneath the Orange Blossom. I knew I was in for a treat, and it has been such a joy to read. An emotional rollercoaster, but an absolute joy! Ellen is an easily likeable character, and I could almost physically feel the weight of the world on her shoulders. So much heartache for such a lovely lady. I’m not sure I could have just ignored the love of my life on the say so of his mother, but as the story progresses and I learnt more of the truth behind her decision to stay away, the more I could understand why, especially as she was only eighteen at the time. Such a heart-breaking waste though. So many years of true love missed out on. Ellen is now a widow, and her marriage wasn’t even a happy one which makes things even more heart-breaking, especially as she kept things to herself, even from her best friend, allowing everyone else to believe her husband had been a lovely man, mainly to protect their son. She’s a stronger woman than I think I could ever be. I was over the moon for her when she agreed with her best friend, Penny, to do something for herself for once and return to Greece in an attempt to re-create the holiday they enjoyed in their teens. An excellent chance for her to relax and let her hair down. However, even her friendship with Penny is strained and I felt so sorry for the fact that she seems to have spent most of their friendship over the years bowing down to whatever suited Penny best. Always being the one to back down and just do whatever Penny wanted to do, to keep the peace. Between this, her abusive husband, and an unlikable daughter-in-law she really does put up with a lot from a lot of people. I’m not sure how she remained so patient with everyone. I could talk about this book for hours, but I’m really trying not to spoil it for anyone. I really enjoyed Ellen back in Greece. I love how she effortlessly integrates herself into the community. I can understand Penny being annoyed by her working when they were supposed to be on holiday, but I could also understand Ellen’s need to help with a desperate situation. Plus, Penny was still, even now, dictating what they should and shouldn’t do without much thought about what Ellen might want. The tension between them is palpable and builds over the course of the holiday until Ellen decides to come clean about her marriage. Penny’s reaction really shocked me. I was glad Ellen had someone to turn to, and I couldn’t blame her for grabbing on to a second chance at happiness. Although, that wasn’t going to happen without its own heartbreak which needed to happen in order to move forward. Honestly, I was emotionally drained by the end of this book. In the best way of course. Beautifully written, as always. Unforgettable characters with a story that will stay with me for a very long time to come.
** Many thanks to the author and publisher for my digital arc via NetGalley**
The scent of orange blossom swirled around as her heart pounded louder than the drums of the musicians who had begun again. It was as if she'd floated away from her body, high above the village and over the peaks of the mountains, watching herself from afar.
What a lovely start to May! Under the Lemon Tree was one of my favourite books of last Summer, and Beneath The Orange Blossom is fast on track to be one of my favourite books of this year!
Emma Cowell never disappoints; this time with a powerful tale of romance, friendship, heartbreak, moving on, looking back, growth, and the beautiful country and Fates of Greece!
Ellen is a delightful main character, haunted by two secret aspects of her past - watching her blossom from wounded widow to liberated woman was absolutely wonderful. I love that she's a dressmaker, as I fancy I was a seamstress in another life.
As always Emma Cowell pays a delightful homage to the country of Greece, and pushes it ever higher up on my list of countries I must visit! I could practically feel the balmy heat and smell the sweet oranges as I read.
My own heart broke with Ellen's, as her stories with John and Aléxandros and Penny and even Tristan all intertwined, and my heart was equally warmed with every beat of healing and reconciliation, along with Ellen's blooming friendships with the likes of Delphí and Théa in Greece.
The twists and turns had my jaw dropping, and I even cried a few times.
But I'll refrain from spoiling - I urge everyone to read this treat of a novel!
(And this isn't an Advance Copy - Tesco put them out early, much to my delight!)
Ellen’s story was beautiful, hard and full of bumps but beautiful. It’s been an absolute joy reading it.
There were many things I loved about Ellen but one of the things I loved the most was how strong she was and the strength that grew even more between the pages. Her character growth was so beyond beautiful, seeing her gain the strength she needed to take control and take what she wanted, I loved it.
I had a very soft spot for Aléxandros. In a world where Ellen felt small and not enough he helped show her that she was. He was there when she needed him and cheered her on. He was such an incredible character, I wish I had my own Aléxandros. Haha.
And we can’t forget to mention the bestie, Penny. What a woman she was. I can’t lie though, there were times she wasn’t very likeable but she made me like her again.
Then that ending came about and oh my heart, I wasn’t not expecting that outcome, that twist. My heart just broke and the tears just came rolling out. Ugh, so emotional.
Emma Cowell doesn’t just write a love story, she writes a story with heart. A story that’ll have you so invested you won’t be able to put it down. She truly knows how to write an incredibly touching and deep read that hits the emotions hard. Her writing easily comes to life and has you feeling like you’re there, experiencing everything with these characters, it’s truly stunning.
Under The Orange Tree is a story about a lost love, a second chance and everything that happens between those lost years. It’s a story about grief and love and finding beauty in the things you love. It’s beautiful, it’s sad and utterly addicting.

I loved the author's previous release and Beneath The Orange Blossom certainly didn't disappoint. The story was beautifully written and easy to follow with good pacing and a great cast of characters. I also loved the place settings in the story. Overall a brilliant novel that I highly recommend to other readers. 💖 Thank you to the author, Emma Cowell, the publisher Avon books and Netgalley for my arc ebook copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I always look forward to Emma Cowell’s books because they transport me to Greece and tantalize me with everything that I love about the islands.
This time, the focus is on painful endings giving rise to new beginnings and the need for honesty and transparency in all relationships.
Thirty-six years ago, Penny and Ellen came to Greece as 18-year-olds and are now returning for another adventure to recapture their youth. As the story progresses, their secrets unravel, and they discover that honesty with themselves and each other sets them free.
I loved watching these middle-aged women come to terms with what matters most in life and decide what they want from the next chapter of their lives and who they want to include in it.
Without giving anything away, let’s just say that I was captured by a heartfelt story about trust, regret, second chances, once-in-a-lifetime love, the kindness of strangers, the power of being authentic, and the power we have within us to alter our own fate.
If you enjoy stories about new seasons in life and new beginnings, this is one to watch out for. Sometimes life mirrors the rhythm of one chapter closing and another beginning. Penny and Ellen become aware of this rhythm and discover that sometimes change is uncertain, but it also carries promise. I loved watching them step into something new.
I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.
I love Emma's books, so was looking forward to another return to Greece and this story definitely delivered. Emma's writing style is so addictive, easy to read and it instantly transported me to the beautiful setting of the harbour town and I could almost smell the orange blossom on the breeze. Ellen was such a strong woman, despite everything she had been through and I really liked this journey for her. Her return to Greece explored lost loves, second chances and exciting new opportunities for her and the ending was everything I was hoping for. There were some twists along the way that I guessed at, especially with her friend, but this didn't take away from the story and the difficult topics throughout were handled and written so well. I really liked the community feel of the story and this really described the kind hearted people and welcomeness that Greece offers. Ellen really gave her heart to a community that she didn't really know and the reward from this was really beneficial and changed her life. This was an emotional and uplifting story that explored second chances and self discovery and would make the perfect holiday read. I can't wait to join Emma on a return trip to Greece again in the future.
Two years after the death of her abusive husband Ellen decides to travel back to Kardamyli in Greece with her best friend Penny, revisiting the place that they had first visited many years before. In her first visit she had met and fallen in love with Alexandros, when she had left despite promising to return to him she was forced to renegade on her promise. This isn't necessarily an easy book to read, covering as it does domestic violence and how difficult it is for women suffering from this to leave a relationship. It is set in a glorious location, where Ellen brings her dressmaking skills to help the villagers, which fits in perfectly with the Greek mythological figures of the three fates Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos who appear in the book. There is the question of whether Ellen will meet up again with Alexandros and how she can explain why she didn't return, at the same time her friendship with Penny comes under stress. What is rewarding is seeing how Ellen grows, finding her inner strength plus that Greek setting. A deep read that I did enjoy despite the negative parts of the story. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.
Beneath the Orange Blossom by Emma Cowell Publication date - 07/05/2026
If you’re craving a sun-soaked escape with emotional depth, this one delivers beautifully. Set against the dreamy backdrop of Greece, this story follows Ellen as she returns to a place filled with memories, first love, and long-buried secrets.
✨ What I loved: The setting is absolutely stunning—you can almost feel the warmth of the sun and smell the orange blossoms through the pages. The story gently explores grief, second chances, and the idea that it’s never too late to rediscover yourself. It’s heartfelt without being too heavy, making it a perfect balance of emotional and uplifting.
While the “lost love” storyline is familiar, it’s the atmosphere and emotional journey that make this stand out. It’s more about healing and self-discovery than just romance.
🌅 Perfect for: • Summer reading • Fans of slow-burn, emotional stories • Anyone who loves travel-inspired fiction
A comforting, escapist read that feels like a holiday in book form.
A great read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thank you to Avonbooks uk & Emma, for the opportunity to read this fabulous story ❤️
Oh this was emotional! A woman who has only just lost her husband two years ago is trying to live again. Grief is so raw and I admired her from the start to try and move on, with memories of a difficult marriage on top of that. When she thinks back to her first love, she heads to Greece and well, its a story of lost love, memories, reliving ones past and shaping your future.
Kardamyli was lovely to get to know. Not a location I had even heard of if I’m honest. What a gorgeous place! I want to go there now. Meet Alexandros perhaps 😉 I was very keen to find out why Ellen left the island and her man in the first place. That was a great plot in the book with a very satisfying denouement.
A novel that will resonate with so many on so many levels – and can we just celebrate the gorgeous fragrance of the story and setting.
Two years on from her husband's death Ellen is coasting along with her life but she feels that she could do things a little differently. In the back of her mind is the thought of how different her life could have been if she had ended up staying in Greece when she fell for Alexandros (when aged 18). Although his mother had a secret that Ellen became aware of and as a result she decided to forego her own happiness and not return.
Unfortunately she ends up married to John who subjects her to domestic abuse during her marriage. This manifests itself in physical and verbal abuse. Their son Tristan is never aware of how his father actually treated his mother.
Ellen decides to return to Greece with her best friend Penny and recreate the fun holiday they had as youngsters. However, both of them have kept big secrets from one another that threaten their long friendship.
I thought Cowell brought the Greek setting to life. She was very sensitive in her portrayal of the abuse that Ellen suffered. Overall an enjoyable read.
I was drawn to Emma Cowell's first book, One Last Letter From Greece, by the setting. However, it was the poetic nature of her writing that had me entranced and keeps me returning to her books
Once again, Ms. Cowell has penned a moving, emotional novel. With her lyrical style, she paints wonderful pictures of the beauty of Greece so vivid you can smell the scent of orange and lemon groves, feel the wind in your hair and see the beauty of a sunset over the water. But, her writing also brings to life the pain of secrets suddenly revealed. Her characters are well developed individuals the reader empathizes with, sympathizes with and, ultimately, celebrates their happiness and joy.
A well crafted tale of friendship and personal growth and of love lost and found, tt carries the reader through a wide spectrum of emotion. I found myself in tears, at times of grief, and at times of joy. This is a beautifully written story that needs to be experienced.
Thank you to Netgalley and Avon Books UK for a copy of this book. The thoughts and opinions are my own.
Once again Emma Cowell transports us to Greece, this time to the village of Kardamyli in the Peloponnese. An unputdownable read and a must for your summer reading list.
Two years on from her husband's death, Ellen is trying to rebuild her life and rediscover herself, spending most of her time looking after her grandchildren and enjoying her passion of dressmaking.
When her oldest friend, Penny, suggests a girls holiday to Greece, to the village where they spent a perfect summer in their teens, how can she possibly say no!
A wonderful story of love, heartbreak, secrets that have been kept for a lifetime, loss and new beginnings. I absolutely loved this book and once again feel like I’m missing old friends now I’ve finished it.
Best friends Ellen and Penny decide to go back to Greece, where they holidayed when they were teenagers. Ellen is recently widowed and is looking to get her life back on track. Penny is a bit of a loose cannon and wants to take risks. Their friendship is put to the test many times. Do they really know each other at all? I loved the setting. Greek sunshine, olive groves, and rosé wine. Perfect. Unfortunately, I found this very repetitive. Ellen's love for Alexandros, why she didn't go back to Greece. It was repeated so many times that I was losing the will to live. I thought the ending was far too padded out. Was there a word count target? Thanks to Netgalley. Auto approved for Avon Books UK for the ARC in return for an honest review.
Another great read from Emma Cowell who is fast becoming one of my favourite writers. Through the author's words, I was transported on a virtual, sensory journey to a stunning Peloponnese village to enjoy the beauty of the area, sample delicious Greek food and inhale the sweet scent of orange blossom. I was intrigued by the secrets that were threaded throughout the story that kept me guessing. It was good to watch Ellen's character grow in confidence as soon as she touched down in Greece again and confront the awful memories in her back story. A story of lost true love, an exploration of friendship and the hope of second chances, I have no hesitation in recommending this beautifully written novel.
"Beneath the Orange Blossom" is a story of re-discovery after a life survived rather than lived. When widow Ellen is invited by best friend Penny to relive their adventures from when they were 18 she is hesitant at first. Thankfully though she changes her mind and they fly off to Greece together for a 2 week break. It transpires that a lot can happen, and a lot change, in a fortnight. Secrets old and new are brought to light and Ellen can finally envisage a new life.
The scent of orange blossom wafts on the warm scented air while reading this emotional story. Evocative and hopeful.
Thanks to Net Galley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of the book.
Emma Cowell has done it again! Another beautiful destination story set in sunny Greece, full of heartbreak, hope, friendship, love and more.
As lifelong best friends Ellen and Penny agree to 'take two' of their Greek holiday from when they were just 18, they realise that each other's lives aren't quite what they seem. With Ellen rebuilding her life after her husband passed away 2 years ago and Penny living the high life full of charity gigs and extravagant beauty treatments, the two have a lot to learn about each other.
Once they arrive in Greece, Ellen immediately settles in with the sun, the scent of orange blossoms and all the amazing food she'd missed over the last 36 years! And something else... Ellen knows that her summer romance might still be on the island, but she isn't looking for him. She can't bring herself to face the truth of what made her leave, and what stopped her coming back.
The two friends are pulled in different directions on their holiday. In between dips in the pool and evenings sampling all the local food, Penny is off trying to 'live her best life' and Ellen ends up helping a family in need. Through bickering, hard truths and a few slammed doors, Penny and Ellen need to learn how to be each other's friends again as well as owning up to their truths.
Trigger warning for Domestic Abuse. A topic that I usually avoid reading about, but Emma wrote about it so well. Truthfully, brutally but with a purpose.
I really enjoyed this book and only put it down to make myself dinner! It's a really beautiful story and the ending was a pleasant surprise!
A huge thank you to Netgalley and Emma for the ARC!! <3
I love Greece so another story set in this beautiful country was the perfect read for me. Ellen was last in Greece over 30 years ago with her friend Penny. Here she fell in love with Andreous and promised she would be back but a sighting at the airport on the way home changed everything. On her return again with Penny, she discovers that both friends have been keeping secrets and questions their friendship. This story has some heart wrenching moments that are very emotional but skilfully approached. Love the title as orange blossom features throughout and just oozes Greece. My thanks to Net Galley and publishers Avon for the arc it was a delight and pleasure to read
This was surprisingly quite a moving book, which I wasn't expecting. It showed a few different relationships with their own unique struggles, however the friendship between Ellen and Penny was explored brilliantly, and for me it was the central theme of the book.
I started to get a little fed up waiting for this 'big secret' to be revealed, as I was pretty sure I had worked it out (I had!). After that, the book really took off after previously being just ok.
Beautiful setting, and delivered some really important messages about honesty and vulnerability.
4.5☆ My thoughts: This was an emotional read, and at parts hard to read. Emma handles these delicate and important subjects with such care and attention though. Ellen was a fantastic character, and watching her grow throughout the book filled me with so much joy. The complexity of her changing relationships, determination to be strong and yet still a protector for her son, was brilliantly written. And all set against the backdrop of the gorgeous-sounding Greek village of Kardamyli!
I thoroughly enjoyed this and wouldn't hesitate in recommending it!
Thank you to @avonbooksuk for kindly sending me access an early e-copy of the book on Netgalley
A touching second chance at love happens over thirty-six years later when it all fell apart. The story relates several joys and events during a vacation two best friends take to recapture their teenage vacation to Greece. One twirled about with wild abandon, the other fell in love. When one encounters her lost love, it is time for the heartbreaking truth that drove them apart. It is a vacation of revelations and of setting new paths. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of the book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Emma is really good at what she does. I love the settings for her novels - I always feel like I'm on holiday when I read them. This is an entertaining read with compelling characters and a great story. A must for Emma fans!
Set in beautiful Greece. Best friends Ellen and Penny return to Greece to recreate a trip they took as young women. A story of loss, secrets and second chances. Unfortunately I didn't like the lack of communication or the repetitive mention on the secret.
This story is set in a gorgeous location as we follow two friends when they return to Greece. I liked Ellen and her friend Penny. Each one is dealing with hard life issues. This was a heart wrenching story that also had some secrets. I couldn’t put it down!
Gosh, what a life Ellen had endured, if anyone deserved a second chance it was Ellen. Ellen had been a widow for 2 years and used her creative skills in the form of dressmaking. In a way, this was her one way of escaping her situation for a short time. The main action takes place in Greece in the present day and is linked to a holiday Ellen had there in 1988, when she was 18 years old. This was an engaging read, not always comfortable reading, at times it was a very emotional read. It does have a very satisfying and well deserved ending for Ellen. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a lovely summer read set in Greece. I loved the main character Ellen a grandmother who goes back to Greece with her best friend Penny to recreate a trip they made as young women years before.
The setting was lovely, the sense of community and tradition in the local Greek was authentic and made me want to get on a plane and head there. I loved the many themes in this book. Friendships - how difficult they can be navigate and how people change over time and yet there is something that keeps that relationship going. Ellen and Penny had a difficult journey in this one and this good to see in characters who are slightly older and have lived a life of more experiences. I enjoyed the importance of dressmaking to Ellen and her passion for helping those less fortunate than herself. She is a kind and selfless woman and I enjoyed her journey in this book.
Alexandros is a lovely male character, kind and honest and his life is upended when a family secret is revealed. I loved the connection between him and Ellen and their love for each other had not died.
It’s a lovely story, there are some darker themes which were handled with care which I appreciated and overall an enjoyable read which will spark the desire to head to Greece for a relaxing time.
