3.5 stars rounded down for a mildly interesting historical fiction book set in 1600s France, Switzerland and England. While the blurb calls it a "riveting tale," I thought that it was a pleasant read. but not riveting. William Melliichamp is an 18 year old French Huguenot who violated a government edict by singing a Psalm in French, instead of Latin. His faux friend Tomas has informed on him to the French Inquisition. While attempting to flee Toulouse, he kills a guard. He is now wanted for murder, in addition to his crimes against the church. His journey causes him to eventually change from an entitled narcissist to a caring and kind man.
The french government did indeed persecute Huguenots during the 1600s and the author has a picture of the edict about various acts prohibited, including the singing of Psalms in French. Huguenots emigrated to other countries, besides England and Switzerland, including North America, and South Africa.
One quote, on William realizing what an entitled jerk he is: "Instead, he had become the quick tongued, perfectly coiffed entertainer of the ladies."
This was a LibraryThing book, sent to me by the author, David William Allman. He sent me a signed copy, a nice touch. It is book 1 of a planned trilogy.
