Every decade, a sacrifice must be made to the Scarecrow of Hollow Fields. This year, the sacrifice is me.
Welcome to Hollow Fields, Kansas, 624.
Fifty years ago, the townspeople took it upon themselves to deliver justice in the wake of a brutal murder spree. They tied up the killer and left him in the field to stare at the house where he committed the murders and think about what he did. They expected him to starve to death out there. They expected him to rot on the stake. Instead, he disappeared, never to be seen again.
Since that day, each generation must sacrifice someone in honor of the Scarecrow. But this year's sacrifice doesn't go as planned. Things get out of hand, and one brutal night leads to the disappearance of the newest addition to the town.
Justice has never been served... not for the original slayings, not for the original Scarecrow, not for the years of hazing and ritual bullying, and not for what happened the night I disappeared.
But it's about to be now.
Welcome to Hollow Fields, Population 623... and dropping swiftly.
Are You Scared, Krowe? Is, first and foremost, a horror story. While there is a romantic thread, it is not a romance and should not be read as such. There is an unconventional happily ever after, but this book is not intended for all readers. Please heed the content warnings.
Ermm…this is definitely one of the WTF did I just read 🤣
Gianna, has moved to a new small town, no friends, no boyfriend just an alcoholic mother. Until, Krowe invites her to a Halloween Party, where he insists she will be safe, she will meet others…let’s just say she did meet others but not in the way she thought. In fact it’s in a way no-one would ever want to meet people. I seriously do not want to give you anymore, it’s dark, it’s deranged, it’s unhinged, it’s revenge in its finest! If you have any triggers then do read them 🤭 Cos those scarecrows are there for a reason 😈
I loved this Halloween story, Carly smashed this one to smithereens! It’s a little bit sick, it’s a little bit yuk! It’s a lot violent, it’s a whole lot vengeful but it is written so well, with such effective visuals I just couldn’t put it down 💀🎃
Well, this was unhinged 😂. A lot of authors like to claim something is unhinged because someone is a little morally grey. Not Claire. When she says unhinged, she means it. This was fun (I'm not even entirely sure if I don't need a head check for calling this fun). It was a great kick off into spooky season. That said, this is dark, and I do mean vantablack dark. Check your triggers. Maybe this isn't the book for you if you have them. This will piss you off, gross you out, make you want revenge just as much as the MCs, and maybe, if you're a little screwed up, laugh a bit too. This is a horror book first and foremost. While there is bit of romantic subplot, it is very much secondary and doesn't show itself until halfway through the book or more. Claire doesn't hold back on detail, so know that you're going to experience the horror with the characters. I really did enjoy the FMC and MMC. It was an interesting take on the romance and not something I've read anything like before, which was nice. Even more than the romance, I appreciated the revenge. Not only did everyone deserve that and more, but most of the revenge was very pointed and fitting and no holds barred. If horror is your jam, then this is a great novella. It was a hell of a ride. Again, mind your triggers. Do NOT skip the author's note. I think my only knock to this book was what was lost to keep it a novella. I'd have liked to have the scenes for the entire team, past and present, getting their comeuppance, and I'd have liked to know a little more about the family in the farmhouse, but it didn't make me enjoy it less to get it in the fashion we did. If you like pitch black and unhinged, it's worth the read. Though you may never look at a scarecrow the same again.
This was an ARC read, and my opinion is my own and freely given.
This book was hands down a 5 star spade was hands down my fav when he was introduced I hated Krowe I liked him and than I hated him for what he did he was so careless and he truly didn’t care cause he just let it again while he had his fun also but than again he did have a reason for doing that. I loved him hated him and than loved him again lol.
Rating: 5 Spice: 1.5 Hmm… to say I am speechless is beyond the word for this book. This is my 3rd arc read from this author and this may be the darkest one I have read. First off, those wanting to read this really check your triggers. There is a scene where you need to have a very strong stomach and if you can get past that initial part the rest of the book is really good. What starts off as an innocent invitation to a Halloween “party” tradition to a new girl in town from a player of the football team goes really wrong. The tradition goes back generations but this generation takes it way too far and as a result end up having to pay the consequences for their actions. This is a horror book not a dark romance but there is very very mild romance in the book. Would I personally recommend this book? Yes, if you have a strong stomach and can handle pitch black storylines. This is not your morally grey it’s dark and super unhinged. I love it but tbh needed to really push through the hardest part of the book. Especially if you’re a woman. Please check the triggers. It overall is an excellent book. The characters, the development of the plot and writing is great.
Once again, Carly Claire proves why she's one of my favorite authors. This book was everything and more. This book had everything you could need. Tragedy, pain, feminine rage, and so much more.
This story is told in multiple POV between Gianna, Krowe, and Spade. Gianna just moved into town and is invited to a town tradition. Unbeknownst to her, this tradition is not a pleasant one for the chosen one. After the night passes Spade comes upon her and things amp up. There's not much I can say without giving away some spoilers.
Towards the beginning I felt so bad for Gianna. She just wanted to fit in while living in a nightmare and for her need to fit in she was preyed upon. When I tell you I wished death on everyone involved I meant it. But towards the end i was yelling and screaming for her because her rage fueled me. I loved her character and how she grew.
Spade was adorable. He also fell into some bad circumstances but watching his devotion and rage was a balm. I can say he was perfect.
Krowe, ohh man, Krowe. I thought Carly was brilliant for adding his POV. To see what he was thinking before, during, and after was perfection. The amount of times I wanted to throat punch him into another dimension was a lot. I was nervous at first finding out his POV. But the collection of the three was just right.
If you love a dark Halloween novella, this is it. I can't wait to read any other holiday novella she has coming out.
As always, be cautious going into any of her stories because they are dark, but in my opinion so so worth it.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Oh WOW, this turned very dark very quickly, and it's definitely not for the faint of heart!
This was brutal, very detailed, unexpected, unhinged, and dare I say it, even a bit funny.
Gianna wants revenge after a night of terror, and boy does she get it. Together with her partner in crime, who suffered from a somewhat similar experience, she made sure nobody had to go through what they went through ever again!
This is one of those stories that had me on the edge of my seat with my jaw on the floor, like... wtf did I just read?!
It's high on the horror aspect and low on spice but this was so good!
The only thing I have as a remark is that I wish we had gotten a more extensive description of the revenge on all of them. It started really detailed with Krowe and the thing under his bed but the rest felt a teeny tiny bit rushed but still...⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me
Short but not sweet, certainly check the Triggers! A scarecrow, halloween novella that was a quick but dark read. Couldn't put it down!
Gianna encounters Krowe who invites her to the cornfields to a bonfire party with his friends. Tragic and horrific events lead to a true horror show. Dramatic, horrifying revenge and rage lead to death and destruction in the most violent ways.
Horror, gore and ghostly payback. A good novella to pick up when you want a thrilling, blood fest told in a way that made me smile!I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Not quite sure how to review this because i liked it but i also didn’t, if that makes sense.
Definitely read your trigger warnings for this.
It’s a good revenge plot, quite unhinged, but i feel like there could have been so much more story to the revenge part. The first 60-70% of the book is the build-up and the last 30% just flies by so quickly.
I like the story itself though and the whole idea of it.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you @booksirens and Carly Claire.
This was unhinged. Read those trigger warnings. possible spoilers below.
I liked it but as a person who has seen I Spit On Your Grave and Last House on The Left, I think I expected more out the revenge portion of this. Also the fucking ghosts ( literal fucking ghosts) ya lost me there for a moment.
All around I would still recommend for a unhinged read.

⚠️ Heavy Trigger Warning! Do not read without reading the triggers ⚠️
Gianna is new to town and wants to find friends and maybe even start a relationship. She is invited to a party by Krowe and his friend Jackson. Little did she know the party was not what she thought it would be.
This is one of those books that you cheer on the woman because revenge is best served with a friend. Not just any friend but one that understands. One that becomes your ride or die.
That was DARK!! I just wish it would’ve been longer!
Female rage and revenge at its finest though 😛 this is definitely more horror than horror erotica. I would’ve liked just MORE! I would’ve liked to know more about Spade, Spade and Gianna’s connection, and the family of the farmhouse.
Wow...wow...I've been staring off into the distance for awhile, just gathering my thoughts after reading this journey. PLEASE CHECK THE TRIGGERS AND THE FOREWORD! I beg of you.
(I received this as an advanced reader copy for free and my opinion is my own and freely given)
"New Girl" Gianna has moved to this tiny town of Hollow Fields, Kansas with her alcoholic mother. As an introverted, anxious young college girl, she's unexpectedly invited by "Krowe" and his football friends to a Halloween party. Naive, yet excited, she works up her courage to attend without knowing how much this decision will change her life completely.
This is my first ARC read and I went into it expecting, of course, to be disgusted, angry, grossed out, horrified, and all the other emotions related to the trigger warnings. Yet I was excited. The synopsis had me hooked and I was so ready. What I wasn't ready for was the sheer amount of sadness and grief I experienced while reading this.
🖤 𝓻𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀🖤 “Let go, little wraith. Let me love you.”
Two words: Ghost Sex. And revenge is a dish best served BLOODY. This book is DARK and I mean it when I say, CHECK YOUR TRIGGERS because once you feel the direction that the story begins with, its a rollercoaster the spirals downward into a dark abyss. Claire has perfectly written a Hallowern-themed rape/revenge story that keeps you on your toes with elements of campfire horrors, emotional distress, and a triumphant finale that will leave you…
*spoilers*
Gianna is new to town and after a football unknowingly smashes into her face, she becomes the new sight for the popular guy, Krowe who asks if he can take her out after noticing her beauty. Intending on going to a cornfield party, he decides to go through a secured cemetery as a shortcut. It makes her feel nervous until they actually do arrive at the party where she's surrounded by the rest of the football team who are all dressed like dead players alongside Krowe. A party before the event known to them as Hollow Night, an annual tradition of hat has backfired before.
What appears like a nice, comforting night around a bonfire with a few drinks starts to take a turn when Krowe tells the story about a local scarecrow tale. When he's done, Gianna starts to feel weak and vulnerable, passing out on the ground before them. When she becomes conscious again, she awakens to find that the man that promised to keep her safe has fed her virgin body to the rest of the team as a storm approaches. This part may be a little too dark for some readers so please read the triggers before proceeding.
Well, the next day, Krowe’s father gets word that the new girl in town is missing, as her mother is up at the station. He becomes worried because she was supposed to be home by now, thinking that what they did went too far but it's far too late now. Too late that one of their buddies is found tied up like a scarecrow deceased for then to find in her place. Thankfully, someone who has experienced the ritual before finds her the next day and brings her in, knowing that the town likes to protect themselves. But that's when she discovers the true and it's not one she wanted to know.
I won't spoil how it ends but wow! Absolutely shocking. Appalling. And I could not stop reading! A perfect ending to a traumatic story. This is my second read by Claire, my first being 624 which is also a very PITCH DARK story without a HEA, and I have already labeled her as one of my favorite authors of 2025. Looking forward to reading You’re No Saint Nick next.
I received this book and am leaving a voluntary review.
Are you Scared, Krowe? by Carly Claire is a wonderful splatter-punk story about how miscarriages of justice get reconciled. Gianna, the new girl who has come to stay in the infamous Hollow Fields. She meets a handsome young man named Easton “Krowe” Krowataski, the star quarterback for the town’s football team. After a rather elegant courting ritual, Gianna gets invited to Hollow Night by Krowe, and she eagerly jumps in on his invitation. What starts off as a fun night quickly spirals when she gets raped, mutilated, and left for dead by Krowe and his friends. Unfortunately for Krowe, the town has a reputation for cradling the voices of the damned, and fortunately for Gianna, he’s about to join them.
I love Gianna, and I think Spade is a sweetheart. Krowe and the football team got what they deserved, though to be honest, I was a bit disappointed. Surely Claire could’ve done better with graphic descriptions, especially with the gruesome punishments that are clearly necessary for any of the fuckers committed to Hollow Night. True, I valued the justice that Gianna and Spade grasped, but I feel that their murderers’ endings could be a little bloodier. Just a bit.
I would’ve also liked the themes of morality to be more developed. Damnation embracing souls with the same desperation those souls try to scramble away from is wonderfully maddening. Gianna portrays the scorned victim who will do everything it takes to get the vengeance she deserves. However, this terrifying truth gets undercut by a very fast-paced story. I would’ve preferred Krowe’s perspective to be more fleshed out, for him to be given time to feel the loss of his teammates and the dread of his upcoming punishment. And despite Jackson’s cruelty, I liked him, and would’ve loved more of his chaotic energy; despite nearly all of Krowe’s friends being irredeemable pigs, I would’ve wanted Jackson’s sins to be more elaborate and showcase more of his sociopathy. I would’ve appreciated seeing the creative liberties Gianna would’ve taken, as well as the poetry she could have written with their deaths.
There was a lot more potential in this story than I feel Claire has spotlighted. Nevertheless, it was an entertaining read. The characters and themes aligned well, and act as an excellent introduction to the hell that awaits the men (and women) who torture the innocent. As such, I would give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to those who enjoy pitch-black romances, gore, and splatterpunk horror.
This was so different from things I normally read, or have read, even though it's horror, and I'm not even sure exactly how to describe it other than unhinged. The female rage and revenge though *chef's kiss*
There was a decent list of trigger warnings at the start, which they weren't an issue for me and I think it all is so very fictional even things that might have bothered me, didn't. And while things were described & had detail, it wasn't so horribly in depth that it was a problem. This was a super fast read, had I started it a little earlier in the night it definitely would have been a read all at once book. I did keep forgetting these were supposed to be college kids and not high school, so much felt like shitty little town high school antics, where the popular kids and football are everything but still, this town SUCKS and so many of the people that live there deserve nothing but the worst. I had forgotten Spade was dead, and that Gianna was not a high school student at first and was a little grossed out by his antics, then realized that while he's been chilling as a ghost for 20 years, he's not actually a 40 something year old man lusting over a 16 yr old.
It's hard to say much else without giving things away when it's a short story, even if it were longer I'm not sure I can say more than this was a wild ride, I had no idea what to expect but I was not let down by it and the villains here got what they deserved, some of them very perfectly so, and that was satisfying. I have some guys in my past I'd like to return some favors to.

This is not a story that eases you in. Are You Scared, Krowe? opens like a whisper behind your ear and tightens its grip without warning. Carly Claire delivers a novella steeped in fear, fixation, and control-where dread is intimate and safety is an illusion you're meant to lose.
The horror here is personal. It lives in watched moments, in the quiet certainty that someone else is always one step ahead. Violence exists not as spectacle, but as threat-looming, inevitable, and psychologically sharp. Every interaction carries weight, every silence feels deliberate. You are not invited to observe from a distance; you are pulled uncomfortably close.
Erotic tension coils beneath the surface, inseparable from fear. Desire is distorted by power imbalance, by manipulation, by the slow erosion of agency. Nothing is offered freely, and nothing feels clean. Claire understands that the most unsettling horror often comes from wanting what may destroy you.
The pacing is tight, the prose unflinching, and the ending refuses closure. When the final page arrives, it leaves you suspended-unnerved, marked, and questioning why the last line lingers like a bruise.
Trigger Considerations: Violence, death, abuse, rape, explicit sexual content, and strong profanity.
If you’re drawn to horror that breathes close, blurs boundaries, and leaves you unsettled rather than satisfied, Are You Scared, Krowe? will not look away.
Thank you BookSiren for the ARC and thank you to the writer and publishers for all your hard work. This review is voluntary and happily left!
This is definitely one hell of a dark book. I mean before you even get into the book there is a trigger warning page and boy are some downright terrible. I mean I still read it so am I terrible? Nah. I will warn this definitely has death, some rough gore, and rape. There are other bad things involved so if you'd like to know i hope you can look it up. Even with the darkness there is some good in it. I really enjoyed the characters and what happens. I mean who dosent enjoy female rage and a dash of love involved? Also a tiny bit of lore. We all know im a suckered for things like that.
A town built on lies, horrific choices and a scary story. What's really and what isent. Can a story be truth? Oh it certainly can be. What's worse is its not over. Things are still going on and its only getting more depraved and violent. What if from these actions a rage so intense rose and decided it was time to reach a lesson no one would forget? Read this book and find out what happens.
All I can say is this book is dark, twisted and there is some dark sense of humor there in the mix. I finished this pretty much in one sitting as I was unable to stop reading. I needed to know how it ended and the ending! Ahhhhhh! Just you wait.
As a Christian life coach, pastor, cancer motivational speaker, and forensic psychologist, I have a keen interest in genres that explore themes of serial killers and dark psychological thrillers.
This marks my first encounter with the work of author Carly Claire. Readers need to be aware of their triggers, as the novel contains a particularly intense scene that may be distressing. However, if one can navigate through this initial segment, the remainder of the book is undeniably compelling.
It is important to clarify that this is a horror novel rather than a dark romance, although it does contain elements of very mild romantic undertones. Would I recommend this book? Certainly, but only to those with a strong constitution capable of withstanding deeply unsettling narratives. This story does not venture into morally ambiguous territory; it is dark and exceptionally unhinged. While I appreciated the overall quality of the book, I found it necessary to persevere through the more challenging sections. Please be mindful of the potential triggers. Ultimately, the novel excels in character development, plot progression, and writing quality. When the author describes the content as unhinged, she truly means it.
I received an advance review copy at no cost, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thanks to Book Sirens for this book. It was not my usual read and I should have paid close attention to the author's note and content warning, you definitely should if you are considering delving into it. It was a short, but brutal read which was well written. The imagery was off the hook and I had to put it down a few times because of just how vivid those pictures were flashing through my mind. The main issue I had was having to suspend my disbelief, not for the ghostly parts, but for a girl attending a party with just the football team. The football team of which she knew only two of the players and had met them that day. What woman in her right mind would do that? How about run up to one of the guys you've never met and snuggle up to him just to get warm? And then to drink out of an already opened bottle? Perhaps if the character development had been as vividly written as the acts and overall imagery, I would have better understood why she made those questionable choices. If this is your type of genre, I would recommend it. If not, you should probably skip it, as I fear a few nightmares may follow.

This novella has so many triggers and absolutely terrible things happen! Reader beware and check the warnings! Gianna is the main character and is the new girl in Hollow Fields, KS. Hollow Fields has their own long running tradition that surrounds a sacrifice to the scarecrow on Halloween that only the locals understand.
The thing that kept me reading throughout all the horrific things that happened to Gianna was the fact that I knew the situation would likely flip. Gianna gets her chance for justice with the help of some new friends. Which was worse, what happened to Gianna or her revenge? In my opinion, they all got what they deserved, except Gianna. Gianna's revenge couldve been longer and more harsh.
The story comes full circle because it wasn't just the people that were horrible it was the town. A very twisted Halloween novella! It's disturbing that I enjoyed Gianna's wrath. I only wish this was actually longer.
Thank you Carly Claire for tbe opportunity to read this ARC.
This is one of those truly emotional reads that left me both confused and oddly satisfied for the heroine. My first piece of advice—definitely check the author’s trigger warnings. Even though I was aware of the violent nature of the story, I still found myself shocked, angry, and emotionally invested in every moment. That said, I absolutely love when vengeance wins in stories like this, and this one delivered that perfectly.
For a short read, it was impressively well crafted. There were certainly moments and scenarios that could have been explored further, but what was covered felt complete and satisfying for its length.
This standalone, “creepy, violent Halloween” story truly pushes boundaries, balancing darkness and justice in equal measure. It’s a powerful tale of good prevailing over evil—and in the most unexpected way, it manages to deliver a happily ever after unlike any I’ve ever read before.
Highly recommended for readers who enjoy dark, emotionally charged stories where vengeance, resilience, and justice all find their place in the end.
Good lord what a fever dream this book is! It was disgusting and vile and painful to read and filled with all the bad things society can offer and I LOVED it. Give me more! If you have a book with a list of triggers I better see and feel each one and “Are you scared Krowe?” Serves you up all the triggers in graphic detail
This book gives us Gianna, new to town and just trying to make a friend. The minute you see the football star take her under his wing you just know there are bad intentions ahead. And boy do you get a detailed description of all the worst things your nightmares ca give you.
I was surprised at the twist, and grew to love it and really see no other way to go in which reading such a vile testament to humanity could serve up the vengeance our dear Gianna deserved.
One page about 95 pages in had Easton’s name as Ethan I believe and that typo should be adjusted but otherwise this story is exactly what I want in my twisted horror! Bravo! Thank you for the advanced readers copy, it was my pleasure to read!
Heed the trigger warnings, babes — they’re there for a reason.
I’m usually pretty good with tough scenes, but there is one moment in this book that genuinely stopped me in my tracks. I had to close the Kindle, stare at the wall, and consider whether I wanted to keep going. That scene alone almost made me tap out.
I pushed through, though… and honestly? I walked away feeling a bit meh. The revenge angle was fantastic — truly the shining star of the whole story — but everything around it felt like it was trying a little too hard. The graphic moments didn’t always feel purposeful; sometimes it was just gore for gore’s sake, and then the plot took a turn into Slightly Silly Territory™. By the time I hit the ending, it felt rushed, like someone suddenly remembered there was a deadline.
There was so much potential here, but it just didn’t land for me. A bit more character development, a bit more time to breathe, and I think it could have hit harder. As it stands, it was fine… but definitely not a new favourite.
O. M. G. Besties… "Are You Scared, Krowe?" is the kind of horror read that makes you clutch your Kindle like a weapon and question every small-town scarecrow you’ve ever seen. 😳 This is not a romance—it’s erotic horror soaked in pain, vengeance, and feminine rage. Gianna’s story is brutal. The first few chapters? Absolutely gut-wrenching. What she endures broke me… but what she does afterward? Chef’s kiss levels of unhinged justice. Krowe may have been one of her monsters, but Hollow Fields births new nightmares... and unexpected saviors. The writing is cinematic, disturbing, and addictive in that “I shouldn’t watch but can’t look away” way. And that last chapter?! 👀 WHOA besties, my soul left my Kindle for a moment. Carly Claire didn’t just write horror—she served a reckoning. ⚠️READ THE TWs!
My Ratings: ⭐ 5/5 ▪︎ 🥵 3/5

This book left me asking “What in the HELL, did I just read?” And to me that’s a sign of a good book. This is my first book by Carly Claire and I was fully invested from the very start. Gianna is the new girl in town. In a bit of a “bump” with Krowe, she’s invited to a Halloween Party. She’s been living there for a few months decides to go because, it wouldn’t hurt to meet some people her own age. What starts as what seems to be typical night with the local kids ends up being way more than she’s bargained for. When I tell you I had the hardest time putting this book down, I absolutely did. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything quite like this. It definitely had me stopping and rereading certain parts. I was pleasantly surprised with this one.
Make sure you to check the trigger warnings before you read this one.
I received this copy as an ARC from BookSirens. Thank you to BookSirens and the author Carly Claire.
This book is unsettling, fast-moving, and deeply atmospheric, blending teen horror, trauma, and folklore into something that feels both grounded and mythic. It’s a story about what happens when a community protects the wrong people — and what grows in the cracks left behind. Gianna’s journey from isolated new girl to someone forced to overcome the worst night of her life is gripping and painful, but the novel never lets her stay a victim. As the truth is buried by the town and the boys who hurt her are shielded from consequences, the darkness in the fields begins to shift in her favor. What follows is a tense, eerie unraveling where fear changes sides, and Gianna ultimately gets the perfect revenge for what was done to her — the kind that feels both inevitable and deeply satisfying without needing every detail spelled out. Are You Scared, Krowe? is the kind of horror story that lingers, equal parts raw emotion and folklore unearthed from the soil.
