The enemy I swore I’d hate became the man I couldn’t live without. Then he betrayed me, too.
Turns out I might have been sleeping under the same roof as my father’s assassin.
Now I'm trapped in a crater that won't let me leave, the man I'm furious at is off fighting a war I can't join, and my favorite cousin is doing something spectacularly dangerous that I'm choosing not to think about.
The Protectorate crown is mine to carry. So I'll run a city under siege, negotiate alliances with creatures that could crush me in one hand, and try not to miss a man who has given me every reason to stay angry.
But the crater has secrets. Someone inside these unscalable walls wants me dead. And the truth about my father's murder is closer than I ever wanted it to be. One wrong move and I lose everything–including him.
Falling for my enemy was the risk I never wanted to take. Trusting him again might be the one that destroys me.
A Dagger of Fire and Fate is the final book in the second duology of the A Curse of Silver Secrets and Cruel Shadows series. It’s a slowburn, enemies-to-lovers romantasy where banter is a love language and secrets can kill. The series starts out hot and only gets hotter as the mystery grows.
In the War of the Clans, which side will you choose? #ProtectorateVSBloodBrotherhood
The political intrigue in this series continues to hold my interest. Plus, the tension between Allie and Ryker with their arranged marriage is absolutely sizzling. They both are questioning everyone they ever thought they trusted their lives with, so, in turn, they are questioning if they can trust someone they just met with all the love and feelings they are feeling.
Minor Spoilers Ahead:
Allie is still squirreled away in Ryker's snowing Kingdom and talking with her Vegheara cousins through a portal to try and determine who their Uncle Sylas worked with to Orchestrate the coup on the Protectorate Crown. In addition to finding this out, Allie wants to find in particular who murdered her father, the King, on sacred grounds during her cousin Evie's failed marriage ceremony.
Ryker begrudgingly let Allie come and stay with him in the snowy crater Kingdom, but he's slowly starting to realize that Allie is just as honorable and protective of her people as he is of his own. They have more in common than they have differences. Plus, they're both mutually attracted to each other, which works out because the Council has determined that each of the Vegheara cousins shall be betrothed to one of the leaders in the Blood Brotherhood Clan.
Ryker and Allie both will die for anyone they call family; however, someone close to them has been orchestrating attacks on their people and Kingdoms. So, trying to fall in love and trust someone who was very recently an enemy is challenging.
Will they be able to put their former mistrust aside, and trust each other?! I'm soooo invested in this series, I can't wait for the next one!

This is the conclusion to Allie and Ryker’s duology and it was nonstop action and mystery!
There’s a traitor in the mix, but who? And honestly, you’re kept on the edge of your seat trying to figure out who it is.
Allie and Ryker are fighting a war on 2 fronts. Ryker is bound by duty to aid The Blood Brotherhood in their war against the Serpents but at home, the northern clans are invading due to their greed to for more magic that Ryker can’t and won’t provide. But information seems to be leaking out on all ends but who the mole is, they can’t figure out.
On top of it, Allie and Ryker aren’t on talking terms after the revelation at the end of book 1, but still must maintain a public picture that they stand as one. And while they do agree on their stance in this war, can Allie truly trust Ryker when her father’s murderer is living in his clan right under their noses. The lies caught up to Ryker and she no longer believes they’re on the same team, even if they’re on the same side.
An ally comes when Allie least expects it though and not only brings a touch of home to her, but help in figuring out what’s truly happening in the Protectorate and how she can take back her clan, even when she doesn’t feel worthy of being its heir anymore. Her cousin Dax though will not let her feel an ounce less than what she is: a true Queen 👸
This duology runs parallel timeline wise with Evie & Zandyr’s duology and we get to have Allie’s perspective to the shock of Evie’s wedding to Zandyr (news flash: didn’t go well 🤣).
While some questions may get answered, we still have many more to go and the ending of this book throws the door open even more on who is truly behind all that’s happening in the clans. A shadow that’s pulling all the strings, which I’m going to assume will be dug into even more in the next duology.
Speaking of next duology: we’re going to dive into Dax & Elysia’s story. I can already hear the banter now 🤣 these 2 haven’t even physically met yet and I’m already all for them! And I have many many questions about Dax that are brought up in this book but never answered.
There was a liiitle bit of spice 🌶️ this book but I was wanting more ☹️ considering the fantasies both Allie and Ryker have about each other, I wanted to see that 😂
But what lacked in spice, I really enjoyed their true relationship building this book. While they aren’t perfect with it, they actually do COMMUNICATE and believe that fate may pick someone for you, but it’s not something that’s instantaneous. It’s something you have to choose and build towards. I liked that. It wasn’t just instant. They built a true partnership throughout this duology.
Can’t wait for the next duology of this series!! 😊😊
4.5⭐️ This series is just so addicting. I love the journey of Allie and Ryker's story. They are so alike in their duties and so good together.
The pacing of this book was perfect. I had no idea who the traitor was so that twist SHOCKED me. The war parts were a little lacking of detail and seemed to end confusingly fast, but that's better than them dragging on.
The star of this book was Dax. Safe to say I cannot wait for his story next!
This is my favorite book series and the second duology in this world. I cried, I laughed, I shivered, I was frustrated, but through most of it, I was at the edge of my seat trying to figure out every mystery and plot twist.
I'm the biggest fan, and I can't wait for the fifth book! 🥹🙏🏻🩷
I find it astounding that the booktok/bookstagram community haven’t picked up Vera Raye’s books.
I am blown away by the authors ability to write the same premise (arranged marriage of enemy clans) in a completely fresh way - Allie and Ryker’s story is so different from the opening duology for Evie and Zandyr’s story.
I often find that when I’m reading a series that focuses on a new couple that I’m consumed by the new couple’s story, and while I absolutely adore Allie and Ryker, they didn’t replace the love I have for Evie and Zandyr, I love both duologies equally as they’re so brilliant in their own right.
Where Evie is soft and patient, Allie is chaos and passionate. Zandyr stoic and tough whereas Ryker as openly as he can - both couples are the perfect opposite of each other and come together so beautifully.
I absolutely loved the different POV for the serpent battle, seeing Ryker’s perspective and how he dealt with the loss of Geryll was devastating but overcame his grief to win the battle and return back to Solkar’s Reach.
I enjoyed seeing Allie find her place in the Crater and earning Ryker’s people’s respect was brilliant. Bringing the people and trolls together was genius and reading about Allie’s attempts to communicate with the Trolls had me chuckling.
The traitor element was blowing my mind, the last 15% of the book was absolutely insane, a final battle that truly delivered. The prologue delivered in keeping me second guessing Allie’s motives to then see what actually played out was pure GENIUS on Vera’s part!
The only criticism I have is that I wish we had more time with Ryker and Allie together, I wanted to see more of their relationship, more spice, more affection, more declarations of love. Just more of them ❤️
I cannot wait for Dax and Elysia’s duo!

The Curse of Silver Secrets and Cruel Shadows has been a wild ride, thus far. While literally book 4 in the series, A Dagger of Fire and Fate is book 2 in the second duology of this series. Vera Raye has written a beautiful story of revenge, true enemies to lovers, and learning to trust those you were raised to hate. The last book introduced us to our MCs and their fragile relationship and ended with readers in disbelief and needing book 2. Finally it is here and this book showcases how well Vera is able to take everything from book 1 and amplify it. I loved the maturity our MCs show throughout their story, which provided depth and complexity to this story line.
Allie finds herself struggling. She knows she should hate the man she is falling for, but just can’t bring herself to do so. While trying to take back her throne, her struggle lies in being the leader her people need her to be and the desire to follow her heart. Her willingness to sacrifice her own happiness for the people who look to her for guidance and stability just proves how mature she is and the type of person she is. My heart broke for her at times as well as soared for the amazing feminine power she showed. I will say there were times I wanted to see her rage towards the MMC, as he would deserve it, but Vera keeps her true to character throughout this story and that just isn’t her.
Ryker left me with my jaw on the floor after the last book. You can easily see how much he struggles with the pull he has towards leading his people and the desire he feels for Allie. He is able to separate the two, however, I loved seeing him learn how to blend these two parts of his world together by the end of the book. Telling Allie the truth shows the growth he has gone through and also his maturity on realizing he couldn’t keep this from her anymore. I have really enjoyed seeing him grow throughout these two books and am excited to see where the next books take him.
Vera once again provides a beautiful romance that while has a happy ending, leaves room for readers to get more in the future. Just as she did with the couple from the first duology within this series, she does with Allie and Ryker. I cannot wait to see how this world expands and what lies in wait for our next couple. The hints that Vera has laid out for us already have been chomping at the bit to read book 5. She has done a wonderful job in keeping the overall plot intact and moving through all 4 books, while giving us MCs that drive the storyline yet provide their own story within the story.
As always, review any author notes before reading.

“A Dagger of Fire and Fate” by Vera Raye Review Rating: 4.5/5 Spice: 2/5 Review (only slightly spoilers): I love love love Ryker and Allie so much!! Ugh the first book was fantastic but the second? Absolutely incredible. I love each character individually and I love how unique their love story is, in comparison to Evie and Zandyr. Where Evie and Zandyr are passion and intense first love, Allie and Ryker are deep longing, duty and trust. I love both equally, but Allie and Ryker just something special. I love how mature they both are but how deeply they love each other. They never lose sight of their goals when falling in love and I love that so much! Their duty and their dedication always comes first and that creates such fantastic tension. They both want to fall in love and completely disregard the world, but they also know they need to be the fearless leaders that their people need. Hence, tension and drama! Oooh the tension was so spicy, I loved it. Though at some points, I really wished Allie would be mean AF to Ryker for not telling her the whole truth, but I understand that that’s not her character. They’re both logical and tactical to a fault. Those faults will then have to be dealt with accordingly. I love love love logical characters whose actions make sense and are super grounded, so I am so biased about this tension and drama. Speaking of drama, oh my gosh is this book chock-full of drama. The tension, the betrayals, the heartbreaking death?! I was reading this book at top speed with how dramatic and intense it was! Honestly, clear your day to read this because you won’t want to put it down. My only complaint was how long it took Ryker and Allie to figure out what was wrong with Solkar’s Reach/the crater. I felt like it was kind of obvious, but there was also a lot going on with Ryker and Allie during this book, so they get a pass in my book. Also the cliffhanger!!! Allie and Ryker’s character growth and romance is set and done at this point, but it still feels like a cliffhanger because the whole series is not complete. I’m desperate to know who is hunting the Protectorate siblings and who orchestrated the attack on Solkar’s Reach/the crater!! I’m dying to read the next book in the series and I’m so happy we get to see Dax and Elysia (the Viper)’s love story next! Disclaimer: I received this book as a free eARC from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own. No AI was used to read/review this book and no AI was used to write this review. Thank you to the other for giving me the privilege of reading this book early!
I am absolutely obsessed with this book and the others in the series.
Dagger of Fire and Fate completes the main story of Allie and Ryker. It is the 4th book in The Curse of Silver Secrets and Cruel Shadows series and the end of the second duology of this series. Each duology follows a different couple - one of the Protectorate Clan cousins and the member of the Blood Brotherhood they are to marry. I love how each couple's story cleverly feeds into a main over arching story for the whole series. It really adds to the depth of world building and history of the world. There are so many secrets to be unravelled and so much suspense surrounding the identity of who is after the Protectorate cousins.
One of the things I love most about Vera's books is how emotional it makes you feel. I felt every emotion that Vera Raye wrote! I don't know how she does it but she writes emotions that you feel viscerally. Like your heart has been stomped all over. It's one of my favourite parts of her writing.
This book has so much drama, tension, betrayal and heartache right from the start. There is a lot going on and battles being faught on different fronts. Something strange is happening with the magic in Solkar's Reach, making things unpredictable while putting at risk the safety of the people in the crater. Trouble is coming from the Northern Clans but there is also war in the South against enemy clans. Both Allie and Ryker have impossible decisions to make while navigating the secrets they are keeping and their feelings for each other.
This story follows a parallel timeline to the first duology in the series. Being able to see Allie and Dax's reaction to Evie's wedding was brilliant! It brought back all the feelings I felt when I read it in book 1 😭! I loved being able to see the war/battle in the South from Ryker's pov.
I loved the way Allie and Ryker's relationship develops - I love their chemistry and love for each other. We get to see how they are both torn between being together and wanting to shut out the rest of the world, yet both so aware of their duty and responsibility to their clans and their people. The dual pov really helps to give a deeper insight into both Allie and Ryker's personalities. I loved the dining room scene! ❤️
Dax is a fantastic character and a great addition to this book. I love his devotion to Allie and the dynamics between him and the other characters throughout the story. This book sets up Dax's story with The Viper perfectly - this will be the next duology.
This was an absolutely fantastic read and I cannot wait for the next book. While the ending to this book rounded up Allie and Ryker's romantic story, we were left with a great ending for their story to continue with8n the series as a whole. I can't wait to see how this all unfolds.
Huge thank you to Vera Raye for the opportunity to read an advanced reader copy, it was an absolute privilege. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own and honestly/voluntarily given.
Thank you for the ARC! This review will be very mixed. Some parts of this book were 5⭐️ while others were more 3⭐️ After a good first 1/3 of the book, the MCs were separated for like 200 pages or so, which I didn’t like. Separation is one of my least favorite tropes in books so that might just be a me problem. Then the last 1/3 was really good and I couldn’t put it down.
I thought this was a very plot-driven book and delivered in that way. It was action-packed with a strong story. I felt the relational aspects of the book were lacking, though. Some of it was due to the separation but a lot of it was from Allie being too hard-headed in my opinion. She’s like, “I would’ve done the same exact thing that you did but I’ve still lost all trust in you now.” That was frustrating. I don’t like when a female character has to be stubborn to a fault to look strong and what not. And I don’t feel like the MCs really came together and had a declaration of love between them. I didn’t feel a true resolution, like their issues were still not resolved by the end of their story it didn’t feel like. I kept waiting for it and it just didn’t come. Like they were getting along and were definitely a team, but I felt like the relationship was devoid of deep feelings🤷🏼♀️
Having said all that, I still really liked this book because of the storyline. The twist about 75% in completely shocked me and I did not see it coming. The trolls were great and loved seeing them more. I can’t wait for Dax’s story next.
Okay….WOW! ⭐️- 4.5/5 only because there are still so many questions to be answered - but I understand that there are 6 more books to come! *Special Note: I feel like this book is closer to a 5 than a 4 so I went up with my rating for the website* 🌶️- 3/5 not a LOT but it’s quality. And I’d prefer quality over quantity because the spice is nice but NOT THE POINT!! Ugh I love them and love their romance but the plot? Oh lord the plot is so juicy….
I will be forever grateful to Vera Raye for keeping this series to multiple duologies instead of breaking them up into 4 books per pair. There is so much to explore and devouring the books in pairs keeps me interested without dragging it out for a money grab. (Love you, Vera!)
Having the story overlap so easily with the first duology while expanding can be SO difficult but it’s done in a way that emphasizes that this IS a different story and - surprise surprise - these characters still have their own influence and experiences that are important.
I can’t wait to re-read all these books once the full series is out from start to finish!
Wow! This was another great book in this series. Book 4 picks up right where 3 ended, so make sure you have read it first (it's great too). So far, each set of characters has gotten a two-book story. The over arcing plot has a lot of moving parts. Characters, politics, clan wars, spies, secrets and lots of intrigue and angst. The story from books 1 & 2 was happening at the same time as books 3 &4, so it was fun to read (and reread). More than one event happened each set of books, so I already knew how they were going to end, but a different perspective was unique. Allie and Ryker's story brought a unique perspective to being "fated". I liked the idea that they created/forged their relationship into a strong partnership, thus being recognized by "the fates" rather than seeing each other and just "knowing". I won't give spoilers, because there are too many. Suffice to say, this was a wonderful read and I am anxiously awaiting the next in the series. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my review.
Oh wow, this was an absolutely storming read, so very good. I’ve been waiting ages for this book and it doesn’t disappoint. A terrific follow up to a Dagger of Ice & Intrigue. We now find Ryker and Allie becoming more embroiled and deeply involved in events as the plot progresses and strange events start happening both within the crater and the wider world outside. Meanwhile Ryker and Allie’s relationship is continuing to develop, although with two similar personalities with such strong sense of duty and responsibility, there’s obviously some major head butting going on between them as they learn more about each other and their secrets. There are dramatic, heart pounding battles with shocking, surprising betrayals and devasting losses – I went through so many emotions in this book. Heart in my mouth, sobbing, shouting and cheering out loud at different points. I’m so invested in this world! I absolutely love the way Vera has woven this story with believable characters, strong plot and a fascinating world.
What amazing writing! Finishing this book made me want to go back and start them all over again from the very beginning! What an incredible setting, and characters that you can’t get enough of. This is my favorite FMC! She is everything and made me love this story so much more. I love the balance of these couples and their paths. It’s world building and spice. This has excellent tension and so much history, and wow the action! Love the twists and surprises. Loved the perspective given in this book about the entire group so far. It’s addicting in the best way to love a series like this! I’m grateful that Vera Raye has released these books in a time frame that is perfect to keep picking up the story. Start from the beginning and enjoy the burn that makes you want more! Excellent spice, seriously can’t get enough!! I can’t wait for what happens next.
I received a free copy of this book via BookFunnel and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I think this suffered from following a duology that I absolutely adored.
The first couple from A Crown of Tears and Treason and A Crown of Victory and Vengeance had me completely invested, so I naturally compared this pair to them. While I enjoyed these characters, I never connected with them on quite the same level.
That said, I still had a great time reading. The writing is engaging, the world continues to expand in interesting ways, and I really love the author’s decision to follow different couples while keeping everything connected.
This couple just didn’t capture my heart the way the first one did—but that’s a high standard to live up to. Overall, it was a fun, well-written continuation of a series I genuinely enjoy, and I’m already looking forward to the next installment.
“The enemy I swore I’d hate became the man I couldn’t live without.” This is part 4 of The Curse of Silver Secrets and Cruel Shadows series and the final book in the second duology. Allie grapples between the solidarity with her family and her feelings for Ryker in this slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romantasy full of action and secrets. I don’t want to give any spoilers but know that their banter is classic, their chemistry is magnetic, and the tension between them thick. Trust and duty is questioned, love tries to reign over betrayal, and the mystery only gets deeper if who is hunting the siblings and why. Thanks to the author for the eARC,
This book was even more action packed than the first or the first duology. I al definitely loving these interconnected duologies and I love how little by little we are putting together more clues about the big war. Allie is still trying to find herself again but after betrayal and betrayal, she seems to get stronger and better as a leader. Also praise to her for being a grown up and not easily forgiving to the commander. I liked seeing more sides of Ryker, as always, but now he goes through great grief, and surprise, more betrayal. I was happy to see more answers and that epilogue was gold. I can’t imagine Dax even next but oh will I read that
This was the conclusion to Ryker and Allie's duology and it's action packed, beginning to end. This is a plot driven read with little spice. However, I loved that this is told in dual POVs so that we really get Ryker's thinking. He was fab. I found Allie a bit too stubborn ;) These two worked at communicating with each other, which I also loved, and they worked at being together, not just accepting fate's decree. Expect to be fully engaged when you dive into this exciting read, and with the unanswered questions and intro to Viper and Dax's story, definitely be wanting more. Good fun!
Rating 3.5. I listened to the audio version and didn’t like Ryker’s voice nor his personifications of the other voices. Allie’s was okay. The first half of the book was a bit slow for me and repeated some of the events of the previous books albeit in Allie and Ryker’s perspective. 10 hours into the audiobook did I feel like the action FINALLY picked up (with 5-6 hours to go). The first 10 hours felt like long monologues and exposition. Once the action picked up, it was a much more enjoyable listen.
The ever-growing plot to take down The Protectorate just keeps growing and growing. Some questions were answered, but other questions just led to more questions. Who are the masked people? Where did they come from? Who is this Heir that feels he's been slighted?
I love that this series also comes in different duologies for each member of the Protectorate family. If you enjoyed The Bridge Kingdom series by Danielle L. Jensen, then you'll also probably enjoy this series. I can't wait for the next duology (my guess is Dax and The Viper).
This series does not disappoint! I’m not a fan of writers retelling the same scene or plot point multiple times from the varying characters but with the shift in narratives for books 3 & 4 it made sense. I also appreciated that book four picked up right where book 3 left off. The banter between the Captain and the Huntress is some of the best I’ve read. I did not see the betrayal coming in this book and to the length of how deep it went! I can’t wait to see what the next book as in store and hope that we to a point where all of the primary characters are together.
I’m lucky enough to be on Vera Raye’s ARC team and received an advance copy of A Dagger of Fire and Fate. From the moment I started reading, I was hooked. I found myself picking it up every chance I got because I juuust could not put it down.
One of my favorite parts of this book was the dual POV. It gave so much insight into Ryker’s character and added depth to the story. I hope the next duology is set up the same way!
I was practically on the edge of my seat waiting for Allie and Dax’s reactions to Evie’s wedding, and the payoff was absolutely worth it. And that dining room scene... because it always comes back to the dining room... was pure chef’s kiss perfection. Seeing Dax and Allie realize that they're best friends...I almost cried!
I also loved that this story shares a timeline with the first two books. Seeing the cousins’ perspectives and reactions to key moments made the world feel even richer and more connected.
The ending wrapped up Allie and Ryker’s story beautifully while still making it clear that there’s more to come. And the setup for Dax’s story with the Viper? Absolutely amaaazing! This book did an excellent job of making readers fall in love with Dax and leaving us desperate for more. I cannot wait to read what happens next when the Viper catches up with Dax!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I really enjoyed this second book in the second duology of this series. The overarching story is excellent. I really love an heroine coming into her powers and a man who stands by her while she does it. I can' wait for the next duology.
Honestly each book feels like it is even better than the last! I can't get enough of this serious and am obsessed with the way the author has written this serious!
