This is a great tool for teaching kids to think and practice a lot of phonics in the process. They really learned great vocabulary too. They collaborated and learned from each other better than I could have taught them. They learned a lot of words that are simple but usually only known to native English speakers. Each rung on the ladder gives them an action to do to the word they just discovered. It adds, deletes phonemes and plays with sounds, rhymes, and gives clues to make new words. It is challenging as it goes up.

I love this book. Great warm-up in the morning before our lessons. Best thing is my daughter loves doing them, and she doesn't even realize it's helping with her reading, vocabulary, and spelling.

I highly recommend this book to not only homeschoolers but also for those in public school to supplement lessons. These word puzzles are much more effective though with active involvement from the parent and not just given as "busy work".
