Every Single Vow

Rate this book
Every Single Vow is a small town, childhood friends to lovers, marriage of convenience, cowboy romance.

I was ten years old when I met Cooper Mayson. Thirteen when he threw his first punch for me. Eighteen when my world crumbled beneath my feet and he promised he'd always take care of me. He was my constant. But with a last name like Sterling, and the tarnished reputation that came along with it, I've always kept him at arm's length. He was the golden boy with a loving family, and a ranch with a polished legacy. I was the girl with an absent mother, a father in prison, and a destination for nowhere. But now I was staring at a stranger. One that looked just like me. A little sister I knew nothing about. A child who had nowhere to go. I couldn't let her be another face lost in the system. But no judge in this town would give a child to me with my last name. It was hopeless. Until my best friend made me an offer. To give me his. Sounds simple enough. A temporary marriage so I can gain fully custody, then have an amicable divorce. Problem is, I've been in love with my best friend since I was ten years old. And after only two weeks of being a Mayson, I realize, this marriage might not be as fake as I thought. Behind closed doors the act doesn't end. Every kiss pulls me deeper; every whisper heals my heart. It almost makes me believe I'm good enough for him. But if there's once soul in this world that I refuse to taint, it's Cooper Mayson's.

Every Single Vow is book two of the Every Single Series. It can be read as a standalone. No cheating and a guaranteed HEA.

SPOILER WARNING!!!

The childhood to lovers trope is one of my favorites if it is done right - which unfortunately it was not the case here because even though I enjoyed the story in itself, the fact that they were with others up until they went into the fake marriage thing, ruined it for me. For me, this trope in order to work should have the MCs experiencing all their firsts together - not with OP. We are told that they are "soulmates" (MCs words, not mine) and that they have loved each other from the beginning but they had to wait until age 29 to get together while all these years they both slept around with OP? Yeah, no.

PLOT:

So MCs met at age 10. It is never I think specified but I believe they are the same age or MMC is a year or two older. FMC came from an abusive home. Her mother left her with her abusive & drunk father when she was young and never came back for her. Most times, she was starving to death and it is in one of these times when she had not eaten for hours or days that she meets the MMC who gives her his bag of potato chips and they become BFFs, inseparable and each other's person.

At age 16, MMC loses his virginity to another girl and FMC is hurt (he thought she had given it to someone else and when they talk about it in the present, he doesn't even apologize or feel bad about it but just laughs it off.) At HS graduation, MMC takes another girl to the prom and so on. While it is not delved into, FMC we are told was not celibate either as she sometimes took men home for sex. MMC said that every time he saw FMC leaving the Bar with someone else, he would get drunk and pick up a woman for a night of sex to forget FMC was having sex with someone else but it was never anything serious with anyone else because he always knew since he was a little kid that FMC was his end game.

So in the present, FMC is 29 years old now and she finds out she has a 12 year old sister through her Mother that she didn't know about and that her Mom died. In order to gain custody of the poor abused kid, she has to show stability and thereby the MCs agree to go into a fake marriage - only for MMC it is not going to be fake as he is tired of waiting and time for him to make her his permanently. So at about 50-60%, they exchange ILY's, have sex and are together. (The sex scenes BTW are more horny than loving & deep which in this instance was required so we just basically get a little pump & dump with no foreplay or anything.😫)

The problem here is that while there are elements for it to have been a truly nice fictional romance, it was dumped down by the lack of chemistry and character development. Had there been a slow build of tension & lust from platonic friends to lovers, then the whole plot would make more sense and be more enjoyable as the MCs were good together once they got together. However, as we never get any insight of their feelings when they were young or pre-fake marriage, it became too "insta love" for me and lost it's appeal.

I did like though that once they got married which was at 15% or so, MMC was very protective, possessive, jealous and all in with FMC. He had no doubts that FMC was his forever and I loved his relationship with the kid/sister. They were awesome together. His family also was supportive & loving towards FMC & the kid which was heartwarming to see their acceptance and affection for them.

There's also a little suspense close to the end which I could have done without because I am not a fan of domestic violence - not in real life or in fictional. In this case, FMC kept getting punched and hit in the face and body by her Father. She was his punching bag and each time I had to read it, it sickened me.

So all in all, it is not a bad read. There are elements that I liked as I mentioned above and others that I did not. My only gripe is with the whole sleeping around for years and not giving any of their firsts to one another. That's what ruined the whole thing.

Safety:

NO OP drama
No cheating
No virgins
No intimate scenes with others
Neither MC celibate before they entered into the fake marriage deal
No real mentions of OP other than that they had sex with OP
HEA with another marriage renewal but no epilogue into the future and no kids (especially as they were not using condoms).

"I spent all night thinking about this. If this was my only chance to be her husband, I was going to be the best one she ever had."

✨My first 5 star of the year✨

I ate this one up. The adoption/caretaker trope is always a favorite, and I can take or leave the friends to lovers trope, but I really liked it here. It was clear these two were endgame even from the book before this one, they just needed something to help them cross that line, and the surprise sister was it.

Each of them had been with others over the years, but the story made it clear that was few and far between, even if they each mistakenly thought it was happening with the other one far more often.

I love how devoted they were to each other, and how the MMC was protective of her from the moment they became friends at 10 years old. He saw the opportunity to marry her and took it, knowing full well it would be a real marriage to him for as long as it lasted. Ugh, my heart.

Oh and if you like reading the "my wife" line as much as I do, just know this book has it in abundance. From the moment they're married, the MMC slips it into every conversation he can, and he actually means it. 🥰

I still love all the side characters in this series. I can't wait for more books because I'm dying to read their stories.

A little drama at the end that goes into darker territory and ngl I ate that up too. I can't wait for Ryder's story tbh, that man will go the distance for his family.

Tiny bit of OM drama, but she's never interested in him. No third act breakup. No babies or pregnancies for the MCs, but they're also not using condoms and no talk of birth control is ever had (in this or the previous book).

"A swift pang hits my chest. The look in her eyes, the coolness in her tone. She’s got the act down. The mask in place. I would know. I’ve been wearing it for years. But the broken can always recognize the broken and my heart nearly cracks down the middle when I realize what I’m looking at. A mirror."

Omg this book! Cooper and Dakota are everything! I love this book so much. Cooper is too tier book boy material and Dakota is the sweetest thing even after everything she’s been through. It took me less than 24 hours to read it and it will be living rent free in my head for along time.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I was so ready for Cooper and Dakota’s story. I love seeing how a relationship starts and grows and wow did this one yank at my heart. Cooper was so patient, caring and protective when it came to Dakota from their first meeting at 10 years old to now.

Dakota had a tough life her mom left her with her dad that was not fit to be a dad. The things he put her through had my heart breaking. The day Cooper saw Dakota in the gas station and showed her kindness started to heal my broken heart. Knowing her dad is in prison and cannot hurt her anymore put my mind at ease.

Cooper has always been there to protect her. When a surprise little sister shows up on Dakota’s doorstep he sees his opportunity to make Dakota his. Now he just has to convince her it is just not pretend for him but has always been real.

I adore Dakota and Cooper they have been friends since they were little. We get to see them grow up and what they all been have been through. I loved seeing everything that Cooper did for Dakota. The secret that comes out is something I would have never expected that but heck yeah, I get it and I’m all for it. I’d be on the Mayson family team any day protecting their family and friends.

I absolutely loved Dakota and Cooper and getting their story. With the ending of this one I really want to know more about Laiken and Parker. Really what is going on there and why is Laiken so furious with Parker. I’m telling you I have a feeling this one is going to be one heck of a long 8 second ride with these two.

A few of my favorite quotes (ok maybe quite a few):

“I hate you sometimes,” I hiss as I push at his chest. He chuckles. “Lies. You love me.” More than anything.

“I hate you sometimes,” I hiss as I push at his chest. He chuckles. “Lies. You love me.” More than anything. “Dream on,” I scoff.

“It must be exhausting,” his voice is almost a whisper, his lips moving slow and steady. The bluest eyes I’ve seen to this day roam over my face, pausing to meet my gaze before he inches closer. His hard chest presses against mine, before he glides his thumb down the column of my throat. “Walking around every single day pretending you don’t love me just as much as I love you.”

“I love you, Kota. You’re my person. The first thing I think about when I wake up and the last thing I think of when I go to bed. I’ve loved you for over half of my life and we both know what this is.”

Dakota wasn’t going to like what I had planned for her, but if she gave me any lip, I’d just kiss her until she agreed. End of story.

“You’ve always been my hero, Coop.” “And you’ve always been my queen of chaos.”

All I can say after reading this story….. I want my own Cooper!

I absolutely loved Cooper Mayson and Dakota (Kota) Sterling! They are childhood friends and their feelings for each other deepened over the years – both hiding their true feelings from each other! Agh! Ya’ll we know that they are to be together, heck even Cooper does, but darn it all anyway it takes Kota forever to come around!

Even with all the twists and turns life kept tossing Kota, Cooper was always there, always had her back. Can we all just swoon? I mean seriously?! Between her father’s reputation, getting a sister, getting a stalker, being taken (and by who!!!), getting married – I was glad she had Cooper and the whole Mayson family by her side!

AND the little twist that gets dropped in the end – SAY WHAT? Totally did not see that one coming! Cannot wait for book three - Laiken and Parker’s story. Can we have it now?

Two of my favorite lines:

Cooper and Kota - “You’ve always been my hero, Coop.” “And you’ve always been my queen of chaos.”

Cooper - “Loving you is the easiest thing I’ve ever done, Kota. I’ve been doing it since I was a kid.”

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

GIRL!!!!  When I got this book I was hella mad I was in vacation and had to wait a few days.  Needless to say when I got home I sat and devoured this book.

I loved this family when we met them in Ivy and Maddox book but LAWD was  I wanting to know about Cooper and Dakota.  This book did NOT disappoint.  *Fans Self* Cooper is everything you want for a best friend but also a fake or not so fake husband.

This story throws a few plot twists that had me going...oh snap but the main focus is the love Cooper and Birdie have for each other with out ever admitting that love.  When they do admit it, thanks to a little bet between Cooper and Ari, its all ON!!

I was al excited for all this book contained from the love, friendship, family, and shocks that SJ Loves to throw your way in her stories.  But I am so excited to see about Laiken and the bull rider.  Things are going to be WILD!!

Arc Review: The book is wonderful! It follows Dakota and Cooper, who are childhood friends whose feelings for each other deepen over the years. Yet, they hide their love—because Dakota worried her father's reputation might taint Cooper, and Cooper because he patiently waits for her to lower her emotional walls so they can find happiness together. The story takes a dramatic turn when Dakota discovers she has a sister named Antarctica and realizes that gaining custody might require her to marry Cooper. This is Cooper's chance to show Dakota she's been the one all along, that they are meant to be together. And just when you think you have it figured all out, a shocking twist will leave you breathless! Plus, the book features a beautiful journey of friends turning into lovers and a big, supportive family that will warm your heart.

Ahh! Im so glad I finally got my hands on Dakota and Cooper! Coop is man down bad. He’s been in love with his BFF Dakota for years!! And she has loved him back just as fierce but didn’t think she deserved him. Coop was patient and kind and the way he cares for Dakota warms your heart. Kota steps up for sister in a time of need and loved watching their relationship grow. They have the best support system in their found family with the Maysen’s.
I think my favorite part of the book his is Cooper already reaffirming his feeling for Dakota

“Loving you is the easiest thing I’ve ever done, Kota. I’ve been doing it since I was a kid.”

I did not want their story to end! But I’m also ready for what’s next with Laiken and Parker!

Cooper and Dakota’s story is a good one. Friends since childhood, feeling kept hidden, and just deepen over the years.

Dakota/Kota did not have an easy childhood, but Cooper and his family were her safe space. Cooper her best friend and champion.

Even as they get older the friendship deepens. Will these two figure it out?? It is the twists and turns, the setbacks, the new discoveries, and life, that kept me glued to the story. Just like book one, a nugget gets dropped that I did not see coming! Looking forward to book three.

Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

2.5⭐ definitely had to skip scenes. did not like how many open door scenes there were. there were some characters I liked but some plot lines were so unrealistic it killed me. the sisters shared a mother but had the same last names?? the policeman went with the phone to trace it instead of to the scene of the crime. her husband is totally cool just covering up and never telling her that he set up her dad to get him in jail and we just glance over the fact that he had access to a backpack of drugs? what the heck?! parents never stepped in, they just let a teen handle it? just forced stuff like that made it feel kinda lazy. not what I thought and not for me.

Dakota and Cooper are ADORABLE! These two are best friends, both fighting an attraction for what feels like forever. Dakota’s insecurities lead her to believe she isn’t good enough for Cooper, when all he wants, is here.

Cooper is perfect in every way. The way he loves and support Dakota. Zero hesitation on helping take on Dakota’s sister who turns up one evening looking for some place to stay. I adored the way these two worked together to give her sister a safe space.

This was my first book by S.J. Chaynie, I’m looking forward to reading more!

ARC Review --

The second book in the Mayson Ranch series and I have to say Cooper and Dakota were everything I was hoping for! I loved seeing how intertwined their lives were from such a young age. Cooper has always been the fierce protector Dakota needed.

Cooper is a man who knows exactly what he wants and he was always a step ahead to get it! Dakota seems like a woman who wants no attachment but she was so fierce and truly would do anything for her found family even while trying to keep them at an arms length.

Following these two was such a treat! I can't wait for the next story.

•Childhood friends to Lovers
•Found family
•Marriage of convenience

Another great book by S. J. Chaynie! Cooper and Dakota's story was a very long time in the making.
When Dakota's has a surprise visit from a sweet and broken little girl her and Cooper are spurred into action.
This story broke my heart so many times and also healed it so many more. It was a Rollercoaster with longing, some suspense, and and whole lot of love.
Definitely a must read. I mean I finished it in a matter of hours because I didn't put it down except to sleep.

Arc review - This is my first arc book and my first review ever. 5 stars isn’t enough for this. Dakota and Cooper are everything a couple should be. Best friends first, they have each other’s backs against the world, even family. The way they loved Ari makes my heart so happy. She never had to feel unwanted or unloved ever again. I read this book in one setting and cannot wait for book 3. Thank you for the advance copy.

Cooper and Dakota’s story was the perfect friends to lovers storyline. Cooper has undeniably always loved Dakota and does everything in his power from a young age to protect her, with her also falling in love with him from an equally young age. Stuck in the friend zone for their entire lives, when Arizona appears and forces some reality and home truths to emerge. Such a sweet story with the ultimate happily ever after in the end 🙌🏻

Freaking looooove. Also, that is the only way to use fruit loops, iykyk. This was such a good friends to lovers, marriage of convenience story! The way that Cooper has loved and protected Dakota from childhood to now is everything. Everyone deserves to feel loved, seen, safe, supported, and cherished. We loooove a good found family.

I ate this book up and finished in a day! I love how patient Cooper is/was throughout the book. The found family is usually one of my favorites because of the sibling humor behind it. The waiting, protecting, longing behind it…yes please! This is a book I’ve thought about almost daily since finishing it. I can’t wait to continue the series!

OMG I love Dakota and Cooper. Watching him go out and show his love for her and watching him protect her with every ounce of his being was so sweet. Then watching Dakota learn about her sister and fight so she can give her a real life that she didn't have herself was so sweet. Their little family was amazing.
