Genesis Walker has spent years trying to live up to the expectations of her faith, her family, and the kind of woman she believes she’s supposed to be. But despite her devotion to God and her dedication to doing things the right way, she’s still haunted by old desires and the memory of the bad boys who once owned her heart. Safe, stable, and perfectly predictable Algernon should be everything she wants—everything she’s prayed for. But her heart refuses to follow logic.

Then there’s Preston Nash.

Fresh out of prison and stepping into the empire his father left behind, Preston is a man on a mission—to build something real, something lasting, something that won’t land him back behind bars. But when he walks into a Bible study looking for peace and instead finds Genesis, temptation takes on a whole new meaning. She’s the kind of good that men like him don’t deserve. But that doesn’t stop him from wanting her.

Genesis knows better than to fall for a man like Preston, but with each shared glance, conversation, and touch that lingers too long, resisting him feels more like a test she’s bound to fail.

After a traumatic experience when she was 15, Genesis leaned into her faith and stayed on the path outlined for her by her parents. 20 years later Genesis is still allowing her mama to control her life. She’s a good Christian woman, she’s in church every Sundy, she goes to bible study every week, and she’s dating a man simply because her mama approves of him. Genesis lives a safe and structured life to please her parents but, she’s dying on the inside. She wants to let loose and truly live but, she’s too afraid of the wrath of Mrs. Walker. When a man she doesn’t recognize walks into bible study, he awakens something in Genesis she thought she buried long ago.

Preston is fresh out of prison after a five year bid for murder. When he inherits the family business from his dad, he vows to do things differently and make Nash Acquisitions a legal enterprise. At the encouragement of his grandmother, Preston goes to bible study to seek guidance and finds so much more. He never imagined, when he stepped into the Lord’s house, he would find the future Mrs. Nash.

Bible Study was a breath of fresh air. I honestly did not expect to love this book as much as I did. It was full of layered emotions and real life struggles that felt too relatable. The characters are dealing with temptation and personal growth in a way that felt real and honest. Genesis has been straddling this line with her parents since she was 15. She hasn’t really forgiven either one of them but, her faith won’t allow her to cut them off. So, she's turned herself into this Stepford daughter and pretends everything is okay. Preston was everything Genesis needed. He showed her she could maintain her faith without sacrificing her happiness and her own needs. These two were able to find the love and peace they were longing for. If you have not read Bible Study, add it to your TBR expeditiously.

(3.5⭐️) So while not a Christian romance it is heavily Christian themed. It’s a story of deconstructing harmful church rhetoric & coming to terms with what your faith and your walk with God looks like beyond toxic holiness. I loved Preston. Real bad. He said what he meant, and meant what he said. And his actions always aligned with his intentions, you never had to worry about what he is thinking. Genesis got on my nerves a lil bit though. I get it though, the church messed her up. And she had a lot to unpack in herself about her faith & living life on her own terms and not her parents/the church. But babygirl…you 35 years old. “Omg I can’t like a “bad boy”. My parents!” 🙄You grown! I need you to go sit on somebody’s couch and figure it out lol. This was a slow build, and I wish just a couple things were addressed before the end…because Ciera, Genesis’ father, and Deacon Charles ain’t get what they deserved.

Beautiful story with a very reflection worthy message about faith and carving out your own spiritual journey regardless of the traditions laid out for you. Preston was A MAN lol like whew everything you want in an MMC he was that. Genesis was no slouch either they were perfectly paired. The reason it’s not a 5 is because while I know every situation can’t end with explosions and physical harm I do think the situation with the Deacon the mama & daddy dragged on forever and the solution was a monologue by our FMC, like I get it but sometimes people need to be cursed out BADDD. That mama and daddy def not seeing the pearly gates I know that much.

I enjoyed this read💜

Genesis represents a lot of us women when we feel like it's not going as planned. We dive straight into the church to become the best women, and listen to those who judge us harshly but aren't living by the same standards. This book is not a Christian romance, but it shows the complexity young women face when trying to live for themselves, appease the church, and maintain their relationship with God. Preston came in and helped Genesis understand that there's nothing she can do that would disrupt her relationship with God. Preston was a MAN! Very dreamy, and he had Genesis sweating in the church! Lol. He showed her that she can have it all and that she should move forward by letting go of past hurts. I enjoyed this slow-burning romance. This was my first book by Tia Love, and I'm looking forward to reading more!

So good!

Easily one of my favorite Black romances of the year! The way I consumed this book in a 24 hour period needs to be studied!

Big daddy Preston did not come to play… met his prey (Genesis) at Bible study and vowed to not only take care of this woman but worked until all of his ducks were in order to go get her and he was on a strict timeline because he wanted her bad baby!

If you like a little drama because her Mama is her biggest opp (she can still catch these paws)

and a lot of accountability and genuine pursuing in a romance that will most likely have you crying at random moments because of how Tia Love bridges scripture in to the hunt and the union… baby get this today!

Beautifully done! Have y’all read this???

10s across the board!

The storytelling. The character arcs. The world building! Im tryna move to Langston Lake! This was a great contemporary romance with Christian elements. I loved how there were honest conversations about personal faith in God and how that looks individually. I also LOVED Preston, and he and Genesis’s growth as a couple and individually. It was angsty in the first half, but i thoroughly enjoyed myself, and wanna read more from this author immediately!

3⭐️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Even though the author states that this is not a Christian romance, it’s most definitely a Christian romance, except it has spice. I liked the chemistry between Genesis and Preston, but I just feel like the story was missing something, and I didn’t like the ending.

First off, the audio was such a great time. Wesleigh Siobhan and Myles Washington absolutely brought these characters to life. Their performances added so much personality to the story and really pulled me deeper into it.

I actually never wrote a review when I first read this book, so this is my chance to finally get my thoughts out.

In Bible Study we meet Genesis, a woman who has recommitted her life to God after having her heart completely shattered five years ago. Because of that experience, she has sworn off bad boys and committed herself to celibacy until she finds her husband.

Everything seems to be going according to plan. She’s dating a nice, predictable man from a wealthy family named Algernon (and I’m sorry but… what kind of name is Algernon?? Terrible. I know.)

But her safe, boring life is about to get shaken up when the very type of man she promised herself she would avoid walks right into her Bible study.

Enter Preston Nash.

Preston has just been released from prison and is ready to step into his role running the family business while trying to stay out of trouble. At his grandmother’s request, he agrees to attend Bible study to ease her worries.

He fully intends to go one time and never return.

That plan goes out the window the moment he walks in and sees Genesis.

Preston is the type of man who knows exactly what he wants, and it takes him about five seconds to realize Genesis is the woman he desires. And I appreciated the way he pursued her. It wasn’t reckless or forceful — he had patience and allowed things to develop naturally while still making it clear what his intentions were.

These two come from very different backgrounds and families, but I loved the way they communicated with each other. Preston showed real patience with Genesis and the triggers from her past, while Genesis didn’t allow those past wounds to blind her from seeing who Preston truly was.

Their relationship just felt grown and sexy in the best way. The chemistry was there, but so was the maturity. Preston stepping behind Genesis the way he did — setting up accounts, making plans, moving like a real grown man — had me like okay sir 👏🏾👏🏾.

Now let’s talk about Ruth, because I absolutely loved her. She might’ve been my favorite character in the whole book. We all need a sister like Ruth — someone who stands ten toes down for you, encourages you to live in your truth, and challenges you when you’re standing in your own way.

I also loved seeing Genesis finally stand up for herself in the end, especially when it came to confronting her mother. Honestly, both of her parents deserved that conversation because they were equally responsible for the way they treated her — and that daddy definitely needed some words.

And when Preston checked her mama at that table?? Whew.
“I don’t trust you with her.” 😮‍💨

Yeah… I was here for every second of that.

This was my first book by Tia Love, but it definitely won’t be my last. I had a great time with this one and I’m excited to dive deeper into her catalog.

This book hit some people where it hurts. I truly understand the title. It’s just right. Appropriate. People use the Bible to control people. Genesis found her voice and life by not taking it so literally and Preston opened her eyes to everything or everyone is not as it seems.

Her parents are what turn people away. Her sister was there for her through it all. No judgement just love and support. Kind of a slow burn.

Highly recommend

Baybee! This book is anything but a Christian novel but the way the author weaved the Bible Study theme through the book was 👌🏽

And Preston has earned a spot on my book bae list. I love a MMC that is emotionally available, knows what he wants, has a don’t play bout her attitude with a lil BDE on the side. He knew he wanted Genesis but knew he had to come correct, despite the ghosts his past. It’s a slow burn that developed the characters in such a beautiful, relatable way.

Watching the FMC be handled with care, supported & loved while she journeyed through her healing journey was refreshing.

Ruth might have been my 2nd favorite character. I loved her!

I cackled, snapped my fingers, and clutched my pearls reading this book. This books gave me all the feels. 😍

So...this honestly wasnt what I was expecting. Not in a bad way....but also not fully in a good way. The writing in this was really good though and I do want to read more Tia Love for sure!! I love the way the story flowed and the emotional depth this had.

Howeva. This book focused a lottttttttt on Genesis and her religious trauma, but doesnt work towards solving any of it in my opinion in the end. It felt like a lot of build up and then kind of sizzled out. I HATEDDDDD how she judged Preston almost to the point of not thinking he was even smart nor could read- and it really irked me. She did all that judging and didnt ask not ONE question about his past since she was so worried about his "bad boy" image. Mind you- they 35. You too grown to be talking about some "hes such a bad boy" girl. That is a grown man. YOU are a grown woman shaking in your boots yet asked ZERO questions. That man offed somebody- and she never found out. It was just really annoying I'm sorry 😭. I feel like if they were like 27 or something or younger i wouldve believed it more. But you that old letting your mama talk AT you, your daddy act crazy, AND you basically let a killer in your space and DONT KNOW? Theres just no way- i feel like that just didnt make sense since she was so concerned about his image and past yet never learned basically any of his history.

THEN with HER past, I feel like nothing was actually...done. Maybe I've been reading to many crazy MMCs and Preston was really trying to turn his life around- but Deacon Charles? Under the jail. Algernon aka Algebra? Put him through a wall and then bury him under the jail. Like ugh. LMAOOOOOOOO.

Overall I mean this was a really good read and really well written, theres just a few things i wish were different and I wish it was more romance and Preston and Genesis working out their troubles than religion. (Yes i know the book is called bible study- but there was barely any of that in the book as in literally bible study class LOL)

This book was so good. The lessons learned by both main characters were beautiful. Reading Genesis learning herself and breaking the shackles of her parents' expectations was chefs kiss. Her faith was admirable, but I was glad to see her wake up and realize how her parents weaponized faith for control. Her relationship with her sister was perfection. Ruth gave her not only the advice she needed but also the advice she didn't want to hear. I absolutely loved their relationship.

As for Preston, he is book bae. He saw Genesis and knew that was his wife. He did everything he could to become the man he not only wanted to be but also needed to be. His relationship with his mother and Granny was everything and more. His friendships with Corn and Fred were some of my favorite to read. They poured into each other and kept it real.

Preston and Genesis not only needed but deserved each other. Reading Preston uplift her and see here, wheww may that type of love find everybody. This is one of my favorite books of the year.

Ok. So this book rocked my world. In a good way.

I normally stay away from books with religious themes (I got a lot of church hurt) but Tia Love is one of my favorite authors and I knew this wasn’t going to be a Christian romance book.

What I didn’t expect was to relate to both Genesis and Ruth. Being raised religious, I knew what it was like to live a restricted life full of judgement and rules like Genesis. And I know what it’s like to decide to live life on your own terms like Ruth.

Genesis’s story brought up a lot of unresolved emotions regarding religion and (I had to take a break at one point) but the beauty of the journey brought me back to the book.

Preston was everything Genesis needed him to be and I love that for her.

Shout out to Tia Love! This book was so beautifully written and it took me on a journey to further healing.

🤞🏾 Ruth gets her own book.

Bible Study is a deeply layered and emotionally resonant story that explores faith, identity, and the quiet battles many young women face within religious spaces. Rather than presenting a traditional Christian romance, this novel leans into the complexity of navigating personal desires, spiritual beliefs, and external expectations.

Genesis is a compelling protagonist whose life has been shaped by fear, control, and a rigid understanding of what it means to be “good.” Her internal conflict is both believable and heartbreaking, as she struggles to reconcile her desire for autonomy with the pressure to conform to her family’s and church’s standards.

Preston’s entrance into her life serves as a catalyst for change, but what makes his character stand out is not just his charm—it is his emotional intelligence and patience. He does not attempt to “fix” Genesis but instead creates a space where she feels seen, safe, and supported enough to begin dismantling the walls she has built. His reassurance that her relationship with God is not as fragile as she believes is one of the most powerful themes in the story.

The novel also does not shy away from addressing the darker side of religious environments. It thoughtfully examines how doctrine can be misused to control, silence, and even harm, particularly within families that prioritize perception over truth. Genesis’s parents embody this tension, and their actions add a layer of realism that makes the story even more impactful.

Ultimately, this is a story about healing, self-discovery, and redefining faith on one’s own terms. The character development is strong, the emotional stakes are high, and the message is both timely and necessary.

Did not finish
March 22, 2026
I wanted to finish this book so badly but I couldn't do it. I stopped at 19% I know it's supposed to be a slow burn but I wasn't HOOKED. I couldnt stand the constant description of Preston being a "bad boy", "dangerous", "tattoos" etc I've noticed a lot of romance stories do this. They romanticise "bad boys" and I realised I dislike it. Especially when the character is far from it. Yes, he was released from jail for revenge not because he enjoys killing people AND he is a normal dude who is interested in real estate, fixing cars and helping around the house etc, there is NOTHING bad or dangerous about his character 😂🫠.

He is just as boring as Algernon who we were introduced to at the beginning of the story. So, I felt like his description was misleading. And honestly started losing interest from there really...I wish the author made it clear...is he misunderstood or will we actually get to see his dangerous side?

Also, the author stresses with a readers note that it's not a Christian romance yet it feels very cookie cutter to me lol their attraction (main characters chemistry is meh) is described very tastefully and there are host of bible references and church references🤦🏾‍♀️. And that's not bad, but again I feel like the direction of the story isn't clear and I sense it won't get any clearer lol The female character is a librarian for goodness sake lol its just not adding up for me lol

I just couldn't continue reading. It wasn't clear in terms of the direction and I sensed if I continued reading it would just get worse.

What a story! A different twist and spin to bring about trust, faith, understanding, healing, romance, love, and so many other feelings.

Genesis and Preston, we're like peeling an onion, as they were both wrapped in so many layers. Genesis needed to be freed from feelings guilty about the actions of a predator and her parents' acceptance of her

Preston needed to be freed to separate himself from the way his late father moved. He wanted to build his own legacy the legal way.

They pushed each other to heal by not forgetting that God saw them at their lowest, struggling to understand their circumstances.

This story was definitely a slow burn with the healing and trusting together. Her mother was a piece of cake and an embarrassing and sorry POS. Miss holy rolly.
MESSY CHRISTIAN!

Genesis and Preston worked hard to build a relationship based on themselves. Her sister Ruthie was hilarious! She spoke her truth and didn't hold back. She was good for Genesis's ego and keeping her from going to a dark place, doubting herself.

There was so much in this story to unpack. Two of my many favorite scenes were Preston letting Algernon know where he stood and to get in line or else. The second one was Preston putting Genesis's mother in check about the new Genesis. Noone was allowed to mess with his baby's peace.

The author did an amazing job telling the story.

Genesis x Preston

“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭10‬:‭9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Don’t let the book title fool you….this is NOT a Christian romance!

I downloaded this book during the Book Baes and Heas event. After several recommendations, I moved it to the top of my TBR list.

This was a truly a slow burn….a slow simmer could be a better description. But when it started burning, it was on fire! I absolutely loved this book! The story line and character development was spot on.

Genesis was a good Christian girl. She used her faith to create a sense of perfection for herself. Her life was safe, structured and dictated based on the opinions of others. Preston was a certified bad boy. He was rough around the edges, confident and marched to the beat of his own drum.

I loved how patient Preston was with Genesis. He showed her that she could still maintain her faith without sacrificing happiness. Preston leaned on his own faith to fight the demons of his past and to position himself for the legacy that was left him. Together, this unsuspecting couple was able to find the peace and love they both didn’t realize they needed. And yeah….the spice is there

This was such a good book that intertwined love, trauma, faith, family, and purpose. Let me start by saying the author says multiple times that this is NOT a Christian romance, while it has elements of it, it’s a contemporary romance at its core. As a woman who grew up in a Christian household that upheld purity culture (more for the girls than the boys), I understood the FMC a lot. I liked Genesis and Preston a lot but I also wish that she would’ve upheld her celibacy. On one hand, her celibacy was a trauma response but I think it also gave her clarity about relationships. With Preston not really being a church going man, it would have been nice if he showed he took her faith seriously by abstaining with her. I think it also would have showed that even though you have those desires and it’s good to know why, not giving into temptation has its rewards. But this could also be the purity culture that I grew up with rearing its head.

SN: I also wish that he would have checked his ex for Genesis. Her parents were the absolute worst and deserve all the bad things.

All that being said, I loved that as soon as he laid his eyes on Genesis he knew she would be his wife and started getting things in order so that he could be the husband that she needed.

Oh yeah, this was good af.

Okay so - Genesis! A veryyyy lovely woman okay lol. One time for girls who look so sweet but gotta different side to them! lol. I just really loved her.

Preston! I loved him omg, he was so intense and sweet. The literal perfect match for Genesis.

I just see two people who were looking to be better and finding that motivation in each other.

Genesis's mother was disgusting. Like omg. And how and WHYYYY was she so hard on Genesis but Ruth just out here living freely. I understand they are two different people, but it was just crazy to me. I wanted to see the aftermath of the fall out. Like what did her dad say? That dirty deacon? Like - I wanted more there lol. Part 2? Idk.

Algenon gave up very easily over that little threat. He's supposed to be old money with connections and entitled but he threw in the title quick. I needed him to be more of a pest lol. Maybe Im just begging for a series at this point. But Im glad that was there to show the growth in Preston.

Overall, this was good af and interesting. I liked the church journey, Genesis and her trust in God and Preston and his steps towards God. The prayer at the end had me about to shout lol.

Not a Christian romance but lots of references to Christianity and scripture which I appreciate! It honestly might offend some people but I can respect someone telling a story with Godly influence from a human perspective.

This was my first Tia Love book and sis told a story! It’s a slow burn but the build up kept me intrigued. I felt like I was really getting to know the characters. I enjoyed their individual stories, their backgrounds, their inner thoughts, the internal battles with being the best version of themselves while still being imperfect. I felt connected to them individually and them together.. baybee do we need to bring some holy water into this equation?! I just know in the implied scenes Genesis was going full on “spank me daddy sub.” 🤣🤣

Okay, okay.. seriously! I loved Preston’s pursuit of his family legacy and Genesis because they were one and the same. I loved all the side characters, especially Ruth! I don’t really know what I was expecting but it wasn’t what I got in the best way. I’ll definitely get into more by this author!

This was a good book!

I did not know what to expect besides knowing this was not a Christian novel. LOL I came in with an open mind, no expectations and this story was amazing!

As a believer who knows there is a certain way to walk in Christ, the way this story was told was refreshing and freeing. I was reminded again:

God loves me regardless of my past, present, or future.

God is not like man. He is not in the business of punishing people or ignoring things that are wrong. Those type of people are not His true representation.

God will always place people, places, and things in your life to restore and bring you back to Him, showing His grace and love through it.

The way I was rooting for both Genesis and Preston is almost hilarious. I wanted both of them to win and evolve from their pasts so bad. So happy they were able to move beyond that as individuals with the help of one another.

I can’t wait to read more about them because this can’t be the end for them. ❤️

Church is in session!

This story said said faith, feelings, AND drama are all invited to the same table 😩

Because why did I think this was gonna be calm and inspirational only to get pulled into layered emotions, real-life struggles, and relationships that feel way too relatable?! The characters are dealing with faith, choices, temptation, and personal growth in a way that feels honest and human not perfect, just real.

I found myself rooting for them one minute, shaking my head the next, and still hoping they figure it all out. The story balances spiritual themes with emotional tension, showing how belief, love, and life challenges can collide in messy but meaningful ways.

By the time I got deeper into it, I wasn’t just reading I was reflecting, side-eyeing decisions, and lowkey feeling convicted in a few spots too.

If you like stories that mix faith, personal growth, and real emotional journeys with a little drama along the way, this one will definitely pull you in. 📚✨

I really wanted to love this book… but for me it landed more in the “liked it, didn’t love it” category.

And honestly, this might be a me thing more than a book thing, because once the story got going I did find myself enjoying parts of it. The beginning was a little hard for me to connect to, and it took me a while to fully get invested in the characters and the story.

That said, the ending definitely saved it for me. Once the plot really started moving, I felt more pulled in and appreciated how things wrapped up.

One thing I personally would have loved to see more of was Genesis standing up to her father. I kept waiting for that moment where she really checked him, because he was very much apart of her trauma. and I think that would have made the character arc feel even stronger.

Overall, while it didn’t completely hook me the way I hoped, it was still a solid read, and the payoff toward the end made the journey worth

This book was so good! While it’s not a Christian romance book I can appreciate how Bible Study was used throughout the book.

I loved how Genesis was able to let go and find her own path when it came to reclaiming her womanhood and to heal from her past trauma. I also loved how she was able to finally let go and be loved on by Preston. My girl truly deserved it.

Preston is a walking testament of “if he wanted to he would.” He knew (actually they both did) from the moment he laid his eyes on Genesis that she was his end game. I loved how the author showed that someone who was once incarcerated can have motivation to stay out but to help others in the process.

Overall I loved the themes and messages that this book had and would recommend this one who is in the mood for a slow burn contemporary romance.

My Kind Of Bible Study

I loved this book. I knew I would like it from the Authors note letting us readers know that this isn’t a Christian romance. That let me know there would be some hunching going on. As a woman who grew up in a very religious household, and then turned around a “came out” as bisexual I’ve seen how families use God and the bible as a weapon instead of God as our father and protector, healer, provider and the bible as the Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. This book was written so well because it really tapped into how we as Christian’s sometimes let our faith hinder us from experiencing life and love. I saw a lot of mixed reviews on this book but I’m glad I still read it because I love the concept and I love a man that don’t play about his woman. And a man who is a true eater 😏

Whew! Genesis was failed by her parents and the church. I was happy to see her growth from beginning to end. Watching her find the courage to stand up to her mom and lay everything out on the table, was a relief. I wish she would have been able to confront both parents but hey, at least one was addressed. Also! Shoutout to pierced girlies 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 I love to see this represented in Black romance books!

Preston…baybee , he was not playing. His intentions were clear from jump, he wanted Genesis, and he wasn’t wavering at all. No confusion, no mixed signals, just all gas, no brakes. Even when she tried to pull back, he basically said, “yeah…I’m coming to get you,” and I loved that for herrrr!

We cannot forget about Ruth. A real one, PERRRRIOD! The sister relationship between Genesis and Ruth was everything. Ruth had her front, back, and both sides…. I absolutely loved their relationship.
