Dante can’t help but think the words. Even as he stands in the city of gods, surrounded by faces of legend, he can’t stop seeing her falling through that endless void, mentally shouting that one word up at him so viciously he knows it’s forever branded upon his soul.
Betrayal.
The Fallen.
Where am I?
After falling for what seems like forever, Adrian finds herself in an entirely new world. A world of darkness which calls to something unnamed inside her. With every truth revealed, every injustice bared, it hums ever louder, buzzing through her veins and begging to be released. Setting her fear aside, Adrian tastes it for the first time.

“The gods have rules. She has none.” 🩸🗡️🔥 The Second Sanctum by A.N. Horton
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — Top Tier Fantasy of 2025
So what’s it about?
Adrian fell through hell in The Third Ring, but nothing could have prepared her—or me—for the darkness waiting in The Second Sanctum. After plunging into a shadowed, brutal world, she’s faced with truths that tear her apart, injustices that demand reckoning, and a power deep inside herself that hums and begs to be released.
Dante is still there—an echo of a bond that might have been—but fractured, distant, and possibly wrong. Adrian’s journey isn’t about reunion; it’s about discovering herself, exploring her own power, and carving her place in a world that doesn’t play by the gods’ rules.
Why you can’t miss it:
✅ 568 pages of cinematic, immersive high fantasy ✅ Darker, bloodier, higher-stakes Trials ✅ Adrian’s independence and power growth take center stage ✅ Complex, evolving magic system ✅ The lingering, tension-filled connection with Dante ⚡ ✅ Intriguing new characters (I see you, Gryphon 👀) ✅ Lore that hints at interwoven universes beyond this story ✅ Epic imagery, including the unforgettable human wall of Zvers
The Tension:
Adrian navigates a world humming with secrets, injustice, and forbidden power. The bond with Dante remains—felt, fragile, and maybe not meant to be. Meanwhile, Gryphon lurks in the shadows, teasing a connection we’re only beginning to understand. Every trial, vision, and revelation draws Adrian closer to her own strength and destiny.
Final Thoughts:
The Second Sanctum is darker, sharper, and more emotionally devastating than its predecessor. Horton’s writing will wreck you, hook you, and leave you desperate for more. Adrian is no longer just surviving; she’s rising, claiming her power, and demanding attention on her own terms.
Book three? A.N. Horton, my soul is on the line—do not test me. 💀🔥
🗓️ Expected release: December 2, 2025 📍 Get ready. You will not survive—and you will not want to.
4.5 🌟 Wow oh wow, this book took me on an adventure 🤭
If you felt confined by The Third Ring taking place mostly within the Sanctuary, get ready, this sequel opens the world wide open. We’re introduced to new lands, new people, and layers upon layers of history and lore. The world-building made everything clicks. Every new detail felt like a missing puzzle piece finally sliding into place. The ending isn’t quite as jaw-dropping as book one’s (thankfully because I genuinely might not have survived another cliffhanger like that), but it did make me scream “I knew it!”
Not sure what I’ll do with myself now while I wait for book 3. I do hope to see everyone being nicer to Dante though, and he deserved all the foul treatment initially, but it was starting to make me sad towards the end. Baby boy deserves his happy ending too after all. I feel like he has “repented” or whatever at this point. Manifesting him and Ksenia… and of course, Adrian and Gryfon!!
Thank you so much to A.N. Horton for the eARC! Really needed it (even though I realistically could have waited the month) so I wouldn’t die :)
This is truly one of those books that’s impossible to review without spoilers, especially with the way the first book ended.
I will say new magic is being discovered, Dante our MMC from book 1 has a heavy conscience, and a new bond is formed, and I’m absolutely shipping it. If you like your romantasy,s full of betrayal, improper balance of power, meddling gods, and lots of secrets you will devour this series. We also have a unique take on mythical creatures and bonds, it was an absolute breath of fresh air outside of dragons and wolves! This is a whole new spin on dystopian romance! We get a lot more world building in book 2, and I will say this takes place outside the sanctuary.
In true AN Horton fashion this too ends on a diabolical cliffhanger that actually left me close to tears after a very prominent revelation was made.
Thank you so much for AN Horton for allowing me to read this pre-release in exchange for my honest review.
Omg this book was SO GOOD!!!! This book was real heavy on the intricate world building and political intrigue especially since a war is brewing. The way I read this book hoping to recover from the ending of book 1 and I still have not recovered 😅.
Adrian is such a bad*** I love her so bad!!!! I love everything about her. She is so strong, powerful, and selfless, and will do anything for the people she loves. I also love how much she stands up for herself. The friendships, relationships, and bonds in this book were EVERYTHING!!! This book made me feel all the emotions you could ever think of
I need the next book IMMEDIATELY and I need ANSWERS. I’m literally so excited for the next one.
I was fortunate to receive an ARC of The Second Sanctum, I’m completely hooked. I devoured The Third Ring in one sitting and absolutely loved it. After finishing The Second Sanctum, my obsession with this series has only deepened.
The Second Sanctum is gripping, emotional, and unforgettable—this series is a breath of fresh air, and I can’t recommend it highly enough!
I thought I knew (almost) everything there was to know about the inner workings of this world. I thought I had guessed where A.N. Horton might lead us after the masterpiece that was The Third Ring, Book 1 of her Sanctum series. But I was so, so wrong. So wrong in my predictions and ideas.
Still, am I sad about it? Not at all. I'm utterly in awe at how Horton managed to pull everything together and then expand it into an even more intricate web of worlds, ideas, and power plays.
Yes, I said worlds, because that is what the author gifted us: new worlds, new characters, and new key players, right alongside Adrian and Dante. After the devastating ending of Book 1, I never could’ve imagined the turns this story would take.
Adrian has remained a steady character, even with all her inner demons and her haunting past. She never lost the trait that makes her Adrian: the love and devotion she holds for those closest to her heart. Even in her darkest moments, she gives everything she has to save others, even at her own detriment. Dante himself said many times that she was better than him, and he was right. She is better. But still, even with everything that happened, I couldn't bring myself to hate Dante. And believe me, I tried. Some sins may never be forgiven, but now, after everything, I’m not sure Dante could have ever acted differently than he did. He is a product of his upbringing, and sadly, he didn’t have the strength to rise above it, not even for Adrian. Will he ever find it? Well, I do love a redemption arc, so I still have some faith left.
Still, this story reaches beyond just their relationship, as much as their love is shaped and tainted by the world around them. The surroundings, the systems, the truths they were raised to believe. So what happens when those truths shatter? When the lies burn away and the real history rises from the ashes? How does one accept that everything they believed was false? Horton is a master of weaving false histories and false narratives together with mind-shattering revelations and heroes who are heroes no longer.
So, immerse yourself in the Sanctum series and meet these deeply layered, flawed characters as they search for what they believe their destiny might be. Fall in love with the plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Ask questions. Chase answers. Witness friendships and loves being born and destroyed. And so, so much more.
Thank you, A.N. Horton, for having me on your ARC team and for allowing me to witness this beautiful story unfold.
3.5 and was tempted to round down because I felt slightly let down after the high of the first. Heavy with grief, mythology, and politics, this is an emotional (and slightly messy) ride - really this book should have been titled “pity party”.
This book picks up right where The Third Ring left off, only now we’re in dual POV—Adrian and Dante—post betrayal, post chaos, post heartbreak. And it’s a lot. A lot of new information, new characters, new emotional spirals… and also a lot of philosophical wandering from both leads as they try to sort through guilt, purpose, loyalty, and identity.
Where book one had me obsessed with the brutality and mystery of the Trials, Second Sanctum zooms out and deepens the mythology and worldbuilding. We learn more about the gods (or so-called gods), Sanctuary’s hidden history, and the different realms and races that have been living under its oppressive thumb. There’s a heavy focus on balance—good and evil, light and dark, peace and revolution—and how disrupting that balance (even with good intentions) has a cost.
Adrian is still reeling, and honestly spends a lot of the book pushing people away, especially General Broody Love Interest #2, which made the later shift toward him feel abrupt. Meanwhile, Dante is a mess of guilt and longing, but the grovel was weak at best. One drunken “I still love you” just didn’t cut it. I needed more for Adrian after what she went through.
Other frustrations: • The amulet reveal felt way too last-minute and underdeveloped. • Darius’s hypocrisy was hard to stomach—especially considering Adrian’s sacrifices. • The first half dragged with both leads wallowing in emotional limbo.
But there’s still so much here that worked: • The deeper dive into the politics of rebellion • Adrian navigating her role as weapon, symbol, and strategist • The hint of fated mates (but twisted and complicated in a way I liked) • And the brewing storm of whatever the hell is coming next
We’re clearly in the middle-book setup for an epic confrontation, possibly even god-killing levels of rebellion. I’ll be continuing because I need to know: Will Adrian rise or break? Can Dante ever be redeemed? Will the world burn for change—or be rebuilt?
This is a high-concept, high-stakes romantasy with rich worldbuilding, emotionally broken characters, and a slow-burning plot that simmers with unrest. If you’re in it for the long game, this book delivers. Just be ready to wait a little longer for the real war to start

I’m obsessed with this series!! This was an amazing sequel to The Third Ring — the world expands so much as we explore new places, dive deeper into the history, and meet new characters and creatures. The world-building is incredible. The pacing of this one is a bit slower than the first book, but it worked perfectly for me! I loved following Adrian’s and Dante’s individual journeys.
I love Adrian so much!! She is such a strong, determined, and powerful FMC and I loved watching her discover herself throughout this book. Dante had me feeling so conflicted, but by the end, I was rooting for him to find happiness. And then there’s Gryphon… I did not see him coming 👀 he’s very mysterious and has me so intrigued. I also loved seeing some new friendships form in this book!
After the events of book one, the romance in this one is barely a whisper — however, there is still some fantastic tension and overprotectiveness sprinkled in, and I ate it up!!
The Second Sanctum is a unique and refreshing dystopian fantasy, and the excellent expansion of the world and plot really stood out. This series is truly so addictive and I could not put this book down! I can’t wait to see where this story will go in book 3!
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book from the author. ❤️
Wow. I did not see any of what happened in this book coming! I love being surprised and unable to predict where a story will go. That’s one of the reasons I loved The Third Ring, and why I enjoyed The Second Sanctum just as much. Both books were surprising, unpredictable, and unlike anything I’ve read before.
I’m an avid reader, especially of fantasy, dystopian fantasy, and some sci-fi. Over the past few years, I’ve read hundreds of books in these genres. While many of them are enjoyable, most blur together once I finish because they follow familiar patterns. Very few stand out as truly unique.
The Second Sanctum was refreshingly different. It defied my expectations completely, both in the direction of the story and in the revelations it delivered. The character development was compelling and full of depth, and every twist caught me off guard in the best way.
This series has already surprised me twice, and I am already dying to see what happens in book 3!
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of The Second Sanctum, and I have to say—I’m completely hooked. I read The Third Ring in one sitting and absolutely loved it; it was easily one of the best books I’ve read in years (and I’m picky!). After finishing The Second Sanctum, my obsession has only grown.
A.N. Horton does an incredible job exploring Adrian’s emotions toward Dante—her anger and heartbreak over believing he chose to kill her, yet the undeniable bond that still ties them together, “false” or not. Zya’s character development was a standout for me—her loyalty and quiet strength were exactly what Adrian needed. And Gryfon! Such a fun and compelling addition—I can’t wait to see what happens next.
I adore stories that challenge ideas of morality, loyalty, and what it means to do the right thing, and Horton captures that beautifully. The Second Sanctum is powerful, emotional, and utterly unforgettable—a refreshing and unique series that I can’t recommend enough!
You ever have that feeling where you’re kinda nervous that the second book in a series won’t hit like the first book? Well The Second Sanctum by A.N. Horton gave me the opposite feeling and blew my expectations out of the park!!
In the Second Sanctum, we continue right from the twist and betrayal of The Third Ring! I’ve read books before with insane endings but when I tell you The Third Ring’s ending was actually so brutal, I was desperate for The Second Sanctum!
In The Third Ring, I was so intrigued by the unique plot of the book, especially the world of the walled city called The Sanctuary. Of course, I had so many questions, and let me just say A.N. Horton delivered the answers in The Second Sanctum! We get to learn so much in the second sanctum while being introduced to new characters and new worlds that Adrian and Dante were definitely not prepared for. In The Second Sanctum, Adrian and Dante have to face their new realities!
Adrian is an FMC who will truly never back down from fighting against injustice and fighting for her loved ones! Adrian’s strength and power is something I truly admire in an FMC! She has gone through so much and continues to get back up every time! In the Second Sanctum, we get to see her full power while also seeing those who are trying to use her power for their own motives!
And oh my, where do I even begin with Dante? He is truly reeling from that ending in The Third Ring, and he has so much repairing to do! I definitely enjoyed his POV in The Second Sanctum and following along as he uncovers new pieces of information and the deceptions he thought he understood.
Let’s take a moment to also acknowledge Gryfon! I love a PROTECTIVE and mysterious MAN! I am very intrigued to see what the third book will hold in store for Adrian, Dante, and Gryfon! I am ready for the ride A.N Horton will take me on!
Thank you so much A.N. Horton for providing me with an ARC of The Second Sanctum! ❤️
Just finished reading an advanced copy of a book that was just released called, The Second Sanctum. This picks up right where book one, The Third Ring, left off which I was so happy about! So much is revealed in this story between the betrayal, the twists, the politics, the mind games, the manipulation, the fight for control. The world building in this story is incredible, the attention to details throughout the story absolutely makes it come to life, the characters feel real and authentic and flawed which just made me even more invested in this story. Just like I said about the first book, this series is everything I look for in a fantasy/romantasy, it didn't disappoint! (I mean that sword fighting scene, come onnn! 😮💨) This was a rollercoaster of a book that had me gasping, worried, shocked, laughing, and hanging on every word. I don't know how I'm supposed to wait until the next book after that! ❤️📚
Thank you to the author and her team for this ARC of The Second Sanctum, in exchange for an honest review.
I was lucky to receive an ARC of The Second Sanctum and it did not disappoint!! The first book of the series was one of my favorite reads this year and I desperately needed to know what happened after the massive betrayal at the end of book 1.
The pacing of this book was engaging and the world/setting was original and creative. It kept me entertained from beginning to end with anticipation of what would happen next and how it would wrap up. If I had anything negative to say, it would be that I am not sure what is going on with Darius - I feel as if his character in general is underdeveloped along with "his friends". I am not sure that they felt important to what was happening. I wanted to feel a little more emotionally attached to Gryphon and perhaps I needed some of his POV inserted throughout.
Overall, it was a great read - the book ends in another cliff hanger so I will be anxiously awaiting the next installment!
I’ve been really looking forward to The Second Sanctum after that insane cliffhanger from The Third Ring and I was not disappointed! Literally picking up right where we left off, we’re immediately thrust back into the world of Sanctuary.
In this one, we get Dante’s POV which I was glad to have his insights on how the ending of TTR went down. Some of his chapters did have me emotional, but I’ll just say I’m team Adrian 😅
Adrian is still our headstrong FMC and I’m happy that she doesn’t change. We also get to meet some excellent new characters in this one and I’m really excited for the direction this story is heading! The extended world building was also super fun, I loved getting more insights to the history of Sanctuary.
The Second Sanctum is another fast paced, action packed, gripping dystopian fantasy that pulled me in from the first page. AN Horton really knows how to captivate her readers! I can’t wait for book 3 to see what happens next!
Thank you AN Horton for the eArc in exchange for an honest review!
Thank you A.N Horton for the eARC. Book 2 in the Sanctum Series.
This was a wild ride!! Hold on tight because you do not know the direction it will take. Book 2 starts up right where book 1 left off with dual POVs, new world building, new characters and a lot of political f**kery with the Gods/Geists.
A.N. Horton has a genius brain, true appreciation for her creativity and imagination. The adventure she takes you on is like none in the Romantasy genre. A refreshing take 💯
Always ending on a crazy cliffhanger that leaves you frothing at the maw. Looking forward to see how she wraps this all up!
This series should be HUGE. It is truly incredible and is my top book(s) of the entire year. A.N. Horton is an absolute master of keeping you flipping the pages. The suspense, the shock, the story. If you haven't already figured it out I loved this book. It was the perfect second book to The Third Ring which I also LOVED. The Second Sanctum took us on an entirely different journey to what happens next. I'm not going to say too much because I think you should go into this pretty blind. If you enjoy fantasy with unique magic, trials, high stakes, villains and badass FMCs you will eaaaat this up.
I am so grateful to have been an ARC reader for The Second Sanctum.
Since I picked up A. N. Hortons books last year I haven't been able to get enough of her fantasy stories, and book has me yet again yearning for more.
The Second Sanctum has strong world building, friendship, hardship, self-discovery, and so many more strong topics that make this book a page turner.
I have loved Adrian since the beginning, and I further feel for her and love her as a character. Her development is inspiring and truly helps the reader understand her character.
I really enjoyed meeting so many new. characters in this story as well. and oh my goodness, the end. I won't spoil anything, but it opens up a whole new layer to the story and the series.
I didn’t expect any of this stuff with the underground WOW that was crazy, this is such a unique dystopian urban Romantasy series and I love the fmc Adrian, ok also do we have another love interest?!! Idk who I’m rooting for at this point, Dante still has a lot to making up to do! This book felt a little slower than the first book but really picked up at the end, so thankful to have received an arc!
**contains spoilers if you have not read The Third Ring**
an absolute masterpiece of tension, revelation, and emotional devastation. Picking up the threads left from the first book, this sequel doesn’t just expand the world of Sanctuary — it redefines it.
From the very first chapter, the tone is darker, heavier, and more introspective. The female main character’s evolution is nothing short of brilliant. The weapon she becomes — forged through betrayal, loss, and the cruel manipulations of those who held her life in secrecy — makes her story both tragic and empowering. Horton captures her transformation with stunning precision, allowing readers to feel every ounce of her fury, confusion, and determination as she uncovers truths that were never meant to be found.
One of the strongest elements of this sequel is its dual perspective between the Geists (the god-like beings) and the humans. This structure peels back the mythology layer by layer, revealing a fractured timeline and long-buried motives that challenge everything we thought we knew about Sanctuary. It’s ambitious and complex, but Horton’s writing makes it seamless — every revelation lands with weight and purpose, each perspective enriching the emotional and moral conflict of the world.
And then there’s the tension between the two main characters — sharp, aching, and impossible to look away from. After a betrayal that cuts to the core, their dynamic becomes a study in pain and loyalty, love and mistrust. Horton doesn’t rush their reconciliation; instead, the story simmers with raw emotion and unspoken words, making every interaction feel electric.
By the final chapters, the stakes have never been higher. The plot twists hit hard, and the setup for Book 3 is absolutely chilling — the kind of ending that leaves you staring at the last page, desperate and a little heartbroken, already craving more.
With The Second Sanctum, Horton proves her talent for weaving together myth, emotion, and brutality in a way that feels both epic and intimate. It’s a story about power, survival, and the cost of truth — and it cements this series as one of the most emotionally charged and intricately built fantasies out there.
Thank you A.N. Horton for giving me the opportunity to read The Second Sanctum as an advanced reader copy.
Below is my spoiler free review of book 2, The Second Sanctum
While this book is lower in spice compared to book 1, there is so much plot development you literally do not notice!
I really enjoyed the expansion of this world, the blending of dystopian with fantasy elements felt very unique and kept me interested, especially as the book progressed and we learned more about not only what keeps the sanctum working, but the magic system, and what lies beyond what we understood in book 1.
This book is different to the first in that the reader shares time almost equally between Dante and Adrain’s POVs, which gives a lot of robust context for what’s happening.
Additionally- there are a few new characters we meet along the way (wink, wink) that have me very interested in seeing where book 3 takes us. 😉
While I won’t spoil the romance for you: the relationship between our FMC and MMC isn’t quite over, can he redeem himself? Or is it too late?
My baby Adrian has been THROUGH it, and that momentum doesnt stop in book 2; watching her continue to face battles (and preservere like the badass FMC we know she is) was so fun to read.
This book ends on a cliffhanger in more than one way and I’m excited to continue the series!
Overall this book has multiple twists, turns, POVs, and new side characters, and a dose of groveling (which doesn’t hurt)
I received an ARC for my honest review, thank you to the author for allowing me to read and share my thoughts (and DM her when I reached different parts of book 2 that had me kicking my feet 🤭)
solid 4.5⭐️!! this book WILDLY expands on the world and develops the plot from the first book and I am so happy with the direction the series is going in!
we got so many new characters that I am already obsessed with 🥹 the world building is so well done and the individual journeys that Dante and Adrian have in this book were entertaining and kept me on edge the whole time wondering what would happen next. my jaw dropped MANY times throughout this story! I need the 3rd book immediately!!
So grateful to A. N. Horton for this world and for allowing me early access to this book through an e-ARC 🫶🏻 now i wallow and wait for book 3 😂🥴
I received an advanced reader copy (ARC) of this book via the author. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. This is my honest review.
I loved the first book and thought the plot was genuinely unique to the many other fantasy books I read. The second book is a complete transformation in terms of what happens in the first. In my head I had an idea of what I thought would happen but I was completely wrong. I thought the writing was really clever and well thought out, the world building was fantastic too.
Spoilers below:
I wanted to see Dante really grovel for what he did for Adrian but I felt like that didn't really happen until they met face to face which happens very late in the book in my opinion. Personally thought the first half of the book didn't immediately work with the cliffhanger from the first book, and it took half the book to sort of understand the characters thought processes as to why Dante made his decision, and even so thought it was quite a weak explanation and suddenly he still loves her. Didn't love some of the first half of the book in Dantes perspective and really wanted to get to Adrian's side. I think making Dantes perspective seems weak was intentional.
To me this wasn't really a romantasy book, the romance parts were very very limited. And zero spice. I was craving a lot more especially because we started to build the tension between Adrian/ Dante/Gryfon. But maybe that is lined up for book three, I really hope so!!! I want to hear more from Gryfon for sure!
4.5 Stars. Rounded up because I love an adventure romantasy and the FMC is wonderful. There is a lot to like about this sequel. We move far beyond the first book into a new whole new world for us and the characters.
What I liked: - The plot. It was quite unique and unpredictable. I didn’t really know where it was headed. We were given answers to plenty of questions from book 1. Though there are lots left and now new ones.
- The dual POV. I really liked following Adrian and Dante as they are dropped, literally, into new worlds they must navigate. I think Adrian’s POV were stronger. Dante’s were filled with maybe a little too much internal dialogue, but nothing I found to be too much or annoying. The POVs would alternate Adrian then Dante. I loved the dual storylines we got showing these two are diverging and converging on each other while growing into their new lives and circumstances. Almost every chapter left on a little mini cliffhanger that you then had to wait a full POV to get the answers to! Created good tension and anticipation.
- The characters. I really loved Adrian, she is a great FMC. She’s not perfect, but is loyal and firm in her mission to help those she loves. Dante has quite the character growth in this one. I also enjoyed all the newly introduced side characters.
- Gryphon, I anticipated someone like him after finishing The Third Ring, but there are still so many questions! I can’t wait to hopefully get way more of him in the next book.
What I didn’t love: These are more knit picky but bothered me a bit - There was some gaslighting of the FMC. This is absolutely not a unique occurrence to this book. It happens constantly in Romantasy books. The FMC will have very understandable and reasonable emotions about something that happened to her, and is told by others, usually the MMC, that those emotions are wrong or dramatic. She then just agrees instead of defending those feelings. This drives me crazy. A woman is allowed to be angry without others judging her. Many times this FMC is scolded by others for her emotions.
- The plot needed to maybe be tightened up. It’s hard to describe. I have no obvious negatives about it, just a feeling that it should have been more. We did get answers throughout the book, so thankfully no info dump at the end. However, there were still lots of scenes with dialogue interruptions to stop a reveal from occurring. The use of this plot manipulation is a particular pet peeve for me. This plot is doing a lot! Which I appreciate, but maybe it was too much? Or maybe those all those extra plot points just needed a little boost, maybe a little more information, maybe a little more details.
- There were lots of opportunities for the MMC and FMC to ask more questions. In their defense they did ask a lot, but not enough to satisfy my curiosity. I need answers!
- A little bit of repetition here and there. The history of the Sanctuary was told 3 times. The desert setting travels got a bit repetitive, nothing annoying, but maybe could be edited out.
Overall, this was very enjoyable sequel, I just flew through it. It was so different from book 1. I loved that the author really went for it, and created a different and unique plot. I’ll be not so patiently waiting for book 3.
So thankful to the author for providing this ARC for me to devour!
this was unfortunately a disappointing sequel to what I thought was a very interesting story...
I was annoyed by both main characters' repetitive monologues.
the world building expansion was overwhelming and confused me.
the introduction of new characters out of the blue was not well done imo because I couldnt keep up with the new additions and there wasn't a reason for me to try to care for them.
the plot fell flat... we were only wallowing in guilt and unacceptance and pushing everyone away the majority of the book, which was so boring and made me highly dislike the main characters.
*with SPOILERS* . . .
So now we are following a plot where the fmc is the *only* one that has the "power" to change everyones fate apparently... I wouldn't mind the cliché, if I was able to like the fmc at all, and if the pieces of the puzzle would make it make more sense. but she feels like a very whiny child that didn't get her way, so she's going to make a way, regardless of who she is affecting with her decisions. very selfish if you ask me.
we reunite with her bff that I mourned on the first book, only for her to ruin the reunion by not liking her bff is thriving in his new life?? said bff btw turned out just as hypocryte as her and I didnt care for him anymore.
I was hoping there was anything redeemable from what Dante did, but I absolutely dont understand how he did what he did so easily. that shattered my belief in a possible romance between them completely. and his poor attempt at grooveling was honestly pathetic. his charcater became pathetic in general.
because I was bored with the story I was skimming through it and I completely missed that Gryfon is meant to be a love interest?? so I go back to re-read the part when they meet and saw "silver hair". I may be reaching here, but is this a poor attempt at giving us a Throne of Glass experience in the romance department?? even if he is her fated mate or whatever, I barely know his character and couldnt care less about him because this whole time I have been misled to believe Dante was end game. I was just waiting for them to going back to liking each other or something.
i feel like if we had only had one pov —mainly the fmcs—like in the first book, and had Gryfon be introduced earlier in the book, we could have forgotten about Dante and truly fallen for this "new" love insterest instead. Then I truly would have been devastated by the ending and way more intrigued.
if I remember this series exist when the next one comes out I may read it to see where the story is going, but for now at least the waiting won't be painful.
Guilt. Betrayal. Acceptance. Resistance. Victor. Champion. With the Trials over and their bond broken, both Adrian and Dante find a new world outside of Sanctuary, a world of light and dark, of gods and deceivers, a world torn apart by millennia of war. But how do you trust when you've been betrayed? How do you live when you are drowning in regret? And how do you free those who are imprisoned by lies?
✨️False gods ✨️Found family ✨️Millennias of war ✨️Kickass heroine with scars ✨️Fantastic twists and revelations.
Wow! I had zero idea where this book was heading after the gut punch that was The Third Ring's cliffhanger ending... and honestly, as I read the prologue and chapter 1, I was about ready to rage. Dont get me wrong, I was immediately hooked by the prologue written in Milo's Pov, and Chapter one was fantastic but it wasnt until chapter 2 that i allowed myself to love it, allowed myself to become absolutely ensnared.
I utterly adore that this is written (primarily) in Dual PoV alternating between Dante and Adrian. It allowed me to feel Dante's betrayal alongside Adrian but also feel the guilt, regret, and self-loathing that he felt after also. It gave me an incredible insight into who he is as a separate entity not not just view him as 'The Betrayer'. I honestly can not wait to see how this series unfolds in further books, because the character development is incredible and I feel there is so much more to come from each of them, as well as the others surrounding them. I loved meeting the new characters, and I'm so intrigued by them all. I feel there is a lot of back story to come, and I'm salivating at the thought!
World building is also a major strength in this book. Not only has Horton created such a unique, dystopian city within Sanctuary, beyond, it has layers upon layers of well thought out cultures, politics and systems each having their own separate prison walls made of deceit and ambiguity keeping their citizens in ignorance. And then there is the wider world beyond the Giest's control, a world that is our own, in a far and distant future. Oh. My. God. When I read this, I was l stunned.
I adored everything about this book and really enjoyed how it took a dystopian turn. And just like book 1, this book will stay with me. I can not wait for the next book to come.
The Second Sanctum was a wild ride of unexpected twists in a fascinating dystopian world.
I really enjoyed Dante & Adrian’s perspectives of their different journeys throughout this book. They clearly belong together and I hope in the next book they can start trusting each other again!
The reveals of Geist & the Underground were very interesting and expanded on what we thought we knew about Sanctuary in an impactful way. I’m glad we found out what happens to the culled & was so happy when we knew Darius was alive.
Adrian’s conflict with Darius & Dante’s kidnapping were both twists I enjoyed (sorry, Dante!). I also loved every glimpse of Milo!
My heart breaks for the zver that was imprisoned and Dante had to fight now that I know they’re not monsters at all. I loved how Adrian question and cursed the gods in The Third Ring, so I was happy to discover that she was right all along - they’re not gods at all.
I’m not sure how to feel about Gryfon. I don’t trust him or even really like him, which made the cliffhanger at the end less compelling.I must be too hung up on Adrian & Dante belonging together to even consider him a love interest. I also can’t stand him calling her “little corruption.” She’s not corrupted!! The Zver said it themselves - the darkness isn’t corruption at all.
Don’t get me wrong, Dante deserves to suffer for what he did, and boy is he suffering, but I can’t help but wonder if Dante & Adrian would have a soul bond if the Geist hadn’t tampered with them. I just want them to be happy!
Some critiques: there were a lot of lore dumps, some of them repetitive, and a ton of new characters and places were introduced to the point that it became difficult to keep track of it all. I have almost no mental map of the layout of this world because I can’t keep it all straight!
I’m still eager read the next book and see Adrian get even more powerful, her & Dante become close again, the Zver come to her aid, more of Milo in action and, most of all, the Geist suffer for what they’ve done.
Thank you to A.N. Horton for the ARC of this book!!

“I am a fury you will not withstand, a power you will not claim, and I will not be held by any man, general."
I volunteer to be Adrian’s lover 🤚🏼
I was obsessed in book 1 and now I’m even more obsessed after book 2.
The plot of this book… I have zero complaints. I really enjoyed the magic system , the housing system, the hierarchy. This book is FANTASY.
Understandably there was no romance in this book . Seeing how the first one ended… I don’t blame her for wanting to focus on herself.
I was lowkey skimming through Dante’s chapters but they were also really good. I mean how could you live normally after being so scared to go back to your family that you basically killed the person who gave you genuine love? Oh ok.
When I think of female rage or a woman scorned I will always think of my girl Adrian. Her anger , her loyalty, her power was unmatched.
This book is a continuation of book 1 , where Adrian has finally stopped falling and lands in the place where the fallen go. She’s known as the betrayed , her duties are now to provide for those in the sanctuary, only she’s assumed dead. But of course Adrian is not okay with this , she wants to get back home and see her family , she risked her life , her family , her freedom to please Gods that apparently could care less about her. She embarks on a journey of power , her own power , only she doesn’t know how to even control it.
Gryphon… I enjoyed him but yk he was a bit of a private guy. I feel like we or I was supposed to care for him more than I did. Like okay he’s gone now what?? Now we have book 3 which I assume will revolve around Adrian saving him and it’s like ehhh.
I enjoyed the side characters and how Adrian was able to form bonds , that was a really cute part of the book to me. I also loved the realism surrounding her fall out with Darius , the sole reason she did the trials was for him , only to finally be reunited and he’s just … not the same.
Looking forward to book 3 , I’m excited for Adrian and her powers & I guess I’ll root for her and gryphon 🙄 .

🗡️ ⚜️ Book Title - The Second Sanctum ⚜️ Author - A.N. Horton ⚜️ Rating - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⚜️ Some Genre/Themes/Tropes: Adult Fiction, Romance and Fantasy
I received an advanced reader copy (ARC) of this book via the author. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. This is my honest review.
Holy moly, this was good, NO, better than good! Did I just find a new favourite book of 2025? Yes, yes I did.
We dive back into the incredible world Horton has created, and it expands far beyond the tiny slice of Sanctum we previously experienced. The worldbuilding grows more layered, and so much more as we start to glimpse the vastness beyond what we thought we knew. There is a whole lotta world out there.
We’re introduced to a host of new characters, some of whom I have big theories about 👀. I’m not naming names (no spoilers here 🤐), but let’s just say I’m keeping my eye on a few of them, one in particular. We also reunite with some familiar faces, and I loved seeing how much emotional depth and growth each character experiences this time around. The character arcs are raw, heartfelt, and perfectly messy in the best way. Like, with the ending we got in the last book, how does one redeem themselves after that?
There’s plenty of political intrigue woven through the story, the pacing kept me hooked from start to finish, and the plot just keeps delivering. 👌
And that ending… that ending! I was screaming. Horton, how could you do this to us?! I need the next book immediately (*grabby hands*)
I would highly recommend this book to others. I will be waiting anxiously for the sequel and definitely will look for other books written by this author.
I want to say thank you to the author for the ARC.
Note (How I rate): One is DNF. Two is got there but struggled. Three stars is a good, enjoyable read. Four is an excellent read and five is a comfort read that lingers with me for life. My five stars can be imperfect but to me they hit right.
The Victor. She never would have bowed.
Power.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
The Second Sanctum start exactly where The Third Ring left off, therefore, please be aware, you can’t read this book without reading The Third Ring. This book was truly an exquisite experience. To be completely honest, as a reader, I often found myself frustrated with Adrian; however, the writing in this book is so magnificent that whenever I felt that frustration, I paused and recognized that she is entitled to her feelings and actions. AN Horton did an outstanding job crafting this narrative in a way that evokes deep emotions while simultaneously prompting you to think, hold on, I also need to consider X, Y, and Z. As you delve into both Dante’s and Adrian’s perspectives, you can’t help but empathize with both characters. Not only did she introduce us to an entirely new world, but she also presented new characters that you can’t help but fall in love with. I absolutely NEED to uncover Gryfon’s backstory, and I need to know it IMMEDIATELY. His introduction was fantastic, and the way his role and relationship with Adrian has gradually solidified itself as one of my favorite aspects of this book is remarkable. I am eagerly anticipating what comes next.
