Such a Feral Little Lamb

Rate this book
“There’s enough room for us both down here. I could keep you tied to the bed. Have my desperate little lamb bleating for me.”

Gravesend should be a town like any other. Abandoned. Neglected. Overrun by zombies. That’s why we’re here. We clear the zombies out. Let people move back in. Slowly, slowly reclaim what once belonged to us.

Except Gravesend is different to every other town I’ve set foot in before. Not a zombie in sight. A graveyard, torn apart, that sits below a haunting church. And a scrappy group of survivors who are hiding everything they’ve done to keep themselves alive.

As if we can talk. Every member of my team hides a secret of their own, myself included. For as open as I might be back in the Citadel, aware of the danger but relying on my position to keep me safe, I have none of that protection out here. None of that protection when it comes to him.

Mason is a mystery to his core. He is dangerous, and arrogant, and when he says he wishes to keep me, I believe he means it.

What’s worse? I don’t care how far he might go. I don’t care what truths—about him, about this town, about the Citadel and the outbreak itself—I might uncover. For the first time in my life, I feel truly seen.

I might just let the world burn to keep feeling this way.

“There are worse things out there than zombies”

Such A Feral Little Lamb was not at all what I expected it to be. What starts out as a queer post-apocalyptic zombie horror, becomes… something completely different that I can’t even describe because it would spoil the whole damn book. It wasn’t a bad surprise, just unexpected.

“You’ll never be rid of me, little lamb.”
“No,” I agree. I don’t want to be.

Apart from the genre switch, the romance was also not what I expected. Based on the blurb, I was expecting a dark romance vibe, a bit of D/s, all rough and dirty, maybe some enemies to lovers, lots of kink.

This feels… This feels like being worshipped.

The smut, and the romance, was actually pretty tender. Caretaking, protectiveness, safety — those are the feelings Mason evokes in Isaac. Mason can certainly talk the dirty talk, but when it came to the walk he was always sweet with Isaac, always giving him exactly what he wanted. Worshipped him.

Especially compared to the dark and dangerous plot, the romance felt almost out of place, not only for the softness of it, but because it felt like reading two different books.
And while I thought the thrilling zombie survival horror side was immersive and captivating, the love story wasn’t all that special. There wasn’t much balance between the two plot lines, which further emphasized the feeling of them being two separate reads.

“You will always be safe with me, little lamb. I’ll never let anyone hurt you.”

So while this became quite the different read from what I anticipated going in, I’m not all that mad about it. It was a fun mix of zombie horror, queer romance and fantasy, and while I found the blend a bit jarring at first, I ended up enjoying the weird turn this story took. As for the writing, it was a very easy but enthralling reading experience, and I look forward to reading other works by Alexandra Keillor.

“I’m keeping you. You understand that, don’t you?”

So I’m straight up biased as I really enjoy this author and own all their work. I’ve been following them since they started and their work has improved - style/ editing etc - which has been great to see.

Now, I’m not too sure who wrote the blurb, but I think they fluffed up. I thought I was getting a quite dark kidnapping book in MPOV. Instead I got single POV (not my favourite) and an intense OTT mutually possessive couple. Plus there were perhaps 3 zombie interactions, so not constant fighting for your lives.

Nonetheless once I realised what I was actually getting vs blurb expectations I really enjoyed it. Given the mystery around Mason & Co. in the village it made sense not to have his POV so we could explore the situation via Isaac and how he was interpreting the events around him.

It’s not super sexy, again maybe 2/3 scenes but given it’s a zombie apocalypse environment I’d be miffed if they were at it all the time. The spice scenes were hot though.

I do feel like more background around the mysterious citadel who were in control and their game plan - plot spoiler stuff - would have been good. It felt quite narrow - focused on the village and clearing of zombies with little other info.

I did enjoy though. It was solid, nothing overall wrong, and I’m not a dark book fan so for me I preferred this. I got as an ARC from gayromancereviews.com and this is my honest opinion. I’m pretty blunt so feel free to check out my profile.

This was a strange but fun mix of zombie apocalypse, dark fantasy, and romance.

It’s so unlike anything I’ve read before and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

We start off with a team of hunters sent to clear a supposedly abandoned town only to find that it is very much inhabited and the zombies behave strangely there. Team members start disappearing and all the while Isaac is completely caught up in a web by the one guy everyone seems to fear, Mason.

“I’d never leave you,” he says, and I know he means it.

“You might not have a choice. We live in a dangerous world.”

“And who’s to say I’m not the most dangerous person in it?”

The end got a little messy to keep all the moving parts straight in my mind but I loved the contrast of lovingly possessive romance and dark mystery all set in a deadly world.

!! I don't equate fiction stories to real life. It's a matter of personal taste and what you are willing or want to tolerate in the books you read. We all have different opinions and preferences when it comes to the kind of books we enjoy, so it's important to respect and remember that it's just a book!!

What an unexpected surprise!

I really enjoyed this perfect fall read. Just enough horror to keep my heart race and just enough romance to keep me invested.

Unique premise. A creative spin on the zombie apocalypse trope. I enjoyed Isaac as an MC from start to finish - he is thoughtful, strong willed, and fierce. And Mason? A perfect mystery man. Great side character. Compelling plot. It was eerie and unsettling the entire time which just speaks to the author’s ability to write a great atmospheric horror story. And a twist and ending I didn’t see coming but kept me turning the page over and over again was fantastic!

Such a Feral Little Lamb was hard to put down once I started it. The story wasn't what I expected but it was so good. I won't say much about the story because I don't do spoilers. Just know that the characters, world building, and plot were very well done. I love Alexandra Keillor's books and this one was no exception. I would definitely recommend this book.

💬 My Thoughts:
✨ Okay, let me be real... this book ate me alive (pun intended). Alexandra once again gave us her signature: dark, bloody, and tender.

✨ The romance?? Holy feral lambs. Mason is absolutely unhinged, but also so soft with Isaac. The push and pull of predator/protector, danger/safety... just delicious.

✨ Isaac’s heart is protective, caring, and lonely. He’s grieving, fighting, surviving… but Mason sees the parts he tries to bury, and instead of breaking him, he worships him. Literally. 🐑 I love guys obsessing over each other... mmm 🤌.

✨ The spice... Filthy, kinky, growly, biting (a lot 😏), but somehow still full of care 🫠. They’re perfect for each other; they fit together deliciously in every way.

✨ The atmosphere of Gravesend??? Creepy little town, shadows everywhere, religious overtones dripping with dread. I was obsessed. 🖤 I want to see more of the side characters... they’re all so grumpy and protective over each other, and I love that. I’m such a sucker for grumpy characters with soft hearts.

✨ Please, Alexandra, make this a series 🙏. I need more Mason & Isaac, I need more of this world.

When I saw in my mail that I had a surprise ARC copy of one of my favorite authors I didn't even check to see what it was about I just started reading....

And wow, what a fantastic read... I'm not usually one to read a lot of dark stories but once in a while one grabs my attention... And this one kept it throughout the whole book

I loved the eerie setting, the strange spooky town and its people, full of secrets at every turn.
We're in a post-apocalyptic world, 20 years after a zombie outbreak... Our MC is a hunter and is tasked to clear a town off zombies, he goes with a team of hunters in what's a routine hunt... But which ends up being anything but...

I usually prefer dual POV when romance is a big part of the story, but I really enjoyed reading only from our MC's POV... It added to the mystery and Mason's character was so well written that it felt like I got to know him just as well as Isaac..(Though I'm not opposed to a bonus chapter from Mason's POV)

And the romance was so good, the looks, the medium burn, the tension, and then the possessiveness and obsession of both and how much they enjoyed it.

I have to admit that I was a little lost with some of the explanations at the end, especially when it came to the Citadel, but overall it was a really interesting read with entertaining twists and turns.

POV: single
Tropes: post-apocalyptic world, zombies, hunter MC, mm romance, sppoky town, medium burn romance.
Spice: medium (detailed scenes)
CW: death, violence, kidnapping, homophobic slurs by side characters, gore, rotting zombies.

ARC copy thanks to author

I am a big fan of Alexandra Keillor’s Monsters of London series, along with The Wild Hunt spin-off series, so it should come as no surprise that I was eager to dive into something new. Such a Feral Little Lamb offers something new, moving into a post-apocalyptic world filled with zombies, which had me extra interested in seeing what the author did.

I will be honest and say I had very mixed feelings toward Such a Feral Little Lamb. In truth, my three-star rating is a three-point-five-star rating that I opted to round down. There were many points when I did consider giving this a four-star rating, but the overall did not hit quite as hard as I had hoped. The two reasons for this are pretty easy to identify. First, I did not buy into the romance. The tone of the blurb made it sound like the romance was a much bigger thing than it was. For me, everything else was interesting and the romance felt very instalove for the sake of adding a romance plot. Second, the way things played out was extremely clear from the start. I enjoyed watching how things played out, but I was constantly waiting for a twist. There was never one, just constant confirmations of what I had already worked out. While I did enjoy the overall – in fact, I devoured the story in no time as I always do with the author – I did finish the book wishing things had been explored a little more. It would have been enough to pull my rating up.

All in all, this was an enjoyable read. However, I do wish there had been more to this to allow me to love it more.

Firstly, let me say I got this book from gay romance reviews and this is me leaving my honest review.
This is a brand-new author to me and I’ve got to say I was really impressed. I was kept guessing till the very end. There was just so much going on with the main characters but also side characters like what the hell is going on with Isaac and Dane??? Why was there so much animosity between Isaac and Blake??? So good honestly.
so basically Isaac is part of a team that is expected to go into towns and clear out the zombies ready for them to have human activity again. But when they come to this one town, everything is off. Isaac catches a glimpse of somebody he thinks it’s a survivor but not sure and runs off and then gets attacked by zombies. Thankfully he is saved and then a group of people ask him and his team to come to stay at the church where it is safe so here comes the mystery the man That Isaac saw. His name is Mason and there is this crazy chemistry between these two. Mason is everywhere he looks, and Mason doesn’t like the way that Dane treats Isaac. But Isaac‘s team and the survivors go out to try to kill the zombies but of course so much more happens in this book and you’re gonna have to find out just like I did. There was so much in this book that I was intrigued about, I couldn’t work it out and I really liked that. This book was nearly a five star for me but there was just something holding back but I will definitely be keeping an eye out for this author again. A great Read.

This book is dark, gritty, and completely haunting. Alexandra Keillor takes a broken world and fills it with fear and a strange kind of beauty. Set in the decaying town of Gravesend, this story mixes zombies, religion, and survival with a heavy dose of obsession and control. It feels less like a simple horror story and more like watching people unravel while trying to hold on to what’s left of themselves.

The characters are complex and messy, the kind of people who make choices that are hard to watch but impossible to ignore. The connection between them is dangerous and magnetic, constantly teetering between protection and possession. The “touch him and die” rule adds an extra layer of tension that makes every moment feel charged.

The atmosphere is thick with dread and loneliness. Keillor’s writing is sharp and emotional, never backing away from the darker parts of human nature. It’s violent and unsettling, but underneath all of it is this quiet question of what it means to love and survive when everything else is gone.

It’s a heavy story, but it stays with you. If you like dark fiction that feels raw and alive, this one will hit hard.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

Such a Feral Little Lamb is a mystery thriller set in a dystopian future where humanity seems to have destroyed itself and is still trying to figure out how to pick up the pieces. Of course, there is the zombie trope and themes of us versus them and found family. The overall tone of the book is chock full of tension and it comes from several different places. First, there’s the mystery behind Gravesend’s strangely destroyed and empty graveyard. Second, there’s a growing conflict in Isaac as he falls more and more for Mason, even as his time on assignment in Gravesend dwindles. Third, there are some shifts in storylines–one pertains to members of Isaac’s hunter team and one pertains to the nature of the dystopian future. All in all, this story pulls together several different threads and weaves them into a rather satisfying story that is deceptively complex.

I absolutely loved this book!! It’s October my spooky babes! Even before Oct 1st hit I was really craving something with a darker tone, I wanted a dystopian, after the fall of civilization read and this absolutely delivered. I love a good zombie movie and surprisingly have not had a ton of luck finding many zombie romances so this was a pleasant surprise when I discovered it. Isaac is the guy you want to have at your back in a fight and Mason is the guy you prey you never get on his bad side. From the moment Isaac steps foot into that town it’s like a magnet force was inevitably pulling him and Mason together. I fully appreciated that I couldn’t tell where the plot was going in the best way, (who is the bad guy or guys, ok where did X go, wtf now X is missing to?!, why are those holes there…, wait they can knock?!?! Ok how does Mason have hot water lol) Stuff like that, great mystery plot build up that kept me guessing and I ate it up!!! Love scenes were electric, their chemistry was off the charts delicious. 10/10 absolutely recommend!!

This is totally my fault for picking this one up. I have totally enjoyed the Monsters of London and The Wild Hunt series. They're more my speed. I do NOT enjoy horror, dystopia, or zombies. Why'd I picked it up, I have no IDEA. Although it's pretty clear in the blurb what I was getting into, which I foolishly ignored, I decided to read it because the story was an Alexandra Keillor. If this was my first encounter with this author, I would have missed out on Monsters and the Hunt series. And THAT would be the real horror.
It wasn't the dystopic world view or the zombies, as it turned out. It was the hunter group dynamic and Isaac and Mason's relationship that was the real horror. Quite chilling.
It wasn't a quick read. I kept putting it down, picking it up, thinking it would get better. But I knew since the first zombie attack, where Isaac spotted a grinning Mason, that this wasn't for me. I'd give it 3.5 stars, which automatically rounds up.
I received an ARC from the author and this is my review.

This came just at the right time as a warm up for Halloween. I have not read a zombie book in a while, so I was happy to read this.
Written from Isaac's POV, you can instantly see the danger Isaac was in, the moment he stepped on the train. Isaac just wanted to kill zombies, return back to the citadel with enough money to get his own place. However when he stepped off the train, things were not what it seemed.
With the descriptive writing, I was on tender hooks waiting for something to happen and I could feel the tension coming off the page. The group Isaac was with were all individual and there will be a few that you will instantly dislike and want to be attacked by zombies. The introduction of Mason gave a mystical feel and throughout I felt he was hiding something. However there was an instant attraction between Isaac and Mason, but their relationship was not rushed. Mason's possessive nature gave Isaac the love he had craved.
I really enjoyed this story and I would love for this to become a series

My, my, what big teeth you have...
Feral little lamb indeed. Traveling around and killing zombies as a career choice. As much as he had one. I still quite enjoyed that bit.
The story did not go where I expected it to go, but at the same time, it really did. It was still quite an interesting spin on the zombies and magic, so I enjoyed it a lot.
The characters are a very colorful bunch and definitely keep things lively..not literally though.. There is quite a lot of unaliving happening all around. The plot did give me a bit of a pause, because a lot of it could have been avoided, but oh well. It is what it is and it is a zombie apocalypse after all.
The romance is very much insta-love. A bit dark, a bit obsessive and gritty, but also sweet and protective. That is exactly the kind of romance I wanted to read, so I picked right with this one. A little dark, a little unhinged, but also sweet.

3.5 ⭐

thank you for the ARC.

first of all, I need to say that the cover EATS. it's honestly the reason why I picked this book to begin with. also the chapter illustrations are so nice I love looking at them.

with this being said, this book is quite a strong dark(ish) fiction, but maybe not so much romance? personally, I didn't truly feel the connection between the characters, not to the extent where they'd do the things they did for each other. while Mason was quite interesting, I just couldn't with Isaac lol. I don't really understand what's so special about him tbh.

which is why I think it was a good idea the action was so focused here. I would have rather read about the zombies and the mystery. (maybe a bit disappointing that magic was involved? but that's totally on me, I'm too used to reading EMP attack apocalyptic zombie horrors lol)

all in all, quite nice 👍

“Such a Feral Little Lamb” was a unique and unexpected take on this genre and left me pleasantly surprised. I went in expecting another dark zombie survival story—and instead got something haunting, intimate, and utterly addictive. The writing is raw and atmospheric, pulling me right into the eerie quiet of Gravesend, where every silence feels loaded with secrets.

The tension between Isaac and Mason absolutely sizzles. It’s dangerous, obsessive, and strangely beautiful—the kind of connection that feels like it could save or destroy them both. I loved how the story balanced its gritty, post-apocalyptic world with such emotional vulnerability.

This book isn’t just about surviving the undead—it’s about the feral, desperate ways people cling to being alive. I finished it both wrecked and wanting more.

'His mouth pulls like that wasn’t the right answer, and I struggle to keep up as he lengthens his strides. In the back of my mind, I’m horrified with myself. I hardly know Mason. For all I do know, he’s a threat, or at least wishes to be seen as one.
And here I am, chasing him around like a lost puppy.
I know better than that. I have more pride than that.
Don't I?'

I enjoyed this book. It's an interesting and dangerous world and I doubt I'd survive long. I liked both Mason and Isaac. The story was fast-paced with suspense and tension, action and danger, twists and turns. Really learning who these characters are amidst surviving a zombie outbreak kept me guessing. Who could be trusted and who was dangerous? 4 stars

Words cannot express how amazing this book was. From the moment I began reading i was SUCKED IN. I was kept at the edge of my seat. Heck, I was neglecting responsibilities to finish this bad boy because it was that good.

Mason and Issac absolutely have my heart. I just love how their love stroy was told. It was so different from the usual possessive relationships out there and I think that's what also makes this story stand out–it felt like an out of body experience.

I am definitely looking forward to more from these two MCs, considering how the story ended and man, I am craving more Mason-and-Isaac time even after getting it.

This is definitely a bit different than the usual offerings from this author. I love the zombie/apocalyptic genre and this was a great take on it. The storyline was solid, had the right amount of suspense and gore. I didn’t feel like some of the deaths were necessarily especially if it might become a series. Otto deserved to live!

There were some weak spots for me that kept it from a 5⭐️ rating. The romance while good was a little light and not what I would consider dark- which if fine but not as expected based on blurb. The ending felt incomplete- the train situation needed resolution. Overall though a solid read and very entertaining.

This book is a bit of a deviation from the author's other series but still has all the intriguing plot that sucks you in alongside the romance that I've come to expect and love from Alexandra Keillor's books.

When a team of six hunters are sent on their next mission to rid a town of zombies so people can move back in, they expect to find some zombies to deal with. What they do find in Gravesend is so much more than that. Tag along with the team, seeing through Isaac's point of view as they meet some townsfolk and discover that there is a lot more to the zombie outbreak than they could have imagined.

I give it 4 85 ⭐️

I’ve read all of Alexandra’s books (except Fighting Fate), and I’ve loved every single one of them, but this one truly stands out as my favorite so far.
I love vampires, werewolves, witches, and magic, but we definitely need more zombie books! I really hope this turns into a series, because I’d love to keep following Mason and Isac as they fight to save more survivors and take down the citadel.

Thank you so much Alexandra for letting me be a part of your team.❤️🌺

I was initially put off by the blurb as not my thing but I love Alexandra's writing and had an arc so thought why not! So glad i did as this was a page turning read that completely pulled me in ftom the beginning. Exceptional word building and the characters were spot on. An intriguing storyline with a fantastic plot really was the icing on the cake! Not giving anything away and highly recommend you read for yourself
I received a free arc copy and this is my honest review

An interesting mix of zombies, romance and a mystery about what is really going on with the Citadel and in the past of several of the characters. Mason and Isaac's story is one of fierce protectiveness and possessiveness and it's clear they are meant to be together. I was very interested in finding out what was going on in the world the author had created and very much enjoyed the horror aspects of the story and the closed-in atmosphere the author created.

A HORROR STORY DELIGHT THAT I FOUND INTRIGUING AND MYSTERIOUS.

This book clawed into my mind and didn't let go. Mason is intense and oh so mysterious, and I wanted to know more about him from the start. Isaac, I really enjoyed him and seeing his take on what was going on in the story and his thoughts and feelings. It's definitely a page-turner and a good read!

This was such a good zombie book. not only that but there's magic and necromancers and betrayal as well. I managed to guess some of the plot revelations but that didn't take away from the story at all. I truly hope this turns into a series because I have to know if Mason and Issac manage to bring down the Citadel!

4 stars for first half but 3 for the ending

The suspense was very well done, but the relationship was too insta and the answer to the mystery was a bit of a let down. I thought it was going in a different supernatural direction so maybe my expectations were to blame but couldn’t help feeling it was anticlimactic and somewhat contrived.
