2003: The Time-Loop Device
by David Cornish, M.D.
Out now.

Wow! I was so taken with this compelling time-travel science fiction story that I furiously plowed through the pages, eager to know what would happen to Nolan Emerson, PhD. Nolan is a theoretical and experimental physicist and lead scientist at the CERN particle accelerator in Geneva. Also a professor at the University of Geneva, he specializes in general relativity and quantum mechanics.

Now if you told me -- a math phobic who dropped out of high school physics after one week -- that I would actually "get" this heady realm, all I can say is that Dr. Cornish does a brilliant job of explaining the most complicated theories. He also weaves in a time travel segment that absolutely gripped me. My heart pounded and my breath caught as Nolan and his brilliant girlfriend Sophia undergo an experiment through time.

One charming character I grew to love -- a robot (!) -- demonstrates astonishing advances in Artificial Intelligence. How much of this is really possible, I pondered, and what does it portend for our future?

2003 is Dr. Cornish's most assured book yet. His first three are compelling histfic tales with a medical focus: 1877, about a Northern physician working in the South after the Civil War; 1918, about the flu pandemic; and 1980, about the AIDS pandemic. A retired gastroenterologist, the author ties these previous books together by featuring a physician member from different generations of the same family. It's a device that works beautifully.

2003 is highly recommended for lovers of sci-fi, time travel, and spectacular tales. Hearty thanks to Dr. Cornish for the review copy in exchange for my honest feedback.
