Kennedy Sloane Gets Scooped

Rate this book
Faster than details break in a news story, Kennedy Sloane gets scooped.

On a rainy Manhattan afternoon, career-obsessed writer and news producer Kennedy loses the interview that was guaranteed to catapult her to senior producer status. Hours later, revered and feared book editor Muffin Evans, aka the Manuscript Eater, shelves the publication of her promising debut novel.

Over a night of tears and too many glasses of wine, Kennedy responds to an internet ad for a villa on the picturesque island of Hilton Head. She books a five-week “hiatus from life,” to focus on herself, free from distractions.

However, soon after arriving on the island, J.P. Long catches Kennedy’s hesitant eye. Despite a series of serendipitous encounters around the romantic oasis, Kennedy knows there’s no room in her life for a charming professional golfer turned businessman who is battling his own personal and professional insecurities.

But maybe he’s worth the trouble.

If there’s one thing Kennedy’s learned, it’s that life rarely happens as expected, and sometimes, the best stories unfold when you stop chasing the perfect headline.

Kennedy Sloane Gets Scooped has a fun setup and a fresh perspective on ambition, reinvention, and second chances. I liked the career-driven premise, which gave it a nice summer escape vibe. The story balances humor and heart well, and I can see why so many readers found it inspiring and sweet. Unfortunately, I couldn’t quite get into it. I struggled to connect with the main character, and parts of the story felt a bit slow or distant for me. Still, I think readers who enjoy workplace-to-beach rom-coms with themes of resilience and self-discovery will find it a charming, hopeful read.

I'm just going to level with you: Kennedy Sloane Gets Scooped is a glorious, frustrating cacophony of professional ambition and utterly farcical romantic tension. It's the kind of book you read while constantly making little tsk noises under your breath, yet you can’t put it down because you desperately need to know if the protagonists will ever achieve true professional-cum-amorous bliss or just dissolve into a puddle of journalistic acrimony.

Kennedy Sloane, our supposed intrepid heroine, is simultaneously brilliant and profoundly obtuse. Her commitment to the scoop is truly laudable, but her consistently abysmal emotional intelligence made me want to jump into the pages and shake her until her perfectly coiffed hair came undone. She spends 90% of the book in a state of high-alert paranoia, believing Caila Klaiss, her eponymous nemesis is operating with pure malice. Meanwhile, Caila is performing acts of covert benevolence that should have clued K in, but no, K remains completely impervious to nuance. This whole plot hinges on a profound lack of communication that transcends mere miscommunication and enters the realm of willful ignorance.

The vocabulary is where Caila Klaiss truly excels, giving us dialogue that is frequently turgid with unnecessary bombast. Honestly, sometimes it felt like every conversation was a collegiate debate trying to justify its existence as prose. It's fun, though, in a completely meta-ironic way. You read a sentence and think, "Did they just use that word for a bagel order?" Yes. Yes, they did. The chemistry between Kennedy and Caila, when it finally coalesces, is explosive, transforming their rivalry into a dynamic that is less competition and more mutual veneration. But getting there? It’s an obdurate, circuitous route paved with so much saccharine conflict you might need an insulin shot. It’s an easy, fast read, but one that constantly fights its own pretensions, a delicious contradiction, if you ask me.

When Kennedy’s professional life collapses in spectacular fashion with her losing both her dream interview and her book deal, she flees to Hilton Head for a much-needed break from reality. What she doesn’t plan for is meeting J.P. Long, a charming golfer-turned-businessman with his own set of struggles.
This story was easy and engaging, with the chemistry between Kennedy and J.P. feeling genuine. Their connection was layered with tension, and the spark between them made their clashes believable and interesting to work through. While the ending felt a bit rushed, I found that it was a feel-good read about an unexpected romance.

DNF somewhere in the beginning.
I struggled with this book. It started right in the very first chapter, where I couldn't tell what the FMC's background was. Is she married with kids or not? It was weirdly written, and it left me confused. It was later revealed that it was just her imagination. There were a lot of names and a lot of unnecessary information that didn't add to the story, so I couldn't connect to it. It was the reason I DNF-ed.
I'm thankful for the opportunity to review this debut, but sadly, I didn't connect to the writing.

Such a great read!!! Kennedy (Kenny) dreams of a perfect life. She is an incredibly successful writer, winning an Emmy for her mini series on mass shootings..and another award for an article on police brutality. She has recently pitched her first true crime novel and is set to interview the suspect in a high profile murder trial! She is high on life! But…when life as she knows it unexpectedly starts to unravel, she decides to unplug from her hectic lifestyle and …on a whim… sets off to Hilton Head …on a much needed getaway to reset her life. Quite an adventure for someone who lives by her daily lists and doesn’t exactly know the meaning of relaxation. Kenny surprises herself as she starts to appreciate the slower pace. She meet some wonderful people…and of course there’s a romance …and a misunderstanding that leaves Kenny overthinking the situation and almost risks it all! A great story of disappointments, self discovery, pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone, and realizing you just may have found your perfect life! So good!

In one truly horrible afternoon, Kennedy gets scooped on the story of the year and her dreams of being a published author are tanked. In the midst of an evening of drinking and crying, she stumbles on a vacation rental on Hilton Head and immediately books 5 weeks. It's a sweet story of her trying to fit in her new area and meeting the locals, JP particularly. The writing is a little rough in parts, but the story was good and I enjoyed reading this one.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for a temporary, digital ARC in return for my review.

Refreshing, hilarious, yet poignant! Like a favorite movie you’ll watch on repeat!

This book felt like I was on the most fun journey with a witty and soulful girlfriend. Some of the chapters literally made me laugh out loud. I loved the way the main character, Kennedy, viewed life, after all that she's been through and that growth shows.

The way this was written lends itself to vivid visuals and characters that jump off the page in to your living room. I couldn’t put it down as I couldn’t wait to see how Kennedy's journey ended.

This was such a cute story about second chances and starting over. At one point, Kennedy loses her interview and a bunch of other job opportunities, so she finally steps out of her comfort zone and takes a break from everything and her whole trip ends up taking a totally unexpected turn. There were moments when the book felt a bit slow to me, because the plot moves along pretty gradually.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!

I enjoyed getting into Kenny's life with its ups and downs. The story was fun, the romance was cute, and the island of Hilton Head sounds like a gorgeous place to run away to.
I did think the ending seemed rushed, but overall, it's a perfect summer/beach read.

This one’s filled with romance and a beautiful backdrop.

The authors descriptive writing provides an atmospheric backdrop to Kennedy’s journey.

Caila Klaiss has written a magnificent page-turner, a love story that shimmers with desire, intelligence, and humor. Lush and gorgeously written.

A beautifully constructed, wonderfully intelligent and beguiling read.
