The Mentor's Forge

Rate this book
A weapons master with one weakness. A woman not allowed to marry outside of royal blood. Trials that bring them together.

Thoren spent a century of his ethrean life in the great city of Elpha Zavar. When he hears the announcement looking for a mentor for the next Gift Bearer, Thoren jumps at the opportunity. With masterful skill of any weapon he wields, he knows this job will give him the chance to live a life of purpose beyond the mundane.

Unfortunately, he must beat the other applicants in life-altering trials and face his deepest weakness in order to claim such a rare job. Love was never part of his plans, but his blossoming feelings for the noblewoman in charge of the trials leaves him torn over his desire to pursue such a relationship and the cultural taboo against a union between a common citizen like himself and a royal like her.

I write high/epic fantasy with as much action packed battles as I can reasonably fit into a plot, and all my books are no-spice with strong themes of honor, family, and light overcoming darkness. I'm here to share adventure, edge of your seat moments, maybe some laughs, tears, and heart-pounding thrills.

Finding fantasy with enough action and plot dipped in no spice romance has never been easier, now that I write it. I've been writing my stories for over 15 years, constantly working on them to make them better and better. In the year 2021, I published my first book. Between then and 2024 I published the full trilogy.

As I grew and became better at my craft, with the release of book 1 to a new series within the same world - The Lone Prince: Beyond the Broken Throne in June 2025, I made the hard choice to pull down my first trilogy to elevate the story and re-release them in tandem with The Lone Prince series.

The old trilogy, known as Aodh Generations series, has been revamped as Heart of Fire series. Aodh Generations is now how I refer to any books written within this fantasy world: Marmidon.

This has been an incredible journey and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

"The greatest adventures begin where fear ends." - Tiffany M. Rhys

"Every journey has a start and and end. If we knew what lay ahead, would we have traveled at all?" - Tiffany M. Rhys

This epic fantasy had a no-spice romance, royalty, hidden agendas, high-stakes trials, a unique magic system, a mysterious history, strong friendships, and resilient characters. The immersive world-building was phenomenal, making it an amazing adventure! I loved learning about the history and how it shaped the future. The trials were heart-pounding and had me on the edge of my seat. The bombshell towards the end was a twist I didn't see coming. The romance that bloomed was sweet and endearing, even though it was forbidden.

Thoren dreamed of becoming the next Mentor to the Gift Bearer and traveled to Thyrel with his best friends to participate in the trials. While he's masterfully skilled with weapons, he hides a deep secret.

Princess Dessuithiel is plagued by nightmares of a horrific future and an unknown man who will save it. Her parents don't believe her, but her faithful guard does, eventually. Unable to touch anyone, without feeling pain and having visions, she's hesitant to meet her betrothed and see the future they'll have.

Destiny has other plans for the aspiring Mentor and the Princess bound by duty.
When their two worlds collide, how will their souls react to their forbidden feelings?

This was a terrific book! I'm not super into epic fantasy, but this story, especially the way the stakes played out, was captivating. The characters were heroic and flawed, and I really got to know them throughout the book. I rooted for their unlikely romance the whole way, and as it played out I longed for more just like they did. I'm interested in the rest of these stories, and I think I need to try more epic fantasy! I received a complimentary copy of this book and I'm providing a fair and honest review. Buy it! You'll fall in love with people who are falling in love while fighting their way to glory!

This epic fantasy filled with deadly trials, visions, steampunk yet mythical vibes, and forbidden love, captivated me from start to finish.

Thoren Belfry has spent the last 100 years of his life living in the city of Elpha Zavar. When a call goes out for the next Gift Bearer’s Mentor, Thoren applies to compete. And is accepted. Thoren travels to the city of Thyrel, where the deadly trials are held and where Marmidon herself will choose the next Mentor. Thoren’s strength lies in weapons, but his one weakness could ruin his chance of becoming the next mentor. Dessuitiel is not only the crown princess of Thyrel who is gifted with the power of foresight, but is also the one overseeing the trials. When the visions showing a grim future for her kingdom plague her more and more as the trials and mentor competitors approach, Dessuithiel never expects to be drawn to a particular competitor. Especially the one she has been seeing in her visions. With an unwanted yet powerful marriage alliance unfolding, in the midst of the mentor trials, Dessuithiel has to choose between duty and love, but with Marmidon guiding her, will that be enough?

This story had so many unique elements! From the diverse creatures and kingdoms with their own lore and culture, to the lovely found family, and the elemental magic, it was wonderful to explore. Thoren as a main male character and love interest for Dessuithiel was a green flag the entire time. He was brave, loyal, confident yet aware of his own weaknesses, and treaded his growing feelings for Dessuithiel cautiously, which I loved. And Dessuithiel! She is a heroine that I absolutely adored. Her love for her kingdom, her dedication to the trials, her compassion, and courage to fight for what is right, was so refreshing.

This story had LOTR vibes, a bit of steampunk, and a magic system that is utterly fascinating. I cannot wait to continue reading this series!

The Mentor's Forge is Column 1 in the Tales of Marmidon by Tiffany M Rhys. In my opinion, this story is an epic fantasy with Thorin, who wants to be the mentor for the next Gift Bearer. Princess Dessuithiel has visions and her visions show the downfall of her country. I found that this fantasy has all of the things that I enjoy reading about… evil characters, war, magic and excellent characters. I can't wait for book 2. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

I received an advance copy to this book from Tiffany M. Rhys in exchange for an honest review.

Thoren has lived his life in this great city. However, when an opportunity arises to chart a new path in his life, he jumps at the opportunity. Little does he know the trials and tribulations that stand not only between his wanted profession but his heart as well.

This book exceeded my expectations! As more of story progressed the more my jaw hit the floor. This was the first time I read any of Rhys’ work and I was not disappointed. This book had me laughing and gasping in shock so many times. This book was like nothing I’ve read before. The action, just amazing. I’m a lover of the dystopian genre, and there dystopian elements that I appreciated that stretched allowing me to immerse myself into the author’s world.

I loved how we (the readers) were introduced to the MMC’s friendship dynamics early on and it’s organic. I was audibly laughing at the banter between the MMC and his friends. I loved the FMC’s voice, it really portrayed her elegance. Based on her introduction I was hooked. Rhys’ characters are so lovable, having valid, legit and intriguing flaws as well. She really describes the character’s emotions and I appreciated how it was straightforward at times. I loved how the MMC was defensive over his friends. The longing between the MMC and the FMC was portrayed in such a beautiful way. The author did a good job ensuring the reader wasn’t fond of certain characters and added layers of tension when necessary.

I loved how she explained the land and how it was not just a description but rather how it treated the residents as well. It really tied well giving a deeper purpose toward world I was being introduced to. It was so interesting seeing technology from our world being applied in a fairytale/epic universe. I actually had fomo as I read about the different weaving abilities the characters had.

The narrator was not at all annoying and I appreciated how they were the one’s to translate the world to me as the reader (even more so since this was my first time being introduced to Marmidon). In addition, the narrator really worked well alongside the MMC and FMC’s perspective. Rhys’ description when describing a motion or an environment really served a purpose that added to the story. The MMC and FMC’s meet cute was so adorable and I was audibly squealing. I also appreciated how some of the lore was revealed through the character’s, enabling the reader to learn alongside the MMC at times. Rhys’ really handled dual point of views beautifully and it was well timed. I appreciated how the author didn’t info dump her world and the glossary was helpful in that aspect. I really felt like an outsider looking into the world but in a captivating way. The pacing of the plot was good. The first act gave the reader enough time to immerse themselves in the author’s world before entering the second act. The second act “tested the readers” knowledge from the first act so to speak. There was perfect use of angst in the right moments, and it wasn’t overused at the reader’s expense. The action scenes were written incredibly well which resulted in great payoffs. I also loved how there were other events that happened outside of the plot. They were relevant and added another layer to the story.

There were a couple spelling and spacing errors which I wanted to note of as an ARC reader. It’s safe to assume they will be resolved before the final print of the novel. Additionally, the internal thoughts were distracting at times despite them being relevant to certain situations. There were also some elements that were hard to understand and it made me wonder if that was purposeful. Therefore, we would be receiving the same information as the MMC. However, it could also be because I’m new to the author’s world. It didn’t interfere with my reading of the novel but it was just food for thought. Thank you Tiffany M. Rhys for this amazing opportunity, I’m so glad to be apart of it. I will definitely be reading this book again in the future.

It’s been a long time since I wrote a review. I write by hand, and it feels strange to type this up, yet familiar at the same time. It’s like when a sunny day comes after a freezing week. That’s how foreign the feeling is at first. I assume that’s how Thoren felt at one point in his journey:

Supported
Abandoned
Strange
Loved
Defeated
Brave

One of the few main characters I’ve read who clearly understood both his weaknesses and strengths. He took a great risk in pursuing his dreams; however, who wouldn’t, given the opportunity? Together, we ventured into a new world.

Worldbuilding
I’d like to start with worldbuilding: a crucial element in fantasy. Solid and rich in content, it slowly revealed the inner workings of powers and beliefs. Although it took me a while to adapt to the new vocabulary, it was well worth it. Furthermore, my excitement grew with each new challenge they encountered in the labyrinth.

SPOILER:

Plot
The plot flowed smoothly, largely due to the premonitions or visions of the future. They gave us clues about the climax, but the interesting part was always how the factors would unfold to make it happen. I appreciated the good balance between action and politics.

SPOILER:

Secondary Characters:
Regarding the secondary characters, a special shoutout to ALL of Thoren's friends for their unwavering support. What a great group! Also, the one who left me curious to know more about his past or future was Guan, the loyal protector. He seems like one of those characters with powerful backstories. By the way, although at times I wanted to scream about it, it made sense how unfounded the concept of status and social classes was in their minds, given that they had monarchies and nobles.

Thoren + Dessuithiel
I feel like I can't talk about them separately. Their destinies were literally so intertwined that I have to do this. The POV that convinced me to immerse myself in the story was Dessuithiel's. I loved how, from his position of power, he took concrete actions and did what he could for his people based on his faith. Thoren, on the other hand, set the plot in motion.

I'm usually not a fan of instant romance, but the author's prose made me feel like this book was one of those mystical fantasies where anything is possible. THE CHEMISTRY AND THE YEARNING! I loved it.

Conclusion
An exciting read. Recommended for those who enjoy trials, forbidden romance, prophetic visions that threaten the established order, and a complex fantasy political system. Thanks for the Arc!

I enjoyed this story so much! This is the first book I've read by Tiffany M. Rhys and I most definitely want to read more now! This book had the feel of a great epic fantasy - magical powers, good vs. evil, mythical creatures, human and non-human races, kingdoms and rulers, a world with it's own magical language, and a Creator that rules and directs the lives of those in this world and bestows gifts and powers upon the people. The world, called Marmidon, that the author has created is so unique and interesting! I was fascinated by every aspect of this world and the creatures in it and I found myself wanting to know more and more about it as the story went on. I also really liked both main characters, Thoren and Dessuithiel. They both have huge responsibilities and tasks set before them - her as the royal Lady (daughter of the High Lord and High Lady) of the kingdom of Thyrel and also the organizer/leader of the Mentor Trials taking place throughout the book, and him as one of the contestants in the Trials and possibly the future Mentor of the new Gift Bearer of Marmidon. And yet, even with these monumental responsibilities, they both also have huge hearts and care deeply and selflessly for all the people in their lives (and in the kingdom), including each other. As the Mentor Trials progress throughout the story, Thoren and Dessuithiel slowly grow in attraction, care, and love for each other while also coming to the realization that their lives and their futures have been fatefully linked together. Even though they realize that they will be inextricably bound together by more than just romance, their growing love and romance is gentle, sweet, and beautifully tender. And since this is a fantasy, there's also a great amount of action, suspense, and battles in this story! Every chapter had me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what would happen next and if the contestants would survive each test in the Trials. Without a doubt, I recommend this book and I can't wait to read her next book!

From the first page, I was invested in Thoren's story. Thoren is an interesting character. We know from visions that he is going to be powerful, but the version of him we meet, is not there yet. The book is about his journey as much as it is about Dessuithiel's. I'm very curious about her past, too, and what she sought to know that caused her condition. As I'm sure the author intended, I didn't like Dessuithiel's betrothed. At times he seemed alright, but his blatant disregard for her well-being and behavior at the end cemented my negative opinion of him. Fortunately, our male main character, Thoren, is significantly better, because he genuinely cares about Dessuithiel and tries to be worthy of the mentor role. All of the characters drew my attention with the way they interacted and had their own personalities.

The plot had two moving pieces: Thoren trying to pass the trials and Dessuithiel trying to protect her kingdom while avoiding an unwanted betrothal. At times, the story felt a little far-fetched with the independent realms, and yet it worked. That's what I love about fantasy. There are so many possibilities. The build-up to the final conflict was perfect, and I'm excited to know what happens next. Would recommend this book to people who love epic fantasy with a dash of romance.

Trials, visions, and forbidden kisses collide in a tale of fate and resilience. ✨

Thoren, chosen for the Mentor’s Trial, faces the daunting challenge of competing without the ability to weave, a weakness that causes him pain and confusion. Meanwhile, Dessuithiel is haunted by visions that have repeated for twelve years, visions that lead her straight to Thoren. Their paths intertwine as she helps him unlock part of his inner well, sparking both hope and vulnerability as he struggles through the trials.

Personal Reaction:
It took me a few chapters to get into the story, but once the pacing settled, I was hooked by the blend of friendship, fate, and forbidden romance. Thoren’s determination and the support of his companions made him a character worth rooting for, while Dessuithiel’s conflict between duty and desire added emotional depth. The romance felt tender yet fraught with obstacles, and the trials themselves were intense, with real stakes and sacrifices.

Closing Impression:
This book will appeal to readers who enjoy fantasy trials, visions of fate, and slow‑burn forbidden romance. While not perfect in pacing, the emotional payoff and character dynamics made the journey worthwhile.

I received a complimentary, pre-release copy of this book and am leaving a voluntary review.

The Tales of Marmidon is an engaging fantasy tale blending an epic adventure with a clean romance. A quick read, this book is an excellent introduction to the world of Marmidon, its people, places, with a hint at the underlying system of magic that drives its power. It’s a great entry point both into the world of Marmidon, but also to the fantasy genre. I particularly like that the romance element is clean - a departure from some of the more “spicy” books in the popular “romantasy” genre. This makes it appropriate for readers of all ages.

I’m giving this book 5 stars because I couldn’t put it down! The main characters are relatable and I found myself rooting for them every step of the way. I’m definitely looking forward to reading additional books about Marmidon. I expect each book will get better and better as the history and story of Marmidon continues to grow.

I had a great time losing myself in this story. I'm a huge fantasy lover and no spice romance girly. This book had it all with fantastic world-building, brilliantly written characters, a unique and very interesting magic system, and more. Thoren's struggle to overcome his weakness (with some friendly help) gave him a depth that can be hard to find in a good romantic fantasy. Kinda love(d) him teehee.

The dual POV was easy to follow thanks to the little headers, which I really appreciated. It made it simpler to determine which voice I was reading in. And the ending? You all know I'm a sucker for a great happy ending. Wish granted, but you'll have to read it yourself to find out what happened. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely I would. Come join me in Marmidon, my friends, I'll save you a spot.

The Mentor’s Forge by Tiffany M. Rhys!

Let me be honest.
1. Go to the glossary first, it’ll make things easier.
2. I’m a mood reader, so at the time, the beginning was slightly slow for me, but I’m SO glad I stuck with the story, because come midway through chapter 3, it starts taking off!

Tiffany did an amazing job weaving (pun intended) the right amount of forbidden love, fated love, world-building, adventurous action, and a hero made specifically for that moment, to keep me engaged! Wonderful clean read!

I received an ARC for an honest, voluntary review.

I am loving Tiffany’s world building in all these interconnected but independent stories and I can’t wait to learn more about the adventures of all these amazing characters. Thoren and Dessuithiel’s story was no different and had my heart breaking and warming at various parts.

If you like lots of action and world building, fantasy and magic you will love this book. Some violence/fighting/death/war is portrayed but the language is clean and appropriate for middle school or older ages. I can’t wait to read the next one!!

From the beginning of The Mentor's Forge I was impressed with how the author pulls the reader into the colorful, magical world or Marmidon. I appreciated that I was able to quickly understand the world building without having read the other two books set in this world...and without the book feeling like a giant info dump upfront. Everything was seamless and captivating. The characters and voice are unique, engaging, and heartwarming. I am a sucker for the forbidden romance and The Mentor'd Forge delivered, weaving a romance through a quest of trials.

If you are looking for an adventure, with a lovely romance, in a world that you can get lost in, The Mentor's Forge is the read for you!

If you wanted a Lord of the Rings epic fantasy that featured intense trials and the fate of a kingdom hanging in the balance, this book is for you! What a journey! I really enjoyed reading this book and diving into this immersive world with its different races, customs, and melding of some modern elements with the fantastical magic of the world. I loved watching Thoren and Dessuithiel fight for the future that they wanted, whether that was to go through the trials to become Marmidon's mentor or doing the right thing to ensure that their future didn't end in death.

An interesting tale of sacrifice, friendship and fulfilling a destiny. Both FMC and MMC had issues with their magic yet came together in hardship to find they helped heal each other. Through 3 trials the MMC found himself tested to the brink of death while the process found was to help him and learn to accept their future. Twists came that I wasn't expecting which had me interested in how this tale would end. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I finished this read in a day! I thought it was really cool to see the backstory of Thoren. He reminds me of Legolas from LOTR(it's probably the long blonde hair and heart of gold). I really enjoyed the world building and magic system. The inner well and weaving aspects were intriguing, and it will be interesting to read more about it. The romance is so sweet and wholesome. Dessuithiel, Thoren, and Dundaelon almost remind me of the love triangle in the Hobbit with Legolas, Kili, and Tauriel, except with the roles reversed. I thought the plot was captivating, and I felt engaged through the majority of the story. Again, I think the beginning was a little slow, but overall well written. The battle scenes played out well. I'm one of those readers who sees everything in my mind as I read, and they were vividly descriptive. I also think the plot twist was set up well. I look forward to seeing more from the Tales of Marmidon!

This was an excellent fantasy no spice romance. I enjoyed the adventure, the magic system, and the trials!! This is the first time I have seen a dystopian type trail put in a fantasy book. And it works really well. The characters are very loveable & likable. The world building and relationships feel real and believable. It was wonderful to get join the ride.
