If you’re searching for a heartwarming book about the beautiful bond of sisters and navigating adulthood, this is definitely the one for you!

I absolutely adored reading it. I had no idea what to expect but simply went with the flow. It’s a truly beautiful portrayal of female friendship. Warm and honest and so beautiful to read.

I read Little Women quite young, and even after years — plus watching the adaptation — I’m surprised by how vividly I still remember the characters. The Sharma Sisters instantly reminded me why. At its core, it’s a modern retelling of Little Women, and within a few chapters you can easily tell which sister mirrors whom.

The story follows four sisters — Kav, Ori, Mally, and Trina — along with their mother, Gaya. Each sister feels distinct: Kav is artistic but frustratingly self-absorbed, Ori is dreamy and astrology-obsessed, Mally struggles with insecurity despite her stability, and Trina, the emotional glue of the family, quietly carries the heaviest burdens.

The plot really picks up after the first third, especially once Luca enters their lives and becomes entangled with each sister in different ways. I also really enjoyed Faisal’s storyline — the astrophysicist/star-gazer angle was one of the strongest parts of the book for me.

What I appreciated most was how fresh the novel feels despite the inevitable Little Women comparisons. The focus on creativity and artistic ambition in each sister’s life added depth, and Kav’s thoughts about romanticising underpaid “dream jobs” felt painfully relatable for anyone in their twenties. The novel isn’t built around huge twists; instead, it thrives on smaller emotional moments — sisterhood, jealousy, heartbreak, illness, artistic dreams, and the slow process of growing up.

That said, some plotlines felt underexplored. Mally’s sexuality and romantic arc seemed rushed, and Trina’s ending deserved more space too. Since the narrative heavily centers Kav, the other sisters occasionally feel sidelined. Kav herself was also difficult to like for large portions of the novel — selfish, jealous, and exhausting until the story softened her edges.

The final chapters almost read like a Bollywood film script, and honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if this gets adapted someday. Overall, though, the writing was engaging enough that I finished the book in almost two days. The retelling aspect works beautifully; I just wish some of the more compelling plotlines had been given more room to breathe.

I'm not sure what the odds are on being approved for two UK set Little Women reimaginings on the same day, but clearly the famous quartet are having a moment.
Rachael Fernandes sets her take in London with all four sisters in their twenties. The oldest, Ori, is a teacher, married to her workaholic, barely-present childhood sweetheart, trying to find meaning in the stars. Kav yearns to make her own documentaries but doesn't know what story she wants to tell, feeling trapped by her role as a runner on a popular reality show, Trina struggles to assert herself amongst her strong minded sisters, returning from travelling university feels inevitable but she struggles to make a choice. And then there is Mally. Competitive, combative, focused, always battling with Kav. All four are scarred by the loss of their beloved father a few years before, protective of their mother Gaya. And then Kav makes a new friend, the rich, charming and handsome Luca, someone who becomes increasingly important as they reach their individual crossroads and make the decisons that will determine the rest of their lives.
Funny, poignant I really enjoyed this clever updating of the much-loved novel. Recommended.

I absolutely devoured the Sharma sisters. A refreshing take on the known and beloved Little Women story, it takes a look at the four Sharma Sisters. It’s funny, it’s sharp and it’s an honest portrayal of female friendships.

The Sharma sisters are all exceptionally crafted. Throughout the novel they are bought to life such that you’re rooting for the four sisters (Ori, Kav, Mally and Trina) as if you know them personally. You’ll celebrate their wins and you’ll cry at their heartbreak as you watch them navigate everything life has to throw at them.

A wonderful book that will stay with me and made me reflect on and be grateful for my own sisterhood. The Sharma Sisters may be fictional, but the but the love, loyalty, and complexity of female friendships they portray is not.

4.5 ⭐

Little Women is one of my all-time favourite novels, and so I was really looking forward to read The Sharma Sisters, which is a Little Women retelling set in the modern UK in an Indian family.

I absolutely enjoyed this book. While the storyline largely follows that of little women, the personalities of the sisters and other characters were fresh and interesting. There were also other differences compared to little women, especially towards the end, which kept me guessing.

The sister I related to the most was Mally, a rising star in the corporate world. While she's smart and capable, she finds herself the odd-one out in her workplace in terms of culture and background.

If you love Little Women, this book is a must read!

This retelling of Little Women is a more contemporary version set in London, but works quite well. The characters feel somewhat familiar and yet emerge as uniquely drawn personalities.

The beginning of the story felt rushed, but it became increasingly entertaining as the story telling progressed. With half a point taken off for that beginning, it still gets 3.5 stars. Worth a read if you are a fan of the original story.

Definitely a fun and emotional read. I personally find the start of the story more engaging and things get a bit cheesy towards the end. Adopting Little Women storyline with a modern twist, this book seems to be the brief of being a light read with some emotional challenges/ grief discussed throughout.

I absolutely adored this book.

I loved getting to know the sisters throughout and felt fully invested in each of their stories, rooting for all of them. It's a beautiful story of sisterhood and friendship.

Once I'd finished reading, I kind of just carried the book around for a bit because I didn't want to let go of the characters. I think that probably says it all.

A lovely modern retelling of Little Women. The Sharma Sisters gives a warm but honest look into sisterhood and friendship. The story feels fresh but keeps the heart of the original. A great Tube or beach read.
