The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."
Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.
I love this book. it was so interesting, all the different compitions and skills. I learned a few new tricks from this book. if u like gymnastics read this book!!
My daughter decided I needed to learn more about her competitive gymnastics, so she checked this out from her school library for me to read :D It was a quick and interesting book, though DEFINITELY dated. Even as a person who doesn't know a lot about the sport, I knew that much had changed since the book's publication. I did find, however, that there was a part still VERY pertinent - that of Bela Karolyi. I did find it fascinating that even when this book was published, there were questions about his coaching methods. Considering the current atmosphere and changes in USA Gymnastics right now, it was definitely curious to me that it was allowed to continue. Medals over minds, I suppose.
A great book for learning the basics of early gymnastics. However, since it was published prior to the 1996 olympics, it does not contain current information the judging, scoring, or requirements for gymnasts.
Dan Gutman does a tremendous job telling his readers all about gymnastics. You will find out where gymnastics originated from and how the ancient Greeks had a part in all of this! This is definitely a book made for an older child as it is a chapter book. Gutman placed photos in his book keeping the reader focused on what the particular chapter was discussing. Inserted in the story are four pages, front and back, with full colored print photos. Each photo possesses its own caption letting the reader know what is happening. In the back of the book you can find the men and women Olympic Gold Medal Winners along with the men and women’s World’s Best All-Around Gymnasts. This would be a great book for both children and adults wanting to learn more on the sport.
