After the ending of "Secrets on the Wall," I couldn’t wait to continue this duology! "Lies in the Shadows," the sequel, contains just as much suspense and as many hidden secrets as its predecessor. Once again, there is room for chemistry and romance.
This sequel picks up immediately after the ending of the first book and had me hooked from the very first page. Iris de Vree’s writing style is immersive and vivid. With an eye for detail, extra depth is added to the world-building, and hidden secrets are revealed, keeping the reader curious and eager to continue the story.
One of the main things I liked about this sequel was the personal growth Genevieve undergoes. Although past traumas had a serious impact on her life, she is prepared to face her fears for the ones she loves. Throughout the story, there is once again attention given to the bond she shares with her sister Louanne and Waffles, the shapeshifting golden retriever. However, she also meets new people she learns to care about, such as her nemesis, Maximilian. The romance is a true slow burn and left me longing for more.
This book doesn’t necessarily contain a lot of action, but the mysterious vibes, as well as the quest, create an interesting atmosphere that keeps your attention nonetheless. I really enjoyed how we slowly discovered more and more about the history of the Twelve Cities. The ending is heartbreaking and even had me shed a few tears.
Overall, I really enjoyed this final book in the Twelve Cities duology. I would definitely recommend it to fantasy readers who enjoy mysterious prophecies, complex quests, and lingering romance.

Dankjewel Iris voor deze ARC ♥️
Ik ben weer verliefd 😍 Ik vond boek 1 al fantastisch, maar boek 2 doet zeker niet onder! De romance in dit boek had me helemaal in zwijmel en de fantasy hield me op het puntje van men stoel. Ik heb dit boek dan ook weer verslindt! En dat einde? Geef me 3 tot 5 businessdagen om hiervan te bekomen 🫣 Dit is oprecht een van men favoriete duologieën geworden!

Kan spoilers bevatten – je bent gewaarschuwd!
Vanaf het begin zat ik er weer meteen in. Je pakt het verhaal zo weer op en voor je het weet zit je er alweer helemaal in. Maar dit deel voelt anders dan het eerste: zwaarder, emotioneler en een stuk intenser.
Wat ik heel sterk vond, is dat je niet alleen het “nu” volgt, maar ook steeds kleine stukjes van het verleden krijgt via het dagboek van Frederic Whitefeather. Daardoor krijg je langzaam meer puzzelstukjes van wat er eerder is gebeurd en waarom dingen zo gelopen zijn. Dat vond ik echt een mooie manier om het verhaal steeds verder open te vouwen.
Ook de dynamiek tussen Genevieve en Luke (Maximillian Whitefeather) vond ik heel interessant om te volgen. Je ziet echt hoe hun band groeit, maar het is allesbehalve makkelijk of vanzelfsprekend. Genevieve is soms echt een soort losgelaten projectiel, iemand die snel in de vechtstand schiet, dingen direct voelt en reageert zonder eerst even tot tien te tellen. En juist dat botst én trekt tegelijk met Luke, die juist probeert rustig te blijven en stap voor stap haar vertrouwen terug te winnen.
Dat geeft hun interacties zoveel spanning en emotie tegelijk. Je voelt dat er iets tussen hen zit, maar het is kwetsbaar en allesbehalve stabiel.
En dan… het einde. Nee. Die zag ik dus echt niet aankomen. Achteraf kun je denken: oké, er waren hints, kleine dingen die werden opgebouwd. Maar tijdens het lezen dacht ik vooral: dat komt later wel goed. Nou… niet dus.
Het is niet zozeer dat ik per se antwoorden nodig heb, die zijn er ergens wel, maar meer dat ik gewoon niet wil opgeven wat dit verhaal nog kan zijn. Ik ben er nog niet klaar mee. Vooral dat labyrint schilderij blijft ergens hangen in mijn hoofd als iets waar nog iets achter zit.
En eerlijk… dat einde voelt voor mij niet als afgesloten. Alsof er nog iets onder ligt wat we nog niet zien. Misschien hoop ik dat gewoon, maar ik ben er simpelweg nog niet klaar mee.
Conclusie:
Een intens vervolg dat je echt meeneemt in emoties en twijfels. Door de dagboek stukken uit het verleden wordt het verhaal steeds gelaagder en duidelijker, en de relatie tussen Genevieve en Luke is gespannen, rauw en heel menselijk opgebouwd. Het is vooral een boek dat blijft hangen, niet omdat alles open is, maar omdat je gewoon nog niet los wil laten wat het kan zijn.
En ergens ben ik misschien gewoon een beetje te eigenwijs om het los te laten. Maar goed… dat is precies waarom ik Luke en Genevieve ook nog niet wil opgeven.

⭐ Review: Lies in the Shadows by Iris de Vree
I absolutely loved Secrets on the Wall and Lies in the Shadows! From the very first page of the first book, I was completely drawn in. It’s the perfect mix of suspense, emotion, family bonds, and action. What touched me most was Gen’s personal growth, it felt so real and deeply moving.
Gen’s trauma and the way it shapes her hit close to home for me, and seeing how Gen slowly learns to trust again gave me genuine hope.
Her defensive attitude and sharp sarcasm make her incredibly human and relatable. I also loved the small details, like the spark between Lou and Ailee. And when “Grandma” died… that moment broke me. The plot twists that followed in both books left me completely stunned, so brilliantly written!
Lies in the Shadows starts with such intensity that I was hooked from the very first page. The pressure Gen faces felt almost physical while reading, it’s described so vividly. The way Maximiliaan gradually opens up and earns her trust through honesty felt almost healing. That balance of pain, mistrust, and the slow rebuilding of trust was powerful and beautifully portrayed.
Thank you, Iris de Vree, for creating such an intense, immersive world. Your writing, the emotions, and the depth of your characters made me forget everything around me, and even helped me feel something within myself. This duology truly means more to me than words can express.

Wat er voor mij minder klopte in deel 1, werd in dit deel absoluut goed gemaakt! :) Dit boek las ik dan ook in een sneller tempo uit omdat het mij zo wist mee te nemen. :) Er gebeurd namelijk van alles en er werden zoveel geheimen bloot gelegd waardoor ik op het puntje van mijn stoel zat. Het boek even weg leggen was moeilijk want het was zo spannend en ik zat er gewoon helemaal in. :) Gisterenavond in mijn bed heb ik dan de laatste hoofdstukken gelezen en jeetje... Ik heb tranen met tuiten gehuild!! :o Gewoon 2 zakdoeken nat van de tranen en dat heb ik niet vaak dat een verhaal mij zoooo weet aan te grijpen. :o Ik moest er zelfs even van bekomen. :) Een dikke duim voor Iris!! :)
Ook in dit deel heeft Iris veel aandacht voor de wereld die ze creëerde en voor de personages. Vanaf het moment dat ik het eerste boek uit had, wist ik dat ik móést weten hoe het verhaal verder zou gaan. Het tweede boek stond dan ook hoog op mijn verlanglijstje — en het heeft mijn verwachtingen ruimschoots overtroffen.
Wat een intens verhaal! Tijdens het lezen werd ik meegesleurd in een wervelwind van emoties: momenten van pure blijdschap, diepe ontroering en spanning die je hart sneller doet slaan. Het is zo’n boek dat je niet zomaar even weglegt, omdat je móét weten wat er daarna gebeurt.
Het einde… wauw. Dat was zó krachtig en pakkend dat ik echt even tijd nodig had om alles te laten bezinken. Het verhaal bleef nog lang in mijn hoofd nazinderen. De verschillende werelden zijn prachtig en levendig beschreven, waardoor je je er helemaal in verliest. Tel daar de verrassende en goed uitgewerkte plottwists bij op, en je hebt een boek dat je tot de allerlaatste pagina in zijn greep houdt.
Een meeslepend fantasyvervolg vol magie, emotie en spanning, dat perfect voortbouwt op het eerste boek en je helemaal onderdompelt in zijn wereld.

Because I wasn't completely convinced by book one, but was intrigued in the story itself, I read book two. The ending was not my cup of tea at all, and I also wasn't a fan of the build up of the story throughout the book.
The main character is again all over the place, doing stupid things and lying her ass off while admitting it could have gone different a few chapters later. Again details in the storyline that are missing or suddenly apear and are common knowledge, scenes that are a mess to follow along and conversations that just don't make sense.
The only thing that kept me reading was the love story between the two main characters, I enjoyed parts of it for sure. But the rest of the story was chaos. Not my type of writing I would read again.

After finishing Secrets on the Wall, my expectations for this sequel were sky-high. Lies in the Shadows not only met them, it surpassed them brilliantly. The worldbuilding is even more amazing in this sequel. Richer, deeper, and more immersive than ever before. The characters feel more layered, their growth and evolution realistic and compelling, making it impossible not to become invested in their journeys.
With every new page, you can feel the care and joy Iris poured into shaping Twelve Cities and the people who inhabit them. That passion radiates through the story and makes Lies in the Shadows an absolute delight to read.
This is a must-read for fantasy lovers.

I had a good time with this sequel and liked it even more than the first installment 'Secrets on the wall'. You follow Genevieve along her journey to revive all paintings. Will she succeed? Or will the sacrifice be too great? And what with the King?

A perfect ending to this duology. I loved the subtle twists woven throughout the story and how beautifully it handled themes of loss and healing. The characters felt real, the emotions hit hard, and the conclusion was so satisfying. Iris De Vree wrapped it all up in the best way possible — heartfelt, hopeful, and just a little bit haunting.

I really enjoyed this two-book young adult sci-fi series. It’s one of those reads that’s hard to put down and easy to get completely lost in. The writing flows well, the pacing keeps things moving, and loooveed the romance. Both books work perfectly together and feel thoughtfully done from start to finish. If you’re looking for a young adult sci-fi series that’s exciting, emotional, and just genuinely well written, this one is definitely worth reading.

O M G, what a amazing story! i was in the book the hole time and the end omg. i was really expecting some other out come. It made me cry so badly😭 i hope just maybe there comes a book 3 where viv and max find each other maybe by the painting she left behind. i don't knowww but i wish they had longer togheter ! Love it🥰

The build up of this book was a bit weaker than in book one. The main character also had the same moment of clarity one to many times.
However I loved the way ending and the extra world building!
