Series Review: ★★★★★
What a legendary series. I’m so happy with this. This is the manga of The Best Anime Ever Created and I’m happy to say it lives up to the hype. It’s maybe not quite as enjoyable as the anime--since it’s lacking the beautiful animation and colours, and some of the gags are funnier in the anime with the incorporation of movement, angles, and better comedic timing--but it’s still definitely up there.

Mob Psycho 100 is about a middle school aged deadpan psychic named Shigeo (aka Mob) and his self-proclaimed psychic mentor Reigen Arataka (who is actually a con artist). With this setup and the author ONE’s amazing storytelling skills, a lot of hijinks ensue and it’s an absolutely marvelous ride that only gets more wild, entertaining, complex, hilarious, and moving as it goes on. ONE is fantastic at unobtrusively subverting tropes and reader expectations, resulting in an experience unmatched by any other series out there today.

After reading the first volume of ONE’s other manga One Punch Man and leaving bitterly disappointed, I was quite apprehensive heading into Mob Psycho 100. Now I’m wondering if all of the problems I had with that manga were due to the adaptor/artist Yusuke Murata and not ONE, because I had none of those same problems here. I also couldn’t find out through online sleuthing which of those series he wrote first to see if that reveals anything, because this manga was an absolute treat.

Warning: The art looks pretty shitty, and you should know this so that you don't get surprised by that when reading this. I personally appreciate the shitty-ness because to me it adds to the humor and underground authenticity of the manga. It reminds me how ONE was a man with a dream and great ideas who didn't let his lack of art skill hold him back from telling the stories he wanted to tell, and who instead went forward and practiced his skills and gained great success while doing so. Nothing short of absolutely inspirational.

This is pretty wild. I mean, for one, the artwork in this first volume is kinda totally crappy and the MC, Mob, is a gelatinous cube.

By all rights I should have put this down by now, but then it goes and makes me laugh. It snuck up on me and kicked my behind. Of course, I saw a lot of connections between this and One Punch Man, which should be bloody obvious since it was written by the same One dude, but it's more than that.

The kid just wants to be good at everything else and he's horrible at everything else, but when it comes to psychic powers, he's almost godly.

Choosing to join a gym club and suck at it? While having as much ability as Jean Grey? It's hilarious. :) It's stupid, but it's hilarious.

Whilst I wanted to love this manga as much as everyone else seems to, I really didn't get any enjoyment out of volume one. The art is extremely unpleasant to look at, with inconsistent proportions and awful line work. Supposedly, it matches the absurdity of the content, and whilst I agree that it is absurd, there's nothing about it that screams entertaining. Unfortunately, this is a big miss for me.

First of all, this is a review from someone who already read watched two seasons of the anime adaptation before reading the manga.

All I can say, it reminds me how toxic the relationship between Reigen and Mob. We all know how he take advantage on Mob and realizing in a way, does Mob even notice that? That’s why something happened in Season 2 between these two give me such comforting closure.

Okay, enough comparing the anime.

The comedy in some can be SO SPOT ON and some only left to be brushed off but overall, I throughly enjoy reading the first volume.

My take on Shigeo Kageyama/Mob being so devoid of emotion is because he have HUGE amount of emotion being suppressed due to his psychic power. He’s aware of that and in a way, he found a way to adapt with it.

The LOL religious cult btw really highlighting toxic positivity on another level. I truly love the chapter, it makes me ponder on a lot of things especially this dialogue between Lord Dimple and Mob. Mob’s line “I think the concept of missing out differs from person to person” and that just make me stopped for a while.

Will I continue? DEFINITELY.

This is an absolutely bonkers manga that’s a lot of fun for the most part. The second and third chapters are a little slow and the last chapter is a little busy but other than that I really enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to continuing the series.

SUPER FAST REVIEW:
“We gotta seize the day and do nothing while we still can!”
This might be one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever read... and I enjoyed it quite a bit.
With it’s humor (including a few easter eggs to this creator’s more widely known One Punch Man series) and simple yet works-for-the-story type art I definitely liked it.
The story however... not bad but at the same time it’s kinda stupid if I’m being blunt and I don’t really know if I could recommend this to many people. If you’ve ever watched a different anime called The Disastrous Life of Saiki K, it’s like that... it’s kinda stupid if I think about what I just looked at for more than 10 seconds but it’s fun as hell in it’s ridiculous way that I can’t really say much bad about it either.
If you like that kinda stuff and can have fun with it, I recommend this. If you want something that resembles a serious anything, maybe not. I dunno. Try it and see if you like it, this review is probably extremely unhelpful but I wanted to talk about this book a bit so yeah, there’s my thoughts.

It was my first time reading a manga so I had no expectations whatsoever.

THE WORLD: It's a fantasy world where there are spirits out in the world that torment people until they are able to go "to the other side". In order to deal with these spirits there are people with super powers called "Psychics" who use their powers to defeat the spirits and make them go away. The story takes place in modern Japan.

CHARACTERS: The main character is Shigeo Kageyama alias "Mob", a High School student who works part-time for a fraudulent Psychic called Arataka Reigen. Arataka runs a business consisting of exterminating whatever spirit is making the client's life miserable and Mob joins whenever he's out of school and receives a tiny salary for his job. There are a lot of characters but other important ones are Dimple, a spirit who considers himself Mob's companion, Ritsu who is Mob's younger brother, and the evil group called Claw. Yes, those are the antagonists.

ROMANCE: No romance that I have seen.

GOOD: It's entertaining. I think the anime makes the introduction smoother and a bit more interesting than the manga. Other than that it really doesn't have much substance to it.

BAD: I'm not used to reading mangas and it probably affected my view but I found it very shallow. There's no definition to the characters. They're pretty much empty. Obviously, more and more things are shown about the characters as you read volumes of the manga but it's a long process. You have to be patient... or you can just watch the anime which does a good job at following the story.

I don't think mangas are for me. I need good 4D characters and these ones are 2D at best. I'm sorry.

OVERALL: 3 stars. It is okay, entertaining, but nothing more. The art is okay, the characters are okay, and the story is okay. Nothing stood out in a good or bad way so it's just bland. I really think people should just watch the anime because the manga is not out of this world.

—P.S. I Love That Book!

This has such an interesting story but the art is literally the worst I have ever seen in published manga.

ONE is really good at coming up with stories. He came up with this fabulous and famous story and also One Punch Man, which is even more famous. This story is so crazy but it can be passed by as unremarkable. The pacing was a little all over the place but it worked out in the end. The story kept my interest and I’m totally going to continue reading this.

ONE seems to be a fan of writing about underdogs, Mob being a prime example. But he does them really well and in an interesting way.

I wish that ONE had hired an artist to begin with to get popular because this was painful to get through. The art on the cover is the best you are going to get from this manga.

Every single angle was painful. The backgrounds were pretty crappy, everyone’s faces were strange and disproportionate (but so funny), and the hands were just plain WEIRD. It’s funny because it’s so bad.

I’m simultaneously glad I was recommended this and freaked out by it.

First off: the character designs are ... not great. They really don't appeal to my sense of aesthetics. Having said that, the story is amazing. ONE has an incredible thought process, developing a pretty complex story from a really silly premise.

The premise of this manga is: what if psychics, spirit mediums, tele-kinetics (and others that can manipulate things based on mind alone) exist? What would the world look like to those gifted with these powers, and what would it look like to those who weren't? Would those with this gift, have an unquenchable desire to take over the world and dominate others (spoiler: they do)? Would those without such a gift look on with envy, or seek to manipulate others for their own ends?

What if Mob (aka Shigeo Kageyama) was one such person, aligned himself with a fraudster in order to learn how to control his psychic powers, but becomes emotionless in the process?

What follows are some of the craziest, most insane storylines I've ever come across... and yet, they've also been the most inspired. Because in spite of the shenanigans, you can't help but feel some degree of sympathy for those who seek to dominate - that is, those usually considered villains - and do it in such a sympathetic manner as ONE did.

Which is why I've rated this so highly. It is such a solid piece of work, that even though the artwork is... not so great, I'm willing to overlook it because the story is so good.

By the same people who brought you One Punch Man is Mob Psycho 100! It is an interesting story and another story I saw first as an anime. But the school politics thing just does not interest me. Otherwise a great read.

Mob Psycho 100 is a quirky story involving an overpowered, but somewhat oblivious main character. It is a lot like the creator's other work, One Punch Man, but with different powers and a slightly different setting. There is a lot of potential, but I am having a hard time with the art. It feels very juvenile and unrefined, and it made it hard for me to get into the story.

-Read for 2019 YA Reading Challenge-

I read One-Punch Man, Vol. 1 by ONE and I really enjoyed it. Like, immediately binged as much of the series as I could get my hands on and am still currently invested it in. - When I was given a copy of this book (thank you Alisha) I was optimistic as I had a lot of faith in the author... I have mixed feelings at this point.

The art was the supreme disappointment in this book. Yusuke Murata absolutely ruined me for reading a manga like this. The standard set in O.P.M. was high and all the weird, sweating people in this book were really distracting. It wasn't just less dynamic art, it was bad quality. Lots of sweating, vague/featureless people, minimal panels... it all felt like a let down.

The plot and story are fine, but again, this book didn't grab me the same way and I found myself really distracted as such. I wholeheartedly contend that you should judge an author's work individually and let each book/series speak for itself. That said while this might have had a lot of the funny, playful tone of O.P.M., it also doesn't have the same relationship dynamics. The characters are more stilted here? I think that's what I'm trying to say.

I'll likely read Book 2 at some point as a lot of people seem to enjoy this series and I want to give it a chance, but first I have to wash the taste of this art out of my mouth.

This bounced off of me about a decade ago, but I had heard such amazing things about the anime recently, and couldn't remember what it was that had repelled me, so I figured it was time for a reassessment. Upon a second reading, however, I can only assume that the anime must have INCREDIBLE animation because there's no way the series could rest on its art, writing, plot or characters.

The cover is a complete lie, for one thing. Within the book itself, there is no real action, and the art is almost aggressively unpleasant to look at. Every single thing is off-model ALL. THE. TIME. and the characters who are supposed to be attractive are, at best, bland-looking. The series itself seems to be a combination of "slice-of-life" and "gag-a-day," but with long, slow stretches of...nothing. Things technically DO happen, but they never lead anywhere. And the comedy misses far, far, far more than it hits -- like at a 90% miss to 10% hit ratio. Only a single panel actually elicited anything approaching a chuckle from me, and the more I remember it, the less amusing I find it. The characters certainly EXIST -- but that's about all I can say about them.

I'm told that things pick up later on, but based on this first volume...oof. There's a reason I forgot everything about it after my last reading. Maybe the anime cut out or condensed a lot of this? Maybe they decided NOT to make everything ugly or bland? This was rough. I'll give it another volume, but again...oof.

1%, 10%, 99%, 100%!

Haha, this was as funny as I had hoped it would be. I loved the anime, and I am glad the manga is just as fun (and it seems the anime did a fantastic job on following the manga). Thanks Carlsen for licensing this volume and bringing it out in the world!

Say hello to Mob, or Shigeo. A psychic/esper with a giant power lurking inside of him. Watch out if he reach 100% and shows some real emotion, no one can stop him then! Yep, normally Mob keeps away from showing emotions and while this makes him a bit bland and at times a bit annoying, I can imagine why he keeps his emotions at bay.

We see Mob as he makes it through his daily life. Working for Reigen (a guy who pretends to be a psychic/medium), finding a club so he can become popular (yes, even though Mob doesn't seem to be interested in much, he has a girl he wants to impress and she falls for sporty guys).

There is one big battle near the end of the volume, which will bring a, at times annoying, new character. Dimples. I had a big laugh at the cult and what it did/tried to do.

Since the anime followed the manga, I am guessing there won't be too many surprises along the road (well, up to chapter 50 which is where the first season ended). But I am still very much excited to reading this manga. I want to see all the characters, see Mob's brother some more, see our weird hairdo guy (we already saw him for a short bit in this volume).

The art is pretty terrible, sorry, but it is the truth. But for some reason I didn't mind it that much. If anything it made everything even funnier to read. :P

All in all, I had a lot of laughs while reading this one, and I can't wait for Carlsen to release the next volumes.

I LOVE THIS. I love that Mob is such a relatable character in a sense minus the psychic ability. He was raised in a very supportive family from the interactions i see between him and his younger brother. The way he suppressed his emotions because of his overpowering psychic was actually very sad. He was unable to potray a real emotion since it will cause chaos so when that page where he fill up to 100% of emotion level, i felt so satisfied. THE BEST PAGE EVER AND THE MOST EPIC SCENE. Love this sm

As part of my 2025 year of friends recs

This is a fun start to a manga series. The art style is pretty rudementary but that is something I was warned of prior to starting. It didn't affect my enjoyment of the volume too much... It mostly made me just wonder why everyone was so sweaty 😂

The smiling cult was genuinely unnerving - though it's fun to see the disembodied spirit head of it's leader following our protagonist around. I'm sure it'll lead to some interesting interactions further in the series

When an awful con artist "medium" comes across real supernatural phenomena he exploits the telekinetic powers of his stupid, oblivious and emotionally stunted apprentice to fight them. Like One's One-Punch Man, Vol. 1, I find the story and art too crude and heavy-handed to enjoy. Strong pass on reading more volumes.

I love the art in this manga and humor that I didn’t expect. There were several times I laughed out loud. I hope that mob can figure out some balance while being tugged in multiple directions.
