This one was a bit of a mixed read for me.
The world building was definitely the standout. It has that sweeping, layered feel that reminded me a lot of Dune, but written in a way that feels more accessible and YA-focused. The political tension, the idea of power hidden beneath something shiny and desirable, and the slow unraveling of truth were all really interesting. I liked the concept of Bosch and the rebellion beneath it, and there was clearly a lot of thought put into how this world functions.
Grey was an interesting main character, especially with her internal conflict between loyalty to her mother’s legacy and her growing feelings for Edmund. I liked that she was torn and questioning everything she believed. Edmund had that classic revolutionary charm, but I found his character a little predictable. Sy, on the other hand, was probably the most compelling to me. His quiet loyalty and underlying feelings added a layer of tension that I wish had been explored even more.
The romance itself leaned into that intense, slightly chaotic YA dynamic. It was emotional and messy, which fits the story, but at times it felt rushed, especially considering how high the stakes were supposed to be. I wanted a bit more development to really believe the depth of the connections.
Overall, I enjoyed the ideas and the ambition behind this story, but I think it tried to do a lot at once. If you love YA with political intrigue, rebellion themes, and emotional romance, this might really work for you. It just didn’t fully hit the mark for me.

I'm honestly so surprised I haven't seen much hype around this amazing YA book! The writing style, setting, characters, and plot draw the reader in immediately and I felt engrossed in their world and efforts to bring the corruption surrounding the glitter trade to an end.
Glitter is a type of "dust drug" discovered in the earth that causes hallucinations and euphoria, so it's become a highly popular commodity that has led Grey Shima's country into wealth and power. Currently her mom is the head of the glitter trade, however Grey is against the violence and corruption created from it. However, the anti-glitter group she joins ends up being just as corrupt as it's rival!!
The politics and conflict in it sometimes gave me Dune vibes, and honestly this book is more accessible than the Dune books. So if you're a fan of the Dune films or similar politics and intrigue, you definitely need to read this book!

This is such a heartwarming story of nostalgia, love, memories, and resistance. When your world is falling apart around, it’s ok to pick up the pieces and head in the opposite direction. Stay true to yourself.

For the Love of Glitter: A Grey Shima Adventure

This one started a little slow for me. I was intrigued, but not addicted, and then the last 50% happened.
I finished the second half in one sitting.
This story both fascinated and frustrated me, in a way that I actually think speaks to how realistic Grey is as a character. She’s almost seventeen, stubborn, idealistic, and deeply in love, suddenly standing at the center of something far bigger than herself. Of course she makes messy decisions. Of course she doesn’t see every red flag. She’s young. And that felt very authentic.
The love interest… I will simply say I had thoughts.
What really stood out to me was Grey’s support system. Her mother and her husband were incredible characters, strong, layered, kind, and grounded. And Sy? Absolutely charming. His steadiness, devotion and his own growth, added so much to the story.
Grey is brilliant, but she’s also young, and I loved the coming-of-age aspect of the story. Watching her question her training, her loyalty, and her own heart made the political and revolutionary elements hit harder.
I was genuinely surprised by some of the darker developments. They raised the stakes significantly and kept my attention.
Overall, this is a strong YA speculative romance with rebellion, betrayal, and emotional growth at its core. I really enjoyed it.

I’ve written this review, or at least a version of it, no fewer than five times. Every attempt seemed to either say too much or not enough. So I’ll start here: For the Love of Glitter by Sarah Branson was absolutely nothing like I expected, and that turned out to be one of its greatest strengths.
At the center of the story is Grey Shima, daughter of Master Commander Kat Wallace. Since childhood, Grey’s future has been carefully mapped out: graduate, enlist, and serve just as her mother did. Standing beside her is her best friend, Sy, whose loyalty to Grey runs deeper than friendship, though Grey remains unaware of the feelings he quietly carries for her.
As Grey begins to uncover the darker realities surrounding “glitter,” her worldview slowly begins to fracture, especially in conversations with her mother. Everything she once accepted without question becomes more complicated. When Grey and Sy attend an anti-glitter rally, Grey is drawn to the movement’s charismatic leader, Edmund, a passionate revolutionary determined to dismantle the glitter trade entirely. Caught between duty, love, rebellion, and expectation, Grey is forced to decide which voice she is truly willing to follow.
Branson crafts a cast of layered, vulnerable, and deeply human characters. Grey is strong-willed and privileged, yet genuinely driven by the desire to create change. Her greatest strengths, however, also become her weaknesses, particularly when emotion begins to outweigh reason. Sy is quieter and more reserved, the steady presence supporting from the background, while Edmund is outspoken, controversial, and impossible for Grey to ignore. The introduction of an outside factor injects the story with urgency, pushing both the characters and the reader to confront time, choice, and connection through a far more fragile lens. None of these relationships feel idealized or overly polished. They are messy, complicated, and painfully real.
For the Love of Glitter moves with a steady, confident pace, relying less on explosive action and more on slow-burning emotional tension. Grey’s internal journey is what truly drives the narrative, while the concept of glitter itself carries deeper themes tied to control, escapism, and perception. The novel’s power lies not in spectacle, but in the emotional weight beneath the surface. Readers are invited to question what they have been taught, examine the cost of choosing their own path, and consider the consequences that inevitably follow those choices.

This YA dystopian romance book follows the headstrong daughter of a political leader as she learns about first love, loyalty, morality and rebellion. It’s technically the second in the Grey Shima series, but can easily be read as a standalone.
Grey knows her political views differ from her mother’s. Her mother endorses the trade of ‘Glitter’ (a drug known for its euphoric effects, which also has a range of other uses) whereas Grey, having seen its negative effects, thinks the whole industry should be shut down. What follows is a series of small rebellions, as Grey tries to balance her family life with her beliefs. When she and her best friend Sy attend an anti-Glitter rally, she becomes involved with their charismatic leader. But does he really want her, or just her family connections? And will she notice the way Sy feels about her, or will he be relegated to the friend zone forever?
I enjoyed this - the writing style is engaging and clever, and the world building, centred on post-apocalyptic trade, is interesting and well thought out. I like the different points of view, and how nothing is black and white for the characters. And despite the fact that I never really love a love triangle, so found aspects of that plotline frustrating, it’s a good representation of teenage intensity, infatuation and the challenge family dynamics can be. It’s also a good warning against extremism, misogyny and manipulation, and an encouragement towards intelligent awareness and supportive friendships.
Overall, if you like dystopian/political YA with strong female characters and coming-of-age moments, this series will appeal to you.

What an inspiring YA sci-fi story!!
I loved how this book was not at all what I expected! The more I read the more I loved it, and the more I was surprised by how emotional, inspiring, and thoughtful this book really was.
We meet Grey in the beginning as she introduces us to Glitter. I liked that glitter didn’t turn out to be what we expected, because not everything truly is as it seems. And I loved how from the beginning we see Grey evolve and really hone her own anti-glitter stance. Her story was a roller coaster in many ways, and it was both exhilarating and anxiety inducing. I really proud and protective of her by the end.
I also really enjoyed the differing POVs throughout the book. It kept the story fresh and constantly interesting. And it kept me on the edge of my seat as the stakes got higher and I got more attached. Oh and I LOVED how vivid, imaginative, and fragile this post apocalyptic world was. It made the whole book pack that much more of a punch as we moved along.
Overall, this was a heartwarming and emotional story of trust versus truth, nostalgia, first love, loyalty, memories, resilience, revolution, self discovery, and rebellion. Highly recommend for your next YA or sci-fi read!

I absolutely devoured this novel in one sitting! It started off pretty slow but we soon got into the action. We follow Grey Shima, daughter of the Master Commander of Bosch. She is anti-Glitter, which is exactly what her countries trade is.
We follow Grey through ups and downs, joining an anti-Glitter movement which throws her many curveballs. The story kept me on my toes with lots of twists and turns. I always had my suspicions of certain people, but I don’t want to give you any spoilers!
For the Love of Glitter deals with some difficult and interesting topics. It highlights the difficultly of being a woman in power and how men think they can easily use women as pawns (I have learnt through my job that this is not the case, and Grey does too). The is also a homophobic character, but they are shut down by another character which is appreciated.

Such a different read than what I normally read, I love the dystopian vibes it gives off. It’s a slow start but the main character Grey being only 17, so young and still impressionable. But choosing her own path from her believes and not following the training she was raised on was really something. I also love that it shows you how the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, when she realized corruption can happen on every side .
Plus the romantic aspect and how Sy is clearly in love with grey but I also love Edmund and Lorraine and I don’t want to give anything away but this is deff a perfect ya book to read!

I was super excited when I received this copy and I enjoyed reading this. It was an engaging dystopian read that had interesting political tension and moral conflict. I felt like it really balanced the excitement and consequences of rebellion which kept my intetest piqued.
I'm not a huge fan of a love triangle, no matter how small, but I do feel like the romance was a little bit predictable in this, which I did enjoy.
If you like YA with dystopian vibes, this is a great book for you!

ARC - 4.5 stars rounded up - I throughly enjoyed this book!! It wasn’t something I would normally pick up but I am glad I read it. The story building and learning of New Earth traditions was well written and easy to follow. The characters were very likable, and the family dynamics and hardships really pulled on the heart strings. I think this is a well-written and enjoyable YA novel and would 100% recommend.

This book was such an interesting read and I loved the political plot! I found the whole drug concept so fascinating and loved the inner conflict Grey went through because of her beliefs and her family bonds.
When I say the romance in this book had me STRESSED I’m not exaggerating, honestly all I could do was panic over if Grey was being manipulated and if everything would fall apart😂
Saying that I loved how the political plots bled into the romance and helped cause drama and tension. However there was ALOT going on for such a short book, there was a part of me that wished it was actually a series or a bit longer so it gave the play space to breathe

grey shima is a girl that knows what she wants, stands up for what she believes in and won’t let anyone get in her way! however, when she rebels against her mother she soon realises that maybe mother does know best, and following after a guy and getting caught up in them isn’t always what it seems!
i really enjoyed this book, it was easy to read, fast paced and full of rebellion. i also have to give a special mention to sy because he’s just so loveable 🥹

This was an interesting concept for a sci-fi YA story, and I applaud the author for all the creative thinking and details that went into her world building. From growing tensions between Grey and her mom, as well as between her and her friend Sy, to political drama and a new love interest, there’s a lot going on. Readers can expect a thrilling ride as they journey alongside Grey and the rest of characters - there’s something for everyone in this book.

I was sent a gifted copy from Sarah Branson for my honest review. I enjoyed the book first and foremost it was a big stance with some political tension but this is a young adult book. The characters that caught my attention was truly Grey . To see how she was struggling with who she is and wanting to stay faithful to what her mother had for her and showed her was very big and to me seems to be a big root of her issue. To see how her feelings grew for Edmund but knew that he was in a way forbidden because they both believed and saw things differently. I felt that it had just enough of tension and even some banter. Sy was interesting and I saw how he stood and remained faithfu he really was that best friend and that ride or die but there was also a sense of feelings and how he wanted to be a protector for Grey. I felt that this book has a good level of romance and it was a book that I would suggest to someone who loves the world building and even someone who would love knowing and reading about some parts of rebellion in there books.
I am glad I was able to enjoy this book and I am so thankful to have been given the opportunity to read this .

For the Love of Glitter took me by surprise! I’m stunned that this small book could be packed with such a punch. I found myself not wanting to put it down because I really enjoyed the characters and the suspense. I thought the ending was perfect and loved the twist. This book was such a pleasant surprise. While it started a little slow for me, about a third of the way in I was fully invested and couldn’t wait to see where the story went. We have multiple POVs which was so interesting to see everything unfolding from every angle.
If you’re into book that have a strong coming of age, self discovery, and finding your voice kind of vibes then this is your book. It leans more toward YA sci-fi, but the writing is still beautifully done and emotionally grounded. I feel like I really was able to connect to the characters Grey, Sy, and Edmund. All of the characters are navigating their own internal struggles, learning who they are and how to let go of the versions of themselves they’ve outgrown. They are trying to decide what voices in their heads to listen too and learning how to trust themselves and their judgement. Watching each of them wrestle with identity, change, and growth was one of my favorite parts of the book. I don’t think I would have connected as well with this book if it weren’t for the roots of it and the struggles the characters face being so realistic to what most people go through. Watching Grey decide what she wants for herself and who she wants to be as well as who she wants to be with, as a woman her struggle was very relatable.
I did go in expecting a bit more action and intensity, so I was slightly disappointed on that front but that really had less to do with the book and more to do with me being a major mood reader. That said, had I known going in that this was more character driven than action packed, I would have been perfectly happy. So while the heart of this story is not constant fighting, the author tells a really great story and really does a great job talking about struggles as a young adult trying to navigate emotional growth, self worth and connection. Overall, I really loved the message behind this book and I would recommend it for anyone looking for a feel good coming of age story.

For the Love of Glitter is a multi POV post apocalyptic YA book. The best part of the book is the characters. They’re all very different, layered, and make relatable choices give their ages. The plot was interesting and intense at times, although the pacing was a little off for me. I do appreciate the Branson introduced some very adult topics in an accessible manner particularly surrounding gender roles and how easy it is to be influenced by people in power. I do with there had been more world building and background woven in to the story. Overall, though, it was a quick, enjoyable read.

Wow, this book packed a punch is about 250 pages! This read is a YA speculative fiction but included a little bit of everything from first love, betrayal, and fighting for what you believe in. It also has themes of religious zealotry and misogyny which are very pertinent to our current state of the world. I really wanted to shake some sense into Grey, the FMC, during the course of the book but I also had to remember that she is 16 and still had so much to learn and navigate. Sy seemed like such a sweetheart and I definitely felt the heartache of unrequited love. I would have loved to see a little more action around the final climactic scene but overally, really enjoyed this YA read!

Grey is very outspoken about how she thinks the whole industry should be shut down and begins to attend rallies and ends up involved with Edmund, the rally leader.
Meanwhile there is her best friend Sy who is always there for her but struggling with the heartache of unrequited love.
I really enjoyed the political side of this story more than the love triangle, but the post apocalyptic trade and the resistance plotline kept me interested.
If you enjoy YA with rebellion and romance with a strong willed FMC this series is for you.

Glitter is not AT ALL what you think it is. It’s from a fungus, and usually sold as a…. drug. So for it being the livelihood of an entire population… Grey, our FMC, thinks it’s simply aberrant. Even if her mother is the master commander of Bosch, their island.
In the book, we experience Grey consolidating her anti-glitter opinions with people who think like her. We live through her first love, with its ups and downs. We watch her grow.
The book is a roller-coaster of emotions and full of action that will leave you biting your nails in anxiety.

Okay, I’m going to be very honest with y’all. I DNF’ed this book. I know. I know. But please hear me out.
I really liked this book at first. You could even say that I loved it. But as the story went on, it just got unbearable. I hated seeing Edmund go to the dark side and start dragging Grey down with him. And Grey was SO ANNOYING!!!! She even stopped contacting her friends just because she had a bf. She didn’t even TRY to find a balance.
Then we have the whole blues church thing. (I don’t even care to remember the name lol) I understand that they’re supposed to be bad people. But WHY are they sexist?! There are other ways!!!!! Then Edmund started following in their footsteps…. Ugh.
So yes. I did not find the strength or reason to finish this book. Maybe you will, though!

There’s something about this genre that just feels honest. The emotions are big, sometimes dramatic, sometimes messy, but they’re real. And this book reminded me of that.
Grey’s internal struggle, I felt that. Being pulled between the life you were raised for and the feelings you didn’t plan for? That tension felt believable. I liked that even with the post-apocalyptic setting and political resistance happening in the background, the heart of the story stayed personal which was about loyalty, love, identity, and figuring out who you are when everything around you is shifting.

This book reminded me of the structure and tone of Letters of Enchantment. With short, character driven chapters that keep the narrative engaging while gradually revealing more about each character. I appreciated the slower pacing, as it allows readers to become more invested in the characters and their development over time.
The protagonist, Gray, is a compelling character who is still growing on me. She has strong leadership qualities, loyalty, and a fierce spirit, but her impulsiveness and quick judgments can sometimes work against her.

There's a huge nostalgia factor to this book that you can't find in many new books nowadays. The sci-fi/dystopian/romance books are few and far between, so reading this felt very refreshing.
I will say that there were some aspects of the book that I did not quite enjoy, such as the love triangle, but that's just my personal preference. The story was unique, and I'm curious how the rest of the story would come along.
