Morgan Parker

13 books305 followers
Morgan Parker is the pen name for a shy and introverted former banker. Given the nature of his former career and his unique childhood upbringing in a trendy, white-collar town West of Toronto, Mr. Parker made up plenty of stories to stay employed and to avoid the responsibilities of adulthood. His novels are a product of those stories.

Mr. Parker believes that all great novels involve realistic characters, motives and love stories. He tries (really hard) to emulate his favorite authors while writing his own novels. He stresses that all of his tales and characters are fictional in nature and welcomes all kinds of feedback, even the worst kind, so that he might continue to develop and grow as an author.

When Mr. Parker isn't writing, he likes to read and watch movies. As a serial napper, he has been known to convert corporate prayer rooms and quiet areas into common siesta zones. He believes in hibernation.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Morgan Parker is a nom de plume for a man of mystery and former Canadian banker who has found his new career. His latest book, Violets and Violence, is a home run. Violets and Violence is an intensely intriguing thriller that is set primarily in Detroit.

This story is rich with detail, and Mr. Parker masterfully added layer upon layer as he spun his story. I was so deeply engrossed in the plot that like a member of the audience at one of Violet’s magic shows, I missed the small details that might have given me a clue to the illusions in the story.

“Magic happens in life’s seams, the tiny space, like this, that exists between the moments that count.”

Just as the latest player, Carter Borden, learns about Violet and those who surround her, the reader slowly gets the details on all the characters and how they are involved. By slowly, I don’t mean it wasn’t done well. On the contrary, Mr. Parker’s slow-drip of detail kept this reader’s senses heightened, glasses on and nose in book. I could not put this book down! That slow peeling back of the characters personalities, backstories and possible future amplified the mystery and suspense in the story.

The characters in this riveting tale are fully developed and complex. The story is told from the dual perspectives of Carter, the new love interest, and Luke, the long time love interest. Their stories don’t overlap all that much except for their interest in the beautiful and beguiling magician named Violet. The characters all collide in the unimaginable and dramatic culmination of the story. In order to avoid spoiling the story, I cannot gush over any more details.

If you read only one book in 2015, make it Violets and Violence. I am already planning a re-read of this well-written tale.

“Love is the biggest illusion of all, and all it takes is a bit of work —the very thing you hate —to keep it alive."

“Magic happens in life’s seams, the tiny space, like this, that exists between the moments that count.”

For me, picking up a Morgan Parker book is to know that I’m going to get swept up in a unique story. One that’s well written and captivating. That’s exactly what I found with this story.

A magician named Violet, her manager and a sweet guy picked from the audience get caught up in a tangled web of illusions and manipulation. There were shocking moments, things that left me confused and others that had me anxiously turning the pages. It didn’t make sense at first how this woman could be in love with two very different men. But, as the story slowly unraveled, bits and pieces were revealed, until everything came together for a shocking conclusion. It was a magical and intense read. One I would highly recommend, especially if you are looking for something more than the typical love story.

“You’re not supposed to be the one with the secrets. That’s the making of a magician, and the kind of magic you’re really good at is the kind you find in the bedroom. And I want that magic all to myself.”

5 Believing in Magic Stars

*ARC Review for Crazy Daisy Book Whore*

"Magic happens in life's seams, the tiny space, like this, that exists between the moments that count."

Wow! Just, wow! A must-read book that I could not put down.

Violet is the mysterious, magical star of Violets and Illusions. Luke is the man behind the scenes, creator of illusions and keeper of secrets. After performing a real-life illusion years ago, Violet and Luke are evading a past that is surely going to catch up with them.

Carter, a bitterly divorced investment relationship manager, whatever the hell that is, is plucked out of the audience at Violets and Illusions. She slips him her number, but Carter hardly believes she could be interested. They "bump" into each other until Violet finally convinces it is real. Carter is jaded and skeptical, but Violet's pursuit and mystery intrigue him. The deeper he gets into Violet's world, though, the more their worlds begin to collide. Warnings, threats, and unasked questions continue to build up and create further doubt for the already skeptical Carter.

Lies and betrayals, danger and crime, illusion and magic, and twists and turns fill the pages of this story. Don't blink or you might miss something. "...people believe what they see," but in this story you've got to read closely. I didn't see it coming, but how else could it be done?

Morgan Parker has woven a twisted, beguiling tale that keeps you guessing. This is so different from his other books but just as well-written and intriguing. Dark yet enchanting, this is an adventure you'll want to experience.

Ok…I’m gonna do my best to write a review that will justify how awesome this book is.

I was completely satisfied with this book as a whole. I loved everything that this book had to offer. By the time I was done, I knew that I have been on one of the most exhilarating ride I’ve ever been on. Morgan weaves a very intricate but fantastic web filled with suspense, action, some romance, and of course magic. And the way it is all written into the story and how it plays out is just brilliant. The characters of Carter, Violet, and Luke are intense and excellent. I needed to know what happened next and what everything meant. My mind was racing as I try to figure out where this story was gonna go and let me tell, you do not. There is more to the story than what you are reading and you have to dig deep to found out all the clues and details. Is it all just an illusion or is it real?!

This book is different from Morgan’s other books but that does not make it any less wonderful. Morgan’s storytelling and writing just captivates you until the very end when you finish and wonder what did you just read and then you have to re-read it again just to revel in its beauty. It is a book that you can not put down and gets your mind working. That is a great feeling to have while reading a story and this book gives it to you in spades. V&V does not disappoint in all aspects. This is an exceptional read that will lure into its world.
Do you believe in magic and illusion? Read this story and found out. I loved this book!

Loved this story. Loved the twist, the characters and everything about it. I have to say that I did not see that coming at all, normally I am pretty good at predicting things in stories but somehow I was so into the story that I was blinded and didn't see what was coming. I really liked how the author didn't make you think for a second that it was a possibility at all, you just won't see it because you might be expecting something else, like I was. I loved the magic in the story and I have to say that even thought Luke was made into a bit of a villain I was very sad at the end when he does not get a HEA. I was happy for Carter and I truly liked his character and of course I liked Violet as well but sometimes I didn't like her very much. I have to say I was more into the males in the story than Violet.
The story has a lot of action and you won't be bored for a second. The romance was there and the sex scenes are very well written. There was quite a bit of steaminess going on in the story and you might be a bit confused sometimes because you know that there are 2 males in the story so you don't know if you like on or the other for her.
The story has a HEA of sorts, just not for every character in the story and I have to say I was a bit sad about something that happens.
Definitely recommend reading this one, it's super awesome!

I had the pleasure of an Author copy.

This is one of those books I wish I had read in paperback, I could imagine myself right there in the paperback, my finger getting ready to turn the next page, enjoy the smell of the book and the feel as I can imagine it would add to this. (I am a total Bookie)

Something a little different from Morgan, but in Morgan's wonderful storytelling style and when I first read a little passage I knew this was going to be for me as it has intrigue and illusion. More drama than I was expecting which is always a good thing and I was page turning wondering who, when, why and what was going to happen to Violet, Luke and Carter, who would get the girl? Grittier, darker, the smoke and mirrors of the magic shows came across from both on stage and their personal lives.

Can't say anymore, it is something you need to read completely spoiler free. Enjoy.

One of my criteria for rating a book at 5 stars is whether or not I would read it more than once. Rarely do I find myself wanting to to re-read one just after I’ve finished it. With “Violets and Violence” by Morgan Parker that was indeed the case. “Violets and Violence” is another fine example of how artfully plotted Morgan Parker’s stories are. You really must pay very close attention to the characters in this story and “follow the cups” so to speak.

At the center of the story is “magic” in its many forms. At the very start, we are introduced to a performance act called “Violets and Illusions” , starring a young women called Violet. The story however is revealed to us through two voices, through an investment banker named Carter Borden and through Luke Kemble, with whom Violet shares a long and unique history. These relationships, Violets involvement with both of them, is perplexing. But that’s not the only mystery in this story. It does however drive the entire storyline, and this is where you must really pay attention.

Just as Luke and Carter experience, Violet completely baffled me. She’s almost never in the same “mood” with Carter twice and as Carter is still recovering from a divorce, his growing relationship with Violet hinges on the many “omissions” of her life story. They share an instant connection, but with Violet, every feeling and what her motivates her is called into question. Carter is constantly fending off the dual personalities and the mystery that is Violet. I’ll admit that I developed some genuine concerns about Violets stability.

As for Luke, we get half of the story through his eyes, and all of the mystery that is set up in the prologue. Luke’s relationship with Violet and her act means that he has very precise expectations of her. I found I had started to develop expectations of her as well and at more or less half way into the story, I had grown rather disenchanted with her. But, very soon after I found myself feeling this way, well, the story breaks wide open. At this point I had to forget the romance aspect of the story and focus on the true villains and mystery of this story. Things are really never how they seem.

Every story that I’ve read by Morgan Parker has been completely unique. They are romance-mysteries that almost always have an element of tragedy, and most certainly a dash of humor, typically very dry. When you finish “Violets and Violence” you will have one of those “of course” moments and then you’ll want to dive back in and see if you can see the clues as they were laid out. I had so many questions while reading this story and I’m happy to report that, in the end, Mr. Parker does a wonderful job addressing each and every one. This is yet another amazing read. 5 Stars and my recommendation in the mystery/romance genre.

“Magic happens in life’s seams, the tiny space, like this, that exists between the moments that count.”

First off I have to say that I rarely reread a book, but I'm ready to reread this one already! Violet was.....something else... I loved her and at times hated her too, but she always seemed to pull me back to her side. FOR ME...This book was full of...

AND...

AND THEN...

GIFSoup

moments.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat, THE. WHOLE. TIME! I started out just reading, taking it all in and then I found myself totally engrossed in it and trying to develop some detective skills to figure it out. I had a lot of guesses what the big twist might be but I didn't pinpoint it down until it just happened. You DO have to watch very closely as to not miss a thing. But no worries on that, I'm sure that when you start reading it you will get sucked into the book as I did. The last thing I have to say is I am VERY happy with the direction Morgan is taking his stories, they're not just love stories anymore. V&V just might be my new favorite MP book.

First let me say, I received a copy of Violets & Violence from the author for an honest review.

I've read several of Morgan's books and have never been disappointed. So, when I sat down to read this book, I had an expectation of reading a good book. Probably not fair but nonetheless, it was there. And like always, Morgan delivered!!

Violet is a master at her craft. She knows just how to push the envelope and the scope of one's mind into believing the "untruths" of magic...or is it true? She's able to fool (or maybe convince) even the most keen of people that the possibility it there. "Tricks," no these are tricks. Tricks are for the corner.

Carter is a boring banker. He lives a mundane life until he's given the chance to meet Violet. The instant connection the two of them have is undeniable. Only he's not sure she feels it too.

Luke, I felt sorry for him. He loves Violet...

The twists and turns Morgan put into this book definitely kept me on my toes and kept the pages turning! There is true magic penned. One of spite, lust, love, desire, anger, and of course angst!

This is a MUST read!!

I finished this book about a week ago, but I've had some trouble trying to find the right words to be able to write this review..
You see, this book got me... As in it satisfied, the way a wonderfully written book can satisfy an avid reader. I was worried that if I rushed writing my review, I might not give this great story enough credit. This still might not be worded well enough...
(As I state in pretty much every review I write: I will not give spoilers, so I won't give away anything to those who haven't read the story yet).
This book was very different in many ways from prior Morgan Parker books. But, it also had some familiarity to it (which is a good thing). There's so much suspense, and twists, some humor, action, sexiness, anger... and it all merged together fantastically in this story.
Once I started reading, I didn't want to stop.. I needed to know what was happening next with these characters.
At the end of this book my mind kept going. This is a great book, one that gets you thinking and questioning situations.
Once again, well done, Mr. Parker.

I received an ARC e-book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

It took me a long time to finally write a review of this book as after reading it my mind was like a mashed banana. It's still a bit smooshed even now. Parker's writing is truly beautiful and his storytelling is fantastic. I was really captured within Violet's world and the twists and turns kept me glued to the page. My 4 stars is based on my enjoyment as there were times when I was just so confused I didn't know what was going on, I had to go away and think about it for a while. The thrill of the fast-paced storyline always kept me coming back though.

I have read every single one of Morgan Parker's books and I am always in awe of both his talent and ability to keep surprising with his creativity. With Violets & Violence, it's as if his writing has been taken to a whole new level. The storyline, while intricate at times, kept me incredibly fascinated. From beginning to end. I was intrigued right from the start and didn't come up for air until I finished the very last line.

While the story revolves around an illusions act, there are many other facets at play. Violet, our heroine, is seemingly involved romantically with her 'manager' Luke. Yet she also seems to be drawn to Carter, whom she brings onstage as a volunteer one night at her show. While Violet tries to juggle both her love life and her career, there are other players who want nothing more than to destroy her successful life by forcing her to repay a debt that was used to make her dreams come true.

The use of mystery and illusion to convey this storyline was utterly brilliant. I never knew what to expect next and my heart raced at the twists and turns this book delivered. I was caught up in the love that Luke had for Violet, yet was completely taken with Carter's affection for her as well. The absolutely sinister secondary characters that were hell bent on trying to break Violet and her world were written perfectly and added more to the already complicated puzzle.

Morgan Parker is able to combine some very sexy scenes, together with ones that are downright gritty, with ease. His way of writing is smart and can be both conventional and complex at the same time. He pays attention to detail and you become completely immersed into the storyline from the very start. I wanted to know the hows and whys and was happily rewarded at the conclusion.

This book has the mystery to keep you on edge. The romance and passion to keep you interested and the unique premise to keep you fully engaged.

Truly a story like no other. One that has stayed with me and forced me to reread immediately just to fully comprehend what had just transpired. In truth, I wanted to make sure I hadn't missed a thing. Every word is to be savored.

A bit of a mindf**k that made me smile happily. This book is well worth your time and deserves a huge 5 stars.

I had the pleasure of picking up a book that is somewhat a departure from what I normally read even though I like to consider myself a reader of all things fiction. This one was literally magic! You’ll see.

This was a really intriguing mystery from beginning to end because it kept me wondering what the heck was going on and frustrating me with the need to figure the puzzle out. The writer didn’t make it all that easy but then again I don’t consider myself much of a “mystery” reader. I need to read more of these types of books! When I finally made my guess as to who was who and what was what only to discover I was right in the next chapter made me feel like I had just run a victory lap.

Well written and thought out, to the point where I’ll be sure to pick up another book by this author. In fact, at the end of the book is a preview of another that is due out in early 2015 that looks equally as intriguing and I’m very much looking forward to reading it.

This book has a little of everything. Mystery, very interesting characters, plot and dialog. I particularly enjoyed the inner dialog that was often humorous although I would not label this a funny book. It’s definitely a mystery romance and a very good one at that.

Speaking of romance, there was not an overabundance of steamy scenes (the mystery taking precedence -which I personally liked) but the ones that were there sizzled.

I read cover to cover (including acknowledgements, etc.). Just when I thought I had it all figured out I’m floored by the fact that the author is a man. Not for any particular reason, but I tend to select books that are written by women and I just ASSumed this was also written by a woman. In hindsight, there was one particular chapter that should have been a big red flag that a man was behind the scenes crafting this tale but I won’t spoil that for you.

My hats off to Morgan Parker for creating a truly enjoyable read.

Note to author: I need to know how Lucky is doing?

Love is an illusion?... or maybe it's just Morgan Parker's writing that is the illusion.
Morgan Parker has this beautiful and unique writing style that constantly has you second guessing what is happening in the story. He also has this incredible ability to write a sub story (story within the story) that runs deeper than tying the main story line together.

What I look forward to most when I read a Morgan Parker novel is his take or twist on love.
Violets & Violence really showcased this. The 'obvious' love story still had me guessing as to where the author was going to take them but what I found myself totally invested in, was the 'other' love story. Luke and Vi’s love. It was intense, it was consuming, and it was an all or none type of love. It was Shakespearean love.
I cannot delve too much into this story because it would give away many aspects that are best to go in reading blind. I did enjoy some of the risks Parker took in one of the story developments that many authors are shy to delve into.
The setting of magic is a fabulous way to weave a story of deceit and pulling off one of the greatest illusions… love. But maybe it’s real.

If you enjoy a story that keeps you guessing and second-guessing, Violets & Violence is just the one.
If you enjoy a story with a real love story (not that insta love stuff), then Violets & Violence is the one.
If you enjoy a story that is well written, well developed, then Violets & Violence is the one.

V&V get 4/5 magical stars

Morgan weaves a masterpiece of love, mystery and suspense! For me this story had a very different feel from his other books I have read. Creating a story that is a little more dark, I was hooked from the very first paragraph and it left me thinking about it since I finished. I love that this story was mysterious, suspenseful, and it leaves you on the edge of your seat often wondering where these characters were going and what was going to happen next. I especially love that this novel had so much story to it; it's not just a love story...there is so much more!

Morgan has very descriptive, heartfelt prose, allowing me to feel as though I was right in the heart of Detroit where this story takes place. You could feel the unease of the characters as he described them in sketchy parts of the city. Violet and Luke have a magic show in the Detroit area. While attending one of the shows, Carter meets Violet after she plucks him out of the audience. While Carter and Violet are getting to know each other, Luke is dealing with the past that has come back to haunt them. Morgan created a story with twists and turns, crafting characters that are truly believable. I can't wait to read more from this amazing author. He has definitely moved up to one of the authors that I would buy anything they put out because he's that good.

Violets and Violence is definitely different from any other Morgan Parker book I have read. That being said I believe this one was so unique and intriguing. Morgan did a really good job writing something out of his usual writing.

I was hooked from the very beginning and found myself never wanting to put it down till the very end. The book was captivating, magical, suspenseful, and even had a little romance and love thrown into the mix. It had everything you could as for in a book.

I really loved all the characters. They each added their own personalities into the mix and made the book a whole. I adored Luke and couldn’t help but love him and want nothing but happiness for him and Violet. But I was not prepared for the ending. It not only broke half of my heart, but also mended the other half.

So if you enjoy a book that leaves you guessing the whole way through and then not really figuring it out till the end when everything is revealed, this is the book for you. I highly recommend Violets and Violence to you.

I give Violets and Violence by Morgan Parker a 4 out of 5 Magical Stars.

Morgan Parker has once again drawn me in to an incredibly well told story that leave you breathless... You won't want to put this book down from beginning to end the illusions and magic that Violet presents will keep you wondering what is next for this characters.

From Violet to Luke (her manager) right back to Carter

Who will she pick?

“I’m falling in love with this guy,” she repeated. “I’m not sacrificing that, and I don’t care if that annoys you or anyone else.

“I can’t make love magically appear. Neither can you. It’s probably the one and only thing in life that’s not an illusion.”

“That’s where you’re wrong,” I told her, backing out of the kitchen. “Love is the biggest illusion of all, and all it takes is a bit of work – the very thing you hate – to keep it alive.”

This story has twists and turns that will have you asking yourself what just happened and in the end it will leave you speechless.Morgan has a unique writing still; one that will keep you longing for his next book to see what he will bring you this time.

Oooh I just knew I was going to fall for the other team in this one and Violet did not disappoint! I adored her, her magic, her spice in life, her secrets, her mood swings, and now I know why. Morgan Parker threw all the Loopty Loo's at us in this one with the talent of a true magician.
V&V had the secrets of trade with.. slight of hand, mind bending tricks, and the flair for the dramatic.

This Author amazes me with his creative skills, his style of writing just flows so smoothly you feel like you are really there and living the moments in these characters lives, I definitely wanted to be at every one of V&V's magic shows. I once again fell for all three of the leading characters, but there is something very special about Violet... and that my book loving friends, is something you simply must read to find out why.

I See What You Did There

Violets and Violence was such an awesome read! Almost every time I thought I had it figured out, I was wrong. Except for the big twist... I saw it coming a mile away very early on in the story. Don't worry Morgan, I love figuring things out! ;) With that said, I LOVED IT!

I would totally pay to see the Violets show. I would also let Carter manage the bell out of my money if I had any.

I was annoyed with Rinker and Lindsey, as I suppose I should have been. Luke grated on my nerves as well, but he didn't turn out to be as awful as I was expecting.

Violet fascinated me from start to finish. As did Carter. And of course Edie. <3

Morgan Parker has earned five stars for plenty of intrigue, suspense, love, and of course... MAGIC!

Morgan Parker is like a fine wine (or scotch) he just gets better with time.

I have absolutely loved all of Morgan’s books and this is no different. I was captivated and at the edge of my seat throughout the entire book. I love the way Morgan always keeps you guessing at what is going to happen and I love that no matter what I think is going to happen it is always something different.

If you are looking for a great book that is well written, full of passion and excitement then this book is for you.

I can’t wait to see what Morgan comes out with next.

Are you watching closely?

I definitely think this quote from the movie, Now You See You, is completely relevant and you’ll see why :)

First off, the cover!!! I heart it! Yes, I love a good cover ;) But look at it! It’s gorgeous! When I first started reading, I didn’t realise that there would be magic in involved! I should have known however, it didn’t click right away but I was so stoked! I love magic! So already Mr. Parker had me sold on his book. I became fixated by the story and was like this:

description

I was completely spellbound . . . (see what I did there ;) lol) but it is true! I was afraid to take my eyes off the page in case I missed even the smallest detail! I loved the sketches at the beginning of the chapters that depicted Carter and Luke, the two main men in the story. Absolutely beautiful! And they are totally handsome ;)

So as I mentioned, there are two leading men. One is a recent divorcee and the other, a mastermind in illusion. And in the middle of them is a woman. Violet. It seems that she has taken an interest in Carter despite Luke being her partner. To be honest, I did not take an immediate liking to Violet. I felt that she was using Carter and betraying Luke. I was clearly on the male side of things rather than Violet. But that doesn’t mean she was a bad person. I just couldn’t figure out her angle and I REALLLY wanted to know what she was doing! :) I think Luke described her perfectly when he called her a “spoiled bitch” :P My feelings exactly! But I absolutely loved her when she said this:

“Seriously, Carter. If you like me, don’t be shy. Because girls don’t chase boys. Ever. Especially not the magical girls, because those girls can have boys dropping out the sky.”

*snaps fingers* you tell him sister! ;)

I kept tossing up between Luke and Carter and couldn’t decide which I loved more. Each man had something special. But my heart ached for both men because it felt like Violet was only giving them pieces of herself. And Carter had so many questions! Her hot and cold mood swings, and the secrets she kept. So much he didn’t understand! And there was always this danger, lurking, just bubbling under the surface…

But fret not, there are some hot scenes too! The hotness under the stage! *fans self* that was a brilliant scene! There are some gorgeous quotes in the story too. Here are two of my favourites:

“When the last thing you see at night is your soul mate’s smile and the first thing you find when you wake up is his eyes, you’d sacrifice anything.”

“I can’t make love magically appear. Neither can you. It’s probably the one and only thing in life that’s not an illusion.”

And then the truth was finally revealed. I went through these:

I should have picked up on the subtle clues! But I didn’t until all the pieces fell into place and everything made sense! I was completely surprised which just proves what a great job Mr. Parker did in revealing only small pieces until the big reveal. And yes, I’m withholding the reveal ;)

Mr. Parker has done a fantastic job with this story. Suspense, drama, action, mystery, romance and, of course, steamy scenes ;) If by chance, Mr. Parker happens to read this review, he might enjoy this quote and where it comes from: “The secret impresses no one. The trick you use it for is everything.” I won’t say where it’s from because I don’t want to reveal too much but I’m sure Mr. Parker has seen this film ;) This story is truly beautiful, enchanting and, dare I say it, magical. I recommend you to read it if you haven’t already. Mr. Parker really does make us believe in magic!

Secrets. We all have them. Some are little, benign little things that stay hidden from a sense of embarrassment or lack of interest. But some are sharp around the edges; potentially lethal in their consequences and ramifications. Some stay buried out of desperation. A lingering panic that arises whether bidden or not with the thought that they may one day come to light. Those secrets are the ones that are truly dangerous and luckily they make for the very best stories.

Violet is a magician, or more to the point, an illusionist. She can disappear at will. She can walk through plate glass. She can meet an outwardly unremarkable man and show him what magic really means just with her smile. She is vivacious, gorgeous and much of the time, larger than life.

Carter is an outwardly unremarkable man. He has a high pressure, but relatively boring office job working numbers within the stock market to make his clients as much money as he can possibly wring from the highly fallible and unpredictable system. He’s also dead honest, slightly broken, impossibly smart and utterly charming. And from the moment he lays eyes on Violet, he is ridiculously smitten.

Luke is steel wrapped in charisma. He is ruthless, wickedly smart, manipulative and always striving to rise just a bit further off the ground. He is the eye of the storm, the keeper of the passwords and the vault where all of Violet’s sharpest secrets live. His inner monologue is so much fun to read because of how smart he is and how he not only uses wit to highlight his intelligence, but keeps it caged and takes it out to play only when it really matters.

The characters in this book are impossibly complicated, even when it looks like they’re finally letting down their guards and giving you answers. There’s always one more corner to turn before you finally get the full landscape laid out before you.

Morgan Parker has used the razor’s edge inherent in his characters and used it to finely hone his writing in this book. His writing is always simultaneously laced with humor, heat and hope, but he’s filed those down to their finest points and then threads a threat through the entire book that is entirely new to his writing. And it is drop dead gorgeous to read. By the time I reached the end of this book, I was so tightly strung I thought for sure I would snap. And then I did. It took me two days to be able to write this review because of how completely I snapped. It’s a break I will willingly sign up for every single time, especially as crafted by Parker.

This book is absolutely riveting. Thoroughly infused with a sense of magic so menacing that you don’t know if you want the grand finale after all, but you keep reading because you just have to see how it all comes together. And the payoff is huge and supremely fitting to the setup.

Morgan Parker just keeps getting better. If you’ve not yet picked up one of his books, let me say (again) that this is a perfect book to start with. It’s the consummate magic trick – beautiful, endearing, dangerous and in the end, you look back at the whole thing and smile slowly as it all sinks in exactly how grand of a trick you were just fortunate enough to witness.

The book opens with Violet in a room with a lawyer. She's accused of stealing papers from a safety deposit box. In an effort to get them back the bank is willing to give her $200,000 and the papers can be returned anonymously. She takes the money and begins her magical life.

The story follows three main characters. First is Edie who is now called Violet. She's a gorgeous woman who performs illusions in a magic show. Her illusions are so good that she keeps on moving to bigger and better venues. She's smart, she's pretty, and she knows what she wants.

Carter works at an investment firm. His ex-wife left him for a much older, and richer, man. He still goes by her house to see what she is up to. His life is going nowhere fast until he finds himself at Violet's show. He gets called up on stage and he's instantly smitten. She gives him her number but he never calls.

A week later they have a chance meeting. The two have dinner and there is definite chemistry between them. Soon Carter can't stand his days without her but it's like there are two Violet's. One is fun loving, happy, and loves to be with him. The other is distant, tolerates him, and often drops off the grid for days at a time. Can Carter find out who Violet really is and make her his girl?

Then there is Luke. Luke is Violet's manager and live in boyfriend. He takes care of raising funds for her show, booking gigs, and taking care of her. He loves Violet and everything that comes with her...except for the distant days. Most days Violet is the woman he loves and cares about but there are days when she stays out all night and keeps her distance.

When Luke flies back to New York he finds a surprise waiting for him. An old colleague is there and he wants back the money Violet took from him. The man locks Luke up in hopes Violet will come to save him and he will finally get his money back.

The story revolves mostly around Violet, her show, and her love. But is she really the person both Carter and Luke need her to be? Or is she really more of an illusion like the ones she creates on stage?

This is a great book for anyone who believes in the world of magic and likes a love story on the side.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

First, this cover caught my attention. Then the blurb drew me in. It was an engaging read, for sure.

Carter is chosen to check out the props at a stage show. Violet banters with him as he checks out the huge glass wall...that she then walks right through. He feels a connection to the woman in the cat suit and she gives him her number before he leaves. Carter has some hang ups, though. He's not quite over his ex-wife, the woman who just walked right of of his life. This new woman has pretty much overwhelmed him with how intrigued he is about her. But he's scared because Violet is drama and danger and lust and just maybe something else.

The chapters switch between Carter and Luke. Luke is the manager and brains behind the illusion show. He makes the magic happen. He also lives with Violet. AND he gets kidnapped! I didn't like him very much. Carter was much more appealing to me.

There's mystery here and one is constantly going: What the heck?

Thankfully the story threads are all brought together and the things we questioned are all smoothed out. While I did appreciate that very much (and I hope you do, too) I was taken aback by the editing. There should be at least a double space when we change scenes. The characters would be in the theater...and then sitting in a car. I almost got whiplash. There were also formatting issues. Several times there would be a break in a sentence...and the rest of sentence was nowhere to be found. Pretty much stopped me in my reading tracks several times.

Besides those issues, the story was one that kept me reading. I will certainly look for more from this author.

This is one of those slow burn kind of books. The kind that keeps you constantly guessing and wondering just what the hell is going on. While I've read plenty of books in the Mystery genre before, I had never read a book quite like Violets and Violence.

It tells the story of Violent, a young magician in Detroit. What makes this book so original though is that her story isn't told through her eyes but rather through the two men in her life. One there by chance, and one there from the start.

I don't want to delve too much into the plot because I truly feel that to even give the smallest of it away will take away from this great book that Parker has written. His writing takes you to the point of almost madness (because you can't for the life of you figure out what is going on) before he kicks you head first into the tangled web that these characters have woven.

So why only four stars then? The beginning is slow. Really slow. There were points where I found myself questioning whether or not I could continue on. But once I got just over halfway through I had to know one, what the hell was going on and two, where it would all end up. But more importantly, I wanted to know. These characters had grown on me and it would have been a disservice to them not to follow their story through.

This isn't my first Morgan Parker book, and I can say without hesitation he is one of best writers I've had the privilege of reading lately. He has an uncanny knack for telling beautiful, original stories that I can guarantee you have never read before. If you love a good mystery, with a little love thrown in, then I definitely suggest Violets and Violence as your next read.

I cannot truly review this one without giving away important (In My Opinion) spoilers. So let’s cover the very basics.

Violet is an amazing magician. She is magical on the stage. One night during a show an audience member joins her on the stage. The rest, as they say is history – or the story. The story is told through the viewpoints of the two men in Violet’s life. Luke, not only her manager, but her love, her only love for a long time. Carter, still reeling from a divorce, he is broken but stating to mend as Violet’s love rushes through his life. Was illusion only for the stage or did it flow over into Violet’s personal life as well?

Reading Violets & Violence was like peeling an onion, layer after layer until you finally reach the core. I honestly cannot say more or I will give away key parts of their story.

If you love mysteries and thrillers – you won’t be disappointed. If you love romance – there is plenty of steamy loving going on. If you love trying to figure out a magician’s secrets – I dare you to figure out the finish.

It’s a 4 outta 5 rating for me. I really enjoyed this one. It was a slow, detailed builder of a story. Even now, I’m still not sure I know all of Violet’s magic tricks. Read it for yourself – I think you’ll find a wonderful love story at the middle of a mystery.

*I received an e-ARC of Violets & Violence from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*

A Magical Mystery

I was given this novel as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Since reading the ARC, I have purchased the e-book & also the paperback – YES, it is that good.

“Magic happens in life's seams, the tiny space, like this, that exists between the moments that count.”

It is no secret that I am a Morgan Parker fan. He has once again written my favorite type of story – a mystery with romance.

The story centers on the main characters Violet, Carter & Luke. Were their lives an illusion just as Violet's performances were. Magic; it is there in many forms…..

Morgan kept my attention with his magical weaving of this story. I continuously tried analyzing the how & why’s of where the story was going. I became a fan of Carter & wanted to rip the hair out of Violet’s head. I could not figure out Luke. (I still can’t.) I don't feel that I can give you a synopsis of the story line without giving you a spoiler. The story is so interwoven. Morgan’s writing style pushed me to finish the story to the end. The end came too quick. Why? I wanted more. That is what reading a novel by Morgan Parked does to me.
I encourage you to read this novel. Is Violet, Carter & Luke's life & love an illusion?

Music is thought to be illusions, conjuring, smoke and mirrors. But in Violet's staged performances none of this seems to apply. She can dazzle with sex appeal; but she can also walk through sold objects and move from place to place in the blink of an eye! Impossible, but she performs these feats routinely. She's a rising star, aling with her troupe and partner, Luke. He's her friend, partner and lover; they've been together for years and are still going strong. Or are they?
One evening, Carter attends a show. He's blown away by the performance and Violet. He was nearly destroyed when his wife suddenly left him and the resulting divorce. He finds himself unable to resist Violet. She's breath of fresh air and honest (even with her secrets). Honestly isn't a word usually associated with Violet. Carter is warned by friends and associates to stay away from Violet. But, the heart has a mind all its own. How Will this end?
Magic, mystery, romance, deception and criminal activity all contribute to this books fine reading! My only exception was the quick change in scenes, at times. Thought it a good read and gice this book 3 1/2 stars.

I received this book free through Netgalley for an honest review.
