Martin and Albie are jetting off for some sun and sangria. But they didn’t bank on finding a body on the beach…

Fresh from their last case at Twilight Lodge, Martin and Albie reward themselves with a relaxing trip to the sun-soaked island of Menorca.

But when they head down to breakfast one morning, they happen upon a panicked husband reporting his wife, bestselling author Karen Squires, missing. Soon afterwards they’re shocked to discover Karen’s body on the beach.

Local police call it a tragic one look at the broken safety fence on the cliffs above suggests Karen fell. But the victim’s perfectly-manicured nails tells Martin that this was no accident. She was pushed.

Back at the hotel, the duo discover that Karen was running a retreat for writers, all of whom seem shocked by her untimely passing. But which one of them may have had a motive for murder? Was a fellow writer jealous of her success? Did her devoted husband feel sidelined?

As they hunt for clues, they realise that the answer may be found in one of Karen’s bestsellers and luckily for them, Albie’s girlfriend, Barbara, is her number one fan. A killer is hiding in plain sight. But to get to them, can they separate the fact from the fiction before it’s too late?

Matt was born in Margate, but eventually escaped to Spain to write his first novel (in between working as a newspaper columnist, and playing a lot of tennis). Previously he has been a professional lifeguard, fitness equipment salesman, and an IT head hunter, but he prefers writing for a living, so hopes people will keep buying his books.

Matt is the author of four contemporary romantic comedy novels; Best Man, The Ex-Boyfriend's Handbook (which was shortlisted for both the Romantic Novel Of The Year award, as well as the Melissa Nathan Award for Comedy Romance), From Here To Paternity, and Ex-Girlfriends United. He's also written about life, love, and relationships for various publications including The Times, Guardian, Cosmopolitan, Company, Elle, Glamour, and The Sun.

Several of Matt's novels have been translated for various European markets (he's big in the Balkans, apparently), as well as as far afield as Malaysia and Indonesia. He's a regular on the literary festival scene, and rates the recent lecturing stint he did on the Creative Writing degree course at London Metropolitan University as one of the most rewarding things he's ever done - and not only because of the number of ideas he was able to appropriate from his students for his books.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance readers copy of The Armchair Detectives On Holiday by Matt Dunn.

It’s always fun to return to a series where you’ve gotten to know and love the recurring characters. Such is the case for The Armchair Detectives On Holiday. It’s the second book in this cozy mystery series, which features two 80-something amateur detectives. Or are they amateurs? Martin insists he used to be a spy. Albie, who needs to use a mobility scooter, isn’t convinced. (It’s not necessary to have read the first book in the series to enjoy this one.)

Martin and Albie are “on holiday” as the British put it, in Menorca, with Martin’s daughter, Dionne, a policewoman, and Dionne’s dog, Custard. Martin and Albie wanted to get away from the hubbub surrounding their first successful investigation; hence the trip to Menorca. There’s a group of writers on a writing retreat at their hotel and when one of them is found dead at the bottom of a nearby cliff, Martin thinks it’s murder and not an accident, so he talks Albie into investigating with him.

In addition to the murder itself, there’s some good insight into the world of publishing, which is always fun for an avid reader to read about. And as someone not all that much younger than Martin and Albie, I found their antics around technology pretty funny.

The Armchair Detectives on Holiday is a cozy mystery that follows Martin and Albie, two retired former spies enjoying a holiday together. When a suspicious accident occurs, Martin can't help but wonder if it was actually murder. Determined to uncover the truth, he sets out to identify the suspects and find the killer, dragging Albie along despite his preference to stay in full vacation mode.

This was such a charming read. I loved the cozy, lighthearted, and humorous atmosphere throughout the story. The mystery was engaging and kept me guessing, while still delivering the comfort and warmth that make cozy mysteries so enjoyable. It was the perfect balance between a compelling investigation and a fun, feel-good adventure!

"A laugh-out-loud summer whodunit where two septuagenarian ex-spies trade retirement home tea for Mediterranean murder."

In THE ARMCHAIR DETECTIVES ON HOLIDAY, bestselling author Matt Dunn returns with #2 in The Armchair Detective Mysteries. The story hinges on a pair of octogenarian former intelligence operatives facing immense physical and technological hurdles to solve a suspicious clifftop death. Retired secret agents vs. a jealous writers' retreat killer.

Elevator Pitch
Fresh off their first investigation, two octogenarian ex-spies jet off to the sun-soaked island of Menorca for a relaxing getaway, only to find themselves trading sangria for sleuthing when a bestselling author is found dead at the bottom of a cliff.

Setting
The story is set in the present day on the scenic Mediterranean island of Menorca, Spain. The narrative primarily unfolds within a beautiful resort hotel hosting an exclusive writers' retreat, defined by its steep coastal cliffs, sun-bleached beaches, and hidden balcony views.

Vibe
Lighthearted, witty, and deeply nostalgic. It perfectly blends the charming, laugh-out-loud humor of a classic British cozy mystery with the sharp, underlying tradecraft of an old-school spy thriller.

Genre: Cozy Mystery / Comedic Crime Fiction / Amateur Sleuth.

Themes
~Aging and Relevance:
~The Analog-Digital Divide
~Jealousy and Ambition
~Unbreakable Alliances:

MARTIN & ALBIE: THE RE-ACTIVATED DUO
Turning retirement-age physical limitations and old tradecraft into an investigative superpower.

Standout Characters
~Martin: The eighty-something widower protagonist; a sharp-eyed ex-government agent whose lack of modern tech savvy is balanced by his master observation skills.
~Albie: Martin's wheelchair-bound former nemesis and intelligence partner, matching Martin's wit with stubborn grit.

Author Writing Standout
Dunn's background in sharp, character-driven comedy, romance, and contemporary fiction shines through in his meticulous, highly empathetic rendering of Martin's first-person perspective. He completely avoids reducing the octogenarians to cardboard caricatures, writing their everyday physical logistics, witty banter, and genuine grief over lost time with striking, tactile realism.

Takeaway
True investigative genius doesn't rely on algorithms or modern gadgetry; the most deceptive puzzles are cracked by an observational eye that knows how to look past surface assumptions.

Title Significance
The Armchair Detectives on Holiday acts as a playful, subverted nod to the duo's new reputation. It highlights that even when these senior citizens actively attempt to leave their investigative work behind for a vacation, crime has a funny way of following them wherever they go.

Metaphor
The broken clifftop safety fence serves as the central metaphor of the novel. It represents the deceptive boundary between a tragic, accidental slip and a calculated, intentional murder—mirroring the hidden cracks in the writers' retreat profiles that the duo must push through to catch a killer.

Why You Should Read
Read this if you are a fan of heart-filled, laugh-out-loud cozy mysteries like The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, or if you want a fast-paced, multi-generational whodunit with an incredibly sharp, endearing senior cast and a beautifully rendered vacation backdrop.

My Thoughts
A hilarious, sun-soaked British cozy mystery. The novel succeeds beautifully in building lighthearted tension. The Menorca holiday setting is perfectly captured—not just in its aesthetics, but in the heavy comedic friction of Martin adjusting to modern travel and technology. Both Martin and Albie are highly memorable leads; their old-school banter and sheer stubbornness make their bond incredibly grounded.

Verdict: 4 / 5 Stars
"A charming, completely addictive British cozy mystery that pairs senior spy tradecraft with a laugh-out-loud holiday whodunit."

Recs
~The Armchair Detectives by Matt Dunn (for the duo's signature, five-star retirement home debut)
~The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman (for another exceptional, high-wit mystery focusing on senior citizens out-thinking a killer)
~The Spy Coast, The Summer Guests, The Shadow Friends The Martini Club Series by Tess Gerritsen.

One Liner: An entertaining mystery

Still high after solving the first case at Twilight Lodge, Martin and Albie go on a trip to the sun-soaked island of Menorca. However, their plans to relax have to be postponed when the husband of a bestselling author, Karen Squires, reports she is missing, only for her body to be found a while later.

The local police think it is a tragic accident, a fall from the cliffs, but Martin is sure it was no accident. Karen has been organizing a writing retreat, so all the attendees seem shocked at the events. However, one of them or the husband could be the killer!

The story comes in Martin’s first-person POV.

My Thoughts

The book should work as a standalone. While there are a few references to the previous setting and a side character, the mystery is independent. We do get some extra backstory about the main characters, but there’s enough here to know the outline.

The MC is his usual self—ready to solve mysteries (even if he is not sure it actually is a mystery), reminiscing about his past career (which we still don’t know is true), and being nosy.

There’s no dearth of suspects in this one. Almost everyone has a motive. The mystery is pretty cool. I like that it also deals with a few issues from the publishing industry, the lives of writers, and, most importantly, raises some valid questions about ethics. As writers, we cannot help but take inspiration from real life. However, some of us also learn where to draw the line.

The pacing felt slower than book one, though I’m not sure why. The chapters do move steadily, so it is not actually slow; just fast-paced.

Though the book is set on the beautiful island of Menorca, I didn’t actually feel the vibe. We visit a few places and all, but the focus is more on the mystery and the suspects. Moreover, the MCs are in their 80s (and one of them uses a mobility scooter), so it kinda makes sense that they won’t be hiking all over the place (they still go around, so it’s not like we are stuck in a hotel).

The ending is quite satisfying, and I am rather curious to see how the potential romantic subplot would progress. I can bet the MC is even more curious, lol!

To summarize, The Armchair Detectives on Holiday is a lighthearted cozy mystery with octogenarians solving the case while offering a few questions to think about.

Gratitude to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC.

“The Armchair Detectives on Holiday” was another case of me jumping into the second book of a series without reading the first and another first encounter with a new author. The premise immediately caught my attention. It promised a blend of Richard Osman and Only Murders in the Building: amateur sleuths, humor, mystery, and a colorful cast of characters. The book delivers on that promise initially. The setup is fun, the location is appealing, and the story gets off to a lively start.

Unfortunately, somewhere around the halfway mark it begins to lose momentum. Regardless of whether the central incident is a murder or an accident, everyone seems remarkably relaxed about it. The title says "on holiday," and that appears to become the guiding principle for the entire cast. Investigating a death feels less like an urgent necessity and more like one of the optional activities offered by the hotel alongside yoga classes and afternoon cocktails.

The bigger issue, however, is the lack of ideas that drive the story forward. The characters are given intriguing backgrounds (including former intelligence connections) but very little is done with them. We are told they have unusual skills and experiences, yet we don’t see evidence of them in practice. As a result, they come across more as enthusiastic amateurs than people whose pasts genuinely inform their actions.

The humor works reasonably well at first but gradually runs out of steam. Some jokes feel stretched beyond their natural lifespan, and a few rely on premises that are difficult to accept; such as characters seemingly unaware that PIN numbers have existed for decades. The plot remains serviceable throughout, but by the final chapters I found myself less eager to discover the solution than relieved to have reached it. This is not a terrible book by any means. It is light, easy to read, and may serve as an undemanding holiday companion. But in a genre currently populated by the likes of Richard Osman and others, there are simply stronger choices available.

A very generous three stars.

One of my favourite book series is The Thursday Murder Club, so I jumped at the chance to read this ARC. The two main characters, Albie and Martin, are also in their 80s, but they have the added benefit of previously being spies for the British government before retirement. Because of that, they have quite a few skills at their disposal, which made this book super fun.

Watching how Albie and Martin interacted with the many different suspects to get information out of them was really enjoyable, and I found their methods quite clever. The mystery itself was also laid out really well, and I genuinely had no idea who the killer was throughout most of the book. That said, because there were so many suspects, the reveal didn’t come as a huge shock, even though I didn’t guess correctly, which made the ending feel a little underwhelming.

I also thought the pacing struck a really good balance. It wasn’t instant action all the time, but I never felt like any part dragged. There was consistently new information and fresh realizations coming to light, which kept the story moving forward. Also, for anyone who’s like me and enjoys short chapters, this book definitely delivers. None of the chapters were very long, and I flew through them.

Another thing I really enjoyed was the relationship between Martin and Albie. They were partners while working, and it really shows that they’ve been longtime friends. I loved their banter and especially enjoyed when they’d play good cop, bad cop with suspects.

Overall, this was a really enjoyable mystery, and I’ll definitely be looking out for the next book in the series. Also, for anyone who maybe hasn't read the first book in the series, this book can absolutely be read as a standalone. It does reference the first book, but it's not needed to understand or follow the events in this one. It also doesn't reveal the ending to the first book, so don't be afraid to dive right into this one!

Really enjoyed this cozy mystery with the perfect summery setting (Menorca, Spain) for beach/pool reading. Martin and Albie (octogenarians with former spy lives who keep stumbling into new cases) are a fun duo with just the right amount of grump mixed into their adventures. I really liked the side characters like Albie’s girlfriend Barbara who kept zooming into the vacay to act as their sounding board, chief puzzler and social media sleuth. We also had a really great crew of suspects in the murder du jour - an accomplished author has died on the first day of her annual writing retreat with her husband and a gaggle of other writers left in Spain as the top leads. The complicated dance between friend and foe amongst the group really keeps you guessing on who actually committed the crime. A writers group also meant we were tackling a few very current issues cropping up in the publishing industry, which I thought was really interesting!

To that point though, while I understand these are older gents, I will say I was a tad pulled out a couple of times at the TOTAL lack of phone/tech knowledge on Martin’s part, especially when there was a specific tech thing relative to the plot that he seemed to have no trouble understanding at all in comparison. And I couldn’t get a clear grasp on how old his daughter was supposed to be the way they referred to “her generation” but then said things that made her seem more millennial than seems possible for her age.

I have not read the first book in the series, but while there is definitely connective tissue to the first book with side characters and mentions of the prior case from that book, I do not think its *necessary* to the experience, which is honestly exactly what I want in a light mystery series. Overall this is a relatively quick, fun read!

After finding and catching a serial killer at the Twilight Lodge, Martin (an 84-yr-old ex-spy), his daughter Dionne (a current police officer), and his friend Albie (also an octogenarian ex-spy) are on vacation on the island of Menorca, Spain.

Unfortunately for them, their vacation turns into a new case when they stumble into the disappearance of a bestselling author Karen Squires. She and several of her writer friends (and frenemies) were on a writing retreat at the same spot as our Armchair Detectives.

When Karen is later found at the bottom of a cliff, dead, Martin and Albie are shocked to find that the local police are calling it an accident. Martin knows too well from his past escapades that this is foul play. The two of them decide they will figure out what happened so that justice can be served before they return home at week’s end.

It is always so fun to come back together with characters from a cozy mystery; especially ones with such heart warming characters. I love Martin and Albie’s dynamic and having Dionne more involved was a delight.

When I read the previous instalment last year, I listened to the audiobook and so even though I read an e-ARC this time on my kobo, I had Martin and Albie’s voices playing in my mind’s ear. John Hopkins, I hope you narrate this sequel because you are a phenomenal voice actor.

The mystery in this one was fun, especially because solving a murder when no one else is convinced one occurred is quite difficult! Plus, when everyone else who knows the victim on this small island are other writers (or people close to writers), the suspects seem to be good at spinning stories to get themselves out of the hot seat.

In the first book Matt Dunn’s British cozy mystery series, Martin and Albie form an uneasy alliance. Martin is thrilled, while Albie is reluctant to admit their past collaboration. The story begins with unexplained deaths in the nursing home where both octogenarians reside, and Martin senses something amiss. With the occasional assistance of Martin’s daughter, Dionne, a police constable, they unravel the mystery.

In the second book, Martin, Albie, and Dionne embark on a holiday. One morning, while at the hotel clerk’s desk, Martin overhears a man’s desperate plea about his missing wife, Karen. With Martin’s hidden past in the “company” and his success in solving the nursing home murders, he decides to help the distraught husband. They set off to find Karen, an author on a “plot walk” - a brainstorming technique. However, she has been missing for far too long.

Tragically, they discover Karen’s body over a cliff edge, revealing that her death was not an accident but a murder. Karen and several authors were attending a writing retreat, and Martin suspects one of the other authors is responsible.

This cozy mystery series is a delightful read so far! Martin is a charming character, while Albie embodies the grumpy old man stereotype. Dionne, on the other hand, is determined to keep them both in check. I thoroughly enjoy the camaraderie between Martin and Albie, as well as their bond with Dionne. The mystery in this novel is well-crafted, with a few plot twists that keep the reader guessing. This second book is a fantastic addition to Dunn’s series, seamlessly blending mystery and humor. I eagerly anticipate the next installment in the series.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

I mostly stick to female authors, so I’ll admit I hesitated before picking this one up—but wow, what a delightful surprise! The Armchair Detectives on Holiday by Matt Dunn is the second book in what I really hope turns into a long-running series. Even though I hadn’t read the first one yet (that’s next on my list!), I never felt lost at all. It works perfectly as a standalone.

Martin and Albie, two octogenarian retired spies, are an absolute dream duo. Albie’s always hunting down the next meal and zipping around on his motorized scooter, while Martin is like a determined old hound dog once he catches the scent of the truth. They play off each other so naturally and had me laughing out loud.

The story follows them to sunny Menorca for a relaxing break after their last case. That peace lasts about five minutes—until they stumble upon the body of bestselling author Karen Squires on the beach. The local police call it an accident, but Martin notices those perfectly manicured nails and knows she was pushed. What follows is a clever investigation among the suspicious writers at Karen’s retreat, with plenty of motives, red herrings, and twists that kept me guessing right until the end. I loved how the solution ties back to one of her own books—such a fun touch!

If you enjoy cozy mysteries with sharp, witty characters and a gorgeous setting, definitely add The Armchair Detectives on Holiday to your TBR. I’m officially hooked and can’t wait for the next one.

The Armchair Detectives on Holiday follows Martin and Albie, our beloved spies-in-retirement and Martin's daughter, as they start their holiday on Menorca. But an "accident" occurs - a bestselling author falls off a cliff. The police claims this was an accident, but as the duo digs deeper, they discover that all is not as it seems, especially with her writer colleagues she's on a retreat with.

Throughout the book, I got the feeling as if I was there with Albie and Martin, trying to find clues and evidence, pointing to directions. And as the book went, the investigation twists and turns and I couldn't stop reading until I found out who it was, and it was quite unexpected.
The duo has such an amazing friendships - sort of rivals from the past, now retired in the same retirement home, always busy with puzzles and mysteries. Their banter was immaculate and I found myself laughing out-loud at their perfect humor. Their friendship is a perfect model of a healthy one, and i absolutely loved how they fit together so well.
The setting of this book was atmospheric, romantic and warm, perfect for a bingeable read on the beach. Menorca is a small island, and i think the author wrote the community and setting perfectly. It felt as if we were there with them.

Overall, this book deserves the spotlight. Cozy, funny and murderous... You just can't put it down!

Martin is in his mid-80s and a widower, who recently had hip surgery and had checked into Twilight Lodge, a seaside care home to recuperate. There he ran into his old partner, wheelchair-bound Albie, who was also at the home. They both had worked for “The Company” (something very spy-like). Martin takes Albie, Dionne, his daughter, and Custard, his late wife's dog, on vacation to Menorca for a week.

One morning, Martin and Albie meet David, who is in a panic because he can't find his wife, Karen, a famous author. They are at a writers' resort at the same hotel Martin where is staying. Martin and Albie offer to help look for her and find her at the bottom of a cliff. The local police assume she fell but something doesn't look right to Martin and Albie and they start investigating.

This was a fun story. It was interesting to have it written from the first person perspective of a mid-80s man as he doesn't have a clue about today's technology (for example, he doesn't own a cell phone and confuses "Zumba" with "Zooming"). It's a cozy mystery so there is no swearing or violence. The interactions between Martin and Albie were cute. There are lots of red herrings and I was okay with the whodunnit (I had figured it out). It's the second in the Armchair Detectives series (I'd read the first one last year) and I look forward to reading more in the future.

Fresh from their last case at Twilight Lodge, Martin and Albie reward themselves with a relaxing trip to the sun-soaked island of Menorca along with Martin’s daughter Dionne & Custard the dog. But when they head down to breakfast one morning, they happen upon a panicked husband reporting his wife, bestselling author Karen Squires, missing. Soon afterwards they’re shocked to discover Karen’s body on the beach. Local police call it a tragic & one look at the broken safety fence on the cliffs above suggests Karen fell. As they hunt for clues, they realise that the answer may be found in one of Karen’s bestsellers and luckily for them, Albie’s girlfriend, Barbara, is her number one fan.
This is the second outing for Martin, Albie, Dionne & of course, Custard, it’s easily read on its own but Martin & Albie are wonderful characters so I’d recommend reading in order. I just love Martin & Albie octogenarians who have known each other for half a century as they worked together. I love the dynamics of their friendship, their banter had me laughing out loud & their interrogation methods are original. The mystery was intriguing & I didn’t work out who the villain was. I thoroughly enjoyed it & look forward to more in the series

This is the second and I hope not last entry into a series about two elderly sleuths who live in Twilight Lodge (what a fun name for an old age home) but who go on a vacation on Menorca (which I just learned is an actual island off the coast of Spain) which turns out to be a busman's holiday.

Martin and his mobility impaired sidekick are at it again. There is a murder, of course. There is a writer's retreat in their hotel and one of the attendees, Karen Squires, falls off a mountain onto a beach. The police are not terribly interested because it appears to be an unfortunate accident. Our elderly sleuths think otherwise since her fingernails are pristine, suggesting that she did not try to break her fall and that this was murder. Since it turns out that she was not well liked by the other attendees of this retreat and she and her husband's marriage was not as happy as it looked, there is no shortage of suspect. Dunn takes us in many different directions and I was not able to predict who did it before I got to the end.

Dunn was clearly having fun, with the characters, the plot and with the names. Karen is always a funny name these days! As a result, the reader has fun. The first novel in the series was good but this was even better. I hope there is a third.

While I think there is a lot to be said for reading the first in the series, I do not think readers will get lost if they don't.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with advance access to this engaging mystery novel. All of the opinions herein are entirely my own.

Having recently solved a murder case at their care home, friends Martin and Albie have taken themselves, Martin's daughter Dionne, and dog Custard, to Menorca for a week in the sun. Unfortunately, having discovered a dead body at the bottom of cliff on the first day of their break, for Martin at least, a quiet holiday is no longer on the cards! With the victim part of a writer's retreat, at the same hotel, and the local police chief convinced the death is an accident, ex-secret agent Martin, and his erstwhile partner Albie, are soon looking for who could possibly be responsible. Putting all the clues together and confronting a desperate killer was all in a day's work way back when. How different can it be now?

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Bookouture, but the opinions expressed are my own. The second in a new series I would recommend reading book one first as it explains Martin's situation in detail. Convinced he was once an operative with the Company, with Albie as his partner,  Martin has no qualms about them investigating a second murder case even if they are both now octogenarians, one with a new hip and the other in a wheelchair! This is a fun read with really likeable main protagonists and a very good mystery to solve. I enjoyed it very much.

In the first book of this series, Martin and Albie went all out to catch a killer. They did it in such a way that had me laughing out loud, and I can’t help but give them a special place in my heart.

An extra fun detail was that this comedic duo wasn’t going to stop at just one adventure, but first they were ready for a week of well-deserved rest.

So we find them on a sunny Spanish island in book two, joined by Martin’s daughter — and of course, sniffer dog Custard is along for the ride. Time to relax and enjoy…

But it doesn’t take long before the two men put their detective hats back on and, in their own typical way, start piecing together a puzzle to solve the mystery.

Once again, there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments thanks to the comical situations they find themselves in and the clever wordplay throughout.

Combined with a story full of twists and revealed secrets, this makes for a very enjoyable cozy mystery.

It had been quite a while since I last read a book in this genre, even though these kinds of stories are actually great fun. This series reminded me that humor and mystery can definitely go hand in hand.

For me personally, this book was just a little less funny than the first one, which is why I’m giving it 4.5 stars.

Thank you.

“The Armchair Detectives” was one of my great joys in 2025. I was so excited when I saw Matt Dunn was releasing the second novel in the series. But with as good as the first book was, the question remains, can Mr. Dunn continue the momentum. The answer? Absolutely. But…

Let me just say that for the most part, the first half of the book just felt like any other cozy mystery. It was enjoyable, had several chuckle-worthy moments, but nothing really stood out to make it any better from all of the other cozies out there.

The second half of the book is where this novel really shines. Martin and Albie are at their best as things really ramp up. There were several laugh out loud moments (Albie on the cobblestone street, the gathering to name the killer that goes sideways, etc.) and as with the first book, the mystery is really good.

“The Armchair Detectives on Holiday” is a really good book. Not as good as the first novel in the series, but a worthy entry in this series. And once again, I can’t wait till Martin and Albie have another adventure.

This book features Martin and Albie, the Armchair Detective, but this time they have left their retirement home behind for a relaxing holiday in Menorca. But their plans for a bit of peace are quickly disrupted when bestselling author Karen Squires goes missing, only for her body to be found on the beach soon after.

This is book 2 in the series. You don't have to read book 1 to follow the story but I think it helps ground the characters This has the same charm as the first book, with Martin and Albie once again making such a fun detective duo. I also loved the holiday setting, which makes this a perfect beach read.

The mystery is cosy and entertaining and the writers’ retreat provides a neat circle of suspects, Agatha-Christie style. It was fun watching Martin and Albie dig beneath the surface while everyone else seemed ready to accept Karen’s death as an accident and I loved how Martin referenced his supposed past life.

A recommended read for fans of The Thursday Murder Club and cosy mysteries with retired protagonists.

Book 36/100
Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I absolutely loved, loved, loved this second instalment in The Armchair Detective series—dare I say I enjoyed it even more than the first! I was so happy to be reunited with Martin and Albie, who continue to be one of my favourite amateur detective duos.

This book had everything I love: a sunny Majorca setting, a group of writers at the centre of the mystery, an adorable pug, and two hilarious geriatric sleuths determined to solve a murder despite everyone else’s best efforts. Honestly, what’s not to love?

The mystery kept me engaged, but it was the characters and their banter that made this such a joy to read. It’s cozy, funny, and the perfect escape.

If you love The Thursday Murder Club or Vera Wong’s mysteries, I highly recommend giving this series a go.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. I’ve been lucky enough to receive ARCs for both books in the series, and I already can’t wait for Martin and Albie’s next adventure!

The second book in this entertaining series and this time Martin and Albie are on holiday in Spain. When a death occurs amongst a group of authors staying at the same hotel, Martin is certain it is a murder and he is determined to make sure the local police do not shelve it as an accidental death.

As in the first book Martin makes many references to his and Alby's past life as spies and their dialogue on this topic is often hilarious. Now in their 80's they are not as physically capable as they once were but there is nothing amiss with their brains when it comes to an investigation.

It is all good fun, maybe a little bit repetitive in the middle but always an easy read. The murderer is predictable but the manner of the expose is unexpected and clever. Recommended to anyone who enjoys a cosy mystery.

My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of The Armchair Detectives on Holiday by Matt Dunn in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fun, cosy, light-hearted mystery with just the right holiday feel. The amateur sleuthing was entertaining, the characters were charming, and the story had plenty of gentle humour to keep things moving. It’s the kind of book that’s easy to settle into.

Matt Dunn does a lovely job balancing the humour, the setting, and the mystery, making this an enjoyable escape from start to finish.

Martin and Albie’s supposedly relaxing trip to Menorca quickly turns into another investigation when a bestselling author disappears and is later found dead on the beach. I liked the way the mystery tied into the writers’ retreat at the hotel, giving the story a neat circle of suspects without ever feeling very heavy.

THE ARMCHAIR DETECTIVES ON HOLIDAY is the second novel in the Armshair Detectives Mysteries series by MATT DUNN. Ir is a delightful read with some unforgettable characters, especially the two octogenerian “operatives”, as well as a motley crew of authors who are trying to find inspiration at their annual retreat, all staying at the Mahon hotel in Menorca.
When the famous Karen Squires is found dead at the bottom of a cliff, most people are happy to call it an accident, but not the trusty old spies! With the help of Albie’s lady friend, Barbara, they look carefully into each of the authors, eliminating them one by one There are some laugh out loud moments as they follow the clues…….
It is a fun and relaxing read.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bookouture. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

Favorite Quotes:

Custard, my late wife Madeleine’s pug, who we’ve managed to bring on the plane with us under the guise of being Albie’s ‘therapy dog’. Though if you spend any time with Custard, you soon realise he’s the one who needs therapy.

He’s half my age, slightly built, and a little shorter than me, so I imagine I could restrain him if I needed to. Assuming I can still remember my moves. And that he doesn’t have any.

‘You snooze, you lose, Albie.’ Albie looks as if he’d be happy to do both.

My Review:

I have enjoyed both installments of this wryly and deftly written cozy mystery series and am already looking forward to the next. Matt Dunn is a clever scribe, and I revel in his sneaky snark and well-conjured octogenarians. The plotlines were well-crafted, unpredictable, enjoyably entertaining, and laced together with amusing observations and comedic flair.

Martin, Albie, and Dionne (and Custard!) are vacationing in Menorca when an author is found dead after apparently falling off a cliff. Martin is the only one who doesn't believe it an accident and starts investigating the writer's group that the dead woman was with.
I love the relationship between Martin and Albie, they crack me up! The former "operatives" work well together and despite Albie's gruffness he always has Martin's back. I liked how Barbara was still included in the investigation even though she wasn't on the island with them. I was certain I knew who the murderer was but in the end I was wrong. There are plenty of red herrings to keep you guessing.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC.

Once again I had a great time with these characters. Martin and Albie make a wonderful crime fighting duo.

This book follows the majority of the gang on holiday. Well an attempt of a holiday, because no sooner had they arrived they were pulled into solving a crime.

This time they were surrounded by authors on a writing retreat, which quickly proved to be not all that it seemed. I really enjoyed the author element of the book and that a book itself helped solve the mystery.

Such a great book for anyone looking for a cosy mystery that will have you laughing out loud.

Matt Dunn has such a fantastic writing style and affinity for making layered characters. I cannot wait to read more books in this series and books by the author.

The second book in the Armchair Detectives Mystery series is on the island of Menorca. Martin and Albie are on holiday after their previous murder solving exploits. I didn't read the first book in the series, but this one reads well as a standalone. The two amateur sleuths are in their eighties, but their backgrounds in security service equip them to solve mysteries. I like the dynamic between the pair, which makes for some sharp humour and nostalgia that gives the story authenticity. The mystery is believable, and the investigation is immersive and interesting. With its evocative holiday setting and cast of complex, vibrant characters, this is an engaging, lighthearted read.

The Armchair Detectives on Holiday by Matt Dunn. What a great follow-up to book one. Martin and Albie are jetting off for some sun and sangria. But they didn’t bank on finding a body on the beach…

It was entertaining, full of twists and turns and I did guess whodunnit but that did not distract from the story.

I recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends and I can’t wait for book 3 to come out!

I requested and received an advanced readers copy from Bookouture and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.

Loved this book - and immediately bought the first in the series so I can now enjoy the earlier antics of the main characters in this very funny, "cosy" thriller (I wasn't familiar with the Armchair Detectives previously).

Set in Menorca, it involves the investigation into an unexpected murder of a best-selling author principally by a pair who are on holiday - and the pair have an interesting past. The author brings the location to life, and the story is a real page-turner, well paced and well written.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

This took a while to get going for me, and I wasn’t sure I was going to finish it. I’m very glad I persevered though, as the second half was excellent. Once the mystery picked up, I was completely invested and keen to see how it would all unfold. A rewarding read that improved significantly as it went along
