Radical Justice: Building the World We Need

Rate this book
Our society is breaking down. Fascists are winning elections, economic inequality is rampant, and the climate crisis is at its tipping point. It feels like the amount of work needed to overcome these injustices is too much to handle. But what if there is a way to lower the threshold to action? Who will free us if not ourselves?

In Radical Justice, international human rights lawyer Nani Jansen Reventlow shows how we can build a fundamentally different future with our own hands. We all have our own spheres of influence, and each of us can be the revolution.

Taking inspiration from the deep well of anti-racist and social activist writers such as Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò and Angela Davis, each chapter offers tips on how to learn, reflect and act in a society where we are told we are powerless. Including advice on strategic litigation, reclaiming our digital rights, reparations demands, climate activism and much more, the information in these pages is indispensable to the struggle for radical justice.

What’s that saying again 'Good things come in small packages', that sums up this book. It’s compact, precise but also explorative in not only defining the conundrum that we currently find ourselves in, how we got here in the first place & how we will be able to get out (Worldmaking).

Existing in the world right now feels like living in a house full of cracked walls & all we seem to be doing is filling up the cracks while not realizing that the ground that the house was built on is a swamp & the house is sinking with all of us in it (excluding the technocrats who have bunkers…allegedly).

Also, what is this current sentiment that questioning oppressive systems is now being referred to as being radical? Then it’s only fair that each one of us starts acting now because as afore mentioned 👆🏾, the house is sinking.

'Each of us can and must act. And we each need to find our own way of doing so without waiting for a hero to lead the way or until we have a perfect plan'

Again, the house is sinking and this is the handbook to help us find a way out. A handbook that I did not know I needed but I’m glad exists.

There are many layers to this book. One layer takes the reader through a series of different areas of activism. Another shows links with other thinkers in these areas. And another challenges the reader with a series of questions and suggested actions. This allows the book to resonate long after you have finished reading it... for the first time (because then you get drawn back to find more nuances, more layers of possibility). One chapter on its own is like the atmosphere of a whole book. Taken together you get a much bigger, deeper and more nuanced position, a position far from knee-jerk reactions and - as a result - potentially much more effective in instigating real and meaningful change.

Inspiring book with mixed of her own learnt experiences and references to others' observations. She has provided examples and role models of past activism, different issues, as well as laying out challenges and "distractions".

I really like that she had a list of "what you can do next" for learning, reflection and actions. This provides concrete steps to move forward and advance our thinking.

I would highly recommend this for anyone who wants to drive betterment to our society but don't know where to start. This book will give inspirations and guidance on things to reflect on.

MUST READ 2026!
