I was given this book a few weeks ago from a fellow bereaved parent. My son died at the age of 15 from Glioblastoma almost 5 years ago. What has followed is a tornado of emotions and the search for different ways to cope. I have read many books on grief and have found them helpful but there were also some parts of each that I had a hard time resonating with. I found myself unable to put down Christina Stiverson’s “I Carry You”. From the moment I started, I felt that this may be the answer I have been looking for.

I find Christina’s courage to be vulnerable inspiring. There were many phrases from the book that just hit me, such as, “I do not believe everything happens for a reason. That feels dishonest. But I do believe what we do with what happens can give it meaning. I believe in legacy.” Recently I have been trying to do this, to honor my son by not only surviving but by living a fulfilled life. I would then feel guilty and feel sucked into my loss, especially when people still say, “How can you go on, I could never.” Christina gave me a response to this that I believe strongly. There is something much worse than losing David. Christina admits that the grief journey is different for everyone but how we incorporate that grief into meaning and a life well lived is a way to honor our lost children. “I Carry You” gave me permission or validation that I can still find happiness within my grief, not by burying it but by carrying it with me and honoring it.
Lastly, the title brought to mind my son as a toddler, he too would say, “Carry you” when he wanted me to carry him. We both carry each other.

This is a powerful and deeply moving memoir. The author’s storytelling is raw and poetic as she shares her journey through the heartbreaking loss of her child. What truly makes this book so special is the way the author turns grief into an act of courage and transformation. She doesn’t offer easy answers, but instead, she invites readers to sit with the messiness of grief and to recognize the beauty of a fully lived life. This memoir was hard to put down, and I know the wisdom and tenderness in these pages will stay with me for a long time.
