Three weeks after her abduction to the Splinter, Anastasia Cole’s life is all but unrecognizable. This is second in a LitRPG isekai power fantasy series. Read in order.
Well crap. This is a zombie story. I hate zombies. And it doesn't help that the story bogs down hard with a zombie siege that nobody seems to care much about. I mean, they're pfaffing about for days and days making plans, training non-combatants for, uh, stuff, and talking about what they aren't doing.
I bogged down at about 15%. Zombies. Ugh. Also, "love and sex fixes ace" is starting to manifest. It isn't as bad as that sounds. But since I'm already hung up on zombies any break with Ana's characterization from the first book is extra annoying.

Why is everyone acting like a siege isn't going on???
The end of the last book was a "cliffhanger", with a siege of "hundreds of crazies" assaulting the walls of the town. So where the fuck is the siege now?? They are all acting like the siege is going to happen sometime in the future, and they are "preparing" endlessly for it. The siege is happening now, yet zero word of defending the walls. They could just shoot down from the wall and murder all the mindless zombies.
The preparation they are doing is insanely retarded. The main character is teaching everyone how to kill humans, with no weapons. HOW IS THIS HELPFUL? ALL OF THE PEOPLE HAVE SKILLS, WEAPONS, AND MAGIC. You will kill the enemy with the same magic and skills you always use to kill monsters. You aren't going to choke them out, if you can just throw a fireball and blow them all up. The enemies are acting like crazed zombies. Nobody has problems killing crazed zombies. The author keeps pretending that these people all couldn't stomach killing zombies..... that you have to be emotionally defective like the main character to be able to kill zombies. It is so stupid.
Throw in a bunch of weird religion stuff, angst, and lesbian cringe. I am just not getting anything fun out of this.
I'm done with this trash.

Just as good as the first!
This is just a great series. Very well written with a captivating story. The MC and side characters are complex and definitely experience character growth. Loved it. Can’t wait for the next one.

I really loved the first book, and I was excited to read the second book. Unfortunately, for me it didn't quite stand up to its predecessor. What worked for me in the first book was that, while it does have action in it, it also has a kind of slice-of-life vibe to it. I thought the slower pacing and lots of downtime helped with worldbuilding, introducing Ana (and the readers) to the system, as well introducing a fair number of characters. In taking the time to do that, I felt that there were actually stakes involved when the Big Bad/plot threat was introduced towards the end of the first book. There are characters and a community that Ana cares about and wants to protect, it's not just a typical hero inclination to protect people because it's the "right thing to do". But then, one of my big problems with the second book is... that same pacing. In my mind I consider the first book largely as a 'calm before the storm', and it chooses to introduce this big, urgent plot point at the end. Going into this book, you'd expect the pacing to pick up, because now we're getting more into the plot, and the action. There's an urgency because the world's literally falling apart, some of the people we care about are missing, and we have a bunch of enemies right outside our door. Yet, almost inexplicably, I would argue that the pacing of this book is much slower than the first book. There is stuff happening, but a lot of it feels kind of low stakes.
I also struggled with the romance in the book. This also goes hand-in-hand with why I have a problem with the pacing of the book. As I was reading the book, I half jokingly thought to myself that it feels like the author wanted to write a romance book, and they just did so within the trappings of a LitRPG. There is a lot of time dedicated to the relationship between Ana and Mestendi. I read a lot of romance, including sapphic romances, and so maybe I'm pickier with the kind of romances that I do enjoy. Whatever the reason, I just really did not enjoy the romance in this book. I'm not a fan of instalove romances, and I feel like that's essentially what the romance is here. I strongly prefer romances that take the time to build up/deepen the connection between the two leads. But I would say right from the start Mestendi is very infatuated with Ana. As much time as we spend with the two of them, I did not feel like there was very much romantic chemistry between them. It doesn't feel like any romancing ever happens, and I don't particularly feel like their relationship grows much, if at all. Maybe you could argue that it's intentional, it kind of specifically is a part of Ana's initial character. The problem is, whether it's in character or not, it takes up so much time, and I feel like if it takes up that much time then I want it to be interesting or compelling, and for me it just was not. An interconnected issue with this is that I feel like Mestendi's character was really weak/shallow. Honestly I don't think she really has a character outside of her relationship with Ana. Throughout the course of the book she basically becomes Ana's puppy. She's always glued to Ana's side, cries if she gets left behind, she provides emotional support for Ana, and doesn't do much outside of that. I'm not saying she has to be some badass fighter on the frontlines with Ana, I think a soft/strong pairing can work just fine. I just don't think that's the case here.
Overall, my final impression of this book was that it was just okay. There were definitely parts of it that I enjoyed, I think some of the charm from the first book is still there. I think the overall plot has potential to it. But I was really underwhelmed by Messy, their romance, and the pacing of the book. There were other parts of the book that I similarly felt a little meh about (e.g. ). When I finished the first book I really enjoyed it and recommended it somebody right after, but finishing this one I feel... it was fine. I'm glad to have finished it, but I'm also glad to move on to a new book/series. I'm a little curious about where this series is heading after this, but at the same time I feel like I could leave the series now and be fine. Oh well.

Sadly, it's not as good as the first book. It was hampered by the author's commitment to detail everything that the MC does from moment to moment, fantasy slow life story style, much like they did in book 1. However, there was a siege going on! It felt like there was enormous pressure on the outpost to go out and fight the enemy to save everyone but... that just didn't reflect in the story. The first half of the book just kept getting bogged down in the minutiae of the day. MC has to train the militia, then have lunch, then learn magic, then have a meeting with the other leaders, then go to the baths and wash up, then have a romantic moment with the love interest. Then REPEAT this the next day, over and over again, told in minute detail every time. While there's a siege on! Or rather, that's what we're given to believe but the siege is barely described. So maybe there was no siege and the possessed enemies were just... roaming the countryside? Even though it was clear they were running out of time?
I get it, the author wanted to write a slice of life story in which the MC slowly gets to know herself better and finds a place she belongs, despite her disposition to see people as disposable assets and inability to care. But it just doesn't work when there's supposed to be an ever-present enemy lurking about, people who are (apparently!) in mortal danger that need to be saved, and an actual world threatening to fall apart. So needless to say, the first half of the book was not great and I was going to give it 2 stars because of it.
Luckily, once the outpost starts to mobilize and they start bringing the fight to the enemy, the story picks up and becomes quite a good read. Hence, in the end, I settled on a 3 star rating. I feel like the book could have been great if the author had cut about 100 to 150 pages from the training/romance arc in the first half.
Speaking of the romance, it's bad, y'all. The MC and the love interest have MULTIPLE conversations about how one of them thinks they're not good enough for the other and the other should just forget about them, but oh no I love you so much, no I love you so much, no I love YOU so much, etc... until the next existential crisis and they have the same conversation but with the roles reversed, over and over again. It's tedious and it sucks. Not to mention that the love interest has literally no other role than to "be there" for the MC, that's it.
Okay, so let's split the difference and call it 2.5 stars. Could have been better but I still had an okay time reading it.

Shallow, poor priorities and choices made for the convenience of story direction that don't always match the characters as written. The surrounding farms are under siege and not a single leader in the outpost thinks "hey we should probably help" until our mc randomly becomes the goddesses chosen. Also, can we talk about the clearly infected adventurer whose mind is clearly compromised? No worries, just leave her in a room at the towns most important healers house. Crazy girl escapes and starts humping the obelisk, you know the one everyone is relying on for supplies and any possible escape? No worries, we'll watch. Lazy writing. It's like the author is more worried about writing a pretty cringe budding lesbian romance than the actual story. Speaking of the romance-we basically get puppy love the entire time from one side and an awkwardly written attempt to show the mc overcoming her traumatic past by going along with it despite her "love" interest being about the most vanilla and shallow character in the book. idk, it's not the worst thing I've read but it's pretty disappointing. Also pacing. iykyk.

A very good read
The MC finds that a duplicitous god had formed a cult to destroy the world splinter that they inhabit. His motives are unknown but he is an advesary of the MC's patron goddess. In Leveling up, she becomes the Wayfarer's champion, mobilizing a militia and taking the fight to the cultists.
The storyline is compelling and well written with interesting characters and a strong threat to challenge them.

A goddamn fucking masterpiece! I absolutely devoured this book so quickly. I surprised myself. I read both the first and second books back-to-back, and because I did, the change that Ana went through was crystal clear. She's like a completely different person and the transition was smooth. And the relationship that she has with Messy was absolutely making me swoon the entire time. They're so sweet, I swear I'm gonna get a fucking cavity🥰😭 i'm so ready for the next one!

The locked in setting and static situation resulted in a very boring book. All of the flair the main character had in book one has been lost through emotional baggage. How a relationship has dragged down the MC is beyond me. The entire godly dispute is just ridiculous. This was a good character that was lessened and wasted on a very mediocre story.

I’m more of a sci-fi reader than fantasy, but I have been really enjoying this book series. The writer has a very smooth style and is good at character development. I’m really looking forward to where the series goes next.

This is My Favorite Seried
This series gets to go into my Must Reads. The character development and the portrayal of the main character will appeal to most of us on both the ace and autistic spectrums. I haven't felt so drawn in by a series in a very long time.

Why did the author this that a LitRPG is the right time to explore juvenile male?/lesbian power fantasy and abandon all pretense of writing a fun adventure story. This one veered so hard and badly, I found it offensive enough for 1 star.

Read in one day! Might be the fastest ive ever read a book over 500 pages lol. A solid sequel to the first entry in the series, and going in a direction I wasn’t expecting! It’s nothing exceptional, but I’m looking forward to the next book in the series :)

I found the first half the book needlessly repetitious and slow to get the plot moving. While the last half did eventually get going this felt like a filler book. Hopefully with it out of the way the next will be stronger.
