They say love heals all wounds. But what if love is the wound?
When Oliver returns to Providence Falls to settle his late father’s estate, he plans to sign the papers and disappear. But the town has other plans. There, he meets Lili, a woman bound to the town like a prisoner, suffocating in a life that feels like a cage, yet offering him something he thought he had lost a sense of home.
Drawn together by shared scars, Oliver and Lili ignite a fragile, forbidden love. For a moment, it feels like salvation. But Providence Falls is not a place that forgives. And every promise of a fairytale comes with a price written in blood.
The Beating Hearts is a dark blend of psychological horror and gothic romance—an unsettling story of trauma, forbidden desire, and the cost of reaching for light in a place made of shadows.
Enter the haunting world of Silentsomnia—a growing universe of unsettling tales, hidden connections, and mysteries that refuse to stay buried.
Tully Oldin is a writer and storyteller who brings cinema to the page. His works blur the line between reading and watching, immersing readers in slow-burn horror, psychological drama, and surreal storytelling. Silentsomnia is where it all comes alive — a growing collection of interconnected stories and haunting mysteries.
When I saw the cover of this book, I was immediately drawn to it. Unfortunately, I am one of those who first notices the cover page, and then the story. The silhouette of two people, the red color around them… it gives me something mystical that immediately attracted me.
I really liked the book, although it deals with elements that are unfortunately increasingly present today and we read about them more and more. Domestic violence, the breaking of the human spirit, and sick minds that do this to their partners are increasingly present in everyday life. In addition to all this, the way the author depicted the state of a person who lives in such a world where she sees no way out is truly terrifying.
This story is about Oliver who returns to his hometown after the death of his father to resolve a property issue. He meets Lilli, who has lived there her whole life, is married to an abuser and lives one day at a time. When their love ignites, Lilli finally realizes how beautiful her life can be and decides to run away with Oliver from a city that carries something mystical in it, a city where the inhabitants have enlarged pupils, a city where when you arrive people stop in the middle of the road and look at you as if you were some kind of prey, a city that does not want newcomers. But will Providence Falls let them out of its jaws or is their love the last thing they will have?
The writing style is very good. It is written simply and understandably. The story itself draws readers in very easily and the book is read very quickly. Did I get the ending I was hoping for? Unfortunately, no. But that is precisely why I consider it excellent because it did not give what everyone would expect and hope to see for the ending. Definitely looking forward to the next one
Big thanks to the author and BookSirens for giving me this copy and I leave my review voluntarily.
I really enjoyed this story. It's an incredibly short read which sometimes worries me a little bit. Not everyone can pull off a good, quick read. But this one was incredibly well-rounded and written.
I thought the characters were well-developed and intriguing. Their relationship obviously moved quickly due to the length of the book, but I didn't take that as a problem. I loved the tone in this book. Although Oldin is a newer author, his writing didn't feel juvenile to me. Sometimes I find it quite obvious when a book is at the beginning of an author's career, but this one didn't give me that impression. I also thought it was thoroughly edited. I appreciated the suspense and mystery that he was able to develop in such a short period. As I was reading, I kept feeling that something bad was about to happen, but I couldn't anticipate when it happened.
When the book reached that turning point though, it really hit strong. This book had one particular scene that had me cringing as I read along. Definitely be prepared for some gore! The ending left me curious. I almost expected there to be a little bit more to the story but I didn't mind the open and ominous ending!
Thank you to the author for offering me an ARC of this book. As always, all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
Initially the romance element is a little heavy-handed for my personal tastes & it threatened to put me off but it some feels like a stylistic choice so that when the horror undercuts it it has more of a sickening impact.
The quality of the writing & the turn of phrase is superb. '[The room] was a tired little box dressed up in its Sunday best' & 'The morning bled out slowly' are lines I wish I'd written!
The town itself is a main character here & gives a suitably nasty sense of itself, pervading the happiness of the romance.
A short story piece which never feels rushed, this is gorgeously evocative & impactful & a great introduction to silentsomnia, a world I think I'm going to enjoy exploring.
A bit too gory for me at one part, but I liked the story. The mystery behind the town was intriguing and I felt so sorry for Lili, and I really wanted a happy ending for her and Oliver.
The writing was easy to follow and the story interesting, but parts of it wasn't for me. However, if you like horrors that will mess with your head a bit, you should give this a go. It was a quick and easy read, great for catching up on your goodreads goal, and the ending was perfect for this kind of story.
Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this book! I enjoyed this. I felt it was well written and Oldin succeeded at creating the right kind of atmosphere to go with this book. I will say, however, that some of the other reviews are misleading. Don't go into this thinking you're getting a dark romance. This is more of a psychological thriller about a terrified woman in a physically abusive relationship falling for the nice, polite man from out of town, and the consequences of that blossoming relationship. I believe in the following book it will take more of a horror turn, which I very much look forward to! In fact, the last few pages were icky and gross and fun and I can't wait to see where this story goes. Mostly I can't wait to see the bad guys get their asses beat by whatever (whoever?) was happening at the end. Overall, I would read more of this series, but I don't know if I'd recommend it to my friends because none of them are really into this specific sub-genre of horror. I'd ask them to give it a try but I think it'd depend on the direction of the next book. Regardless, I'm into whatever this will become and hope I get to read the next one soon!!
A man comes to town to sort out his deceased father's estate. He is immediately confronted with difficult memories of his childhood, and the weird residents of this town.
A woman feels like a big bird trapped in a little cage. This town, her relationship, is a prison. She's expected to get on with it, follow the way of life, and that she can... until she meets this newcomer.
An unusual town. A secret relationship, and brutal consequences. This is a really good thriller / horror that pulls you in. It makes you uncomfortable, it leaves you hoping for a good outcome, and it makes you spine tingling nervous!
I recommend this novella to those who enjoy thrillers / horror / anything on the dark side etc. While a romance centres the story, you still get the familiar tropes of a small town, mysterious and odd people, and daunting violence!
A short story that holds secrets as deep as the family lines within it. Oliver has to go back to his old hometown, one which is mother and him escaped from after his abusive father dies. A trip that was supposed to be open and closed turns to something longer and more sinister when he meets Lili.
This story has amazing descriptions to the point where you feel like you are living within the book and the ending... I truly hope there is more to this story because I want to know what happens next.
The author has a strength in developing the tone of the story. From the first page, ann eerie since of wickedness can be felt within the town.
The MC feelings translate well to the reader. The pacing of the relationship development between the MC and FMC pulls you in and creates the hope of change.
I do feel like the story takes a hard left turn, the climax builds too quickly and you wonder how or why something so violent would happen.
Maybe focus developing why/where this towns “rules” come from. Just seems sudden and disjointed based on the initial “why” of the violence.
I do love the ending and the unknown surrounding the MC, that was a well done cliffhanger.
A bone chilling, trauma filled short horror story.
Oliver returns to Providence Falls after the passing of his father, where he meets Lili, an unhappily married woman. A forbidden love ensues but will they get their happy ending.
This story caught me by surprise and I did not expect it to end the way it did. I really enjoyed the creepiness of the town and the chilling feeling that something wasn’t quite right. Full of trauma and emotion, I almost thought there would be a happy ending but what we got was even better.
I advise you to check the trigger warnings before you dive in as this won’t be for everyone. I won’t list them here as it’s a bit of a spoiler.
It is creepy, gory and violent, finished with a side of WTF! This was 4.5 stars for me (rounded up to 5 for Amazon & Goodreads.) I look forward to reading more from the author.
“The years had blurred behind him, a long stretch of muted colors and unspoken questions. He didn’t know what he wanted. He only knew that nothing he’d found so far had felt like home.”
“He’d always thought he’d know home when he saw it—and that was the reason he gave himself to justify leaving, again and again. Every city, every town, he waited for the feeling to arrive. It never did.”
I’ve rated this book based on the CAWPILE method. This book averaged 5 stars.
CHARACTERS- 10/10
The characters were easily distinguishable from each other and felt like real people. The trauma felt real and cutting and relatable.
ATMOSPHERE/SETTING- 10/10
Very unsettling. Creepy town in Oliver’s creepy past with creepy pupils on people? Creepy.
WRITING STYLE- 10/10
Great. The descriptions and the mixture of showing and telling were great. It wasn’t rushed, and the pacing felt perfect. Definitely set the stage for whatever comes next. The perspective shifts were seamless as well.
PLOT- 9/10
Great plot. Perfect for a short story. I even got drawn into the romance despite knowing the ending wouldn't have a nice shiny bow on it.
INTRIGUE- 10/10
I woke up in the middle of the night and decided to start this story. Next thing I know, I’ve finished it. It felt like the blink of an eye and I couldn’t put it down. Coffee is my best friend today.
LOGIC/RELATIONSHIPS- 9/10
The way they clicked and bonded didn’t feel forced or unbelievable. It felt natural and completely plausible.
ENJOYMENT- 9/10
All around, I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. This was a big leap up from the last book I read from this author, and that one was good in the first place. I would definitely recommend this. I definitely classify this as a southern gothic suspense style story. This makes me very excited to see what this author puts out next.

3.75 stars The Flayed: Beating Hearts is a haunting novella that blends trauma, connection, and creeping supernatural dread. While the story touches on abuse and its long-term impacts, where it truly shines is in the beautifully written bond between its characters. Their quiet conversations, natural intimacy, and sense of comfort with each other are some of the most captivating parts of the book—tender, believable moments that many readers may find deeply relatable.
There are, however, a few elements that left me wishing for more clarity. As with many novellas, the worldbuilding feels only partially realized. The broader mysteries affecting the town—particularly the strange “spell,” the unsettling behavior changes, and the dilated-eyes phenomenon—aren’t fully explored. Since this story is part of the Silentsomnia universe, which promises interconnected tales, dreams, games, and eerie fates, I hoped to see more of those series-wide elements woven into this installment. If future books delve deeper into the supernatural threads hinted at here, I’d be eager to continue.
On the emotional side, the depiction of surviving abuse, the longing for belonging, and the struggle to feel “at home” after trauma are handled with care. Certain imagery, like the motif of mirrors, hits especially hard and will resonate with readers who have their own complicated histories.
My only hesitation comes from a moment of character behavior that felt inconsistent with real-world trauma responses, as well as a few questions about how the town’s influence works. Still, these issues didn’t overshadow the poignancy of the relationships at the heart of the story.
Overall, this is a compelling, atmospheric introduction to a dark world with clear potential. I’m hoping future installments lean more heavily into the dreams, games, and supernatural forces that flicker at the edges here.
Thank you to BookSirens for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a sharp and unsettling little punch of a novella set in the Silentsomnia universe. It grabbed me faster than I expected. At its center is a young man who finally slipped free of an abusive father, only to be pulled back home to settle the estate after his father’s death. That setup alone has weight, but what makes it work is the way the story leans into the small town unease. Everyone is watching him. Everyone seems to know something he does not. The moment he crosses the town line it feels like something shifts.
The character work is surprisingly strong for such a compact story. Oliver carries a lot of emotional weight and the book lets you feel it. His return home is filled with old ghosts, but there is also a spark of something new. He finds himself drawn to the one person who seems to understand him, someone he is not supposed to get close to. Their connection feels fragile and forbidden, but it gives him a sense of hope he did not expect to find in a place filled with so many shadows. It adds an unexpected emotional thread that deepens every scene around it. When things finally start to unravel, the story does not hold back. It hits hard and wastes no time easing you in.
The worldbuilding is intentionally light, but it works well. You get just enough of the atmosphere. The strangeness. The hush. The sense that something is always just out of sight. It gives the reader what they need without distracting from the character driven dread. It is simple but effective and it leaves room for your imagination to explore the darker corners.
The pacing is steady from start to finish. There is no drag and no filler. Just a clean build of tension that pays off. And the ending leaves you with questions in the best way. It has you reaching for the next installment the moment you finish.
This novella is quick, eerie and engaging. It delivers exactly what it sets out to do. I will absolutely continue the series.
This novella made for a quick read—partly due to its length, partly due to the nature of the story and the eagerness I felt to get to the end and discover what mysteries are held within the town of Providence Falls. I found myself somewhat disappointed on that latter score, no doubt the promise of answers is held within the rest of Oldin’s “Silensomnia” universe. This is an angle that is intriguing, but it does feel like loose ends are left for the reader who may be unaware that this particular story is merely a single thread within a tapestry.
I did enjoy “The Flayed” overall, though I was not entirely pleased by the conclusion and the actions (or inactions) of certain characters. Additionally, the female lead felt at times like more of a prop to further the plot than a character in her own right. The writing itself was engaging, and aside from a couple of quirks kept me immersed in the world of the author’s creation (despite the trope at the heart of the story not being a favourite of mine).
I would be curious to read more of Oldin’s work, and uncover how this tale fits into his greater narrative.
This is an unpaid and honest review, willingly provided in kind for access to an ebook review copy of this title.
First, thank you to Tully Oldin and BookSiren for an opportunity to read this novella.
Oliver returns to the town he left as a young child to settle the estate of his father. Oliver and his mother fled the town, and his father's abuse, years ago hoping to never return. His plan was to settle quickly, leave, and never look back. However, a forbidden romance blossoms and leaving a town that harbors only bad memories becomes more difficult than Oliver ever anticipated.
This was a dark, grim, gothic tale dripping with psychological horror. The backstories of the MMC and FMC were heartbreaking and their shared trauma, and developing love, made the reader have hope for their eventual escape. However, this is not a fairytale and is not a story for those seeking a happy ending. The creepy citizens of the town added to the eerie tale and the description of their physical state made my skin crawl. It was an immersive read and definitely brought the fear factor.
This is a novella within the Silentsomnia universe created by Tully Oldin. A recommended read (with the lights on)! 💡

When I first started reading The Flayed by Tully Oldin, I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. Books that are slow and descriptive in the beginning are a hard pass for me. However, I kept reading and it started to grow on me. I like the main character interactions, and the way you got an uneasy feeling about the location, and the surrounding characters. The ending wasn’t what I was expecting either and it did leave me wanting to know more. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review Voluntarily. Halfway through the book I wish there had been more development leading up to the ending. The relationship between the main characters was quick and feel there was a lot unsaid. I would have liked more background to other existing characters as well since there were gaps of white space between pages. This I feel more plot could have been added here, and less of a descriptive setting at the beginning resulting in more of a flow. With this in mind I would suggest giving this book a read as it is well written. I don’t think one would be disappointed. Happy Reading.
Don't get me wrong, it’s a strong 4, but we have issues.
Tully Oldin is a straight-up descriptive master. The way this author weaves intricate scenes and emotions is beautiful. It’s set in a larger universe called "Silentsomnia" (which is a cool name, I’ll give it that), and the atmosphere is top-tier. You feel every word. However... I need closure. I am a person who needs loose ends tied up in a neat little bow, or at least a knot. This story? No knot. No bow. Just string everywhere.
What is the deal with the weird eyes? Where did the man with no face go? How did he go?
I really enjoy Oldin’s writing style—it's lush and immersive—but the lack of resolution hurts my soul a little bit. I’m hoping the answers are hiding somewhere else in the Silentsomnia universe because I have questions, and I need answers.
Warning: There is an extremely graphic gore scene in this novel.
Thanks to the author for the arc and Booksirens. All opinions are my own.

Lili is married to an abusive, toxic, mean man. The whole town is creepy. All the town’s people are weird. Oliver is amazing—he’s all the good things Lili could ever hope for. This is an interesting read. That last chapter and cliffhanger are … whoosh! Wild, gut dropping, heart wrenching, triggering. And I can’t wait to read book 2.

“The years had blurred behind him, a long stretch of muted colors and unspoken questions. He didn’t know what he wanted. He only knew that nothing he’d found so far had felt like home.”
This story was ominous and eerie, I liked that a lot. A small town with creepy vibes, trauma, weird people with strange pupils and the feeling there's something going on that everyone knows about, except the MMC. Combine that with the slow pacing of this story and it felt very eerie. I wish there would have been a little more clarity about certain things that are in the book though.
The ending was unexpected, I wonder what/who will happen next.
In this book you'll find: 🖤Psychological dark romance 🖤Creepy small town 🖤Forbidden love 🖤Violence/gore 🖤Eerie vibes
An abused wife and the child of an abusive parent find each other in weird circumstances. The man actually managed to escape the situation when his mother ran away with him in the middle of the night. The only reason he came back is due to the death of his father and having to deal with the house. The woman works at the diner and feels she doesn’t have any choice but to endure. Sadly, I understood both points of view. The ending, definitely not what I expected. It took me by surprise and I have the feeling that was what the author was going for. I love horror, but not gore, and that lowered the rating for me.

This was awesome! What a thrill, this was a pleasant and suspenseful read. Towards the end there was a twist, and ngl, it was slightly predictable, but what happened next was definitely not. Insane twist.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I'm leaving this review voluntarily. There were some small things that made me wonder how this could be possible in practice with the way they were described, but that's all 'negative' I have. I want more of this; the end left me with so many questions, so there has to be a sequel right?
Welcome to Providence Falls, where an abuser is never punished and pies are gross.
This novella packs an emotional trip. It starts out sad, then it becomes happy, then it is hair-raising, growing into love, leading to an ending that has you craving for more.
Tully Oldin did a terrific job portraying every emotion. His writing style is impactful, which kept me engaged in the story.
I highly recommend this for readers who enjoy a love story that leads to a sadistic ending.
What a WILD RIDE!! I swear to you this book would be the most jaw dropping horror movie or series! Oliver feels that something is off in the weird town of Providence Falls, then he meets Lili who makes him feel like he’s finally home. Unfortunately Lili has been through a lot with her husband Ryan, and the way this story unfolds for the town of Providence Falls is absolutely heart wrenching and terrifying.
I really enjoyed this, it was the first book I've read by this author and I didn't know what to expect. This looks like it is going to be apart of a series, and I would certainly read more. The ending left off on a cliffhanger, but it ended well. The story itself was well written and has had me in my feelings. It was on the shorter side, so it made it a quick easy read.
There’s a raw, almost haunting quality to the writing that makes the characters feel alive in all their pain and intensity.
My only complaint? I wish it had been longer. The story was so sharp and immersive that I wanted even more time with the characters and the world. A few moments felt like they could’ve hit even harder with just a little more space to breathe.
Still, as an ARC read, it absolutely delivered—dark, intense, and wholly addictive. I’ll be keeping an eye out for whatever comes next in this world.
I don’t even know where to start with this review. I sat there at the end with whiplash on what think? I’m shocked. I’m still reeling. I want more of the story, want more of the chaos and more of did that actually happen. I will be coming back for more.
If you enjoy suspense, this is a good book for you. From the first page the mood seems tense as you know something is going to happen. The story starts out slow to build the world, and introduce the love story. Even though it starts slowly it goes out with a bang. This is a good read.
This book was simply incredible! The author’s bio about bringing cinema to life on the page was spot on. It’s a truly captivating real-to-life story brimming with dark and emotional elements. A touch of the paranormal is woven throughout, creating a genuinely believable horror narrative. It was an exceptionally enjoyable read.
The Flayed: Beating Hearts by Tully Oldin Solid 4.25 rounded down to 4 🔮🔮🔮🔮orbs Pub. Date: Sept. 29, 2025 Silentsomnia
A diner in Providence Falls….
💡Orbs Prologue:I am a flake, or rather I have flakey parts. My crust is divine, and my glorious apple filling is to die for. Lili made me for a special occasion; I am to impress a newcomer to the establishment. Well, in reality, Oliver isn’t truly new to this town; he used to live in Providence Falls, but his abused mother decided enough was enough and took Oliver away from this dreaded place. For a slice of pie, I am very perceptive, not unlike every other person living here. There is a love brewing between these two, Oliver and Lili, but there is a problem: Lili is already married. As Oliver takes a bite of me, he ponders the future, one that he hopes is with Lili, but this will be far from simple. Lili’s husband, Ryan, is pure evil, an abusive tyrant who can’t find out about the nature of Lili’s attraction to Oliver. Can they escape the clutches of this forsaken town?
🔩Nuts & BoltsOliver needs to tie up some loose ends. His father has since passed on, and Oliver decides to sell his childhood home located in Providence Falls. None of this is pleasant, though, and soon Oliver is seeing memories of his abusive father. Oliver must stick to the plans to arrive, sell the house, and promptly leave. However, fate has different plans. Oliver has a chance meeting with a waitress at a diner, who catches his eye. Now, normally, we would be happy for Oliver, but the town of Providence Hills is different. The black, soulless eyes, cracked lips, and apprehension toward outsiders all feverishly await Oliver. The townspeople gossip, and things rarely go unnoticed, especially a new budding “friendship” between Oliver and Lili, who is already married. There is a sickness in this town, only perceptible by those who visit. The question remains, what would a person do in the name of love?
👍Orbs Pros: This is why I love writing reviews. It’s that novel that hovers under the radar. Our author, Tully Oldin, has written a love story that kept me glued to the pages. Notice, dear friends, I said “love story,” and I, for one, am not an avid fan of that type of trope. Ok, Orb, then why are you raving about this title? This novella was so well executed, to say I was impressed is an understatement. The story packs quite a punch in its minuscule 83 pages. The adrenaline rush I received was so intense that I immediately flipped open a sci-fi novel to placate an oncoming anxiety attack. The conclusion of this is jaw-dropping.
👎Orbs Cons:We have seen this story before. Creatively, I am quite sure you will have many previous reads that compare nicely. Now, having said that, I found the amount of raw emotion this novella arouses is extraordinary when you consider the actual period of time you invest in Oldin’s world.
Recommended!Forbidden love, creepy men, odd townfolk with cracked, bleeding lips, and a nasty sheriff… What is not to love here? I must say a special word of caution for those severely triggered by the subject of domestic abuse. This was a doozy and might be better left alone.
💡Orbs Epilogue:Down to the last bite, Oliver sat with a smile on his face. I had done my job, filling his belly with a warmness only food made with love can bring. My tiny morsels were left on the plate, searching out Oliver’s lips and tongue. As Lili reached over to ask Oliver if he needed something to drink, their arms brushed against each other, causing them to both suppress a deep breath. As she picked up the plate, I knew this situation was bad. Providence Hills was no place for this. Here you abide by the man’s rules, or well, let’s not think about the aftermath. I prayed Oliver picked up his jacket and headed to wherever it is that he came from. Unfortunately, the quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach….
This story was a pleasant surprise for me coming out of October. We follow Oliver as he returns to Providence Falls to sell his fathers house after he passes. A town that he wants to get in and GTFO. But in the time trying to get everything in order, he meets Lili at the local diner.
While reading this, I got Blake Crouch vibes from almost the beginning. As you are progressing through you get the feeling that something isn't quite right with this town, and the only normal person here besides Oliver is Lili. Throughout the entire story you just have this unsettling feeling, knowing that something crazy is going to happen. And let me tell you, this book is already hard enough to put down, but that last 30% is just non stop WTF moments back to back. We go from "This is kind of sweet" to "Holy crap, WTF is happening right now".
Highly recommend if you like horror with some twists, and it's a quick read, though I do recommend taking your time and really enjoying the journey.
