Bare Buttes is like any other California desert hot, dusty, and known best for its tourism. But unlike flashy Palm Springs or hipster Joshua Tree, Bare Buttes isn't known for pool parties or hiking—its draw is its extraterrestrial visitors.
No one living outside the town needs to know that Bare Buttes' "alien abductions" are fake, organized a few times each year by its small but spunky Performance Committee. The committee sustains just enough hype to avoid suspicion while keeping tourists interested, which is perfect for Juniper Flatts, the owner of a humble UFO-themed gift shop that she inherited from her mother. But when a series of real abductions occurs—each involving a mysterious flying vehicle not terribly unlike the Performance Committee's simulations—and Juniper's best friend and love interest goes missing, she takes it upon herself to find out who's responsible for the chaos.
Juniper's head-spinning investigation threatens to unravel the town’s carefully constructed image, and with it, the last thing Juniper’s late mother left her. By working with her neighbors to connect the dots, Juniper discovers the orchestrator behind her community's biggest nightmare. Going head-to-head with him leads Juniper to a nauseating sell out her community, or do the right thing, even at great personal cost.
Loved this book! If you’re looking for a fun, quick story that’ll keep you engaged and entertained, this is the book for you. I really enjoyed Adrianna Nine’s writing style and also thought the narrator, Lindsey Dorcus, did a great job. Looking forward to reading/listening to more books penned by Adrianna Nine!
Maybe this one just wasn’t for me , and I think that’s because I’m not really into sci-fi or fantasy-leaning stories. Going into this, I thought I was getting a thriller… only to realize very quickly that I was not 😭. At first I was genuinely confused because visuals really are fundamental … I didn’t even clock that the cover hinted at an alien-abduction vibe, so when the story started unfolding, I was like HUHHHHHHHHH???
Once I accepted that this wasn’t the genre I expected, it honestly wasn’t bad. It just wasn’t what I signed up for. There were moments where I was confused, moments where my brain hurt a little, and moments where I was like “okay… I see what you’re doing,” even if it wasn’t my personal taste.
That said, I still got through it .. and that counts for something. It ended up being a quick, easy mini read, perfect for catching up on my reading goal toward the end of the year. Did it blow my mind? No. Did it confuse me at times? Absolutely. Did it still help me stay on track with my goal? Yes 😂📚
Overall, not terrible — just not my vibe. On to the next one.
This audiobook had everything I wanted and more; rage, hope, love, mystery all against a beautiful desert backdrop. I'll read anything Adrianna writes :))
💚Small Town Secrets 💚Skepticism 💚Alien Tourism 💚Strange Town Those Lights at Night has a cool concept and a fun small-town vibe, mixing UFO lore with mystery. The idea kept me interested and there were some engaging moments, but the pacing felt a bit off especially as an audiobook. Overall, it's enjoyable to listen to with potential, just not one that completely came together for me.
