He's also the jerk behind the Stoker award-winning Paperbacks from Hell, a history of the 70's and 80's horror paperback boom, which contains more information about Nazi leprechauns, killer babies, and evil cats than you probably need.
And he's the screenwriter behind Mohawk, which is probably the only horror movie about the War of 1812 and Satanic Panic.
it was a pretty solid story. the voice acting and all the theatrics added so much. I do feel like it took a long ass time to even get to anything remotely spooky or haunted. so at times I do feel like it dragged a tad bit. it also absolutely needed to be split up better. the length of the chapters was far too long. there were very obvious points where it could have and should have been split into another chapter. so if you're someone who stops reading at chapters, make sure you got time.
the twists and turns were exciting and captivating though. constantly had me wondering what would happen next. overall enjoyed the story.
TL;DR I DEVOURED this graphic audio and I definitely think I loved this story more listening to it than if I had read it. The character actors and sound effects really add to the horror aspect of this story. There were a few times I thought, hmm is this an audiobook of Saw?! Anywho - if you like horror/suspense, dark humor makes you laugh out loud, and aren’t too squeamish then this is DEFINITELY a read for you.
LIKES - BRAVO to the voice actors in this book. They were absolutely great and really sucked me into the story. - The overall plot itself regarding what’s actually haunting the house was creepy but fun. Contrasts I know but it made the story a bit more believable which added to the creepy vibe. Loved it. - I’m new to Grady Hendrix’s writing but I really like that he doesn’t hold back with violent scenes. There’s no tiptoeing around it, he writes it in such a detailed way that yes I made 😳 that face a lot but again it just adds to the realism of the story….. especially on audiobook - The characters and their relationships felt authentic and believable. I really liked how Louise and Marks relationship changes throughout the book without feeling forced or cheesy
MID - Marks story about why he dropped out of college got long. Not gonna lie, I could have done without that filler
DISLIKE - honestly nothing about this book that I absolutely didn’t like!
I love this book. I was not expecting the antagonist to be… what it ends up being, but it added an unusual charm and definitely had me nervous laughing.
To be fair, this book may have been a lot creepier if I would have just read it. As much as I love full cast audios, I think it made this particular book come across as just a bit corny at times.
