The Orange Blossom

Rate this book
The Orange Blossom is a sweeping, intergenerational saga of resilience, identity, and the unbreakable bonds of family.

From the bustling markets of Monrovia to the snow-laden streets of Michigan and the glittering runways of Paris and New York, one family’s story unfolds across decades of love, betrayal, and survival. At its heart is Joviah Collins—a woman shaped by secrets she never asked for and strength she didn’t know she carried.

Her grandmother, the famed Orange Vendor Woman of Liberia, built her life on grit and faith. Her mother, Beatrice, guarded appearances in exile while carrying unspoken wounds. And Joviah, a fashion designer on the world stage, finds herself haunted by the past she can no longer outrun.

When long-buried truths come to light, the Collins children must decide whether family history will define them—or if they will reclaim it on their own terms.

Lushly told and deeply human, The Orange Blossom is both a love letter and a reckoning—a powerful exploration of heritage, sacrifice, and the beauty of standing in one’s truth.

This book was just not for me.

Joviah was a toddler when the family came to America. They spent 2 years in New Jersey before moving to Michigan. Yet, this part of the story is told from Joviah's perspective, which was very confusing. There is discussion of honor and respect and the differences between Liberia and America, and the narrator is a toddler?

The women (Beatrice and Kebbeh) are both awful people, and Boikai is even worse, selfish and arrogant.

The concept of "honor" in Liberia seems to be an excuse to cheat, lie, and pretend to be everything you are not.

I absolutely LOVED this book! The characters were well developed, the story line held my attention, and it kept me wanting to read more to find out how it was going to all unfold. This book is definitely worth your time!
